Joey Votto hit a grand slam and celebrated with a flap Andrew Luck Jersey , honoring the bird that prolonged his at-bat.

Votto ended a long homer drought with his third career grand slam Tuesday night, powering the Cincinnati Reds to a 9-5 victory that ended the Detroit Tigers‘ longest winning streak in two years.

Votto came to bat with the bases loaded in the third inning of a scoreless game. A black bird wandered between the plate and the pitcher’s mound, prompting Votto to call time so he could try to shoo it away. The bird stayed in the middle of the infield.

”He was in the line of vision and I was going to try to swat it away,” Votto said. ”I was thinking, `Make sure to hit the ball in the air’ and `Don’t hit it on the ground up the middle.’ I was taking care of the bird.”

Votto’s high fly ball to right field off Matthew Boyd (4-5) had just enough to avoid the outstretched glove of Nicholas Castellanos, who reached over the wall and barely missed it. Votto flapped his arms in tribute to the bird when he crossed the plate on his first homer since May 13, ending a 30-game drought.

Votto’s last homer at Great American Ball Park was May 6. He has seven homers after hitting 36 last season, one shy of his career high.

”I would like to think it’s all part of the season Duke Johnson Jersey ,” Votto said. ”I felt good. I have felt good. I’ve been swinging the bat well.”

Sal Romano (4-7) had a second straight solid outing, limiting the Tigers to four singles over seven shutout innings. Billy Hamilton also homered as the Reds pulled away to a 9-0 lead.

The Tigers had won five straight and moved within a game of .500. They haven’t been to the break-even mark since they were a season-best 4-4 on April 8. They’ve wasted five chances to get back.

Romano was coming off perhaps his best performance in the majors. He went a career-high eight innings and gave up one run during a 5-1 win at Kansas City on Tuesday.

Trailing 9-0, Detroit finally broke through in the ninth when Wandy Peralta walked home a run and Leonys Martin followed with a double.

Boyd walked three batters in four innings – all of them scored – and gave up a season-high five runs. He was most upset with the two walks that set up the first grand slam he’s allowed in his career.

”Walks will kill you,” Boyd said. ”Things like that (grand slam) are going to happen in this ballpark, especially when the wind is blowing out.”

The Reds are 12-11 against the Tigers all-time. This season, the Tigers are 1-6 in interleague play. The Reds are 5-1.

The bird that wandered onto the field during Votto’s at-bat didn’t go away. It made a mound visit and later explored other parts of the field. Fans cheered when it was shown on the video board.

The outfield grass showed the effects of a concert at Great American Ball Park on Saturday, when high heat and the field covering left yellow patterns in the stressed grass.

Martin reached in all five plate appearances, going 3 for 3 with two walks. … Cincinnati’s Tucker Barnhart also reached in all five plate appearances Demaryius Thomas Jersey , going 3 for 3 with a walk. He also was hit by a pitch. … Eugenio Suarez singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games, the longest active streak on the Reds and one shy of his career high.

The Reds called up RH reliever Jackson Stephens and optioned RH reliever Austin Brice to Triple-A Louisville. Stephens was 0-0 with a 4.20 ERA in nine appearances for the Reds earlier this season.

Tigers: Reliever Drew VerHagen left the game in the seventh after getting hit in the face with a throw while covering first base. He broke his nose and had it reset. Manager Ron Gardenhire said the Tigers were working on bringing up another reliever.

Reds: RH Homer Bailey will be re-examined on Tuesday. He’s been sidelined since June 2 with a sore right knee.

Tigers: Michael Fulmer (2-5) has gone seven innings and allowed one run in each of his last two starts. He’s never faced the Reds.

Reds: Tyler Mahle (5-6) is 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA in three starts in June, allowing two runs in 16 1/3 innings. He’s never faced the Tigers.

The deadline for Kevin Durant to opt into his contract with the Warriors for next season passed Friday night without him doing so, making the two-time reigning NBA Finals MVP a free agent – yet his intention has always been to stay put and re-sign with Golden State.

Much like a year ago, Durant declined to opt in for the second year of his deal, allowing him to work on a more lucrative contract once the signing period begins Saturday night.

Durant only had to inform the Warriors if he planned to opt in, and the team had long been prepared for this move – merely a procedural decision – knowing his plans for months.

The 29-year-old Durant could sign for as many as four years and about $160 million. He has made clear all along his commitment to the Warriors, especially after winning a pair of championships in his first two seasons with Golden State.

A year ago Bobby Massie Jersey , Durant declined to opt in for the second year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent. That also was expected as he wanted to do whatever he could to give the franchise financial flexibility to keep the core of the team intact to chase more titles.

Then, the Warriors won another one earlier this month – and Durant hoisted the MVP trophy a second time.

After the season, Warriors general manager Bob Myers said Golden State would reward Durant with ”whatever he wants.”

”Sometimes you don’t negotiate. I’d love to have him for 10 years. Kevin Durant, look what he did for us last year, he did us a great service,” Myers said. ”He’s earned the right to sign whatever deal he wants. I just want him to sign a deal. But want him to be happy and want him to know that we want him as long as he wants to be here. He’s earned that, to kind of lay out the terms. He can do whatever he wants. That shouldn’t be a long negotiation. Our goal, to be honest Tyron Smith Jersey , is to try to keep the whole thing together, so that’s the pieces of the puzzle we’ve got to try to figure out.”

Durant, recipient of the NBA Cares Community Assist award for this past season honoring all his charity efforts, led the Warriors to a finals sweep of LeBron James and the Cavaliers by averaging 28.8 points – he shot 52.6 percent and 40.9 from 3-point range – 10.8 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.00 blocks.

That’s after last postseason when he averaged 28.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 55.6 percent and scoring more than 30 points in nine of his 15 games on the way to a first career championship in his 10th NBA season.

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay turned up the volume on his first-unit offense Eddie Jackson Jersey , blasting the usual training camp soundtrack of rap music even louder as they went through a series of unscripted situational drills Saturday.

It wasn't enough to silence the starters, as wide receiver Brandin Cooks made a loud statement with a series of impressive catches.

"He did a great job today and he's done that over the course of his career," McVay said. "Brandin is an exciting player. I've really been impressed with how quickly he has been able to learn the system, take ownership on the offense, and just getting out here making plays."

Those highlights included catching a crossing route through traffic and making a contested leaping grab on the next play during a team period, showing why the Rams traded for him in April and signed the former Oregon State standout to a five-year extension last month.

With a new contract in hand, Cooks feels free to go all out entering his fifth season.

"I think a lot of guys when you get that (extension), you go even harder just because you know have that security so you just lay it all out there because of the team believing so highly in you," said Cooks Quintin Demps Jersey , who had 65 receptions for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns for New England last season.

Cooks has had at least 1,000 yards receiving and seven touchdown receptions in each of the last three seasons, and early returns in practice have justified McVay's belief that Cooks will be more than a deep threat complimenting fellow starters Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. However, Kupp believes that one aspect of Cooks' skill set will have a major impact on how opposing defenses play against the Rams.

"The most visible sign of someone that's fast is when they catch the deep ball, but you don't see how much that influences things underneath and clears zones out and allows for guys to get open," Kupp said. "For the threat that he is, the way safeties are going to have to play him, it's a huge advantage for us. We just have to make sure we're doing our job Corey Grant Jersey , the other 10 guys on the field."

McVay likes how Cooks fits in with the other receivers on the roster, a group that was overhauled through free agency, the draft and trades last year before sending first and sixth-round picks to the Patriots for Cooks. What stands out to Kupp is how each receiver is capable of filling every role in McVay's system, praising Cooks for integrating into the offense so quickly.

"Our receiving corps, just the guys that we have, there is so much diversity in terms of the strengths of our players that I don't think it's on one person," Kupp said. "It's not one person's job to run this route. It's not only one person that can run the deep route. And because of that, it makes it really easy for us to be able to move around and be diverse in our looks and even harder for the defense to get a bead on."?

The Rams' backups on defense certainly struggled to keep up with quarterback Jared Goff and his collection of receivers. Kupp was especially pleased with how the offense performed in the red zone during practice. Despite leading the NFL in scoring at 29.9 points per game last season, the Rams got touchdowns on 53.4 percent of possessions inside the 20-yard line.

Cooks showed he can help there by tapping his toes down in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown during a red-zone drill.

"He can do a variety of things Jon Weeks Jersey , but it's exciting to be able to work with players like him where you're kind of not really limited in any way you can utilize him," McVay said.

NOTES: Tight end Gerald Everett will not travel with the team next week for joint practices with Baltimore because of a sprained shoulder, McVay said. . Safety Lamarcus Joyner, who has been limited because of a sore Achilles, should return to practice Monday.

Brad Marchand scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Tuukka Rask made 31 saves as the Boston Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Thursday night to take a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Torey Krug and Jake DeBrusk also had goals for the Bruins, who can win the Eastern Conference quarterfinal when they host Game 5 on Saturday at Boston’s TD Garden. David Pastrnak added two assists.

Tomas Plekanec scored the lone goal for the Leafs, who got 18 saves from Frederik Andersen.

Patrice Bergeron, part of a top line that combined for 20 points in the Bruins’ two home victories to open the series, was a surprise late scratch with an upper-body injury. Riley Nash took his spot between Marchand and Pastrnak.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and two assists, and Braden Holtby stopped 23 shots as the Washington Capitals beat the Columbus Blue Jackets to even their playoff series at two games apiece.

Tom Wilson and Alexander Ovechkin each had a goal and an assist, and T.J. Oshie also scored for the workmanlike Capitals, who won this time in regulation after the first three games of the best-of-7 series were decided in overtime. Game 5 is Saturday afternoon in Washington.

Boone Jenner scored for Columbus, and Sergei Bobrovsky had 29 saves.

Second-year Colts general manager Chris Ballard has used five NFL draft picks in two days on prospects he is hoping will toughen up his rebuilding team in the trenches.

Granted Rod Smith Jersey , the needs are numerous for a franchise that finished 4-12 last year and has missed the playoffs for three consecutive years, but Ballard bypassed skill-position players for a second consecutive day with Friday's second-round selections of South Carolina State outside linebacker Darius Leonard, Auburn guard Braden Smith, Rutgers defensive end Kemoko Turay and Ohio State defensive end Tyquan Lewis.

The Colts moved up three spots in a trade with Cleveland to select Lewis with the final choice of the second round. That's four of five players taken who play along the line after Ballard used Thursday's No. 6 overall pick on Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson.

"No question the emphasis on our fronts, the front seven on defense and the O-line," Ballard said. "I had some frustrating moments last year, where I thought physically we didn't match up against teams, especially in our (AFC South) division. It's hard to sustain winning when your foundation, your O-line and your D-line, aren't good."

Nelson and Smith signify a concerted effort to better protect quarterback Andrew Luck Taco Charlton Jersey , who missed all of 2017 due to shoulder surgery. The Colts allowed a league-high 56 sacks last season.

It's just the third time since 1970 that the Colts have used first- and second-round selections on offensive linemen. In 2011, they added current starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo in the opening round and guard Ben Ijalana in the second. In 1997, they drafted eventual Pro Bowl left tackle Tarik Glenn in the first and guard Adam Meadows in the second.

New head coach Frank Reich, an assistant with the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles last season, attributed the championship to the play of the fronts on both sides of the ball.

"It's not a new philosophy," he said. "I'm glad Chris and I share that same belief. That's a conviction we're going to stick to."

Nelson, lauded for his physical style and nastiness, was generally regarded as the draft's best guard prospect. Smith, a 6-6 and 315-pound lineman named to All-SEC teams in his last three years, allowed just 11 hurries in 1 Briean Boddy-Calhoun Jersey ,103 pass-blocking snaps last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

"It's about competition," Reich said. "My experience has been you're not looking for five starters, you're looking for eight or nine starters on the offensive line. That's usually the way it roles in the year. You want that depth."

But a 29th-ranked defense that ranked next to last in sacks is also in need of an identity and playmakers. Leonard, a MEAC defensive player of the year taken with the 36th overall pick, is projected to be a weak-side linebacker who can play all three downs in the Colts' new 4-3 scheme. The 6-2 and 234-pound defender has the skills to not just make tackles but rush the passer and cover tight ends.

"The athlete, the speed, that's what we want at linebacker," Ballard said. "We want guys who can play in space and close to the football. You have to do that with speed."

Leonard boosted his stock against quality competition, particularly with a season-high 19 tackles against Clemson and 14 tackles in the Senior Bowl.

Turay Peyton Manning Jersey , the highest-drafted defensive end in Rutgers history, has impressive pass-rush skills but not the gaudy statistics; he started nine of 12 games and had 65 tackles, seven for loss, with four sacks last season. He's raw and considered somewhat of a project, and his development was slowed by two shoulder surgeries in college.

But Ballard sees tremendous upside.

"He didn't look like a project at the Senior Bowl," Ballard said. "He looked like the freaking best pass rusher at the game."

Smith, a two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, had 9.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks for the Buckeyes last season.

"You win up front," Ballard said. "You win when you rush. You win with speed. That's how we're going to play. We're going to play with waves, seven and eight defensive linemen."

The Colts parted with a sixth-round pick in the Browns deal Kevin Huber Jersey , but added a fifth-round selection in a trade with the Eagles by moving down three spots in the second round before taking Turay. That gives the Colts a fourth-round pick, two in the fifth and one in the seventh as the draft comes to a close on Saturday.

Two significant developments related to the NFL’s new helmet rule took place last week: First, the league announced that “inadvertent” hits wouldn’t be penalized. And then, the officials called fewer penalties.

In the 14 games that took place over the three days following the league’s announcement that “inadvertent” hits wouldn’t be penalized, there were only nine penalties called under the new “lowering the helmet” rule. That’s 0.6 penalties per game. In the previous 33 preseason games, there had been 51 helmet penalties. That’s 1.5 per game.

A sample size of 14 games isn’t enough to draw any major conclusions, but the officials may be getting the message from the league office that on close calls, they should keep their flags in their pockets.

The league’s decision to tell officials not to call “inadvertent” hits may alter this new helmet rule enough to make it a rather minor rule change, rather than the major change it appeared to be.

The Reds (48-68) have gone 16-11 in that span, winning seven of the nine series theyve played. Its not as much the stolen bases as it is just how he affects everything else during the game, Brewers manager Craig Counsell told about Hamilton. Does he affect the pitcher? Thats a big part of what we believe in with the running game, is, Can we affect the pitcher? Can we change his delivery? Can we affect his stuff to the hitter?Miami (61-56) ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 win against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The Marlins are still 8 1/2 games behind Washington in the NL East but are in the thick of the NL wild card race, seeking the franchises first playoff appearance since 2003.Staying in the race with St. Louis, Pittsburgh and the New York Mets got tougher on Sunday when the team placed right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (groin) and pitcher Adam Conley (finger tendonitis) on the 15-day disabled list. An MRI revealed Stanton has a Grade 3 groin strain, putting the rest of the season in jeopardy for him.The best-case scenario is a six-week return, Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Sunday. Theres still an opportunity to get (Stanton) back before the end of the season, but it was a significant injury.Stanton has 25 home runs, 70 RBI and a slugging percentage of .497 this season.Youre disappointed, but its one of those things that you talk about as a ballclub from spring training forward, said Marlins manager Don Mattingly. Nothing can get in our way. Youve just got to move forward.Phelps had 50 relief appearances before starting at Colorado on Aug. 5.Finnegan will be making his 24th start of the season. In his last three starts, hes allowed 12 hits and just three runs in 18 innings. Finnegan has thrown 129 1/3 innings this season, and the Reds are keeping an eye on that total as the end of their season approaches. We could use off days and extra starters in September to give guys longer breaks and allow them to stay in the rotation, Reds manager Bryan Price said. If we stayed with a five-man rotation, at some point the innings will accumulate where he would finish the season in the bullpen. Discount NFL Jerseys . For the first two months of the season, Louisvilles Lamar Jackson dominated every debate about the nations best player. And rightfully so: Its hard to argue with Jacksons 51 touchdowns, 3,390 passing yards and 1,538 rushing yards. But please welcome a new No. 1 player, Oklahomas breakout star receiver Dede Westbrook, to the top of ESPNs CFB Rank through the end of November. We asked 10 writers to grade players from across the country on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the best performance possible. Here are our experts top 50 players after eight weeks.Dede Westbrook Oklahoma Sooners Senior | Wide receiver Score: 9.9 Previous rank: 9 His emergence helped transform the OU offense after a slow start. The 6-foot senior leads the Power 5 in receiving yards per game, and his 11 touchdowns of 40 yards or longer rate as the most by a single player since 1998. Only eight teams nationally have more receptions of 60-plus yards than Westbrooks five. -- Mitch ShermanLamar Jackson Louisville Cardinals Sophomore | Quarterback Score: 9.8 Previous rank: 1Louisville ended the regular season with two losses, but Jackson had an incredible year by any standard. The sophomore racked up 4,928 total yards and an ACC-record 51 touchdowns. He also ranked in the top 11 nationally in rushing, passing, total offense and points scored. He still remains the Heisman Trophy favorite. -- Andrea AdelsonJonathan Allen Alabama Crimson Tide Senior | Defensive lineman? Score: 9.75 Previous rank: 3 The seniors nearly 300-pound frame comes in handy when stopping the run, but dont let that fool you into thinking he isnt athletic. Hes first on the team in quarterback hurries (13), third on sacks (seven) and even has a pair of touchdowns. -- Alex ScarboroughDOnta Foreman Texas Longhorns Junior | Running back Score: 9.7 Previous rank: unranked Foreman is the national leader in rushing yards and rushing attempts; the 250-pound junior served as a battering ram for the Longhorns. Despite upheaval around him, Foreman did not dip below 124 yards in 11 games, finishing with 2,028 -- the second-highest season total at Texas. -- Mitch ShermanJabrill Peppers Michigan Wolverines Junior | Linebacker Score: 9.65 Previous rank: 2The different ways he contributes make it hard to quantify Peppers impact on a game. His 6.2 yards per carry, 14.5 yards per punt return and team-leading 16 tackles for loss, though, speak to the always-present threat for him to make a big play. -- Dan MurphyAdoree Jackson USC Trojans Junior | Defensive back Score: 9.6 Previous rank: 41Jackson is garnering late Heisman Trophy buzz, especially after his three-touchdown effort against Notre Dame. He scored on a kick return, a punt return and a reception, celebrating with a Heisman pose in the end zone that he later said was an homage to former USC running back Reggie Bush. Jackson is a superhuman athlete who leads USC with four interceptions and is fourth on the team with 51 tackles, so hes excelling in all phases. Maybe hell throw a touchdown pass in USCs bowl game. -- David LombardiJourdan Lewis Michigan Wolverines Senior | Cornerback Score: 9.55 Previous rank: 17 The Thorpe Award finalist has been thwarting receivers consistently for two years. With 11 pass breakups and two interceptions this season, Lewis has put his hands on a pass thrown in his direction more often than the intended target. -- Dan MurphyDalvin Cook Florida State Seminoles Junior | Running back Score: 9.5 Previous rank: 15Remember way back in September when everyone was asking whats wrong with Cook? Since the Louisville loss, Cook has rushed for 100 yards in eight of nine games, and with his introduction to the passing game, he is second among Power 5 players in scrimmage yards with 2,046. -- Jared ShankerBaker Mayfield Oklahoma Sooners Junior | Quarterback Score: 9.45 Previous rank: 30The 6-foot-1 junior leads the nation in QBR, passer-efficiency rating and yards per attempt, while ranking second in completion percentage and fifth in touchdown passes. Mayfield has led the Sooners to eight consecutive wins while throwing 28 touchdowns and four interceptions. -- Mitch ShermanDonnel Pumphrey San Diego State Aztecs Senior | Running back Score: 9.4 Previous rank: 5Pumphrey needs to average 109 yards per game in his final two contests -- the Mountain West Championship and a bowl game -- to pass Ron Dayne atop the NCAA all-time rushing list. As it stands, Pumphrey broke his own SDSU single-season rushing record (1,908 yards) and has 15 rushing touchdowns this season, giving him 65 total TDs for his career, which is tied for ninth all-time in FBS. -- David LombardiDeshaun Watson Clemson Tigers Junior | Quarterback Score: 9.35 Previous rank: 8The Clemson QB has been under the microscope all season thanks to sky-high expectations, but while his interception totals are up and his rushing numbers are down, he still has the Tigers poised for a playoff bid. Moreover, no QB in the country was better over the final month of the season, when Watson completed 75 percent of his passes with 15 total touchdowns and 1,411 total yards. -- David M. HaleReuben Foster Alabama Crimson Tide Senior | Linebacker Score: 9.3 Previous rank: 11 If Fosters No. 1 job is to quarterback the defense, hes doing quite well at it. Alabama hasnt given up a touchdown all month. Whats more, hes a playmaker with 83 tackles, which is 20 more than the nearest teammate. -- Alex ScarboroughMinkah Fitzpatrick Alabama Crimson Tide Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 9.25 Previous rank: 14 Good luck finding a more versatile defensive back in the SEC. He started the season at corner, shifted to safety to fill in for Eddie Jackson and has a team-high four interceptions. -- Alex ScarboroughRaekwon McMillan Ohio State Buckeyes Junior | Linebacker Score: 9.2 Previous rank: 12The juniors individual numbers are slightly down from his sophomore season, but there has never been any question from Ohio States coaching staff that the captain and defensive quarterback is playing at the highest level of his career with so much youth around him. -- Austin WardAmba Etta-Tawo Syracuse Orange Senior | Wide receiver Score: 9.15 Previous rank: 33The Maryland graduate transfer made the most of his fifth and final college year, catching 94 passes for 1,482 yards and 14 touchdowns, including a program single-game record of five touchdowns in the finale at Pitt. That game also marked his seventh 100-yard receiving game, which is a school single-season record. -- Matt FortunaMalik Hooker Ohio State Buckeyes Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 9.1 Previous rank: 20With no prior starting experience for the Buckeyes, the redshirt sophomore blossomed into arguably the nations most opportunistic defender with six interceptions, including three returned for TDs. If he returns for another season, look out. -- Austin WardJake Browning Washington Huskies Sophomore | Quarterback Score: 9.05 Previous rank: 4He has thrown a touchdown pass on 12.2 percent of his attempts this season, which is on pace to break a 47-year-old FBS record. Browning seems to be the perfect QB at the controls of Chris Petersens hyper-efficient attack. The quarterback has manipulated defenses masterfully, and his 40 touchdown passes is best in the Pac-12. Mistakes have been few and far between, and the sophomores progress this season is the biggest reason why Washington is playing for a Pac-12 championship and a playoff berth. -- David LombardiDerek Barnett Tennessee Volunteers Junior | Defensive end Score: 9.0 Previous rank: 6 With 12 sacks on the season, Barnett now has 32 for his career, tying Tennessee sack leader Reggie White (1980-83). Barnett has recorded at least 10 sacks in each of his three seasons at Tennessee, and he also has an SEC-high 18 tackles for loss this season. -- Edward AschoffChristian McCaffrey Stanford Cardinal Junior | Running back Score: 8.95 Previous rank: unranked McCaffrey has been even better this season than during his record-breaking 2015 run, but his supporting cast has been worse. Consider this: McCaffrey is averaging 146 rushing yards per game on 6.3 yards per attempt this season, compared to 144 rushing yards per game on 6.0 yards per attempt last season. That comes despite playing through injury, alongside new quarterbacks, and behind a worse offensive line. Will McCaffrey declare for the NFL draft after this season? -- David LombardiDemarcus Walker Florida State Seminoles Senior | Defensive end Score: 8.90 Previous rank: 27 When Walker returned to Florida State for his senior season, he did so with the goal of reaching 15 sacks and forcing himself into any discussion regarding the schools best pass-rushers. He reached 15 sacks, tied for most in the country, and he is third on the Seminoles career sacks list. Hell be remembered most for coming up with big plays, like the Block at Hard Rock, which sealed a seventh straight win over Miami. -- Jared ShankerMyles Garrett Texas A&M Aggies Junior | Defensive line Score: 8.85 Previous rank: 7 Despite playing 10 games and being bothered by a leg injury for half the season, Garrett still finished fourth in the SEC in tackles for loss (15) and sixth in sacks (8.5). When healthy, he was one of the countrys best defensive players. -- Sam KhanEd Oliver Houston Cougars Freshman | Defensive tackle Score: 8.80 Previous rank: unranked Oliver was simply dominant, particularly in Houstons biggest games. He is ninth nationally in tackles for loss (19.5) and first among defensive linemen in pass breakups (nine). He was one of the biggest reasons Houston upset both Oklahoma and Louisville, with two sacks apiece. -- Sam KhanSaquon Barkley Penn State Nittany Lions Sophomore | Running back Score: 8.75 Previous rank: 46 A truly gifted backfield weapon, Barkley put the program on his back to lead the Nittany Lions resurgence. Nobody in the Big Ten found the end zone more often than Barkley, who finished the regular season with 17 touchdowns. -- Austin WardChristian Wilkins Clemson Tigers Sophomore | Defensive line Score: 8.70 Previous rank: 16 Its true that Wilkins isnt the ACCs best edge rusher. His 3.5 sacks ranked 36th in the league. But looking at Wilkins as a standard defensive end misses the point. He has worked both inside and out on the line, racked up 12 tackles for loss, broken up seven passes, plaayed on offense and special teams, scoring a TD and blocking a crucial field goal in a Tigers overtime win against NC State. Cheap NFL Jerseys China. He does a little bit of everything, and he does it all really well. -- David M. HaleBudda Baker Washington Huskies Junior | Defensive back Score: 8.65 Previous rank: 28 The Huskies have the top-ranked run defense and the second-ranked pass defense in the Pac-12, and Baker is a big part of both efforts. Hes the field general of Washingtons imposing secondary. Baker has been especially impressive in run support this season, covering big ground and beating blocks whenever opponents try to take it to the perimeter. Hes second on the Huskies with 61 tackles and leads the team with nine tackles for loss and has two interceptions. -- David LombardiTeez Tabor Florida Gators Junior | Defensive back Score: 8.60 Previous rank: 13 Tabor hasnt had the eye-popping stats this season, but hes still considered a first-round draft pick with his excellent shutdown corner skills. He has four interceptions and has defended nine passes on the season. -- Edward AschoffJohn Ross III Washington Huskies Junior | Wide receiver Score: 8.55 Previous rank: unranked Ross is likely the fastest player in the Pac-12 -- he ran a 4.25 hand-timed 40-yard dash this past offseason -- and his speed has opened up big windows for the rest of Washingtons receiving corps. No secondary has been able to completely shut down Ross, and he leads all Power 5 receivers with 16 touchdown catches. Hes also a threat on special teams, averaging 26.8 yards on kickoff returns. -- David LombardiT.J. Watt Wisconsin Badgers Junior | Linebacker Score: 8.50 Previous rank: 36 Only two linebackers in college football have more sacks than Watts 9.5 this season. More importantly, hes the leader and catalyst of a Wisconsin defense that is ranked third in the nation in points allowed and rushing yards allowed. -- Dan MurphyDesmond King Iowa Hawkeyes Senior | Defensive back Score: 8.45 Previous rank: 24 Quarterbacks have largely steered clear of King, making it a sometimes frustrating season for the defending Thorpe Award winner. He did take one of his two interceptions this season back to the house and has been able to regularly contribute in the return game. -- Dan MurphyMike Williams Clemson Tigers Junior | Wide receiver Score: 8.40 Previous rank: unranked Its almost hard to figure how Clemson survived last season without Williams, who missed nearly the entire year with a neck injury. Now that hes back, he has proven to be one of the countrys most dynamic receiving threats, racking up 79 catches, 1,114 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 27 targets in the red zone this season are tops in the nation, and he has caught nine of them for TDs. -- David M. HaleJalen Hurts Alabama Crimson Tide Freshman | Quarterback Score: 8.35 Previous rank: 26 The true freshman has executed the zone-read to near perfection in Tuscaloosa and now has seven games in which he has thrown and run for a touchdown. This season, Hurts, who could sneak into the Heisman talk, has 2,454 passing yards, 840 rushing yards and 32 total touchdowns. -- Edward AschoffJuJu Smith-Schuster USC Trojans Junior | Wide receiver Score: 8.30 Previous rank: unranked Smith-Schuster entered the season as the Pac-12s top NFL draft prospect at receiver, and although his numbers have dropped following a very productive 2015, hes still having a good season: 63 catches, 781 yards and nine receiving touchdowns. Quarterback Sam Darnold has done an excellent job spreading the ball around, so its not a one-man show at USC. -- David LombardiEjuan Price Pittsburgh Panthers Senior | Defensive line Score: 8.25 Previous rank: 23 Price proved once again he is among the best pass-rushers in the country, racking up 12 sacks (tied for fifth nationally), 21 tackles for loss (second nationally) and 13 quarterback hurries. Exactly half of his 42 total tackles this season were behind the line of scrimmage. -- Andrea AdelsonTim Williams Alabama Crimson Tide Senior | Linebacker Score: 8.20 Previous rank: 10 One word comes up among opposing coaches when discussing Williams: elite. Using speed and power, the outside linebacker is a menace off the edge, leading Alabama with eight sacks. -- Alex ScarboroughJake Butt Michigan Wolverines Senior | Tight end Score: 8.15 Previous rank: unranked The steady, sure-handed tight end made 43 catches for 518 yards in an offense that likes to spread the ball to all of its many options. He took strides as a blocker this season that should help his NFL draft stock. -- Dan MurphyJames Conner Pittsburgh Panthers Junior | Running back Score: 8.10 Previous rank: unranked What more can be said about this cancer conqueror? Conner notched his second career 1,000-yard season, this after missing nearly all of 2015 with an MCL tear (before beating Hodgkin lymphoma in the offseason). He also has 56 career total touchdowns, which is an ACC record (along with an ACC-record 52 career rushing touchdowns). -- Matt FortunaEthan Pocic LSU Tigers Senior | Center Score: 8.05 Previous rank: 37 The LSU senior showed his versatility by chipping in at left tackle this season, but he returned to his natural position, center, where he helped the Tigers boast one of the nations top rushing attacks at 238.1 yards per game. -- David ChingCarl Lawson Auburn Tigers Junior | Defensive line Score: 8.00 Previous rank: 29 Lawson excelled in the SEC this season, recording 28 tackles with 13 for loss. The defensive ends 9.5 sacks tied for third in the conference. -- David ChingTarvarus McFadden Florida State Seminoles Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 7.95 Previous rank: unranked It was a tough first five games for McFadden, who gave up a handful of big plays and was called for a crucial pass interference in the loss to North Carolina. He has emerged as one of the countrys best cornerbacks over the seasons second half, however, and his eight interceptions are tied for the national lead. Moving forward, quarterbacks will be reluctant to throw the ball at him. -- Jared ShankerPat Elflein Ohio State Buckeyes Senior | Offensive line Score: 7.90 Previous rank: 32 The decision to return for another season clearly paid off for the senior, who moved over to center, enhanced his draft stock and set up the Buckeyes for another run at a national title. Ohio State will miss him dearly when hes gone. -- Austin WardSam Darnold USC Trojans Freshman | Quarterback Score: 7.85 Previous rank: unranked He makes a strong case to be considered the Pac-12s best quarterback, and its hard to find another player who so singularly transformed a teams fortunes. Darnolds QBR is second nationally to only Oklahomas Baker Mayfield. His athleticism and excellent pocket awareness is on display every week. USCs win over Notre Dame featured more impressive escapes and accurate throws downfield. Expect Darnold to continue his rapid climb up this list. -- David LombardiJ.T. Barrett Ohio State Buckeyes Junior | Quarterback Score: 7.80 Previous rank: 25 Barrett slipped a bit in the national pecking order by his own sky-high standards, thanks to some rough patches as a passer. But where would the Buckeyes be without him? Certainly not 11-1 and in position for a spot in the College Football Playoff. -- Austin WardZay Jones East Carolina Pirates Senior | Wide receiver Score: 7.75 Previous rank: unranked How good was Jones this season? He hauled in 158 catches, which not only led the nation but was 45 more than anyone else in the country. The difference between Jones and the No. 2 pass catcher was the same as the difference between No. 2 and No. 33. In the process, he set the NCAA mark for receptions and totaled 1,746 yards -- 44 percent of ECUs team total. -- David M. HaleJames Washington Oklahoma State Cowboys Junior | Wide receiver Score: 7.70 Previous rank: 43 His 296 receiving yards against Pitt remain the most by any player against a Power 5 opponent this season. The 6-foot junior leads all active players with 25 career TD catches, and hes one of three players this season with 60 or more catches to average 19 yards per reception. -- Mitch ShermanDorian Johnson Pittsburgh Panthers Senior | Offensive line Score: 7.65 Previous rank: unranked Johnson was the stalwart on the best offensive line in the ACC, and he helped pave the way for the Panthers to average 229.8 yards per game on the ground. He also helped keep quarterback Nathan Peterman upright; Johnson did not surrender a sack this season. -- Andrea AdelsonBen Boulware Clemson Tigers Senior | Linebacker Score: 7.60 Previous rank: 35 Boulware is the heart and soul of a Clemson defense that has continued its winning ways under coordinator Brent Venables. The senior leads the team with 103 tackles, including nine for loss and four sacks. Everyone noticed, as Boulware led defensive players in All-ACC voting. -- Matt FortunaCam Robinson Alabama Crimson Tide Junior | Offensive line Score: 7.55 Previous rank: 42 His junior season started off a bit rocky, but Robinson has found some balance of late, keeping premier pass-rushers such as Texas A&Ms Myles Garrett and Auburns Carl Lawson off quarterback Jalen Hurts. -- Alex ScarboroughEvan Engram Ole Miss Rebels Senior | Tight end Score: 7.50 Previous rank: 34 Despite not playing the final game due to injury, Engram still led all SEC tight ends in receptions, yards and touchdowns. His 926 receiving yards was second among all players in the conference and first among all tight ends nationally. -- Greg OstendorfArden Key LSU Tigers Sophomore | Defensive end Score: 7.45 Previous rank: 19 Key established himself as one of the nations top pass-rushers, ranking second in the SEC with 10 sacks. As one of 15 FBS players with double-digit sacks, Key is the only member of the group who appeared in just 10 games. -- David ChingCarlos Watkins Clemson Tigers Sophomore | Defensive end Score: 7.40 Previous rank: 44 Watkins has been a steady force for the interior of Clemsons defensive line since last season, but he is in the middle of a career year in 2016. The 305-pound tackle leads the Tigers with a career-high 7.5 sacks to go with 60 tackles and 12 quarterback hurries. --Andrea Adelson Wholesale NFL White Jerseys Wholesale NFL White Jerseys Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys Wholesale NFL Womens Jerseys Cheap NFL Gear China NFL Jerseys White Wholesale Jerseys Free Shipping White NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China China Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Youth NFL Jerseys Wholesale Cheap NFL Jerseys Throwback Cheap Jerseys Throwback Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- More cuts will be made to services for athletes at the Paralympics next month unless additional funding is rapidly secured for the cash-strapped games in Rio de Janeiro, officials said Monday. NHL Jerseys Cheap .Crisis talks were held Monday by International Paralympic Committee President Philip Craven with the Brazilian government and Rios mayor in a late attempt to preserve the quality of the games in recession-battered Brazil. The IPC has warned that countries might not be able to travel to Rio if they do not receive grants that should have been paid last month. An effort is underway to distribute $7 million in overdue grants to help nations get to Brazil for the Sept. 7-18 event.Craven said an injunction prevents new public funding going toward the Paralympics unless the Rio 2016 organizing committee opens up its books. He said Mayor Eduardo Paes was prepared to deliver 150 million reals ($47 million) to cover costs and to ensure the success of the games.Paes says the money is vital for the games, which he says have failed to attract sponsors and sell tickets.Clearly, the simplest and easiest way around this is for the Rio 2016 organizing committee to be open and transparent with its financial records in order to allow this additional funding to come in.Craven described the situation as pretty precarious, but doesnt believe any sports will be cut from the Paralympic program. If no extra funding is available then the organizing committee will have to implement further cuts to the Paralympic Games on top of the cuts we have already made alongside the IOC and Olympics. NASHVILLE, Tenn. Wholesale Jerseys From China . -- The Denver Broncos find themselves in catch-up mode in the mighty AFC West, and time is starting to run out for the defending Super Bowl champs to gain ground on Oakland and Kansas City.We understand this stretch, where were at and how well were going to have to play, but were excited and looking forward to it, Denver coach Gary Kubiak said. For the Tennessee Titans, hosting the Broncos on Sunday is the biggest game this franchise has played in years.Yes, really. The Titans (6-6) share the AFC South lead with both Houston and Indianapolis, a spot Tennessee hasnt held this late in a season since 2008 when winning the division wire-to-wire for the teams most recent playoff berth. The Titans have had four chances to climb above .500 this season and lost each time. Now they are well-rested coming off their latest bye in franchise history, and linebacker Brian Orakpo believes everyones refreshed and ready to chase a playoff berth after finishing the 2015 season with the No. 1 overall draft pick.Theyre fighting for a position, and were fighting for a position, Orakpo said. Its definitely going to be a great game. The Broncos are working through the NFLs toughest finishing stretch after their overtime loss to Kansas City and a 20-10 win in Jacksonville last week, and now they hit the road again. Then it gets really challenging with a visit from New England before Denver goes to Kansas City and wraps up the season hosting Oakland. We know were going to have to play really, really well, Kubiak said. Well, were going to have to play great if were going to get there, and we know that. Here are some things to know as the Broncos and Titans chase a playoff berth:WHOS AT QB: Kubiak is hoping Trevor Siemian is back after missing the Jacksonville win with a left mid-foot sprain. Rookie Paxton Lynch, who played collegiately at Memphis, got his first career win against the Jaguars, but completed only half his passes for 104 yards.Siemian threw for a career-high 386 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the 30-27 overtime loss to Kansas City. Kubiak said they will have both quarterbacks ready to play Sunday.MARIOTA STREAKING: The Titans have no such questions at quarterback with Marcus Mariota a big reason why they have won five of their past eight games. He has set a franchise record in throwing at least two TDs in each of the past eight games, and he has thrown 21 TDs with just three interceptions in that span. Mariota leads the NFL with a 117.7 passer rating and the Titans lead the NFL in scoring an average of 30.8 points per game since Oct. 6.I think the same Mariota you saw in college, thats the same quarterback youre seeing now, Broncos linebacker Von Miller said. Its rare that you find a quarterback that has that success in college and continues to have the same type of success in the National Football League. Mariota, hes doing it.GET THE BALL: The Broncos have scored a league-high 103 points off turnovers and will test Mariotas improved ball security. Opponents scored five TDs earlier this season off the Titans quarterbacks interceptions and fumbles, but the Titans have not turned the ball over even once over the past three games.DEFENSIVE SHOWDOWN: Denver has the NFLs stingiest defense against the pass, giving up just 192.7 yards per game. But the Broncos will have to find a way to slow down DeMarco Murray, the leagues second-best rusher. The Titans rank third in the league in averaging 141.5 yards per game with run defense a big issue for Denver, which is 28th in allowing 122.8 yards per game.Titans coach Mike Mularkey said Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is too smart not to be ready to stop the run. And well be ready to throw it against their No. 1 pass defense, Mularkey said.THIN BACKFIELD: Running back Justin Forsett, 31, was claimed off waivers Monday from Detroit and is expected to play in Tennessee. The Broncos have three running backs on injured reserve with Kapri Bibbs the latest after spraining his left ankle in Jacksonville. The Titans are giving up just 92.3 yards rushing per game, seventh in the NFL.---For more NFL coverage: and .---Follow Teresa M. Walker at Wholesale Stitched Jerseys . Alfredssons agent, J.P. Barry, confirmed the news to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger on Friday morning. "He brings to the table not only talent, but the intangibles are just as important for the most part: leadership, character, the willingness to work with young players," Senators general manager Bryan told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of "Its nice to hear that he wants to play. Now its just a matter of getting a contract done with him." Murray also said he is ready to get to work on a new deal for his captain. "We were informed late this morning by Daniels agent, JP Barry, that Daniel has made a decision and is committed to play next year for the Senators," Murray said Friday in a statement. "We now will begin the process of negotiating a contract, which we hope to have completed in the near future." Swedish television station SVT World spoke to Alfredsson this week. "Ive never been so tireed after a season earlier, even though it was so short," Alfredsson told the station. Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping. "I needed some time to think about the future, but the important thing is that the urge is there." Alfredsson returned to Sweden with his family following their postseason exit. He met with Murray prior to leaving and said he would likely give him a decision on his future by Draft Day. "I came home to Sweden on Monday and felt I can do this one more summer," he said. "I feel a little excited to get going and start exercising. "The body has felt good lately. I missed a game this season and that was because I had a cold. In this way it has been positive, I have been freshened and it has affected my decision." The 40-year-old, whos an unrestricted free agent, must now negotiate a new contract with Murray. If the two sides do agree on a new deal, Murray cant officially re-sign him until the free agency window opens July 5. It matched James Madisons 21-16 win over No. 13 Virginia Tech in 2010 for the second-highest FBS team to lose to an FCS team. Appalachian State stunned No. 5 Michigan 34-32 to open the 2007 season.Iowa (2-1) had been 13-0 against FCS teams.Thats a great football team we beat, said Klieman, a native of Waterloo and a graduate of Northern Iowa. Im so proud of our guys. You cant tell anybody in our locker room were not good enough to beat anybody. Thats the heart of a champion.Pedersen had missed a 50-yard field goal with NDSU trailing 21-14 early in the fourth quarter. But his game-winner capped a drive in which the Bison got the ball at their 34 with 1:53 left. Easton Stick went 29 yards on a quarterback draw to start the possession.NDSU had closed within 21-20 on Sticks 7-yard touchdown pass to Chase Morlock with 3:41 left in the game, and rather than try for the extra point to tie it, the Bison went for the two-point conversion but a pass failed. If we didnt make it, I thought we could stop them, Klieman said. I thought our offense was kind of wearing them down. The NDSU defense stopped Iowas ensuing possession, with safety Robbie Grimsley sacking Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard for a 9-yard loss on third down.Beathard passed for three touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Matt VandeBerg. But NDSU imposed its will, owning the game clock for 36 minutes, 40 seconds while outgaining the Hawkeyes 363-231 in total yards, including 239-34 on the ground.King Frazier carried the ball 16 times for 99 yards and a touchdown. Stick, a redshirt sophomore who is 11-0 as a starter, was 11 of 19 for 124 yards and a touchdown with one interception.NDSUs first touchdown came on MJ Stumpfs 21-yard interception return with 2:26 left in the first quarter. Fellow linebacker Pierre Gee-Tucker hit Beathard from his blind side and the quarterbacks pass popped in the air to Stumpf, who had open space to the end zone and a 7-0 Bison lead.Am I shocked that we lost? Yeah, to an extent, Iowa defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson said. But those guys came ready to play. Ilonen finished 54 holes at Bro Hof Slott Golf Club at 18-under-par 198. He will try for his third career win on the European Tour and his first since 2007 on Sunday. "I need to shoot another low score and I can do it, but weve got 18 holes to go and lots of other guys are still hunting me," Ilonen said. Ilonens mark was not the low round of the day, however, as Alexander Noren did one better with an 8-under 64 to move into second place at 16-under. Matteo Manassero, who held at least a share of the lead at the end of both the first and second rounds, tripped to a double bogey at his final hole en route to a 1-under 71, dropping him into a share of third place with Jonas Blixt (66) at minus-14. Rikard Karlberg (67) owns sole possession of fifth at 12-under, while Bernd Wiesberger matched Norens 64 to move into a sixth-place tie with Thomas Bjorn (68) and Joost Luiten (70) at 11-under 205. Ilonen started his charge up the leaderboard with a 12-foot birdie putt at the second, and later picked up a couple more strokes at the sixth and ninth to hit the turn at 14-under, moving a stroke ahead of overnight leader Manassero. The 2007 winner of this event then hit his approach to three feet at the 13th and kicked that in for a birdie before rolling in another short birdie effort at the 14th. On the next hole, Ilonen saw his third shot land just beyond the pin and spin back into the cup for an eagle to mmove to 18-under. Cheap College Football Jerseys. "It was raining and I just tried to squeeze it in there and got lucky with it a bit," Ilonen said about the shot. He closed with three straight pars to stay there. Noren, meanwhile, opened with a blistering pace as he collected three birdies over his first four holes, capping the run with an 80-foot putt at the fourth. A bogey at the fifth briefly halted his momentum, but he quickly recovered with a birdie at the sixth. After a pair of pars, the Swede hit his second shot at the par-5 ninth to about 10 feet and converted the eagle putt to make the turn at 13-under. He picked up a couple more shots with consecutive birdies at the 12th and 13th before pouring in another long birdie putt from 40 feet at the 16th to reach 16-under. "I hit a lot of good putts and I holed a lot of them -- I dont know where it came from, amazing putting," said Noren. "Ive played here a lot; Im from an hour away, its the best course in Sweden and it is a beautiful place." Manassero made the turn at even par on the day after trading a bogey at the fifth with a birdie at the ninth. After a string of three straight birdies from the 13th moved him into a share of second with Noren, he dumped his second shot at the 18th into the water en route to a double bogey to finish four strokes off the pace. NOTES: Noren won here in 2011 and is seeking his fourth career win on the European Tour ... Manassero became the youngest-ever winner of the BMW PGA Championship last week ... NASHVILLE, Tenn. Cheap MLB Jerseys . -- Two men who helped integrate college basketball came back to Vanderbilt University this week to share provocative views on the pace of change, take up matters they rarely dared to address as students, and describe the racism they encountered on their journey -- indignities they once endured in silence on the Southern campus. The return of Perry Wallace and Godfrey Dillard, part of a candid conversation unfolding this year at Vanderbilt, marks the latest milestone in the schools long, sometimes painful history with race relations. It had been 50 years since Wallace and Dillard huddled together in the locker room at halftime of a freshman game in Starkville, Mississippi, holding hands and trembling after rival fans spat, yelled slurs and threw things at them on the court.Like many Southern universities a half-century ago, Vanderbilt had few black students and faculty members. Those who did enroll were excluded from fraternities, sororities, clubs and religious organizations, and often faced segregation at hotels and restaurants when traveling away from campus.Today, as campuses across the nation see a resurgence of activism and try to come to terms with institutional racism, the wide lawns and stately buildings at Vanderbilt could not be called a hotbed of protest. But the school has more black faculty members and students, who say theyre sometimes the only faces of color in a class but have more people to talk to about their experiences. In recent years, university officials have made clear that diverse opinions are part of Vanderbilts fabric -- a point they made once again by inviting Wallace and Dillard back to campus.Wallace, the first black basketball player in the Southeastern Conference, had been back to his alma mater occasionally. But Vanderbilt had never invited Dillard to return, in part because his time at the elite private school ended early in his junior year. Both men say Dillards activism led to his demotion from the basketball team. As campuses nationwide roiled with unrest, Wallace, who grew up in Nashville, said his teammate from Detroit didnt know how to be a slave. Dillard, who was president of the Afro-American Student Association, pushed for more black professors and students and for better pay for campus workers.Things began to thaw for Wallace and Dillard at Vanderbilt after Strong Inside, a 2014 book by Andrew Maraniss, brought their story back to the forefront. It became required reading for incoming freshmen. An art exhibit on race, sports and Vanderbilt opened last week. This week, Wallace and Dillard joined Maraniss for the James Lawson lecture, named for a black civil rights icon with his own Vanderbilt story. Lawson was expelled from Vanderbilts divinity school in 1960 for teaching the art of nonviolent protest. He later was welcomed back as a distinguished professor and alumnus.Meeting with mostly minority students during a Tuesday luncheon at the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, Wallace called it a shame that current black students still have some of the same concerns he and Dillard did.Devastated by his demotion, Dillard went home to Detroit. He finished college at Eastern Michigan University, earned a law degree from the University of Michigan, and went on to become a civil rights lawyer. When his turn came to speak, he struggled for composure. This is the first time in 50 years that this school has invited me back, he told the students. Ive been invisible for a long time.Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos extolled Vanderbilts pioneering role in integrating SEC basketball but said things could have been handled better. We always want to be more inclusive, more diverse, to ask hard questions, Zeppos said. But we cant go forward without understanding our history.Athletic Director David Williams, who is black and also from Detroit, pushed to invite Dillard back. He noted that Zeppos recently pushed a pay increase through for university staff but said more progress is needed.During the Lawson lecture, attended by the entire freshman class, Wallace, an American University law professor, encouraged subversive thinking, advising the students to steal away to a place where they could form their own opinions.Dillard, who successfully defended race-based admissions at the University of Michigan in a case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, called the diverse assortment of students faces in Langford Auditorium a beautiful sight. Fewer than two dozen black students were enrolled when he was at Vanderbilt. Now, about 13 percent of faculty and 17 percent of undergraduate students are minorities. If it wasnt for their sacrifices, I wouldnt have it as easy here and couldnt focus on academics and feel comfortable on campus, said Tuzo Mwarumba, a black freshman from Stillwater, Oklahoma. Things are definitely improving, and Im glad Vanderbilt has taken the time to focus on inclusion. And Im grateful that they recognize that theres work here still to be done. The shared experience of being a minority student at Vanderbilt and the need to not go it alone bridged a 50-year divide. That became clear at the luncheon, when Dillard thanked Wallace for making sure he was invited back.Nobody wants to go to war alone, Dillard said. You always want to have one person with you -- so if you dont make it, at least the other person can tell what happened. Chelsea came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Manchester City at the Eithad in Saturdays early kick-off. Wholesale NBA Jerseys .A well-contested first half saw few chances for either side, but it was City who broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime. Gary Cahill inadvertently sent the ball into his own net following Jesus Navas drilled cross, an unfortunate blemish in an otherwise impressive performance from the Chelsea defender. The tempo was raised in the second half, with City missing two opportunities to widen the gap early on. Sergio Agueros effort was hacked off the line by Cahill moments before Kevin De Bruyne missed a sitter from point-blank range. The hosts were made to pay as Diego Costa raced through on goal to beat Claudio Bravo shortly after. From there, Chelsea outshone the Citizens, frequently causing problems on the break. Willian put the visitors ahead with Costa heavily involved in the build-up play, and City never really fought back from then on. Eden Hazard made sure of the three points as he finished another counter-attack off.The game ended on a bitter note as Aguero was sent off for a terrible high challenge on Luiz, which sparked a mass kickoff. Fernandinho was also expelled for pushing Cesc Fabregas in the aftermath. An excellent performance from Chelsea earns them their eighth straight win. For City, lots to think about. BOSTON -- Rick Porcellos performance has flown under the radar this season. He didnt make the American League All-Star team despite a 10-2 record and 3.82, but hes been one of the bright spots for a shaky Boston Red Sox pitching staff.Porcello will try to keep that trend going in Saturday afternoons game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, the second of a three-game series that takes both teams into the All-Star break. After signing a five-year, $82.5 million deal before even throwing a pitch and struggling through a 9-15 campaign last year, nobody knew what Porcello would give the Red Sox going forward. Thus far, Boston has received 10 victories from a pitcher who won 15 games with the Detroit Tigers in 2014.Porcello is 4-0 with five no-decisions in his last nine starts. He gave up 12 hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings against the Los Angeles Angels last Sunday, but cruised behind his teams 21-hit attack, adding another notch to his Fenway belt.He did bend, he didnt break, Red Sox manager John Farrell said that day, noting, Pors has been extremely comfortable at home here.He is 7-0 in eight starts at Fenway Park, making him one of three pitchers in the major leagues without a loss in the first eight home starts of the 2016 season.Porcello is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA against Tampa Bay this season and 7-4 lifetime, and his seven straight quality starts against the Rays is the longest active streak in the big leagues.Tampa hitters have some impressive numbers against Porcello. Evan Longoria is 8-for-13, Logan Forsythe is 6-for-17 and Steven Sousa Jr. is 6-for-15.Brad Miller is 2-for-8, but both Miller hits have been home runs.Meanwhile, tthe Red Sox are dealing with all kinds of injuries as they look to complete a 6-2 homestand -- losing All-Star utility man Brock Holt, among others, to a left ankle sprain in Fridays 6-5 win. Im not really sure whats going on there. SEATTLE -- Jake Browning has thrown for 581 yards and eight touchdowns in Washingtons first two games. Wholesale NFL Jerseys .Though Browning as yet to play in a fourth quarter in No. 8 Washingtons victories against lesser opponents Rutgers and Idaho, coach Chris Petersen believes he has even more to offer with a little more refinement.Browning matched Washingtons school record with five touchdown passes -- two each to Dante Pettis and John Ross -- and finished with 294 yards in the No. 8 Huskies 59-14 romp over Idaho on Saturday.Browning has helped Washington (2-0) to its highest ranking since 2001.Hes done a real nice job, head coach Chris Petersen said of Browning. Hes completing a lot of passes. Hes keeping his eyes downfield. Hes buying time, all those things that good quarterbacks do.After throwing for 287 yards and three touchdowns last week against Rutgers, Browning was nearly flawless against Idaho. He completed 23 of 28 passes for 294 yards and deferred to backup K.J. Carta-Samuels after the opening drive of the third quarter following his fifth touchdown pass of the day, an 8-yard strike to Ross that gave Washington a 42-0 lead. While the production has been stellar, its the process that will yield the consistency needed when conference play begins. Thats where Petersen feels there is still room to grow.I think the thing that is interesting is I still think there is some things were cleaning up with him, Petersen said. When you go back, what I really want to look at is did he need to escape? Did he have things he could have got the ball out? I know on one early on -- I think he threw a touchdown -- I think he didnt need to make it so spectacular.Against Idaho, it was still more than enough.Following a fumble on the opening kickoff by Lloyd Hightower that was recovered by Washington, Browning threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Pettis on his first attempt of the game. He completed 13 consecutive passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns in the second quarter as the Huskies built a 35-0 halftime advantage. We didnt really do anything crazy, Browning said. Just go in, run our stuff and execute well.Browning joined Keith Price (2012), Jake Locker (2010) and Chris Rowland (1973) as the only Huskies to throw five touchdown passes in a game. The Vandals (1-1) kept it in reach in the first quarter. Kaden Elliss forced a fumble on a sack of Browning to give Idaho the ball in Washington territory. But after driving into the red zone, Jacob Sannon fumbled at the 1 after a hit from Jojo McIntosh, and Azeem Victor recovered to keep Idaho out of the end zone.We got whooped, Idaho coach Paul Petrino said. We got whooped but I thought our guys stayed fighting in the second half.Washington scored 35 straight points afterward before the Vandals finally got on the board with a 20-yard pass from Matt Linehan to Trent Cowan in the third quarter.THE TAKEAWAYIdaho: Idaho lost its road opener against Pac-12 foe USC 59-9 in 2015. The Vandals foray against Pac-12 opposition wasnt much better. The Vandals forced just six incompletions in 33 pass attempts by Washington. Theyll face an even more pass-happy opponent in Washington State next week.Washington: The Huskies defense and passing attack are every bit that of a Top 10 team. However, the rushing attack has struggled in the first two weeks. Myles Gaskin has rushed for just 124 yards through two games after being thought of as a fringe Heisman Trophy candidate before the season.UP NEXTIdaho: The Vandals will face a second straight Pac-12 foe in Washington State. They will make the short eight-mile trip to Martin Stadium for their first meeting in three years.Washington: The Huskies host FCS Portland State in their final test before the start of Pac-12 play.POLL IMPLICATIONSWashington will remain in the Top 10 this week after the convincing victory and is likely to stay there into the start of Pac-12 play with another non-conference warmup against FCS Portland State next week.LAST WORDThey felt like it, Petrino said about Washingtons No. 8 ranking. The hitting, hearing the hitting, defensively they definitely felt like it. Offensively, their speed is like it. So I wouldnt be surprised if theyre there at the end of the year, thats for sure.
