Niki Lauda has told Sky Sports News HQ he wants Nico Rosbergs Mercedes future sorted in the next three weeks. Ian Desmond Jersey . Rosberg has been with the world champions since 2010 but his current deal expires at the end of this season, with reports in Italy linking him with a high-profile switch to rivals Ferrari. Both driver and team have been insistent that they would like things to stay as they are, however, and Mercedes non-executive chairman Lauda wants the situation cleared up soon. Im sure we want to keep Nico, and Nico wants to stay, Lauda told Sky Sports News HQs Craig Slater at the Monaco GP. I dont see any issues at all and this will be fixed very soon.Monaco GP P2: Ricciardo faster than HamiltonWe have to decide it in the next three weeks. This is my point of view, to let him know that we all stick together for the next couple of years. This is my suggestion, but Im only the chairman. Toto [Wolff] will handle it and Ill watch it. Nico Rosberg refused to answer questions on whether he had spoken to Lewis Hamilton since their coming together in Spain Mercedes confirmed a new three-year deal for Hamilton at last years race in the principality, but team boss Toto Wolff told SSNHQ on Wednesday there would be no such announcement regarding Rosbergs future this weekend. But Wolff, who has been quoted in the foreign media talking up Fernando Alonso as a possible replacement, was eager to downplay the possibility of Rosberg, the current championship leader, leaving. The F1 Gossip ColumnWe are having talks and we are just finding out what we want, what each others objectives are, and this is a regular process, the teams principal said.I would not be surprised [if he was approached by Ferrari]. Sky Italias Antonio Boselli discusses the rumours on the possible Nico Rosberg move to Ferrari But would the long-running feud between himself and Hamilton affect the decision, especially after their crash at the Spanish GP?Absolutely not, Wolff added. Hes been part of the Mercedes family since the journey began in 2010, hes the current championship leader, has won seven races in a row, nobody ever doubts in his capabilities.Rosberg has four wins to his name this season but was off the pace on the first day of running in Monaco, trailing Lewis Hamilton in both sessions.Watch the Monaco GP live on Sky Sports F1. Daniel Ricciardo said he felt relief when he crossed the line ahead of Sebastian Vettel and returned to the podium with third position in Hungary. .Despite a strong start, Ricciardo settled for third behind the Mercedes drivers in the opening stint. He briefly looked to have taken the initiative with an early second and final pit stop for soft tyres, though it soon became clear Mercedes had pace in hand to open the gap.?Explaining the logic behind the earlier second stop, Ricciardo said: At the time we looked quite competitive to Mercedes. I think I was closing them a few tenths a lap, and basically we thought they were struggling and tried to be aggressive and try and get close to them if they were going to pit soon too. Also, I think Seb [Vettel] wasnt too far behind but it was more about trying to fight for the win rather than defending behind us. That was pretty much that. After that they just turned up the volume unfortunately.Following that stop, Ricciardo spent the last laps holding off Ferraris Sebastian Vettel, who had fresher soft tyres on his car.In the end the fight was then with Sebastian, he got pretty close at the end, I did a long stint on those tyres. It wasnt easy, the last lap, he had DRS and in my mirrors it looked like he got quite close in Turn 1. A bit of a fight so it was a bit of a relief, actually, coming across and keeping third.Ricciardo briefly looked like he was going to have the lead coming out of Turn 1 by passing both Mercedes drivers around the outside. However, eventual winner Lewis Hamilton had good drive out of the exit on the inside and powered clear of the Red Bull, who then lost another position to Nico Rosberg at Turn 2.When asked if he could have led throughout if he had successfully passed both Silver Arrows cars, he said: I think for a part of the race, sure. There were moments where we looked competitive, compared to Mercedes. I think once the first stint settled they had a bit more pace than us.But at the start of the second stint, with the soft, we seemed really competitive but in the end it looked like Mercedes was doing what they needed to do and their pace got stronger and stronger. There were parts of the race where we thought we were but they were able to up the pace. Probably couldnt have lasted the 70 laps if Id got the lead at the start - but what if, I dont know. . On Saturday night, the normally free throw-challenged centre did just that. Howard scored 18 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, including 13 of 19 free throws in a 2 1/2-minute stretch, and the Houston Rockets beat the Denver Nuggets 122-111. . Spiller left Week 3s 27-20 loss to the New York Jets with a thigh injury, but fully practiced with the team all week and expects to be ready to go on Sunday. . Louis Cardinals. Victorino is batting sixth and playing right field after missing two games because of back tightness. BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Zack Sucher topped the DAP Championship leaderboard at 7 under Friday when second-round play was suspended because of darkness in the Tour Finals opener.Sucher bogeyed the par-5 16th hole and was playing the par-3 17th at Canterbury when play was stopped.?Seventeen is just hard, Sucher said. Its like 242 (yards) and its dark. Barely see anything, so not the easiest hole to play at night. The 29-year-old former UAB player, 38th on the Tour money list, finished the rain-delayed first round with a 65 on Friday morning.I didnt really do anything great today, but everything was good, Sucher said. I just hit a lot of fairways, I was below the hole all day, and I made a couple good putts. Didnt make any mistakes until 16.Bryson DeChambeau was a stroke back along with Stuart Appleby, Rory Sabbatini, Whee Kim, Scott Harrington and Cameron Percy.DeChambeau, the 22-year-old former SMU player who swept the 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur titles, finished off a 70 in fading light. He birdied his seventh hole to reach 9 under, then bogeyed three of the next four holes. Percy shot 66, Sabbatini, Kim and Harrington 67, and Appleby 68.I played really well starting out, DeChambeau said. Its kind of a disappointing round to what could have been a great day, but Im only one back and could be tied for the lead. It is what it is. I know that I should be around 10 or 11 under, but I cant say that because Im not. Im 66 under going into the weekend, and I have a good shot to win this tournament still. John Peterson was 5 under with five holes to play. Henrik Norlander (65) and Will MacKenzie (67) also were 5 under. The four-event series features the top 75 players from the Tour money list, Nos. 126-200 in the PGA Tours FedEx Cup standings and non-members such as DeChambeau who earned enough money to have placed in the top 200 had they been eligible. The top 25 players on the Tour regular-season money list earned PGA Tour cards. They are competing against each other for tour priority, with regular-season earnings counting in their totals. The other players are fighting for 25 cards based on series earnings.Andrew Johnston was 3 under with two holes left. The Englishman was eighth in the British Open.First-round leader Bobby Wyatt was 2 under with 4 holes left. He shot a 63 on Thursday.Two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton was 1 under after a regular-season money champion Wesley Bryan will miss the cut after shooting his second 71. He won three times this year to earn an immediate PGA Tour promotion.PGA Tour winner Camilo Villegas and Thailands Kiradech Aphibarnrat also will miss the cut. Cats and sharks clearly dont mix but Geelong coach Chris Scott says hed risk open rebellion if he tried to ban his AFL players from surfing. .The club confirmed key tall Lachie Henderson was surfing with former Carlton teammate Jarrad Waite at Bells Beach last week when a nearby surfer was knocked from his board by a shark.AFL players are discouraged from taking part in activities that put them in harms way, with some risky pastimes banned outright.Several Cats players, including star recruit Patrick Dangerfield, take to the waters along Geelongs popular surf coast during the season. But Scott admits he could have a mutiny on his hands if he tried to stop his players catching a wave in their down time.I reckon I would ... weve got a lot of surfers and its an important part of their preparation, Scott said with a wry smile. So Ill just try to not to think about the sharks. The incident provided Scott with one of the more-bizarre scenarios an AFL coach has had to deal with as he prepares his team for a preliminary final. While several other surfers had the perfectly natural reaction of paddling madly for shore, Henderson and Waite remained in the surf.I was interested to hear that they stayed out there - I knew they were brave but I didnt realise they were that brave, Scott added. It probably suggests to me it was more likely a dolphin than a shark. No one was harmed in the incident. . Manuel was offered a position the day he was fired. He accepted earlier this week and the team made the announcement Friday. . 1 position. NEW YORK -- The NFL sent a memo to the 32 teams to clarify what is valid identification after a man with a new District of Columbia drivers license was initially denied purchasing alcohol at a stadium.A vendor at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, did not recognize the license and turned away Aninda Maitra, thinking the ID was from the country of Colombia. The vendor asked for Maitras passport.Maitra, 36, told the Washington Post he eventually got his beer, but Eleanor Holmes Norton, a delegate to the House of Representatives from the District, wrote to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about the incident.Last week, the NFL responded to Norton, saying it has sent photos of the old and new DC drivers licenses to the clubs and directed them to share this information with their concession management teams. As you know, our stadium vendors are chargeed with the difficult task of combatting fraudulent forms of identification, the NFL said in its letter, signed by Jocelyn Moore, senior vice president of public policy and government affairs. They undergo specific training aimed at preventing the sale of alcohol to minors. However, a patron of legal age, with a valid photo identification, should not be denied on that basis.A spokeswoman for MetLife Stadium referred The Associated Press to the NFLs letter.Maitra told the Post he is pleased with the NFLs response. Its a good step that they are taking to get the new ID out there and get people aware that Washington and District of Columbia are the same thing, he said with a chuckle, and that, yes, its on American soil. SAN DIEGO -- Jon Lester had another strong outing and his teammates powered their way to another win. Jack Morris Jersey .Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Jason Heyward all homered to back Lester as the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Monday night.Lester (14-4) limited the Padres to a run and five hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked two in winning for the 10th time in his last 11 decisions. The left-hander improved to 5-0 with six quality starts out of seven since the All-Star break.Game after game after game you kind of know what to expect from him right now, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. He had really good stuff tonight.Lester was making his first regular-season appearance at Petco Park, the last active ballpark where he hadnt yet started.I just try to go pitch and do a good job, he said. Thats all I worry about. The main number for me that Im always concerned about is 200 innings. If thats there, then all the other stuff is kind of gravy.Bryants solo shot in the fifth inning was his 32nd of the year, tying him with Colorados Nolan Arenado for the National League lead.Russell added his third home run in two days, and the struggling Heyward -- recently benched to rest mentally -- got his first since July 29.It was great for Jason to be able to do that, Cubs manager Joe Madden said. Those are the kinds of things that can get his confidence going again and going in the right direction.Anthony Rizzo had four hits to tie a career-high for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have won six of their last eight games and 20 of 25.Edwin Jackson (3-4) gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked four, one intentionally, as he snapped a three-start winning streak. It just wasnt a great job by me, Jackson said. The Padres, who have lost seven of nine, had only one runner reach third base in the opening five innings.Lester was lifted at 100 pitches after Alex Dickerson and Christian Bethancourt opened the seventh with singles. Justin Grimm, the first of three relievers, came on and allowed a run on a wild pitch when striking out Ryan Schimpf.San Diegos only other threat was in the sixth, as Brett Wallace advanced to third on a one-out single and two-base error by Heyward in right when he overran the ball. But Lester struck out Travis Jankowski looking and, after a walk to Alexei Ramirez, struck out Wil Myers with a devastating curveball.Chicago pulled away with a three-run fifth, which featured two home runs. Bryant led off with arching shot into the left-center field seats. After Rizzos double, Heyward hit his long fly for a 5-0 advantage. That was the one that really hurt, that two-run homer, Jackson said. That kind of put a damper on things. The Cubs forged ahead 2-0 in the third as Jackson struggled with his command. Rizzo singled in between walks to Dexter Fowler and Ben Zobrist. That set up Russells sacrifice fly for his second RBI in two innings. You cant fall behind, especially against a team like this, Jackson said.Russell slugged Jacksons 86-mph slider for a home run in the second, his third solo blast in two days for a 1-0 edge. That was a horrible pitch to Russell, Jackson said. He should have hit that one out.The other two pitches hit for homers werent bad, just not good enough against the powerful Cubs. That is a difficult lineup to navigate, Padres manager Andy Green said.TRAINERS ROOMPadres: OF Jabari Blash was placed on the disabled list with a sprained left finger.UP NEXTCubs: RHP Jake Arrieta (15-5, 2.75 ERA) prevailed in his last outing on Thursday against Arizona, but he wasnt sharp. Arrieta, who has nine road wins, had a career-high seven walks and allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings.Padres: LHP Christian Friedrich (4-9, 4.69 ERA) looks to snap a three-start losing streak as he has dropped seven of his past nine outings. He was effective on Wednesday against Tampa Bay, working 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Aaron Loup Jersey . This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. Joe Carter Jersey . General manager Jarmo Kekalainen told Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch on Friday that he wants to see Gaboriks contributions go beyond the scoresheet before considering a long-term deal for the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent. . Bryant, who signed a five-year, $34 million contract as a free agent with Cleveland in March, reported symptoms on Monday morning, a team spokesman said. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Bills cornerback Aaron Williams had reservations when new defensive co-ordinator Mike Pettine first outlined the plan to switch him to safety. After two inconsistent seasons in Buffalo during which Williams struggled to secure a starting job, he initially wondered whether the position change was a reflection of his performance. Williams second concern was how quickly he could pick up the new role and its expanded responsibilities of calling plays and making on-field adjustments. "Oh, man, at first, I was like a chicken with a cut-off head," Williams said. "But I never back off any challenge. Youre put in the fire, just roll with it." As it turns out, the new job just might be a more natural fit for Williams, who is providing the Bills safety in numbers filling the starting spot left open by Jairus Byrds off-season-long absence. Though Buffalo retained Byrds rights by designating him their franchise player in March, the two-time Pro Bowl player has yet to sign the teams one-year contract offer while attempting to negotiate a long-term deal. Williams has shown signs of being a capable Plan B during spring practices, which concluded Thursday with the end of a three-day mandatory minicamp. He had an interception in each of the three practices, capped by Williams under-cutting a route to pick off rookie EJ Manuel in the end zone. "Yeah, thats what theyre expecting me to do," Williams said. "Its me being consistent, making plays every day, not just every once in a while. So Im changing my attitude toward this year, and looking for a better season." Williams endured what he called "ups and downs" since Buffalo selected him out of Texas in the second round of the 2011 draft. He had a promising rookie season, in which he had an interception and forced fumble in starting six of nine games. Williams did miss five games because of a chest injury. He took a step back last year, despite starting 10 of 11 games. Struggling in coverage, he finished with no interceptions, was credited with just seven passes defended, and missed five games after hurting his right knee. "I think it was one of those years that tested my character: how I handle bad situations; how I handle adversity," Williams said. "I know what it feels like to be on the upside and also the downside. Ive pretty mucch matured and became a veteran player, I can say. Curtis Granderson Jersey. " Pettine has faith in Williams, and said the positional switch had nothing to do with performance or Byrds absence. "Its a move we were going to make," Pettine said. In his previous stint as the New York Jets defensive co-ordinator, Pettine had Williams listed as a safety coming out of college. He also noted that Williams 6-foot, 200-pound frame combined with his sideline-to-sideline range is better suited for the defence hes installing in Buffalo. "If you can have a safety that has corner skills, that to me is ideal," Pettine said, noting the NFL is trending toward more of a passing than running style of offence. "I would sacrifice the ability to be a box player, a thicker guy and a thumper type: Id sacrifice that for the cover skills any day." Hes pleased with how quickly Williams has picked up the new position: "Id say hes ahead of schedule." And Pettine noted Williams can now fill two roles -- safety and cornerback -- in a defence that demands versatility from its players. The Bills defensive backfield is young and unsettled, especially minus Byrd, a four-year starter. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the teams 2011 first-round pick, is the only other returning starter. Williams isnt sure how his role might change once Byrd arrives. "Really, to be honest with you, thats above my pay scale," he said. Hes instead relying on the advice former teammate George Wilson provided this off-season, when Williams expressed concerns about switching roles. "He said, Its something you cant be concerned about. Focus on what your responsibilities are," Williams said, referring to Wilson, who signed with Tennessee after being cut by the Bills. "I thoroughly thought about that," Williams said. "I cant really help that they want me at safety. Thats where they felt like the team needed me." ------ NOTES: DE Mario Williams had a blunt assessment in describing Pettines philosophy to his attacking style of defence. Williams said: "He usually says, Kill them or hurt them. Thats what I always hear." ... DBs Ron Brooks (left leg), Justin Rogers and Crezdon Butler all missed practice Thursday after being hurt a day earlier. ... ST. . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rookie Wil Myers ended a game that saw former Cy Young Award winners David Price and Tim Lincecum start out by matching each other nearly pitch-for-pitch. Myers hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. "He does not lack for confidence," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He really wanted to be in that moment." Desmond Jennings drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Jean Machi (2-1) and stole second. Ben Zobrist was intentionally walked and Evan Longoria walked to load the bases on four pitches before Myers won it on his 0-1 liner that went over the left fielders head. "It was just one of those things that I knew he had to throw a good pitch," Myers said. "Its a good situation to be in, bases loaded, no outs. I just tried to stay calm up there." Myers parents were in attendance for his first walko-ff hit. He had a 12-game hitting streak end Friday. "Its pretty cool to have them here for this one," Myers said. Closer Fernando Rodney (4-2) allowed two hits during a scoreless 10th, striking out Brandon Crawford with two on and two out. The starters were outstanding. Price gave up one run, five hits and struck out five in nine innings. In seven starts since returning from a left triceps injury, the Rays left-hander has allowed just 10 runs, 38 hits, one walk, and struck out 40 over 57 1-3 innings. "Its just executing pitches," Price said. Lincecum allowed one run, six hits, one walk and fanned five in seven innings. "We know we were up against some good pitching and we knew we had to make something happen, but you dont go out there thinking Ive got to pitch against Price, Ive got to be perfect," Lincecum said. "I have to be perfect regardless of who Im pitching against so it wasnt any added pressure." Lincecum was making his third start -- the previous two were losses -- since throwing a no-hitter at San Diego July 13. "Hes in a good place," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Hes strong, hes got a lot of confidence going. Hes using all his pitches. Hes on the top of his game so it was a well pitched game on both sides." It was just the second game in Rays history that featured two former Cy Young Award winners. The first came May 9 when Price pitched against Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in a contest that included both reigning winners. Jeff Francoeur doubled leading off eighth for his third hit in three at-bats against Price and advanced to third on fly, but was left stranded when Crawford hit a soft liner and Andres Torres had a grounder. Crawford put San Francisco up 1-0 with an RBI single in the third. Price struck out Crawford with runners on second and third to end the fifth. Zobrist tied it at 1 in the third on a run-scoring grounder that drove in Jose Molina, who walked to open the inning. Molina went to second on wild pitch and advanced to third on Kelly Johnsons infield single that saw Lincecum get in the way of first baseman Brett Pill as he tried to tag out Johnson. "We just got kind of tangled up over there," Lincecum said. "I can see that he wanted to cover first on his own, and I was just kind of in the way of that." Giants catcher Buster Posey made a nifty play in the fourth on Myers infield single. He chased down an errant throw by the first-base dugout and threw out the speedy rookie as he tried to reach second. Longoria went 0 for 3, including three strikeouts and two walks, and is hitless in his last 17 at-bats. He hit just .194 in July, a month the Rays went 21-5. NOTES: Rays RHP Alex Cobb, hit in the head by a liner in June, gave up one run and three hits over four innings for Class A Charlotte in his second rehab start. His first outing July 23 ended after just two pitches due to a blister. ... Giants RHP Ryan Vogelsong (fractured right hand) will make his fourth appearance with Double-A Richmond Sunday and is nearing a return to the rotation. ... Left-handed hitting Giants 1B Brandon Belt, who had three hits in Friday night 4-1 win after three games off for a mental break and work on his swing, was not in the lineup with Price starting. . Sgt. Eric ONeal says most of the arrests at Monday nights game were for public drunkenness, though one person was taken into custody on suspicion of trying to steal a seat from the stadium. . Despite the cost, effort and an improved steroid test, its possible that very few -- if any -- positives will be detected, Dr. Richard Budgett told The Associated Press in an interview. "We just dont know what the results from Torino will be," Budgett said. . While hell be dialed in to that tournament on a course he loves, you can forgive him if his eyes glance down the calendar just a bit, towards April. The ICC recently set aside a proposal to divide Test cricket into two tiers. The idea of dividing Test-playing nations into two leagues is often accompanied by a proposal to turn bilateral Test tours into components of a larger league. It is not clear why spectators would be more likely to watch a Test match today because it is part of a Test championship where the title will be awarded three years from now. The argument about context seems to be little more than a rhetorical device for justifying the shrinking of the highest level of cricket to a competition among seven teams. Though the proposal has been shelved for now, the actions of crickets administrators in recent years suggest that under the guise of making the game more competitive, Test cricket will eventually be reduced to a smaller competition. In the 21st century, as cricket has become a lucrative commodity for television broadcasters, no board has been able to resist the temptation to shape things in a way that suits the interests of broadcasters. This is especially true about T20, the most lucrative format, one made for TV.Since the first T20 game was played in 2003, the number of matches played each year has grown. This growth spurt peaked in 2013, when 731 T20 matches were played globally. In January 2016, 180 T20 matches were played, the most in a single month to date. Further increases in T20 cricket are proposed. In June 2016, the BCCI announced plans for a mini-IPL. A new city-based T20 league is also planned in England. This will probably be in addition to the existing 133-match domestic T20 tournament that features county teams.T20 started out as a seasonal game. From 2003 to 2009, about 60% of all T20 games were played in the four months from April through July. This pattern changed in the period from 2010 to 2015, when T20 games were distributed more evenly through the year. This has had an effect on Test and ODI cricket. A total of 1009 ODIs were played from 2003 to 2009 (144 per year), and 781 were played in 2010-15 (130 per year). Both periods included two World Cup tournaments. If we consider ODI matches featuring only the top eight Test-playing nations (setting aside matches involving Bangladesh for the sake of even comparison), 84 matches per year were played from 2003 to 09, 75 in 2010-15.Test cricket has been similarly affected. A total of 309 Tests were played in 2003-09 (44 per year), 252 in 2010-15 (42 per year). If you consider only matches featuring Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa, 69 were played in 2003-09 (about ten per year), 54 in 2010-15 (nine per year). Considering matches involving only India, Australia and England, 40 Tests were played in 2003-09 (5.7 per year), 47 were played in 2010-15 (7.8 per year). Since his Test debut in November 2010, Kane Williamson has played 52 Tests. In the same period Alastair Cook has played 73.While the five smaller established nations - South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies, have played less Test cricket among themselves in 2010-15 compared to 2003-09, the record is the opposite in ODI cricket. From 2003 to 2009, they averaged 24 ODIs per year. In 2010-15, this increased to 26 ODIs per year.International cricket has been mauled by the pressure of T20 into featuring the more lucrative short-form games. It is important to remember that this does not mean Test cricket does not generate revenue. However, given the existence of highly lucrative shorter forms, the incentive to play less lucrative forms is reduced. If Test cricket is divided into two tiers, and if the top tier is designed to include seven teams, it will effectively mean shrinking Test cricket from a ten-team sport to a seven-team sport. This will codify and accelerate a process that, as the data shows, began early this decade. The Big Three - India, Australia and England - have played a larger share of Tests than before. They also host the biggest T20 leagues. The star players from the five second-tier Test-playing nations will be easily lured away by various T20 franchises. Most crucially, whereas T20 leagues today have to compete with a ten-team Test match sport, they will effectively have to compete with only a seven-team sport. Imagine being one of top eight established nations relegated to the second-tier Test league. It effectively means being banned from quality Test match competition for one league cycle. For many players, it could mean the end of their Test careers. If a tier system has to be created, it should not depend on splitting the existing set of Test teams. At worst, perhaps Zimbabwe could be the lead team of the second tier, which could involve teams ranked 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 in the world, with the possibility of one team moving up or down following a play-off. That would genuinely expand the game. It would give at least three to four teams in this second tier a realistic chance for promotion. It will also protect the established Test nations from the danger of relegation, which could prove catastrophic to their prospects as a Test-playing power. Existing Test nations must be protected from the vicious cycle of not getting games, becoming worse as a result, and then not getting games because they are worse than they used to be.It is not clear how the purpose of growing the game will be served if the highest, most difficult level is practised by fewer teams than before. It is true that Bangladesh v England at Lords is likely to be one-sided in the short term (or even in the medium term), but Bangladesh will benefit from the experience, just as India, Pakistan and New Zealand did from the many tours they undertook in the years after World War II.Conventional wisdom has it that T20 is a gateway drug to cricket. It is a method to introduce the game to new audiences and potential playing populations. The evidence suggests that it has played out the other way. Cricket has been the gateway drug to T20. T20 leagues came into being because all the ingredients for making profits were already in place thanks to decades of cricket.Cricket did not develop in India because it was a popular sport for the masses. It developed because there was a critical mass of organised clubs in the big cities of British India (and later independent India). These clubs were organised into a board, which in turn organised bigger tournaments and put together a representative team whose exploits made the sport popular in other parts of the country. The possibility of playing tier-two Test cricket would be an ideal stepping stone for Associate Member teams that currently compete in tournaments like the Intercontinental Cup. Just like with clubs in Mumbai or Colombo, given the opportunity, clubs in Associate member countries could learn to produce competitive representative teams. If these teams are successful, it is possible that they will be popular. This will eventually invite private investors. Private enterprise typically takes root only in conditions where the likelihood of success is already reasonably high.A two-tier system along the lines of the proposal that has been shelved for now will probably serve the short-term interests of the established boards. A greater concentration of highly competitive games will mean more money in TV contracts the next time these are negotiated. Does the reduction of the games highest form to a competition between seven teams serve any purpose beyond gaining a few extra percentage points in revenue in the next TV contract negotiations? Administrators ought to keep one eye on where they would like cricket to be in, say, 2050 and weigh that against the benefits of a few extra dollars in 2019. Theyre already brought Melbourne City down a notch, and coach Kenny Lowe says the key to Perths A-League success is how well they outsmart their better-resourced rivals. .Glory were roundly written off before Friday nights clash, given no chance at AAMI Park against a star-studded outfit that had so ruthlessly disposed of Melbourne Victory 4-1 the weekend prior. But Lowes men shattered Citys derby delight in a famous 3-2 win that reminded the league why they too are very much in title contention.Andy Keoghs match-winning hat-trick aside, Perths tactics shut down John van t Schips vaunted attack, their compact set-up disrupting their opponents rhythm and providing a raft of opportunities on the counter. The well-drilled display was a lesson on how to outfox the leagues big guns. The whole league has gone up a level and the two Melbourne clubs and Sydney clubs are at the forefront of that, Lowe told AAP.Theyre in front of everybody with resources and recruitment ... so weve got to be smarter in the way we do things. If we dont have all that weve got to find other ways to maximise our edge. The fiery win gave unbeaten Perth seven points from three games and lifted them top of the table leading into Sundays matches between Wellington and Sydney FC and Western Sydney and Newcastle. The stars will further align with key trio Adam Taggart (calf), Shane Lowry (hip) and Rhys Williams a chance to return for next weeks trip to Brisbane. But Lowe himself could miss the game if the match review panel decide to punish the coach after he was sent to the stands for his heated halftime altercation with referee Alan Milliner.City will look to reinstate some spark in time for Tuesday nights blockbuster FFA Cup semi-final with Victory, when Kevin Muscats troop seek revenge buoyed by Saturdays 2-1 defeat of the Reds. The defending champions attempted twice as many shots as Victory yet slumped to a second-straight defeat after Marco Rojas ended the frantic meeting with a stoppage-time goal. The better team definitely lost that one, said Adelaides goalscorer Tarek Elrich. We created all those chances and hit the post. Newport Gwent Dragons hope Saturdays European Challenge Cup semi-final against Montpellier will be a case of third time lucky. . The Dragons have lost both of their previous last-four fixtures in the competition, conceding over 45 points on each occasion. They face a stern test at the Altrad Stadium against the Top 14 heavyweights, who are targeting a domestic and European double, and the departure of Lyn Jones as director of rugby will not have helped the Welsh regions preparations. Throw in the Dragons struggles in the PRO12, where they sit third-bottom after 16 defeats in 20 games, and their chances in the south of France appear bleak, but hooker Elliot Dee says the squad are in confident mood after their fantastic quarter-final win over Gloucester on April 9.I cant wait, its a massive game for us, said the 22-year-old. We got to the semi-final last year and we want to go one further again.I think we play exciting stuff in Europe and it was a massive buzz after the Gloucester game, and thats what you play rugby for, you cant beat days like that. Sulaiman, 44, was chosen unanimously Tuesday in a vote by the leadership, the World Boxing Council said. Sulaiman becomes the sixth president of the organization. LANDOVER, Md. -- Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Green Bay Packers offense began the game with a trio of three-and-outs.Later, once Rodgers & Co. got going, tight end Jared Cook fumbled away the ball after a catch. The Packers defense gave up passes of 70, 53 and 44 yards and allowed three TD runs to an undrafted rookie. Its special teams had problematic moments, too, including a missed field-goal attempt and a botched kickoff return that resulted in a drive starting at Green Bays own 2.Add it all up, and Green Bay flailed its way to a fourth consecutive loss, this one by a 42-24 score against the Washington Redskins on Sunday night. We see ourselves as a much better football team than this. Its just not panning out, Packers safety Micah Hyde said. We have way too much talent in this locker room to be performing like that. But week in, week out, were doing it. Im speechless. In each game of Green Bays current losing skid, the team has allowed at least 30 points.Coming in here, we knew we needed this game, coach Mike McCarthy said. Our backs up against it.His Packers beat the Redskins in the playoffs last season and are perennially seen as a title contender, but are now 4-6 and in third place in the NFC North, two games behind both the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings.Theyre probably not playing like we normally see the Packers play, said Robert Kelley, the rookie running back who carried 24 times for 137 yards and scores from 1, 4 and 10 yards out.The Packers secondary never seemed to be in the right place at the right time Sunday, allowing Washingtons Kirk Cousins to go 21 of 30 for 375 yards, three TDs and zero interceptions. We didnt stop `em. Our pass defense, we didnt get off the field. It was touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, field goal in thee second half, McCarthy said. . That tells the story. The Packers actually led 10-7 late in the second quarter and, after falling behind 29-17 early in the fourth quarter on Cousins 70-yard TD to Pierre Garcon, pulled to 29-24 on Rodgers 6-yard connection with Cook. Anyones game at that point, right? Nope. The Redskins converted a risky fourth-and-1 at their own 41 on a sneak by Cousins and were on their way.Green Bays next drive ended with Cooks turnover. We put ourselves in a tough spot, said Rodgers, who was 26 of 41 for 351 yards, three TDs and zero interceptions. So weve got find a way to get a win next week and approach it one week at a time. Thats all weve got right now.He was hardly at his best on a wind-whipped evening, putting throws at receivers feet or over their heads, even from short range. But the porous defense is Green Bays biggest issue at the moment -- as it has been while dropping five of their past six games. You cant win ballgames giving up that many points, Hyde said, no matter whos on offense. Now comes another prime-time game next week, this time on a Monday at the Philadelphia Eagles.McCarthy was asked whether he has the right players to succeed on defense. This is not the time for personnel evaluations, coaching evaluations and those type of things, he replied. Texas thrilling double-overtime victory over 10th-ranked Notre Dame last Sunday turned enough heads to push the Longhorns into the AP rankings, at No. 11, for the first time since December 2013.Now that the Longhorns have earned the respect and the notion from the college football world that Texas is pertinent again, theyll have to work not to throw away all theyve gained. That quest continues Saturday when the Longhorns host Texas-El Paso at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. It was a great team win for us, Texas coach Charlie Strong said of the Notre Dame game. It was a fun night -- Im so happy and so proud. Probably last year we couldnt have won this game. Now we have to continue to build on how we got here because one game does not make a season.Texas (1-0) won because the two quarterback system adopted by the Longhorns at the 11th hour worked almost flawlessly against Notre Dame.Freshman Shane Buechele (16 of 26, 280 yards, two touchdowns) did just about everything right, save for a third quarter interception that almost cost Texas the game. Senior Tyrone Swoopes, a player who would rather not be in the spotlight but whos had little choice, exceled in the power running package, rushing for three touchdowns including the game winner.Texas running back DOnta Foreman had 131 rushing yards and wide receiver John Burt caught six passes for 111 yards, 72 of which came on a touchdown pass from Buechele on the second play of the third quarter. The Longhorns have already matched the number of 100-yard receiving games they had during the 2015 season.Hey, were 1-0, Strong said. We wanted make a statement and we did. There are so many things we can clean up and get better at. You have to grow from game to game, and you have to get better from game to game. Youve gott to take this game, correct the mistakes, move on to the next one, and we cant have the same ones. Scott Schebler Jersey. HOUSTON — It was yet another example of what the Houston Astros look like when their lineup depth flashes Authentic Mitchell Marner Jersey , their fourth win in their final at-bat this season offering a glimpse of potential even when everything didn’t quite fall into place.

As the Astros (51-27) near the halfway point of the schedule on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals, they recognize fully that they will require more wins like the one they recorded on Saturday to keep pace in the chase for the best record in the American League.

They were handcuffed by a scuffling pitcher for seven innings before the bottom third of their order helped complete a game-tying rally in the ninth.

And, while Houston failed to walk it off in the 11th, the bottom third of its order generated just enough traffic for the heavy hitters to come to bat in the 12th and secure the 4-3 victory.

Designated hitter Evan Gattis, batting seventh, produced the game-tying RBI with his sacrifice fly in the ninth inning following an 0-for-3 start to his evening. Marwin Gonzalez, batting eighth, walked in both of his final two plate appearances after recording three strikeouts against Royals starter Ian Kennedy. By churning out quality plate appearances, the job was easier up top.

“We’re at our best when those guys are doing something at the bottom,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “That takes a lot of pressure off the top of the order or the middle of the order to have to do it every time. That’s why we think we have a complete team.”

Right-hander Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.59 ERA) will start the series finale for the Astros in the rubber match. Cole did not factor into the decision in his last start, a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, after allowing four runs on three hits and five walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

He made his lone start against the Royals on July 21 Womens Henrik Zetterberg Jersey , 2015, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings in a 3-2 loss at Kauffman Stadium when he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Right-hander Jason Hammel (2-8, 4.88 ERA) gets the starting nod for the Royals. Hammel is 2-2 with a 2.85 ERA over nine career appearances (eight starts) against the Astros, including a 1.74 ERA over his last three starts. He hasn’t pitched at Minute Maid Park since 2014.

Hammel, who issued a season-high four walks in his previous outing, has issued two or fewer walks in 11 of 15 appearances this season and is tied for fifth in the American League with 37 starts with two or fewer walks since the start of 2017. His four walks against the Texas Rangers snapped a 37-start streak of walking three or few batters dating back to May 29, 2017.

After delivering at the plate and in the field for the Royals (23-53) in the opener, right fielder Rosell Herrera had a quiet night on Saturday, going 0-for-4 with a walk. Claimed off waivers from Cincinnati on June 2, Herrera was recalled from Triple-A Omaha last Sunday and has worked to show the defensive range and offensive versatility that could make him an asset as the Royals take extended looks at some of the younger players on their major league roster.

“He’s athletic, he’s fast,” Royals manager Ned Yost said of Herrera. “He seems to swing the bat OK from both sides. It’s only been a week. There’s a lot to like looking at him on a short look.”

DeSean Jackson is eager to rebound from one of the least productive seasons of his career and help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers end a long playoff drought.

The Bucs struggled a year ago to incorporate the speedy receiver into an offense expected to be more potent after the three-time Pro Bowl selection was signed to a $33.5 million contract in free agency.

Jackson, 31 Womens Ben Roethlisberger Jersey , established himself as one of the league's top deep threats over nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins.

He averaged a career-worst 13.4 yards per reception and scored just three touchdowns in his first year with Tampa Bay, which lost 10 of 13 following a 2-1 start to miss the playoffs for the 10th straight season.

The Cleveland Browns, who haven't earned a playoff berth since 2002, are the only team with a longer playoff drought.

"Any time I get an opportunity to make good plays and spark this offense with explosive plays ... or scoring touchdowns 鈥?whatever it is, I'm here to do (it)," Jackson said.

"Obviously last year was a disappointing year for myself and the team," the receiver added. "I just want to be able to ... give them high energy, good plays, and explosive plays."

Jackson, who spent extra time in the offseason with Jameis Winston in hopes of improving chemistry between him and the quarterback on deep throws, enters his 11th season with 548 receptions for 9,487 yards and 49 TDs.

He's also scored three touchdowns rushing and four more on punt returns.

"D-Jack is about 40 years old, but he's still the fastest dude on our team John Hayden Jersey ," defensive tackle Gerald McCoy joked. "It's hard for guys to run with him."

Nevertheless, the Bucs couldn't get the ball to him consistently in 2017.

While Winston's favorite target, Mike Evans, continued to prosper with his fourth consecutive season with 1,000 yards receiving, Jackson finished with 50 catches for 668 yards 鈥?both lows for him in a year when he's played at least 12 games.

And, for the first time since his rookie year with the Eagles in 2008, Jackson didn't have a reception of at least 60 yards.

While he's not making any bold predictions, the receiver is confident the offense will be better this fall.

"We have a lot of weapons and a lot of options for the quarterback to drop back and throw the ball to. I'm excited about that," said Jackson, who has three receptions for 91 yards through two preseason games.

The veteran receiver thinks Tampa Bay has one of the best groups of targets in the league with himself, Evans, Chris Godwin Jason Pominville Jersey Kids , Adam Humphries and tight ends Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard.

He also likes offseason moves that included bolstering the offensive and defensive lines, as well as drafting running back Ronald Jones.

"We have a lot more competitive players now. A lot of new additions coming from winning mentalities. They're able to push the drive and push other guys on this team to the highest of their potential," Jackson said.

"Obviously last year was a frustrating year for everyone that's a part of the Buccaneers. But there's one common goal: to go out there, put the work in, and hopefully the results show on Sundays."

Coach Dirk Koetter said Jackson is having an outstanding training camp.

"I think DeSean has really asserted himself not only as a veteran, but as a leader," the coach said.

"DeSean has instant street cred because of his career. ... It's a big difference if you see a guy that you respect out there doing what he's supposed to do versus a guy that's out there moping around," Koetter added. "Hats off to him, he's doing a good job."

Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon announced that he would not be with the Browns for the start of training camp in a Twitter post on Monday due to what he called “a part of my overall health and treatment plan.”

Gordon Ryan Kesler Jersey , who has been suspended several times for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy, said that he’s been able to “utilize the resources available to me that will ensure my well-being on and off the field” with help from the Browns. General Manager John Dorsey released a statement a short time later affirming the team’s support for Gordon and announcing the roster move the team made to reflect his absence.

“We will continue to support Josh as he receives the care needed to maintain his progress,” Dorsey said. “We are going to respect his privacy while he is away from the team. Josh will be placed on the non-football illness reserve list until he is ready to return.”

Gordon is eligible to be activated from the NFI list at any point and indicated that he expects to be back with the team in time for the regular season.

Mike Sullivan knows his team is ”wired” for offense, as tends to happen when you have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and – increasingly – Jake Guentzel on your roster.

Yet the Pittsburgh Penguins have proven during their two-year run atop the NHL they know what they’re doing at the other end of the ice, too, playing with a discipline that’s more grit than glamour.

Their hopes for a historic three-peat remain alive because of it.

Guentzel scored twice and the Penguins held Washington star Alex Ovechkin without a shot on goal for just the third time in 107 career playoff games to grind out a 3-1 victory in Game 4 on Thursday night to even their typically taut Eastern Conference semifinal.

Pittsburgh held Washington to three shots total in the third period.

”It’s like we played Game 7 tonight Mathew Barzal Jersey ,” said Malkin, who scored from his belly late in the second period to put Pittsburgh in front to stay. ”Unbelievable.”

Well. Not exactly.

This is what tends to happen when the two longtime rivals meet in the postseason. Washington edges ahead and the Penguins respond immediately, one of the main reasons Pittsburgh is 9-1 all-time against the Capitals in the playoffs.

Plenty of work remains to be done for Washington to shrug off the weight of its ignominious history and for the Penguins to push their bid for a three-peat to the next round. Yet Pittsburgh laid down the blueprint over three periods that were decidedly tamer than the Game 3 chaos caused in large part by Washington forward Tom Wilson’s illegal high hit that left rookie Zach Aston-Reese with a broken jaw and led the league to suspend Wilson for three games.

While Sullivan downplayed the impact of Wilson’s absence, the pushing and shoving was largely kept to a minimum save for a scrap between Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang and Washington’s T.J. Oshie as Guentzel skated down the ice to flip in an empty-net goal with 58 seconds to go.

For the Penguins, the stakes – as they so often have during Sullivan’s tenure – far outweighed any search for retribution.

”We understood it’s a huge game for us,” Malkin said.

Instead the teams head to Washington for Game 5 on Saturday night all tied up, the ninth time in 11 postseason meetings the series will go at least six games. Same as it ever was.

Oshie scored Washington’s lone goal – a shot from the slot on the power play 12:55 into the second that knotted the score at 1 – and Braden Holtby finished with 21 saves but the Capitals couldn’t sneak anything else by Murray Womens JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey , who stopped 20 shots just two days after putting together an admittedly ”shaky” performance in Game 3.

The guys in front of Murray made his job relatively easy. The Penguins blocked 13 shots and rarely let Washington put together any sustained pressure.

Devante Smith-Pelly replaced Wilson on the top line with Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, but Pittsburgh kept the clamps on. Ovechkin failed to put a single puck on net, though Washington coach Barry Trotz downplayed Ovechkin’s ineffectiveness.

”Trust me, Ovie will get his shots,” Trotz said.

He’s going to have to if he wants to keep pace with Guentzel. A year after scoring a playoff-high 13 goals while helping the Penguins to a second consecutive Cup, the slender 23-year-old is once again thriving in May.

Guentzel gave the Penguins the lead 9:21 into the second period when he stood on the doorstep and banged home a rebound of Dominik Simon’s shot for his ninth of the playoffs and his 20th point of the postseason. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in 1988 are the last two players to reach 20 points in 10 or fewer postseason games.

”I just kind of feel like the (pucks) are going in right now,” Guentzel said.

Guentzel has a league-leading 10 playoff goals Johnny Gaudreau Jersey Kids , joining Mario Lemieux as the only NHL players to reach double digits in their first two career postseasons.

The 23-year-old, however, is still learning. He committed a slashing penalty after putting the Penguins in front, and Oshie’s shot from the slot 12:55 into the second tied it.

Malkin went to his belly to put Pittsburgh back in front with 2:33 to go in the second. The Russian star flung himself at the puck during a scrum in the crease, the puck just flitting over the goal line following a scramble. There was no initial goal call on the play, reminiscent of a sequence in Game 2 in which the red goal light remained unlit after Pittsburgh’s Patric Hornqvist jabbed at it from in front.

Replays in Game 2 proved inconclusive and the Capitals held on. This time, the review was kinder to the Penguins. Video clearly showed the puck inching across the line Tom Kuhnhackl Jersey , and it stood after the Capitals challenged claiming goalie interference.

”It’s a good goal, we’re happy,” Malkin said. ”Sometimes it’s a bad call against us. Sometimes it’s a good call. But we’re looking at the next game. We understand it’s not over.”

NOTES: Crosby also failed to get a shot on goal but had two assists. … Pittsburgh F Carl Hagelin played 16:11 while wearing a full face shield in his return from an upper-body injury that forced him to miss the first three games of the series. … The Capitals have scored a playoff goal in nine of 10 playoff games. … The loss was Washington’s first on the road in the playoffs (4-1). … The Capitals were 1 for 3 on the power play. The Penguins were 2 for 4.

ANAHEIM Womens Antonio Brown Jersey , Calif. (AP) The Anaheim Ducks will retire the numbers of Paul Kariya and Scott Niedermayer during the upcoming season.

Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli announced the honors for the two Hockey Hall of Famers on Monday. Teemu Selanne’s No. 8 is the only number previously retired by the Ducks, who are heading into their 25th NHL season.

Kariya’s No. 9 will go into the Honda Center rafters on Oct. 21, and Niedermayer’s No. 27 will be raised Feb. 17.

Kariya spent his first nine NHL seasons with the then-Mighty Ducks, including seven seasons as Anaheim’s captain and six seasons alongside Selanne in a prolific scoring duo. Kariya, the first draft pick in franchise history, also helped the Ducks to their first Stanley Cup Final in 2003.

Kariya is still Anaheim’s fourth-leading career scorer with 669 points. Although he left the Ducks in a contract dispute shortly after that Western Conference championship run in 2003, Anaheim’s fans have long since re-embraced him.

”I am extremely honored and very thankful to Henry and Susan Samueli and the entire Ducks organization for this incredible recognition,” Kariya said in a statement. ”This is not something I ever dreamed would happen. I am very grateful to the community for their support.”

Kariya still lives and surfs in Orange County Youth Evgeni Malkin Jersey , but he rarely made public appearances associated with hockey or the Ducks for several years after he played his last NHL game in 2010. He began to reconnect publicly with the game and the franchise recently, lending his public support to the Ducks’ playoff appearances.

After Kariya and Selanne were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame together last year, Henry Samueli broadly hinted the Ducks would retire Kariya’s number soon.

Niedermayer spent his final five NHL seasons with the Ducks, scoring 264 points while providing sturdy defense and leadership during a stellar stretch of franchise history. He was the Ducks’ captain for four years, and he set the single-season franchise scoring record for defensemen while leading Anaheim to its only Stanley Cup title in 2007.

Niedermayer’s number was retired in 2011 by the New Jersey Devils, where he spent his first 13 seasons and won three Stanley Cup championships. He remained with the Ducks as an executive and coach after his retirement as a player with Anaheim in 2010.

”What an incredible honor,” Niedermayer said in a statement. ”I’m very grateful to have played for such an incredible organization in front of amazing Ducks fans. I’m also grateful for the amazing teammates, coaches and training staff I was able to work with in Anaheim. Together we achieved great things.”

Veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.

The 11-year pro with four franchises posted a message on Instagram saying "after 27 years of playing football Womens Todd Gurley Jersey , today I say farewell."

An All-Pro with San Diego in 2007, when he led the league with 10 interceptions, Cromartie was one of the NFL's best cover cornerbacks for much of his career, making four Pro Bowls. He also scored the longest touchdown in league history, returning a missed field goal by Minnesota for a 109-yard score in 2007.

Cromartie, 33, spent his first four seasons with the Chargers, making the playoffs each year. He then joined the Jets and made the AFC championship game with them in 2010 Youth Jordan Weal Jersey , his first of four straight seasons as a starter in Rex Ryan's defense.

He spent 2014 with Arizona, returned to the Jets in 2015, and finished his career in 2016 with Indianapolis.

Cromartie's ball skills, size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) and speed made him a desirable commodity even though he was an inconsistent tackler and often gambled in coverage. The Chargers selected him 19th overall in the 2006 draft.

"To The San Diego Chargers and the Spanos Family, thank you for believing in me," Cromartie wrote. "Thank you for taking a chance on a young kid from Tallahassee, Florida who did not play much in college. You believed in my ability and my potential to play at a professional level Youth Jake McCabe Jersey , and I will forever be grateful."

With the Jets in 2010, he combined with Darrelle Revis to form one of football's best cornerback tandems.

"I grew as a player, a man, and as a leader," he wrote of his time in New York. "The brotherhood I built here was undeniable. My heart will forever embrace the feeling of running through the tunnel and out onto the field with my brothers. My family and I will forever Bleed Green."
