NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees are bringing back Larry Rothschild for his seventh season as pitching coach. Adidas Shoes Cheap China .The Yankees said Friday that Rothschild has a one-year contract for 2017. On Wednesday, general manager Brian Cashman said working out a deal with Rothschild was on his to-do list. The 62-year-old Rothschild will be entering his 43rd season in pro ball as a player, coach or manager. He pitched seven games for Detroit in 1981-82.New York set a single-season team record with 1,393 strikeouts this year. The Yankees went 84-78 and missed the playoffs. Cheap Adidas Shoes For Sale . The victory improved the Czech pairs impressive cup doubles record to 14-1. http://www.clearanceadidas.com/ . Terms of the deal were not immediately available. The 26-year-old finished last season with Clevelands Triple-A affiliate in Columbus after signing with the Indians in August. Conor McGregor has been a two-division UFC champion for less than one week -- but as usual, fans are already focused on his next fight.Exactly whom McGregor will fight is unclear. He now holds belts at featherweight and lightweight. Following UFC 205 last weekend, McGregor (21-3) said he would take time off for the birth of his first child in early 2017. He also anticipates a meeting with UFCs new ownership. The leading candidates to welcome back McGregor include interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo, lightweight contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Nate Diaz, plus welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. How tough are these individual matchups for the sports biggest star? Here are the projected betting lines for each, provided by Nick Kalikas of MMAOddsBreaker.com.Featherweight championship: Conor McGregor -205, Jose Aldo +165Kalikas: The weight cut would be brutal for McGregor at this point, now that he has bulked up for fights at 155 and 170 pounds. But if he can make the cut, it would be a rematch of a fight he finished in 13 seconds [at UFC 194 last December]. McGregors timing and counterpunching took Aldo out, ending his 10-year unbeaten streak. Aldo has all the tools, but dont underestimate the mind games McGregor played on him. McGregor closed as a +100 even money bet against Aldo in their first fight. Hell open significantly higher this time.Lightweight championship: McGregor -250, Nate Diaz +190Kalikas: McGregor was overzealous when they met in March [at UFC 196]. He head-hunted and gassed himself out. He fought with a far more measured approach in the rematch [at UFC 202 in August], working Diaz with low kicks, body shots and dropping him multiple times in the first two rounds. In both matchups, McGregor was obviously the better striker, as long as his conditioning held up. In order for Diaz to win, hed have to rely on weathering the storm again and McGregors cardio fading.. Cheap Adidas China Wholesale. Diazs big advantage is on the ground, but his attempts to get the fight there were unsuccessful in the rematch. Theres no question McGregor should be the favorite in a trilogy bout.Lightweight championship: McGregor -115, Khabib Nurmagomedov -115Kalikas: This fight would be McGregors ultimate test. Nurmagomedov is one of the best wrestlers in the UFC and would have a clear advantage on the ground. Unlike Diaz, Nurmagomedov has a very strong ability to put opponents on their back. McGregor would have to either limit his approach offensively, fearing the takedown, or go all out in an attempt to take Nurmagomedov out with strikes as quickly as possible before the takedowns come. McGregors use of range has helped his takedown defense and if he can stay upright, he should be in a great position. But if Nurmagomedov has success with his takedowns, it could be a long night for the Irishman. As a pick-em, the sports books should attract a large amount of two-way action due to both fighters having serious die-hard fan bases.Welterweight championship: McGregor +125, Tyron Woodley -155Kalikas: McGregors previous experience at welterweight was against a large lightweight in Diaz. This time, McGregor would be facing a true welterweight, someone who walks around about 20 to 30 pounds heavier than him. This fight would be similar to the Nurmagomedov matchup, considering Woodley is a very powerful wrestler who can take him down and do serious damage on the canvas. Unlike Nurmagomedov, Woodley also has insane power with his right hand, and McGregor has never been hit by someone who can pack a punch like Woodley. That being said, McGregor should hold a significant technical striking edge and would have a clear path to victory if the fight stayed standing. Crew battles have settled regional rivalries throughout Super Smash Bros. Melees history, and this weekend the northern California scene is looking to restore its good name. Michigan Smash major The Big House 6 on Oct. 7-9 will run its second annual regional crew battle tournament, featuring eight crews from the US as well as Canada and Europe.A crew battle is a competition between two teams of five players each where players take turns playing one vs. one matches. The winner of a match carries over his remaining stocks, or lives, to play the next person on the other crew. The process is repeated until a team runs out of players. The team with players remaining is deemed the winner. In recent years, NorCal has established itself as one of the strongest regions in the world, featuring players such as DaJuan Shroomed McDaniel and Zachary SFAT Cordoni along with a slew of players that routinely finish in the final brackets of majors. Despite their talent, they failed to live up to high expectations at last years crew exhibitions by losing in the first round to Canadas crew.Team NorCal started strong, gaining a three stock lead as Roustane Kage Benzeguir was the only player left for Canada. Kage needed to take a total of seven stocks, including four of Shroomeds stocks, to advance into the next round. The circumstances looked grim, but Kage stepped up to the challenge as he defeated Kyle dizzkidboogie Athaydes Ice Climbers and then proceeded to dismantle Shroomed in embarrassing fashion to steal the victory. Cheers roared as a fan proudly waved a Canadian flag in the crowd and NorCal drifted away with their heads down.A Year of RedemptionA year later, NorCal seeks redemption after that disappointing first-round exit. Fortunately, they come with a much stronger five-man lineup as Kevin PewPewU Toy and Michael Nintendude Brancato join the likes of dizzkidboogie, Shroomed, and SFAT. Although NorCal had a large pool of players to choose from, they included two Ice Climbers players to take advantage of the no stage bans rule, giving them a strong counter-pick on Final Destination. Not everyone agreees with their lineup decision, but, as SFAT explained, I feel that our core four players, PewPewU, Nintendude, Shroomed, and myself, are the strongest and Kyle has improved so much over the past year and has proven himself with his crew battle performances at Shine 2016. Adidas Originals Stan Smith Cheap. ore importantly, SFAT felt that PewPewU was the missing ingredient from last years crew. SFAT remarked, Unfortunately, PewPewU couldnt make it last year to The Big House 5, but hes our glue guy and makes sure that we are mentally positive. When I play with him in doubles, hes always the player that keeps our heads in the game. We didnt have the right mindset for last years crews and I felt that was a big reason why we lost. With a lineup that has four top-20 level players, team NorCal comes in very confident. Crews such as SoCal, Florida, and Europe also come in with stacked five-man lineups which would give any competition some pause for thought. SFAT gave his assessment: I believe that Europe looks a little weak and Im most scared of Florida, but we have the pieces to beat any team as long as we make the right decisions in our-counter picks. It will be a tall order for NorCal to defeat Florida, which has Evolution Championship Series 2016 champion Juan Hungrybox Debiedma, fellow Melee god Jason Mew2King Zimmerman and Justin Plup McGrath. SoCal is also fearsome, with god Joseph Mango Marquez along with an all-star lineup of top-20 players. Europe offers its finest in god Adam Armada Lindgren and potentially William Leffen Hjelte. Regardless, NorCals positive mindset is arguably the most important trait to have for crews as players need to adapt quickly while not succumbing to the pressure of the roaring crowds and cross-regional trash talk.Despite the competition, Shroomed believes that his region will come through. He quipped, We can win, one hundred percent, as long as SFAT and I do our parts against the other gods when we face them. We all have to pull our weight, but we can do it. PHOENIX -- Matt Kemp has had some big hits in his many trips to Chase Field in his many seasons in the NL West. Cheap Wholesale Air Max . He had another one Tuesday night.Kemps two-out, bases loaded double in the eighth inning erased a one-run Arizona lead and the Atlanta Braves beat the Diamondbacks 7-4 in the second game of a matchup of teams with the two worst records in the National League. Its a nice field, a nice backdrop, he said. You see the ball well. Ive played here a lot so Ive got some experience here.Kemp earned two RBI with the hit and a third run scored when right fielder Mitch Haniger bobbled the ball. Those are situations you want to be in, said Kemp, who also had a sacrifice fly.He said hes enjoying himself since he was acquired by Atlanta from San Diego on July 30, despite the Braves record. The guys here are good. They treat me well, he said. Were having as much fun as we can in the situation that were in.Kemps three RBI gave him 83 for the season.Hes been there, done that, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. Lamb also doubled in the eighth, breaking out of a 2-for-47 slump. Tomas left the game in the eighth with mid-back stiffness.Atlanta starter Rob Whalen held Arizona hitless through 2 2/3 innings but never made it out of the third. With two outs, he walked three batters, the last two on full counts, to load the bases for Tomas. After the two-run single, Whalen hit Welington Castillo to load them again and bring up Lamb, who laced a two-run ground-rule double into the Braves bullpen down the right field line and Arizona led 4-2.That was it for Whalen in his fifth major league start. The Braves, who scored five in the first inning in Monday nights 9-8 loss, scored two in the first Tuesday, and Arizona starter Archie Bradley was fortunate it wasnt more.Nick Markakis singled in one run and Tyler Flowers doubled in another. Jace Peterson walked to load the bases but Swanson struck out looking to end the threat.Garcia doubled to start the fourth, took third on a groundout and scored on Kemps fly out to center to slice the Diamondbacks lead to 4-3.The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the third but failed to score. In all, Atlanta stranded eight runners in the first three innings.Freddie Freeman of the Braves went 0 for 3 to snap an 11-game hitting streak.TRAINERS ROOMDiamondbacks: Manager Chip Hale said OF A.J. Sky Sports coverage of the Scottish football season reaches a climax on Scottish Cup final day. Acheter Air Max Pas Cher . Its live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 2pm on Saturday. Presenter David Tanner looks forward to the final, and also the arrival of Brendan Rodgers at Celtic... The city of Glasgow never tires of talking football. On the evidence of my strolls along Sauchiehall and Buchanan Streets this week, the volume of the chatter has reached levels not heard for years. Celtic fans told me of their excitement about Brendan Rodgers coming to town. I could only agree! Others were sad that Neil Lennon wasnt being welcomed back; I agreed with them, too. Discussions tended to move onto thoughts about whether the new boss should worry about the return of the other half of the Old Firm to the Premiership. Meanwhile, the blue half of town is all over the Scottish Cup final. As is the green end of Edinburgh! It struck me that this week might prove to be a watershed for Scottish football and for the fans in the countrys biggest city. This is the time when football people appear to me to have started looking forward with anticipation and excitement, rather than looking back in anger. The events that have unfolded at Rangers since 2012 - and the fiscal arrangements which preceded them - have dominated and soured many discussions about Scottish football for way too long. Without the Old Firm going head-to-head to provide the entertainment, fans of the great rivals have been left to argue the toss about tax schemes and other legal complexities. And youd be amazed how many tax experts there are out there now! Everybody has their own truth on this subject. The discourse of discontent can hopefully be drowned out now. Mark Warburton and Alan Stubbs will go head-to-head at Hampden Park Celtic have shown huge appetite and ambition in their pursuit and capture of Rodgers (there were so many fantastic options available to the champions this time!) and there is clearly about to be substantial investment in human resources at Parkhead. The personal intervention of Dermot Desmond in the recruitment process excites me; it sends out a strong message that wasnt there when he took a back seat when the unfathomable appointment of Ronny Deila was made two years ago. Id argue that these great Glasgow clubs exist primarily to beat the other one! Trophies and European runs are an added bonus! As a Celtic supporter, Brendan will understand this but only to a degree... as he becomes immersed in Celtic and the Old Firm, hell soon discover more about the unique culture of bedlam! Hell find Glasgow to be more intense than Liverpool. I believe that prospect will excite him! Luke Shanley tells us Brendan Rodgers is the big-name manager Celtic wanted Before Brendan experiences the Old Firm clash next season - remember, all of the meetings in the Ladbrokes Premiership will be live on Sky Sports - theres a William Hill Scottish Cup final involving Rangers and another big city club, Hibernian, to look forward to.The word from inside Hampden Park is that demand for cup final tickets outstrips even that for the colossal Old Firm semi-final! Hibs and Rangers fans are noticeably looking forward to this game more than they have any other in recent years. McCann: Stubbs tactical edge Neil McCann is backing Rangers to prolong Hibernians Scottish Cup misery this weekend... Why is there such a final frenzy? First and foremost, both sets of fans know that their favourites can win it. For much of this season, it was difficult to separate the clubs in the league - it was two home wins apiece. The years of mayhem at Rangers and, similarly, Hibernians slide into the Championship - and their extended stay there - means the cup final has additional... well... everything! Despite their Championship status, Hibs managed to reach the final of the League Cup. But that good work seemed to be unravelled by the nature of the late defeat to Ross County at Hampden, coupled with a complete collapse in the league. The form slump led to a new phrase entering the Scottish football dictionary... Hibernian will look to end a run of 10 Scottish Cup final defeats stretching back to 1902 when they play Rangers on Saturday Hibsed it (phrasal verb) - to lose a football game, usually near the end, when victory would seem like the easier option. Hibs have Hibsed it again.Dont dare say those words within earshot of Alan Stubbs. The Hibernian manager knows only too well that if his team dont Hibs it against Rangers and actually win the cup for the first time since 1902, then the phrase can be removed from the footy lexicon as quickly as it appeared there - and sports most enduring hoodoo will also have been ended. Hibernian were victorious the last time the sides met, defeating Rangers 3-2 at Easter Road Cup finals are usually decided by courage. The team that shows the most of it has a habit of winning. In recent years, though, theres been an additional influencing factor in finals.Since the introduction of the divisional play-offs by the old Scottish Football League, the three divisions below the Premiership have all completed their 36-game season some weeks before the top leagues 38-game campaign has ended. This has presented a problem for the lower-league sides: how to rest the players without letting them switch off. Sky Sports pundit Neil McCann is expecting the Scottish Cup final to be a tight match This years is the fifth final since 2006 that teams from outside the Premiership have featured. A decade ago, the then Division 2 winners Gretna lost on penalties to Hearts; since then Division One/Championship Queen of the South, Ross County and Falkirk have all tried to take the final step. All have failed, despite some having engineered some big cup shocks along the way.And that could be where Hibs have the edge in this unprecedented all-Championship final. Their season was extended beyond the end of Rangers campaign by their participation in the play-offs. The last competitive game for Stubbsy and co - one that ended in late defeat in the play-off semis against Falkirk - was just eight days before Hampden. Wallace: Time to deliver Lee Wallace will get the chance to lift his first major trophy as a Rangers player on Saturday... Rangers, on the other hand, havent played a game with anything riding on it since the Old Firm semi-final FIVE weeks ago! Mark Warburton will have had sleepless nights worrying about the after-effects of winning the title so early and the cold storage which followed it.Will Rangers be rested or ready? Will Hibs be sore or stimulated? Is momentum more powerful than inertia? Answering those questions with me in the studio will be a panel of multiple cup winners: Scotland manager (and Hibs fan!) Gordon Strachan, former Hibs and Rangers manager Alex McLeish and Skys Neil McCann, a five-time cup winner. Former Hibernian defender John Brownlie and former Rangers winger Willie Henderson look ahead to Saturdays Scottish Cup final Make sure you tune in from 2pm to enjoy the full live build-up from Hampden - well have exclusive interviews with the Rangers squad and management, Hibs and Scotland midfielder John McGinn tells us about his Hampden hopes and theres my sit-down with Alan Stubbs, a thought-provoking chat about how a cup final drugs test saved his life. So, years of adversity have given the Hibees and the Bluenoses a renewed hunger for success. Saturday May 21 will be the day the good times return - for one set of fans. Hibernian manager Alan Stubbs says his side are determined to win the Scottish Cup final against Rangers Next season, Brendan Rodgers Celtic, Aberdeen and Hearts will all invest to meet the changes in the landscape brought about by Rangers winning promotion. The fixtures for 2016/17 will be announced by the SPFL on Sky Sports News HQ on June 17, so the excitement starts early! Mark the date in your diary... Brendan certainly will!I was asked this week what my personal ambitions are and, without hesitating, I instinctively said: to be in the studio the night Scotland finally qualify for a major tournament! Scotlands World Cup qualifiers are live on Sky Sports next season. Thats something else to look forward to in what will be a outstanding season for the game here. The campaign which ends this weekend has been one in which more of the matches that mattered in Scotland have been live on Sky Sports and its been a pleasure and a privilege to cover them for you. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Seton Hall no longer has star Isaiah Whitehead to lean on.The Pirates have depth and balance though -- and that was enough for them to pass their first road test of 2016-17.Myles Powell scored 26 points off the bench, Desi Rodriguez had 25 and Seton Hall beat Iowa 91-83 on Thursday night.Khadeen Carrington added 20 points for the Pirates (3-0), who shot 51 percent from the floor with eight 3s and outscored the Hawkeyes 50-24 in the paint. Our team will be much more balanced this year, said Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard after Whitehead left for the NBA.Powell buried a 3 and followed by a layup to put Seton Hall up 82-74 with 3:15 to go -- and then drilled another long 3 to make it a 10-point game a minute later. Rodriguez followed with a 3 that sent the fans to the exits.Iowa made a few late 3s to make it close before falling for the first time in 2016-17.Senior Peter Jok had 30 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double, and freshman Tyler Cook scored a career-high 24 points for the Hawkeyes (2-1).I would have liked to have seen us play better defense over the duration, especially in the second half. We tried defenses, we changed defenses; press, we went to zone. We just didnt perform to the level thats necessary, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said.BIG PICTURESeton Hall: The Pirates should be a factor in the Big East. They started five upperclassmen who were unfazed by their first road game -- although a 9 p.m. ET tip-off time on a week night kept the crowd down a bit. Seton Hall forced Iowa to commit 17 turnovers.Iowa: Win or lose, a matchup against a tough, veteran team halfway through November was exactly what the Hawkeyes needed. Air Max Pas Cher. McCaffery is still trying to find a rotation that can win in the Big Ten, using 11 players in the first half alone. But it looks like Jok has found a more than capable sidekick in Cook, who can seemingly do everything but knock down free throws.NOT-SO FREE THROWSCook was a mess at the free-throw line, going just 5 of 12. But neither team could covert its freebies, as Seton Hall was 17 of 31 and Iowa was 19 of 32.SMOKE SHOWIowa brought out two sets of pyrotechnics during its player introductions. The smoke lingered in the air for roughly half of the first half. But Iowas other new wrinkles, including a new court, lighting and a massive new scoreboard over center court, has vastly improved the game-day experience at Carver-Hawkeye Arena -- which had begun to show its age until recent renovations.HE SAID ITTheres not a time where he shoots the ball where I think its not going in. He plays with a lot of confidence. He plays like I think all kids should play, just having fun, Willard said of Powell.UP NEXTSeton Halls schedule doesnt let up much. To the surprise of many, it isnt the Wolverines but their in-state rivals the Michigan State Spartans. LOS ANGELES -- Former football star Tim Tebow held a tryout for Major League Baseball teams Tuesday in Los Angeles, showing off a powerful bat and a few areas of needed improvement, as scouts and media diligently chronicled his efforts to make a bold foray into a new sport at age 29.Tebow got mixed reviews after a workout that lasted more than two hours before an audience of 28 MLB teams at Rod Dedeaux Field on the campus of the University of Southern California. Only the Chicago Cubs and the Oakland Athletics didnt attend.Tebows heavily muscled, 255-pound physique and 6.70-ish time in the 60-yard dash were impressive to the scouts. He also showed undeniable hitting ability with a series of line drives and long homers during batting practice. But Tebow also showed he still needs baseball seasoning when he faced live pitching from former big leaguers David Aardsma and Chad Smith, who repeatedly fooled him with off-speed pitches. Tebow could only grin in frustration after he fanned on a series of changeups and breaking balls. There is 100 percent nerves, no question about it, Tebow said. When youre at the combine or a pro day, you have your body of work for four years, everything that you did, so its not just that one day. Here, you might have seen me when I was 17, but you havent seen me since. A lot goes into it, so youd better show something. A lot of nerves, a lot of pressure, for sure.Tebow, who is attempting to rekindle a baseball career that ended when he was a high school junior in suburban Jacksonville, Florida, in 2005, told reporters that hes determined to pursue baseball as hard as he can and hes not afraid of failing. This isnt about publicity, Tebow said. Its definitely not about money. I took a pay cut to do this. For me, you pursue what you love regardless of what else happens. If you fail or fall flat on your face, and thats the worst thing that can happen, its OK. When did pursuing what you love become such a bad thing? Ill make all the sacrifices to be the best I can.Aardsma, who pitched to Tebow in a private workout last week, said Tuesdays performance wasnt Tebows best.Today was the worst Ive seen him, Aardsma said to the Los Angeeles Times. Cheap Nike NBA Jerseys. It looked like he was trying really hard, overswinging a bit. Its what you do when youve got 200 people and cameras everywhere and youre the only guy theyre watching.?According to one scout, Tebow showed a below-average 40 grade arm on the 20-80 scouts scale. Tebow caught everything hit to him during shagging, but struggled with his footwork a couple of times.A few big league teams talked privately with Tebow after the workout, and he seems unlikely to have trouble finding an organization willing to give a chance to a celebrity with clear baseball ability, however rudimentary.Tebow realizes he is still far from the big leagues, but he hopes to play in the instructional league in Arizona next month before heading into winter league ball, perhaps even in Latin America.Tebows pursuit of a baseball career has elicited strong reactions pro and con. Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter and outfielder Adam Jones are among those whove made comments or social media posts either poking fun at or disparaging his attempts to play baseball after an 11-year absence from the sport.Conversely, Aardsma and former big league slugger Gary Sheffield have pronounced themselves pleasantly surprised by Tebows progress as a hitter.Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who teamed with Tebow to bring Florida national football titles in 2006 and 2008, called Tebow an incredible high school baseball player whose quest to play the sport professionally should be taken seriously.Im very biased, and everybody knows that, but dont count him out, Meyer told ESPN.com Monday.Tebow has been working out since late May with former big league catcher Chad Moeller, who runs a baseball school in Scottsdale, Arizona. Moeller said he has spent about 80 hours with Tebow working on hitting and fielding and talking baseball over the past three months. From what Ive seen and have continued to see, people will be surprised, Moeller said before the workout. Theyll be more than surprised.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.? The club released the colorful Valverde from his contract with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, ending a stay that included several highs and lows. "We tried and he tried and it just didnt work," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Ill always have great memories of him. He did a terrific job for this organization. He was a terrific closer and a terrific teammate." The peak of Valverdes time in Detroit came in 2011 when he was 49 for 49 in save chances. He saved 35 games last season, but faltered in the playoffs and became a free agent. He didnt sign with another team and Detroit eventually brought him back on a minor league deal, calling him up to the majors in late April. Valverde went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA, converting nine saves in 12 chances, but it never seemed easy and he was designateed for assignment on June 21. Cheap Nike Air Max 90 Free Shipping. He got a save in the division series against Oakland, but allowed three runs in 1 2-3 innings in two appearances. Valverde gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning in his only appearance in the ALCS against New York, forcing Leyland to remove him from the closers role. ANAHEIM, Calif. Wholesale Jersys From China . -- Veteran Antoine Vermette is managing to look every bit as fresh as his 21-year-old linemates.Vermette and Corey Perry each had a goal and an assist, and the Anaheim Ducks scored a season-high three power play goals to beat the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.Joseph Cramarossa, Sami Vatanen and Vermettes linemate Nick Ritchie also scored for the Ducks, and John Gibson made 21 saves.Hes a dominant center iceman with the puck and thats a huge advantage, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said of Vermette, his third-line center. And we like to play into that.Ryan Dzingel scored for the Senators, who lost their second straight game in Southern California. Mike Condon made 10 saves before being removed for Andrew Hammond in the second period. Hammond made 16 saves.Trying to get something and give Hammond some ice time, too, Senators coach Guy Boucher said. We had Condon starting the game, we wanted to see what it would look like to get him in on a back-to-back. If our players were in the game and were playing very good, with the same score I probably would have done something different. But I saw right away that our guys just werent in this game.Boucher lamented the teams lack of effort the day after a 4-1 loss in Los Angeles. It was a no-show all around. Not good, Boucher said. We wanted to rebound from yesterday. We played a hard game yesterday and it didnt turn out our way but we didnt give much to the opponent and played a physical game. Today, we didnt play a physical game at all.The 34-year-old Vermette facilitated Ritchies goal with a beautiful backhand pass into the slot at 10:29 in the second period, giving the Ducks a 4-1 lead -- 21-year-old linemate Ondrej Kase also assisted on the tally.Vermette capitalized on the power play with 47 seconds left in the first period to make it 3-1.Nothing too special, Vermette said. We want to create some shooting lanes with good positioning, we have our setup and good players on the team. Its a matter of executing and eventually the puck goes in. Tonight was one of those nights.Vatanen closed the scoring with a power-play goal off the crossbar at 7:59 in the third period.Perry scored his first power-play goal of the season at 12:05 in the first to break a 1-1 tie. Perry has scored twice in the last three games after going 18 games without a goal.Dzingel scored at 7:53 in the first when he finished off a feed from the corner boards by Bobby Ryan, momentarily tying the game at 1-1.Cramarossa scored on a rebound 2:58 into play to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.We wanted to have a strong first period, give ourselves a chance with a good strong start, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. Get our skating game going, get our forechecking game going. Then we can build on it the rest of the game. The Ducks have won three in a row at Honda Center. We had a pretty strong homestand up until this point, and we wanted to win another one before hitting the road, Ritchie said. PITTSBURGH -- When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Sean Davis in the second round last spring, defensive coordinator Keith Butler reveled in the possibilities. Here was a 6-foot-1, 202-pound guy who could play both safety and cornerback depending on the situation, someone with the size and the speed to keep up with -- if not totally neutralize -- players like New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.Davis may very well develop into such a player, but hes not there yet.You would like to think we could put him on Gronk and say we got him, Butler said. I dont think anybody can do that.Particularly on the NFLs 30th-ranked pass defense, one that faces Gronkowski, Tom Brady and the rest of the NFLs most diverse offenses on Sunday when the Patriots (5-1) visit Heinz Field. Bradys lit up the Steelers for 24 touchdowns against just three interceptions in 10 career meetings with the Steelers (4-2), most of them against variations of the Steel Curtain that were far more imposing than the current iteration, one rife with inexperience, particularly in the secondary. The growing pains have been evident. Davis has seen his playing time fluctuate and didnt play one defensive snap in last weeks one-sided 30-15 loss to Miami . He may not get back in the lineup this weekend either. Cornerback Artie Burns, a first-round pick, is improving but still very much a work in progress. Special teams ace Rob Golden is in his first year as a starting safety and his main backup is Jordan Dangerfield, a former practice squad player.Throw in linebacker Ryan Shazier -- like Gronkowski a physical marvel -- and the balky knee thats kept him out of the lineup for a month plus a pass rush thats been more rumor than fact in Pittsburghs two losses (zero sacks) and the prospect of facing a dominant Brady seems like a mismatch. We need to play more than one defense against these guys, Butler said. Theyre very good. They can pick you apart if they can figure out what youre doing. Its finding the right looks to throw at Brady -- who has pretty much seen everything -- and the right people to put in the right places thats the problem. Then theres the issue of youthful exuberance. With so many fresh faces, the lure to try and go above and beyond while facing the NFLs top tight end and a Hall of Fame quarterback is only too real. Its tough sometimes, Shazier saaid. NCAA Basketball Jerseys China. Guys want to make plays. Youre playing against one of the best guys and you want to see how you relate and everything like that.Shazier sees it happen regularly to opposing defenses trying to figure out what to do with Steelers All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown.Guys come up with a game plan to stop AB and when youre not sound enough, he destroys you, Shazier said. Its the same with Gronkowski, who set a career high with 162 yards receiving last Sunday against Cincinnati. Having Shazier back may help. And the Steelers are at least a little bit bigger -- if not necessarily better -- than the group that allowed Brady and Gronkowski to hook up for three scores in New Englands 28-21 victory in the 2015 opener. Burns is 6-feet tall, as are cornerbacks Ross Cockrell and Justin Gilbert. While thats still considerably smaller than the 6-6, 265-pound Gronkowski or the 6-7, 248-pound Martellus Bennett, its a start.I think it goes back to being disruptive, said Cockrell, whos had moderate success this season against bigger receivers like Cincinnatis A.J. Green and Brandon Marshall of the New York Jets. Were going to be able to put our hands on some of these guys and disrupt them and disrupt their timing.Davis is hopeful to get in on the act. He understands why hes not atop the depth chart. On a team with lesser ambitions, maybe hed get to play through the mistakes. Not so on the AFC North leaders.I cant complain or mope, Davis said. Ive got to handle my (role). One that will continue its evolution on Sunday in a game that will be as much about mental and physical discipline as it is simple talent. If you abandon your job and help somebody out or try to be selfish and make a play when you really shouldnt, theyre going to capitalize on it, he said. DEL MAR, Calif. Adidas Ultra Boost Discount . -- There was a gamble involved in starting Avenge in Sundays $202,070 John Mabee Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar. Trainer Richard Mandella had no idea whether she could handle the race distance of 1-1/8 miles on turf.I thought the mile and an eighth would be too far and I said, I wont know until I try it, he said.Ridden by Flavien Prat, Avenge was within a length of the lead throughout the Grade 2 Mabee. She took the lead in early stretch and held off Finest City to win by a head in an exciting finish. Elektrum finished third.Avenge ($17.60) was timed in 1:48.82. She led by two lengths with a furlong remaining.Prat said a patient approach was vital. The race came up just the way Id hoped, he said. We were in a good spot and she was going easy. The result did little to clarify the crowded older filly and mare turf division in Southern California. Fresh Feline and Nancy from Nairobi, who were second and third in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap at 1-1/16 miles on turf here in July, finished 12th and 11th in the 12-runner Mabee.Shes Not Here, the winner of the Yellow Ribbon, was not entered in the Mabee. Illuminant, winner of the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita in May, is currently sidelined and not expected back until 2017.Sobradora Inc, the winner of the restricted Osunitas Stakes on Aug. 7, finished fifth in a dead heat with Havanna Belle. Sobradora Inc was the 2-1 favorite. The Mabee was the first loss in the sixth start for Sobradora Inc, a two-time Group 1 winner in Argentina last year.Avenge races for Ramona Bass. A 4-year-old filly by War Front, Avenge led throughout an optional claimer at a mile on turf on July 24, a result that led to the decision to run in Sundays race.Shes improving, Mandella said. We tried her in the mile and we were happy with the result. The Mabee was the longest race of Avenges 11-race career and her third race around two turns. She won the minor Ultrafleet Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita in May 2015.Avenge has won 5 of 11 starts and earned $291,996. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- After returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and being swept in the opening round by the eventual champions, the Detroit Pistons have a pretty obvious challenge ahead. This young team has the potential for more growth in Stan Van Gundys third season as coach and could certainly advance further in the postseason if things break right. But the Pistons should take nothing for granted. Its a new year, and we have to go through the process. You cant skip steps, Van Gundy said. We made the point to guys -- this isnt a continuation of last year, we dont start at 44 wins and the eighth seed in the playoffs and try to climb. You start at zero wins and no guarantee of anything.Detroits 44-38 mark last season was good enough for a long-awaited postseason berth, and a four-game loss to Cleveland wasnt too much of a downer after everything the Pistons had accomplished. With Andre Drummond back and signed to a long-term contract, Detroit has a solid nucleus to build around, but the next step wont necessarily be easy. The Pistons return their starting five of Drummond, guards Reggie Jackson and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and forwards Tobias Harris and Marcus Morris. They expect to be without Jackson for a while at the beginning of the season because of knee and thumb problems. While the Pistons have a long way to go before standing toe to toe with Cleveland atop the East, there appears to be enough parity among the conferences other playoff-caliber teams that a move up the standings is plausible for Detroit. Here are a few more things to watch with the Pistons this season:DRUMMONDS FREE THROWSDrummond has made 38 percent of his free throws for his career, a figure thats caused Van Gundy to take his star big man out of games at crucial momentts. Cheap Authentic Ultra Boost. Drummond has used virtual reality in an effort to improve at the line, but it remains to be seen if his offseason work will pay off.JACKSONS INJURIESJackson averaged 18.8 points and 6.2 assists last season, forming an impressive point guard-center tandem with Drummond. The Pistons announced Oct. 10 that he would miss six to eight weeks after receiving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. If Jackson is able to come back on that timetable, hed still have a chance to contribute plenty this season, but the Pistons want to make sure they dont fall too far behind while hes out.NEW ADDITIONSDetroit signed guard Ish Smith in the offseason, and his role figures to increase while Jackson is out. The Pistons also brought in forward Jon Leuer and drafted 6-foot-11 forward Henry Ellenson out of Marquette in the first round.NEXT STAR?Stanley Johnson averaged 8.1 points a game as a rookie, and at age 20 has the potential for a big leap this season and next. His athleticism on the wing could become a real asset if he develops into a more consistent player at both ends.QUESTIONSVan Gundy said recently the backcourt rotation was still an issue entering the season. Darrun Hilliard showed poise when called upon last season in limited duty, and 6-foot-7 rookie Michael Gbinije could add versatility if he proves hes ready to play at the NBA level. Those two spots Im not totally clear on right now going into the season, Van Gundy said. I know what were doing at center, I know what were doing at the three and the four primarily. The Lions (0-1) started poorly against the Stampeders in their opening round clash in Calgary on Friday, and although they managed to outscore the hosts in the second half, they still lost 44-32. It was a frustrating game for Elimimian (ankle) to watch, and he admitted after Mondays practice that one point he "was about to throw a couple of chairs." "It was definitely tough," he said, before adding he was "expecting" to play in that game. "But that was last week and we have 17 more regular-season games to go." And that starts with a home date with the Argonauts (1-0), who fought back to overcome Hamilton 39-34 last week on the back of solid contributions from running back Chad Kackert (10 rushes for 112 yards and a touchdown) and wide receiver/kick returner Chad Owens. Elimimian is looking forward to the challenge of stopping that pair, along with QB Ricky Ray, who went 24-34 for 368 yards and four touchdowns against the Ti-Cats. "They have a great offence and a great offensive game," the 26-year-old said. "I just think the big thing for us is just doing what we do, and thats run to the ball and be physical and if we do that well be fine." Lions head coach Mike Benevides was looking forward to having Elimimian back at his disposal on defence as his team looks to avoid falling into a 0-2 hole. "The biggest thing that Solly brings to us is obviously that downhill mentality to defend the run," he said. "It gives us a little bit of synergy that we had in training camp and it just gives us another run stopper thats comfortable with `Biggie (LB Adam Bighill)." Besides Elimimian, the Lions should also be boosted by the return of 43-year-old McCallum, after Benevides watched his punter go through the motions Monday. "Paul did all the place kicking, he felt good, he did some punting and really showed some power," Benevides said. "So its gonna be on him because hes a pro and hes been around a long time. But I really liked what I saw from his place kicking. "He tells me he feels good, so Im gonna make sure that he is entirely confident that hes not feeling (the groin injury) anymore and well take a hard look at him." The news wasnt as promising for Lions star centre Angus Reid (lower back), with Benevides saying he will still be evaluated on a weekly basis. Cheap Authentic Ultra Boost. . "Obviously, hes getting better all the time," the coach said of the 36-year-old. "The thing with him is its gonna be a week-to-week thing and for him its about loading it, meaning hes in the weight room doing squats, hes practising and then the true tell-tale will be how sore he is the next day or two days after." With the 13-year pro still sidelined, snapping duties will once again fall to second-year player Matt Norman, who is being groomed as Reids eventual replacement on the offensive line. The 25-year-old former guard struggled with the count in the loss to Calgary but said he had already put it behind him. "Ive looked at film, made some corrections and now Im focusing on Toronto," he said. Norman doesnt see Torontos visit as a tool for motivation, adding he maintains "the same level of intensity each week". "I dont go up or down depending on who were playing," he said. "I keep the same level of motivation and confidence for each game, to me its just another game." Despite his issues at centre, Norman had the full support of Lions QB Travis Lulay and Benevides as he makes the difficult transition. "Those types of things happen, they do happen, and Matt doesnt like it when they happen and its tough," said Lulay, who completed 21 of 36 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown against the Stampeders. "But its part of the process, you have to make mistakes to find out what you need to be better at so thats something hes obviously very conscious of. But Matts a pro, hell get those things ironed out and well get better there." Benevides said Normans errors were more glaring than others because of his job hiking the ball to Lulay on each possession. "You just have to grow with that a little bit, (but) when you look at the totality of the game, he played fine," he said. "Week to week hes gonna get better and you have to also give him a chance to go through some of these learning curves." NOTES: DE Julius Williams could make his first appearance in a Lions jersey on Thursday. Said Benevides: "He got some work on the weekend and were gonna take a hard look at that because if Julius can get in hell help us and that will give us a different type of rotation and a different type of player on the edge."aThe Lions added import LB Yaser Elqutub to their practice roster Monday. Gary Neville previews Manchester Uniteds clash with Arsenal on Saturday, running the rule over Wayne Rooney, Jose Mourinho and more. Wholesale Stitched Football Jerseys . United claimed their first league win in four games before the international break, but sit a disappointing sixth in the Premier League going into Saturdays clash. Man Utd vs Arsenal November 19, 2016, 11:30am Live on Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass They are six points behind Arsenal, who are just two off leaders Liverpool, and Arsene Wengers men are unbeaten since the opening day of the season. Neville, who was heavily involved in the most fierce United v Arsenal clashes throughout the 1990s and 2000s, says the Premier League is back to a higher level, Jose Mourinho should be given plenty of time, and it is nowhere near the end for Wayne Rooney. Clashes between United and Arsenal have always been entertaining You can watch Manchester United v Arsenal live on Sky Sports 1 from 11.30am on Saturday. If Jose was happy, Id be disappointedPeople say Jose Mourinho is not so happy at the moment, and to be honest with you I would be disappointed if he was happy, with some of the performances he has seen. I think what he will be most concerned about at the moment is the inconsistency, the fact his teams performances fluctuate from being really good to being so bad.Thats the worst thing for a manager or a player - inconsistency. You want to trust your players so they can produce a high level of performance week in, week out. That doesnt mean to say you have to always be at your best, but to get a very good minimum standard. Neville says Mourinho will be disappointed with Manchester United’s inconsistency at present Actually, at the moment, you can go from a really good performance in a certain match, to a performance the week after that just drops to a standard. At the moment, he is right not to be happy, because hes seen different levels of consistency from the players, and the players who have won titles before will understand you cant drop to those levels. Youre never winning a title if youre inconsistent, and thats what hell be disappointed with. Six months half price Upgrade to Sky Sports to watch Man Utd v Arsenal on Saturday and get the first six months half price It was never going to last foreverOf course, the psychology has changed since Fergie left, the players who have been there for a while, they had one voice, they knew who was in control. Theyve now had three managers in three, four years. You know that change in direction, style of play, how each manager works, getting used to that. Its the same in any workplace. If you had three different bosses in your company in three years, you wouldnt know whether you were coming or going, and thats the same out there. Its important that the club can stick by Jose for three years, let him do the work. Its going to be tough, you can see that at the moment. Highlights: Swansea 1-3 Manchester Utd The other clubs are spending big money, have their house in order, good teams as well. And Manchester United are not going to have it all their own way unfortunately. It was great watching the club win titles and being part of that all the time, but the reality of it is that it was never going to go on forever, this period was always going to come, but theyre going to have to fight through the difficult times, and do it in the right way if you like, and that means stability with the management team.Let Jose do his jobI think were judging Jose Mourinho on a moment. You hear ridiculous things like: Has he lost his magic? He won the league 18 months ago, hes one of the most successful managers of all time and hes only young in management terms. If Manchester United go and win the next four matches, Mourinho will be a genius again, theyll say, and were very quick these days to shoot managers, coaches, players down, particularly those who have built up enough credit to prove it over a long period of time. Mourinho and Wenger face off again on Saturday Ultimately, let him do his job, let him deliver. Theres nothing to suggest hes not going to deliver here yet, in my mind. Theres evidence to suggest its going to be tough, tougher than he thought.Premier League back to a higher levelI think there have been some brilliant games this season; theyve been competitive and ferocious. I think this season, with the introduction of new managers, there seems to be a higher standard, and I can see the Premier League getting back to a higher level in this first three months of this season.I hope this Manchester United v Arsenal game on Saturday is a real game. A proper game, where there is that real competitive edge, with both teams going for it with great football. I also want to see great organisation, with not a lot being given away. Highlights: Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham The 8-2 games, or the 5-0, 6-0 games, in some ways theyre not that good a game, because what you really want is for it to be a massive struggle between the top teams, and thats what Id hope on SaturdayIts not the end for RooneyAt the moment, the way Rooney fits into the jigsaw is that he plays some games and doesnt play others. Hes arrived at that period in his career where ultimately, thats how its going to be for him.But thats not a criticism, thats just a happening. Thats what happens to all players as they get into their 30s, they dont play every single week Wednesday-Saturday, Wednesday-Saturday. Neville says Rooney is going through what a lot of players have experienced His performances havent been up to his level for the past eight to 12 months. Mourinho has left him out in the past months, hes put other players in, and its for Wayne Rooney to fight his way back into the team. But its not the end of Wayne Rooney, I just believe hes entering into a different phase of his career where hes not going to play every week, and his contributions are going to be different than they were previously. Why are we surprised? Its happened to Gerrard, Terry, Giggs, Scholes, Lampard. Historically, over the years, why are we surprised all of a sudden that another great Premier League player gets into his 30s and this happens. Why are we surprised by it? We shouldnt be. Neville says there seems to be a higher standard in the Premier League this season Its a personal choice that United players have had to decide previously; are they happy with those 25-30 games a season, or do they want to get out and play every week?Thats something Wayne Rooney has to decide over the next six, 12 months or whatever that will be. Its not a choice Manchester United can make, as long as he has a contract. Its his choice. But youve got to remember, hes only been out of the team for four weeks. Hell still be in the mindset of fighting to get back into the team and playing every game.Carrick makes things tickCarrick is almost never going to be star of the show, but I always get the feeling that when Michael is in the team, the team play better. That was the feeling when I was there, and since Ive left. Michael Carrick has performed well in recent weeks He has the habit of bringing the best out of other players. Thats through the control he brings, the composure, the experience, the defensive and positional play that some people dont always spot because its not a sliding tackle or aggressive header. You wont find many people that have a bad word to say about him, hes a fantastic player, and the big thing is he makes the team tick a lot better.Id be surprised if we didnt see him play on Saturday. Weve had an international break where he isnt involved, hes had the time for preparation, and could be important for United on Saturday.Upgrade to Sky Sports now to watch Man Utd v Arsenal this Saturday and get the first six months half price! Ellis hit two-run homers and the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-0 Saturday night. It was the top of the fourth inning. The Seattle Mariners led the Los Angeles Angels 2-1. The Halos were fighting for a playoff spot and Jesus Montero was at the plate. The pitch count was 2-2 when he launched a ball deep to center that looked like a no-doubter off the bat.But Mike Trout, the 2014 American League MVP, thought he still might have a chance. As soon as he hit it, I thought it was gone. Seeing it, he did hit it high. I knew he barreled it. I just told myself get to the wall, see if it was going over by a lot, Trout told ESPN.com recently, recalling the play. The only chance I had was to tell myself to climb and it was, as a kid, one of those things you wanted to do -- climb the wall and take a home run. It was just like a perfect opportunity to go up there, and when I climbed the wall, just have a chance to reach up.According to MLBs Statcast, his first step was made in 0.56 seconds. He ramped up to a maximum speed of 17.4 mph. He covered 88.4 feet while the ball was airborne, with a route efficiency rating of 97.7 percent. When he reached the wall, he angled his cleats into the green padding and hoisted his left knee into the air, outstretching his left arm to snag the ball at the 396-feet marker with virtually his whole torso elevated above the wall.Since his MLB debut on July 8, 2011, Trout has nine home run robberies, the most of any major league player, according to research from ESPN Stats and Information. But the one against Montero stands out because of the level of precision it required. He seemed to have done everything perfectly, which was essential. Even if he had gauged the balls trajectory and timed everything correctly, there remained plenty of margin for error. Its something where you climb the wall, and if youre not in the right spot, youre a foot to the right or to the left, but everything was perfect. I got up to it, reached as far as I can and caught it.Trout came down with the ball, sending the crowd into aan absolute frenzy and prompting in-game announcers to proclaim: That might be one of the most amazing plays you ever see at a baseball game! while chuckling in giddy excitement. Cheap College Stitched Jerseys. Trout, for the most part, was pretty subdued. He tried to suppress a smile, chomping exaggeratedly on his gum. He allowed himself to let out one brief exclamation and pointed to a teammate. Still, it was obvious he was amped. It was pretty insane. It was just one of them ones where youre just like Wow. Obviously one of the best catches I ever made, Trout said. We messed around with it in [batting practice], but in the game, we never really have the situation where Ive had the opportunity. It was just one of those moments that happened in the game, a big moment and it saved the three runs. For as memorable as it was for Trout, it was just as much so for Montero, though the play surely evoked an entirely different set of feelings. He was good-natured about it, though, and gave Trout credit where credit was due.He came up to me the next time we played em, and we were joking around with it, Montero said. Like I said, everything was perfect, getting back to the wall, jumping up, climbing up, positioning and obviously the ball was catchable.Trout has given consideration to which he prefers: hitting a home run himself, which he has done plenty of times, or robbing someone else of a surefire home run, as he did with Montero last season. It depends on the situation, he said. Obviously, people ask me: What would you rather do, hit a home run or rob someone of a home run? But I think a walkoff home run is a lot more special. Yeah, your teammates at home plate celebrating waiting for you, pretty special.Though this particular play still qualifies, too.It was a special moment for me in my career, Trout said. Everything worked out perfect. For as long as he can remember, Carson Wentz has hated idleness. Landry Shamet Jersey . Sitting still, without a plan or a purpose, feels like torture. He has trouble relaxing and gets anxious when the structure of his day breaks down. An island vacation, without a watch on his wrist or schedule to stick to, would make him miserable. In recent years, however, hunting has evolved into the one exception, the lone antidote to his restlessness. It wasnt always that way. Wentz hated hunting as a kid, a quirk that made him a bit of an oddity growing up in Bismarck, North Dakota. The first few times his father dragged him to a pond or an empty field outside the city to go duck hunting, the misery couldnt end soon enough. But gradually, over time, he realized it was the one place where his brain would slow down. To crouch down in the mud and the straw with a gun in his hand, just listening for a bird to emerge, became a spiritual experience. It was an escape from football and the pressures of his budding fame. He liked it so much, he vowed to continue hunting whenever possible when he was drafted by the Eagles. Thats how he found himself with a 12-gauge shotgun by his side, lying down in a goose blind in the middle of a New Jersey cornfield in late August, on the day everything about his 2016 and his life changed.Up to that point, Wentzs rookie year with the Eagles was off to an uneventful start. Hed been told, more or less, to view it like a redshirt season. The team -- initially concerned about the steep learning curve he faced in coming to the NFL from North Dakota State --?hinted that he might sit the entire season, a third-stringer behind Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel. Wentz had played in Philadelphias first preseason game but then missed the next two with a rib injury. The idea he might suddenly be looked upon as the savior was such an unlikely possibility the day after the Eagles fourth preseason game that Wentz spent all morning and some of the afternoon with his father, brother and a few friends hunting geese. It was the first time Id gotten out all year, Wentz said. I was loving the fact that I was out in the middle of nowhere again, taking me back to how I like to relax. It was a slow day. Theyd bagged only one goose, and even then, it was difficult to discern who could even lay claim to the kill. We all shot at it, Wentz said. But Im pretty sure Im the one who hit him. In a quiet moment, Wentz checked his phone, which had been on silent for several hours. There was a text message from Eagles coach Doug Pederson. The team had just traded Bradford to the Vikings. They were expecting Wentz to take over as the starter. When he saw this, would he mind giving his head coach a call?I was just shocked, Wentz said. I dont think there was single player on the team who was thinking that might be possible. I had a mix of emotions. It was funny to find out while lying in the middle of a cornfield. Not many people would understand how perfect that is for me.What the Eagles were asking of Wentz, in that moment, seemed like a Herculean task. A rookie quarterback, one whod barely played in the preseason, taking over a veteran team with playoff aspirations, and the season was starting in nine days? He didnt even have veterans at the skill positions to lean on. His top wide receivers, Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor, only had three previous seasons of experience combined. Would anyone respect him? Would the locker room revolt? It looked like the perfect recipe for an enormous mess.Yet what the Eagles understood, perhaps even better than their confident rookie quarterback, was that Wentz was ready, and not just as a player. Theyd been watching closely. Intuitively, at times without even realizing it, Wentz had been planting the seeds for his successful ascension almost from the moment he arrived. Its arguably the NFLs greatest conundrum: In the search to find the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, you first have to rule out the next Ryan Leaf or Johnny Manziel, a bad locker room fit who might sabotage his career --?and the franchise with it -- before it even begins to bloom. A rookie quarterback thrust into action doesnt have the hardest job in the NFL; he might have the hardest job in all of sports. The reasons are both complicated and simple: The physical and mental bar you have to clear to be successful is gargantuan, and if you can clear it, youll likely survive. But if you want to thrive, there are other pitfalls -- egos, locker room hierarchy, culture clashes, wealth resentment -- that are specific to quarterbacks in ways that arent true of other players. Those pitfalls are often just as tricky to navigate.I think its a culmination of being humble and understanding there are guys in your locker room who have been in the league for a long time, so dont act like you know everything, Eagles center Jason Kelce said. At the same time, you also want to exude confidence so the guys understand they cant pick on you, that youre a strong individual. Combining those two isnt the easiest thing.Even quarterbacks with the best intentions can find themselves making unexpected mistakes. When the Los Angeles Rams showed up for training camp this year and found that the college dorms the players were staying in didnt have air conditioning, rookie quarterback Jared Goff (the No. 1 overall pick, ahead of Wentz at No. 2) thought he was making a good first impression by buying electric fans for his teammates. The problem? He bought them only for the offense. Head coach Jeff Fishers exasperation, captured by HBOs Hard Knocks documentary crew, illustrated the tightrope a rookie quarterback has to walk. So the offense has fans and the defense doesnt? Fisher sarcastically scoffed in a staff meeting. Thats a great way to start off the year. One of Wentzs strengths, in contrast to Goff, is his self-awareness. He understood, even early on, that one false step might alienate a teammate, a potential ally. He knew he was coming into a locker room where Bradford was popular and that Bradford wasnt thrilled by the Eagles decision to draft him. When you come in as the second overall pick, the last thing you want is for guys to think you believe youve made it, Wentz said. Because thats the farthest thing from the truth. I realize this is the beginning. I just tried to keep my head down and shut up. In huddles with the third-string offense, he barked out the plays and beamed with confidence, but around the veterans, he was quiet. He was really soft-spoken, Eagles tight end?Trey Burton said. You could tell he was from a small town in a small state. His first few weeks of training camp, no one knew much about him.In practice, Wentz would sling the ball into tight spots with fearlessness and authority, make throws Bradford and Daniel wouldnt even try, and then hed flutter passes that made him look mortal. The Eagles tweaked his mechanics. They made him square his shoulders and taught him to hold the ball higher, and his consistency improved. One day he spun out of the pocket, reversed direction, rolled to his left and uncorked a laser toward the sideline. The Eagles veterans began whispering to one another: Damn, this kid has some juice!?But even after his best plays, he seemed subdued. Muted, almost.Subtle signs of his attitude and work ethic, though, began to emerge. Malcolm Jenkins, arguably the most important veteran in the Eagles locker room, prides himself on being the last man out of the building every Friday. Most players are done by 1 p.m., freed from the grind for a few fleeting hours, but Jenkins has made a habit of using that time to get in extra lifting, a cold tub, a massage and additional film study. One Friday, Jenkins came back from a massage and there was Wentz, five hours after everyone else had gone home, sitting at his locker and studying film.Hey, man, go home! Wentz teased.Nah, man, you go home, Jenkins joked in return. It was a small moment that stuck with Jenkins. This kid gets it, the cornerback told teammates. He understands the value of routine, of fussing over the details long after the building has gone quiet. The tattoos were hard to miss. Although his locker was not close to Wentzs, Burton noticed them early: a large blue cross tattooed between his shoulder blades and, above them, a reference to Bible verse Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. They had little in common -- one of them white, the other black; one from Florida, the other North Dakota --?but Burton approached Wentz anyway. Would he like to come to Bible study with Burton and several other Eagles? Would he be interested in having daily conversations about his Christian faith? Wentz was touched and relieved. One of his biggest worries about joining an NFL team was whether hed have other God-fearing men around me. Hed heard stories about how different one NFL locker room could be from the next.I know he was worried, Burton said. You hear all the stories about the craziness that goes on in some locker rooms. We dont have anything in common except our faith, but thats what brought us together. I could tell he was kind of trying to find himself, to figure out who likes him for who he is and not for what he can do on the field. Once he figured out you were someone he could trust, he was a really good guy to hang with.Burton, Matthews and safety Chris Maragos invited Wentz to their church, Connect Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, confident it might make him feel more at home. Their pastor, Kyle Horner, is a former college quarterback, and they guessed correctly that he and Wentz would hit it off. As the weeks passed and Wentz began to confide in his teammates, they sensed the weight being lifted from his shoulders. He has a million people who are tugging and pulling and want his attention, Maragos said. There are not really safe places anymore. I just wanted to give him a guy he could talk to and be real with. And we could keep growing together.Matthews had been studying Wentz since he showed up for rookie camp. When I watch rookies, Im just trying to see if theyre fearless, Matthews said. In the first practice, if you go out and youre nervous, if youre stiff, if youre worried about what the coaches think, whats going to happen in the first game? The first game against a good team? How are you going to do against immense pressure? Well, the first minicamp, Carson was dicing it up. He was throwing dimes, zipping it across the field, throwing passes we hadnt even tried before he got there. Im like, This guy is not worried about what anyone is thinking. Hes playing to his own standard.Matthews decided late in the preseason that he wanted to understand Wentz as much as possible. He asked him who his favorite recording artist was, and when Wentz said he liked Jason Aldean, Matthews listened to The Dirt Road Anthem and then asked Wentz, in return, if hed listen to Kanye Wests Graduation. Matthews also determined that they needed their own celebratory handshake. It had to be something that suited each of their personalities, and it had to be clever. After mulling it over, a light bulb went on: Theyd run at each other like they were about to perform a flying chest bump, then pause at the last second and pretend to adjust their ties before shaking hands. It fit both of our demeanors, Matthews said. We like to go out there and have fun, but at the same time, were all business. It took a few awkward rehearsals to get it down. Neither of them knew, at the time, just how close they were to debuting it in front of the country. If you play in the NFL long enough, nothing surprises you. Players who seem invincible one minute can see their careers end the next. The most popular player in the locker room, a guy who has spent a decade seemingly embodying the teams ethos, can be cast aside without ceremony or sentiment. You learn, as an NFL player, to crave stability while staying wary of the unexpected. Still, the morning that Bradford was traded to the Vikings, the Eagles locker room was in a state of shock. Trade away your quarterback this close to the season? What the hell was management thinking? We didnt even think wed see Carson as the backup all year, Jenkins said. The day of the trade, Kelce looked at his phone and saw a text from Wentz. Would it be cool if he came to the next offensive line meeting to hear them talk about blitz protections? Kelce laughed. In his six years in the NFL, that was a first. I think the best quarterbacks are always guys you naturally gravitate toward, Kelce said. Carsons work ethic, the confidence he shows, his competitiveness, all that leads to you wanting to fight for him that much harder.Wentz was under immense pressure in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns. Hes not ashamed to admit he felt it. Hed barely had any reps with the first-team offense, and he just so happened to be playing the team that passed on the chance to pick him at No. 2 in the draft. Browns chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta even went so far as to explain the decision in a radio interview by saying the Browns didnt believe Wentz would ever be one of the 20 best quarterbacks in the NFL. If he struggled, the narrative of his rookie season would be established right away: This small-town kid from a small college might not be good enough to play with the big boys.Zach Ertz plucked his first pass, a back-shoulder fade toward the sideline, out of the air with one hand and tumbled to the ground. A first down and a chance to breathe. What happened next will stick with Wentz forever: He zipped passes into tight spots, carved up the Browns defense with stoic precision and marched down the field. On the ninth play of the drive, he lofted a perfect corner route to Matthews in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown. It set in, Wentz said. Its just football. Im over it. Theres no nerves. I was kind of like, Hey, you can do this.Wentz and Matthews ran at each other, looking for all intents and purposes like an epic flying chest bump was in order. Instead, they screeched to a halt, then nailed the perfect execution of the All Business handshake. Social media ate it up.When Kelce thinks about the moment Wentz truly won over the veterans, however, he points instead to a mostly forgotten play in the third quarter that should have been a disaster. It was fourth-and-6 from the 40, and Pederson decided to gamble and go for it. The Browns came at Wentz with an all-out blitz, and linebacker Demario Davis came tearing through the A-gap essentially untouched, looking like a van driving downhill with no brakes. This was the first true test. We didnt have it picked up, Kelce said. We had it blocked wrong. And he delivered a strike right on the money, got the first down, but he got crushed. He bounced up like nothing happened. On the very next play, Wentz threw a touchdown to Agholor, a 35-yard laser that helped put the game away. The Eagles cruised to a 29-10 victory.Wentz vowed during his hot start to not get overconfident. He knew there would be many humbling moments to come. In his postgame comments, he often looked every bit the part of the nervous rookie, never quite certain what to do with his hands, gesturing and fidgeting, frequently tugging on his shaggy red beard. But Eagles fans couldnt help but feel like theyd seen the future of the franchise. The team went 3-0 to open the season, and Pro Football Focus -- a website that studies film and grades every single NFL play -- gave Wentz the highest grades of any rookie in the 11 years of the sites existence. His jersey was the top-selling jersey in the NFL. Vice President Joe Biden, a longtime Eagles fan, was so excited that he supposedly told President Obama to get on the Wentz wagon. When a member of the Eagles media relations department showed Wentz a clip of Obama sharing the anecdote in a campaign speech, the quarterback didnt know what to say. It was too surreal to appreciate. It was weird and cool, Wentz said. We were 3-0, and everyone was hyped. But ... Im not an idiot. I know were not going undefeated. I know Im not going to throw a touchdown every game.He didnt like feeling bigger than the team and started making small, subtle gestures to make it clear that what he most wanted was to be one of the boys. One week, on the Eagles day off, he invited a small group of teammates over to his house for dinner. He talked about his love of hunting and fishing and admitted that when he decided to buy a boat in the offseason, he intentionally bought a big one -- more boat than he needed, really -- so he could take a big group of teammates out on the water. He ordered pizzas, put Aldean on the speakers, and staged a mini-tournament of cornhole, darts and pool. They spent hours laughing, bonding and competing.Bit by bit, one small gesture at a time, the kid from flyover country was opening up, letting others in.The drive from the Eagles practice facility to Wentzs home in southern New Jersey takes at least 30 minutes, without traffic. At first, Wentz thought hed made a mistake, that hed bought a home too far from work. But as the season unfolded, those 30 minutes became his sanctuary, the only place life slowed down.Occasionally he put on faith music, or a Christian-themed podcast, but most often, he used that time to decompress; to talk on the phone with his longtime girlfriend, Melissa Uhrich, a nurse who still lives and works in Fargo. He hoped she could eventually move to Philadelphia, but at the moment, their lives were too busy to contemplate such a dramatic step. He often took solace in Hebrews 12, a New Testament verse that reminded him of a simple lesson: When running the hectic race of life, never forget to keep his eyes fixed on Jesus. Football was a blessing, and while he worked hard every day to be great, faith was what mattered. He and Matthews began having long conversations about the kind of Christians they wanted to be. At first, he probably thought, OK, this guy just wants to get to know me because he wants the ball, Matthews said. I think now he knows without me telling him, If you never throw me another ball, were still brothers in Christ. As the season went on, Wentz would rely heavily on that faith to help him feel grounded. Just as he predicted, the Eagles impressive start was too good to continue. Defenses realized Wentz was actually great against the blitz -- at one point, he was the highest-rated quarterback in the league against pressure -- so they sat back and tried to make him fit the ball into tight windows. Wentz grew tentative with some of his throws and started settling for underneath routes instead of pushing the ball downfield. He looked mortal in close losses to the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. Entering Week 12, Wentz ranked 28th in the league in yards per attempt at 6.57. His Total QBR was 45.1, next-to-last in the league.Against the New York Giants in Week 9, he had a chance to win the game late (despite two early interceptions), but he threw a pass that Matthews couldnt snag in the end zone with 1:23 to play in the fourth quarter. He made the right read, seeing that Matthews had single coverage and that hed beat his man, but Wentz threw the ball to the outside, and Matthews thought he had an opening inside.Youd like to see him get a little bit sharper, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. Specifically in situational football. We as an offense need to make improvements, but hes our quarterback. He needs to lead the way. When the Eagles lost 26-15 to Seattle in Week 11, the teams fifth defeat in seven games, a new media narrative began to emerge: Were Wentzs teammates holding back his progress? The rookie quarterback wasnt great against the Seattle Seahawks, getting baited into bonehead interceptions by Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor, but there were also stretches when he threw darts against the best defense in football and his wide receivers (particularly Agholor) let him down. Agholor lined up incorrectly on a first-half screen pass, negating a 57-yard touchdown to Ertz, and then on the very next play, Agholor dropped a pass from Wentz that would have resulted in a 30-yard gain. On that pass, Wentz used his eyes to fool Earl Thomas -- maybe the best free safety in football --?helping Agholor break free over the middle.Wentz had every right to be livid, to rip into Agholor for his series of costly errors. It was a prime example of the thin margin between failure and success in the NFL, and a potential moment of truth for the Eagles entire season. All that chemistry Wentz had worked to establish, all that locker room loyalty hed engendered, could easily disappear with one harsh word. Eagles fans were howling for Agholors release, and Wentz had to take a position in front of the cameras. In the postgame news conference, Wentz walked in wearing his navy blue suit and powder blue tie -- looking more like a polished Brooklyn hipster than a Bismarck bumpkin -- and sternly defended Agholor. We have not lost confidence in him, Wentz said. I have not lost confidence in him. Weve just got to keep encouraging him. He works his tail off. A lot of things he does, you guys dont see. After practice, before practice, he wants to be great. Were just going to keep working with him.Wentz even followed up with Agholor later in the week, encouraging him, then promising he would help Agholor regain his confidence. The message, in sense, was a reflection of both Proverbs 27:17 and Wentzs entire belief system:?Just as iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another.Whatever happens the rest of the season, one thing became clear: The quiet, redheaded rookie, the man once viewed as little more than a 2016 footnote, would be their leader going forward. Devon Hall Jersey . Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. Speaking Thursday on TSN 1050 Thursday, the Leafs GM also touched on the questions surrounding the teams leadership and the struggles of his big-name free-agent signing. “Its not from lack of effort from the coaching staff. Penrith players have declared the tackle that ended Reagan Campbell-Gillards NRL season a cheap shot. The Panthers prop remains in hospital and will miss the teams finals campaign after suffering a broken back in a tackle from Gold Coast forward Ryan James on Saturday. He isnt expected back home until the end of the week.It was the second time in as many weeks James tackles ended an opposition players season, having broken Wests Tigers fullback James Tedescos jaw the previous weekend.James was charged but escaped a ban for the Tedesco incident while the match review committee deemed he had no case to answer over the Campbell-Gillard one.The Panthers were still furious when they returned to training on Tuesday.Yeah, 100 per cent it was a cheap shot, said winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak told AAP.Someone comes in like that, theyre going to hurt someone. I know a lot of the boys are filthy.Centre Tyrone Peachey was also fuming, arguing that Campbell-Gillard was unsighted and held in a tackle and so unable to brace himself for the impact and vulnerable to injury. He expects a rise in players targeting opposition players baccks in when held in tackles. This just cant be happening.Second-rower Isaah Yeo was one of several teammates to visit Campbell-Gillard in hospital after the game, and questioned why James got involved in the tackle.Reg thought the tackle was over and we all did as well, said Yeo.To come in late and hit him in the back when it wasnt expected, wasnt tensed up, you can really see where the problems are going to happen.Myself, I just try and pin the legs together so obviously all his weight goes over the top.I dont know what Ryan James is doing in there to be honest. St George Illawarra have ruled out making a play for NRL free agent Chris Sandow after the halfback walked out on Super League side Warrington. Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys .Sandow was branded sometimes unreliable and a pain by Warrington chief executive Tony Smith after he informed the Wolves he wouldnt be returning to England. The former Parramatta playmaker was immediately linked with the Dragons, who have rookie Drew Hutchison and veteran Josh McCrone as No.7 options next season. But St George Illawarra recruitment boss Ian Millward put a line through that idea on Tuesday.(Our recruitment) keeps getting linked with the halfback position and the latest one is Chris Sandow. I can say Chris Sandow wont be with our club in 2017 and onwards, he said.Look, were in a position in the halfback spot where we feel that what weve got is the best people available and were really happy with them.Millwards comments come after Sandows reputation took a hammering from the Wolves, with Smith saying he was neither surprised nor disappointed his halfback had walked out.Sandow was expected to turn up for day one of pre-season on Monday, however he is understood to be in Australia preparing for a boxing match against Todd Carney in December. To leave it to the last minute before pre-season training started is pretty ordinary, Smith told Total Rugby League.Surprised? No. Disappointed? No.His exit from the club, and possibly the Super League, prompts speculation of an NRL return, but Smiths spray could dent any hopes Sandow might hold.He was okay for most of it and at sometimes he was a pain in the proverbial, Smith said.He brightened us up at different stages and was exciting to watch for a while but he became a bit unreliable. We saw glimpses of what he is capable of after that. I dont think he was as near as comprehensive as he was in the first half of the season.I can honestly say because of what he overall contributed to our squad and our team, Im not too bothered.Karl Fitzpatrick, Warringtons head of operations who is due to take over as chief executive in January, described the no-show as a clear breach of contract.Sandow made a tremendous start to the 2016 Super League season, winning player of the month in February and March but was hampered by injuries thereafter. The 27-year-old helped the Wolves into the Challenge Cup final and Super League grand final this year, both of which they lost. HOUSTON -- Louisville coach Bobby Petrino was blunt. We blew it, he said.Duke Catalon scored three touchdowns and Houston hurried and harassed Heisman favorite Lamar Jackson all night to propel the Cougars to a stunning 36-10 victory over the Cardinals on Thursday night that dashed the third-ranked teams playoff hopes.Louisville (9-2) entered the game ranked fifth in the College Football Playoff rankings, but was outdone by a Houston team that saw its own playoff hopes foiled by two losses to unranked teams after a 5-0 start. We lost, Jackson said. Cant do nothing about it.The Cardinals were unhappy they werent ranked higher in this weeks CFP rankings after losses by several top teams last week, and some players thought they let that angst affect their play on Thursday.I think we let that get to us too much. I think we paid too much attention to the rankings instead of playing our game, safety Dee Smith said. We were just trying to do too much.Things went wrong quickly for the mistake-prone Cardinals when they fumbled the opening kickoff to Houston (9-2). Greg Ward threw his first touchdown pass on the next play to make it 7-0. Brandon Radcliff lost a fumble later in the first and Houston added a field goal on the ensuing drive to make it 10-0.Jackson threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, but it didnt come until the second half.Houston then scored touchdowns on three straight possessions in the second quarter to push the lead to 31-0 at halftime. Catalon caught a touchdown pass, ran for another score and Houston got the third score in that span on a 50-yard pass by receiver Linell Bonner after a lateral. We were banged up. We were beat up. We were tired. We were exhausted in the month of October, Houston coach Tom Herman said. Thats not an excuse. Thats reality. And our guys fought through it and they fought through that adversity and they never wavered ... and when you get the band back together and you get everybody healthy and everybody fresh and everybody doing their job ... we can play with anybody in the country. And we proved that again tonight. The Cougars were in Jacksons face constantly, sacking him a season-high 11 times and keeping him from hurting them with his feet. He ran for a season-low 33 yards after piling up 338 yards rushing combined in the last two games. After Jackson was sacked for the 10th time he threw up his hands and two of his lineman looked to be yelling at each other about who was to blame for his latest takedown. But the Cougars werent done getting after him just yet. On the nexxt possession he threw the ball away while under heavy pressure from Tyus Bowser and was flagged for intentional grounding, giving the Cougars a safety. Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys Authentic. Petrino said he saw frustration build in Jackson as the sacks piled up.Oh yeah, there was frustration there, he said. There was frustration on the protection and frustration on himself -- missing a few throws. Thats one of the things on the sideline there definitely was frustration and it grew.Ward threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns to help the Cougars to the victory that left Cougar fans storming the field to celebrate.---=THE TAKEAWAY=LOUISVILLE: The Cardinals may not have made the playoff even if they didnt lose on Thursday night, but the opportunity was theirs for the taking. Now they only have themselves to blame for being on the outside looking in.HOUSTON: The Cougars looked like the team that knocked off then-No. 3 Oklahoma in their opener instead of the underperforming one that lost at Navy and SMU to fall out of the top 25 weeks ago. The victory, which was their fourth straight over a top-10 team, will go a long way toward put a positive spin on what had turned into a disappointing season.---=KEY NUMBERS=The Cardinals set a season-high with 15 penalties, punted a season-high six times by halftime and the 11 sacks they allowed were more than double their previous season-high. Its the fewest points theyve scored since a loss at North Carolina in 2011.---=HEISMAN HOPES=Jackson entered the game as such an overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman that the loss shouldnt put that big of a dent in his chances. However Jackson insists that he isnt concerned about that.Im not even focused on that, he said. Im focused on winning.---=POLL IMPLICATIONS=LOUISVILLE: This loss will send the Cardinals tumbling down in the poll and in the playoff rankings. Theyll likely drop out of the top-10 but could stay in depending on how the teams above them fare this weekend.HOUSTON: The Cougars are likely to re-enter the poll after being unranked since the week after their loss to SMU on Oct. 22. They had the most points of any team not ranked last week so it wouldnt be surprising for them to move up to No. 20 or so after the big win.---=UP NEXT=LOUISVILLE : The Cardinals wrap up the regular season with a rivalry game against Kentucky next Saturday.HOUSTON : The Cougars travel to Memphis on Friday for their regular-season finale. NEW ORLEANS -- Peter Finney, a sports writer whose award-winning career in New Orleans spanned nearly 70 years, died Saturday at the age of 88. His longtime former employer, NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune, reported that he died at his New Orleans home.Finney began his career with the New Orleans States-Item in 1945 and joined the Times-Picayune through a newspaper merger in 1980. He was the Times-Picayunes lead columnist for decades until his retirement in 2013.He covered the first game the New Orleans Saints ever played, in 1967, and their only Super Bowl, in 2010. His career encompassed all of LSUs national football titles, which occurred in 1958, 2003 and 2007.Finney wrote about 15,000 articles. A selection was republished in a book this year. It included his coverage of LSU Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannons touchdown return against Mississippi on Halloween 1959 and Saints kicker Tom Dempseys game-winning, NFL-record 63-yard field goal in 1970.He profiled some of the most famous athletes of the past century, including boxer Muhammad Ali; golfers Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods; basketball stars Pete Maravich and Shaquille ONeal; football stars Joe Namath, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Archie Manning, Peyton Manning and Eli Manning; Olympic track champion Jesse Owens and more. And while New Orleans has never been home to Major League Baseball, Finney profiled many of the sports biggest stars, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.Finney attended more than three dozen Super Bowls. Having covered a Saints franchise that didnt have a winning season in its first two decades, and didnt win a playoff game until its 34th season, he summed up New Orleans first trip to the Super Bowl this way: Finally, all the comedy, all the catcalls, all the misery during the reign of the bag heads, have given way to Kismet.Finney also published books about the first 100 years of LSU football and a book about Maravichs extraordinary college basketball career at LSU.The Louisiana Sports Writers Associations columnist-of-the-year award was recently renamed for Finney, who also was honored with lifetime achievement awards from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame.Finney was born in New Orleans, where he attended Jesuit High School and Loyola University. MEDELLIN, Colombia -- The pilot of the chartered plane carrying a Brazilian soccer team told air traffic controllers he had run out of fuel and desperately pleaded for permission to land before crashing into the Andes, according to a leaked recording of the final minutes of the doomed flight. In the sometimes chaotic exchange with the air traffic tower, the pilot of the British-built jet requests permission to land because of fuel problems without making a formal distress call. A female controller explained another plane that had been diverted with mechanical problems was already approaching the runway and had priority, instructing the pilot to wait seven minutes. As the jetliner circled in a holding pattern, the pilot grew more desperate. Complete electrical failure, without fuel, he said in the tense final moments before the plane set off on a four-minute death spiral that ended with it slamming into a mountainside Monday night.By then the controller had gauged the seriousness of the situation and told the other plane to abandon its approach to make way for the charter jet. It was too late. Just before going silent, the pilot said he was flying at an altitude of 9,000 feet and made a final plea to land: Vectors, senorita. Landing vectors. The recording, obtained Wednesday by Colombian media, appeared to confirm the accounts of a surviving flight attendant and a pilot flying nearby who overheard the frantic exchange. These, along with the lack of an explosion upon impact, point to a rare case of fuel running out as a cause of the crash of the jetliner, which experts said was flying at its maximum range. For now, authorities are avoiding singling out any one cause of the crash, which killed all but six of the 77 people on board, including members of Brazils Chapecoense soccer team traveling to Medellin for the Copa Sudamericana finals -- the culmination of a fairy tale season that had electrified soccer-crazed Brazil.A full investigation is expected to take months and will review everything from the 17-year-old aircrafts flight and maintenance history to the voice and instruments data in the black boxes recovered Tuesday at the crash site on a muddy hillside. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board was taking part in the investigation because the planes engines were made by an American manufacturer. As the probe continued, mourning soccer fans in Medellin and the southern Brazilian town of Chapeco, where the team is from, held simultaneous stadium tributes to the victims. The six survivors were recovering in hospitals, with three in critical but stable condition, while forensic specialists worked to identify the victims so they could be transferred to a waiting cargo plane sent by the Brazilian air force to repatriate the bodies.Alfredo Bocanegra, head of Colombias aviation agency, said that while evidence initially pointed to an electrical problem, the possibility the crash was caused by lack of fuel has not been ruled out. Planes need to have enough extra fuel on board to fly at least 30 to 45 minutes to another airport in the case of an emergency, and rarely fly in a straight line because of turbulence or othher reasons. Nike NFL Jerseys China. Before being taken offline, the website of LaMia, the Bolivian-based charter company, said the British Aerospace 146 Avro RJ85 jetliners maximum range was 2,965 kilometers (1,600 nautical miles) -- just under the distance between Medellin and Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where the flight originated carrying close to its full passenger capacity. If this is confirmed by the investigators it would be very painful because it stems from negligence, Bocanegra told Caracol Radio on Wednesday when asked whether the plane should not have attempted such a long haul. One key piece to unlocking the mystery could come from Ximena Sanchez, a Bolivian flight attendant who survived the crash and told rescuers the plane had run out of fuel moments before the crash. Investigators were expected to interview her Wednesday at the clinic near Medellin where she is recovering. We ran out of fuel. The airplane turned off, rescuer Arquimedes Mejia quoted Sanchez as saying as he pulled her from the wreckage. That was the only thing she told me, he told The Associated Press.Investigators also want to speak to Juan Sebastian Upegui, the co-pilot of an Avianca commercial flight who was in contact with air traffic controllers near Medellins Jose Maria Cordova airport at the time the chartered plane went down.In a four-minute recording circulated on social media, Upegui described how he heard the flights pilot request priority to land because he was out of fuel. Growing ever more desperate, the pilot eventually declared a total electrical failure, Upegui said, before the plane quickly began to lose speed and altitude.I remember I was pulling really hard for them, saying `Make it, make it, make it, make it, Upeqgui says in the recording. Then it stopped. ... The controllers voice starts to break up and she sounds really sad. Were in the plane and start to cry.No traces of fuel have been found at the crash site and the plane did not explode on impact, one of the reasons there were six survivors. However, there could be other explanations for that: The pilot may have intentionally dumped fuel in the hopes of reducing the risk of a fireball in a crash, or the aircraft could have suffered a fuel leak or other unexplained reason for losing fuel.John Cox, a retired airline pilot and CEO of Florida-based Safety Operating Systems, said the aircrafts amount of fuel deserves a careful look. The airplane was being flight-planned right to its maximum. Right there it says that even if everything goes well they are not going to have a large amount of fuel when they arrive, said Cox. I dont understand how they could do the flight nonstop with the fuel requirements that the regulations stipulate.--Goodman reported from Bogota.
