after a win heading to Week 4 Welcome to SB Nation FanPulse — a survey of fans across the NFL , powered by SurveyMonkey. Each week, we send 32 polls to 100+ plugged in fans from each team. Browns fans, sign up HERE to join FanPulse. The Week 3 polls are in, so let’s take a look at the results! How confident are you in the direction of the team? Last week: 83 percent confidenceThis week, 96% of fans voted for their confidence in the direction of the Browns, a 13% boost from last week, and right back to where we were in Week 1. I’m telling you — Browns fans can taste the direction of this franchise changing (for the better), and they are soaking it up.The same effect didn’t happen for the Steelers. Despite getting their first win of the season last week against the Buccaneers, they flat-lined at 26% confidence from week to week. The Ravens are at 91%, up 17% from the previous week. The Bengals are at 63%, down 18% from the previous week. Will the Browns win or lose in Week 3?Odds: Raiders are 3-point favoritesDawgs By Nature FanPulse: Browns by 8Silver and Black Pride FanPulse: Raiders by 2Cleveland fans are the most confident they’ve been all season, predicting a margin of victory of 8 points. Raiders fans, on the other hand, are the least confident we’ve seen all year, only predicting a two-point win despite being at home. What is the worst team in the NFL?59% of fans voted for the Arizona Cardinals being the worst team in the NFL, and I fell into that majority too. The Oakland Raiders were up next with 23% of the votes. Had the Bills not just demolished the Vikings, they would’ve been a top contender for the poll too.Browns vs. Steelers Final Score: Ridiculous game ends in a 21-21 tie How are we supposed to feel? The Browns rallied from 21-7 down, took Pittsburgh to the limit in overtime...but we ended in a tie. A tie. We won’t go 0-16...but it was a tie? Ugh.Let’s get to how it went down. With the rain falling heavily, it was an ugly first half for both teams. For Cleveland, they couldn’t produce much of anything on offense. For Pittsburgh, they could move the ball, but QB Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdowns in the first half. The first one went to CB Denzel Ward after a play broke down mid-way through the first quarter:The Steelers got on the scoreboard first part-way into the second quarter, thanks to a third down unnecessary roughness penalty on DE Myles Garrett that led to a fresh set of downs. One play later, RB James Conner punched it in from 4 yards out to give Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead:The Browns’ second takeaway came when Roethlisberger tried to find WR Antonio Brown deep, but FS Damarious Randall got the jump on it:The Browns’ next drive could have had them facing a decision on 4th-and-5 in deep field goal range, but the decision was taken out of their hands when WR Josh Gordon was flagged (bad call) for unnecessary roughness on a block. The Steelers final interception of the half came when they were driving to close out the first half, and the rookie Ward came away with his second pick of the half:The Browns got things going to begin the second half, but it took a little bit of help. QB Tyrod Taylor was sacked on the first play. Backed up in their own territory, a defensive holding on a run play by the Steekers’ nose tackle gave them a first down. Then, CB Artie Burns was fuming after a block by WR Jarvis Landry pancaked him, and he whipped off his helmet for a 15-yard penalty. From there Cleveland Browns T-Shirt , it was ground-and-pound from all three Cleveland running backs. Then, Taylor scrambled and took it in himself from 20 yards out to tie the game at 7-7.Unfortunately, it didn’t last long. On the first play of the next drive, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster caught a quick pass and ran 67 yards down to the goal line. Back-to-back touchdown plays were called back to penalties, but then Roethlisberger hit WR Antonio Brown up the right edge for a 22-yard touchdown despite darn-near perfect coverage from Ward to make it a 14-7 game. The game quickly flipped after that. The Browns did nothing on offense, had a short punt, and then Conner had carries of 17 and 22 yards, the latter of which put the Steelers up 21-7 toward the tail end of the third quarter.Cleveland was sparked again on offense with a big play to WR Jarvis Landry downfield. they tried to stay aggressive, but the deep ball to WR Josh Gordon in the end zone saw CB Joe Haden go up and make an aggressive play that certainly could have been pass interference. On second down, Taylor and TE David Njoku couldn’t connect on a hot read that could’ve been a big play. Finally, on third down, Njoku just flat out dropped a perfect first down pass.Cleveland tried to grind things out. But on 4th-and-5 in scoring range, Taylor’s end zone pass for Landry fell incomplete. With under 8 minutes to go, that appeared to be it...but then DE Myles Garrett poked the ball away from Conner on the next play, and SS Jabrill Peppers recovered and returned it to the 1 yard line! RB Carlos Hyde punched it in, making it a 21-14 game with 7:32 to play.On the next drive, Roethlisberger was hit by Garrett after a bobbled snap, leading to a fumble that was recovered by MLB Joe Schobert! Sadly, despite being on their end of the field, the offense went three-and-out and had to punt with about 5 minutes to go.The Browns forced a punt, and with just over 2 minutes to go, Taylor found WR Rashard Higgins for 38 yards down the right sideline! On the next play, Taylor found WR Josh Gordon for his first catch of the game, a 17-yard touchdown, to tie the game at 21-21 with 1:58 to play in regulation! The Steelers went three-and-out themselves, and Cleveland started driving past midfield. With no timeouts and 23 seconds left, from the 42 yard line, Taylor tried to air one out to Gordon down the right sideline. The pass was underthrown, though, and Pittsburgh intercepted the pass, forcing overtime. The Browns won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. They went three-and-out Cleveland Browns Hats , though, and had to punt to Pittsburgh, who got a big dumpoff to Conner to move to near midfield. The defense came alive, though! Garrett’s rush forced a hold, CB Terrance Mitchell broke up a pass, and pressure forced Roethlisberger to take a sack for 3rd-and-31. That led to a punt, and with under 6 minutes to go, now you start worrying about the thought of a tie.Especially after the Browns went three-and-out, and now 4.5 minutes to go. A high snap on the punt, followed by the protector getting pushed into him, forced P Britton Colquitt to get rid of it quick, but short, allowing great field position for Big Ben. Several plays later, K Chris Boswell tried the game-winner from 42 yards out...and missed it!But the Browns went three-and-out. Despite there being 1:28 to play, they had to punt, giving Pittsburgh once last shot and basically settling for a tie at best....right? Right!?! Not yet!The Browns got pressure on Roethlisberger with 0:47 left and poked the ball out, allowing MLB Joe Schobert to intercept the pass and return it to within field goal range with 0:36 to go. That brought K Zane Gonzalez on for a 43-yard attempt...and it was blocked. :-/A tie.Quick HittersQB Tyrod Taylor: 15-of-39 for 197 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. 8 rushes, 77 yards, 1 TD.RB Carlos Hyde: 22 rushes, 62 yards, 1 TD. 1 catch, 3 yards (2 targets).WR Jarvis Landry: 7 catches, 106 yards (15 targets).WR Josh Gordon: 1 catch, 17 yards (3 targets). 1 TD.DE Myles Garrett: 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles.CB Denzel Ward: 5 tackles, 2 interceptions. The Browns forced 6 turnovers, but were out-gained 472 yards to 327 yards.

Welcome to SB Nation FanPulse — a survey of fans across the NFL Youth Genard Avery Jersey , powered by SurveyMonkey. Each week, we send 32 polls to 100+ plugged in fans from each team. Browns fans, sign up HERE to join FanPulse. The Week 5 polls are in, so let’s take a look at the results! How confident are you in the direction of the team? Last week: 96 percent confidenceThis week, 83% of fans voted for their confidence in the direction of the Browns, a 13% decline from last week. This is exactly where the Browns were at in terms of confidence heading into Week 3; the confidence was sky high after the win over the Jets, but settled back down after another loss. The Steelers, meanwhile, continue to plummet in fan confidence, dropping 11% from last week to be at a total of 15% confidence. Bengals fans shot up to 89% for their team , while the Ravens are at a perfect 100% confidence. Will the Browns win or lose in Week 5?Odds: Ravens are 3-point favoritesDawgs By Nature FanPulse: Ravens by 1Baltimore Beatdown FanPulse: Ravens by 10This is the first time that Browns fans have predicted that Cleveland would come out on the losing end of a game, and it’s by one point to the Ravens at home. Baltimore fans, building on their sky-high confidence meter, are also predicting a 10-point victory.Who is the NFL MVP after four weeks?Where’s Myles Garrett? (Kidding)53% of the votes went to Patrick Mahomes, and he is the guy I went with too. I mean, can he have any more of a perfect stat line through four games? He is 4-0 with 14 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, and exactly 1,200 yards passing. Not only that, but the throws he is making when you actually watch the games are electric and inspiring. If Mahomes fades , Jared Goff and Alvin Kamara are worthy candidates to be considered. Khalil Mack has been great on the defensive side too with 5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles.Baker Mayfield speeds up timeline, proves future is now for Browns Baker Mayfield was thrust into the primetime spotlight after starter Tyrod Taylor was knocked out of the game, and the rookie blew up every possible expectation while engineering a comeback win.The Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football, their first win in 635 days, in a game that very much looked like it was quickly getting away from them. Stubborn head coach Hue Jackson stuck with Taylor despite his consistent struggles moving the football, but a concussion forced his hand to play his rookie signal-caller.And Baker looked like nothing close to a rookie who hadn’t taken a single first-team practice rep during the short week leading up to Thursday night’s game. He made quick decisions, fit the ball into tight windows in rhythm, and made no crucial mistakes, save for a mistake on the goal-line that probably should have been intercepted. It wasn’t, but throwing the ball in the tight confines of a goal-line offense is something that he’ll have to work on in the coming weeks.Mayfield started with two quick completions that juiced his teammates and the FirstEnergy Stadium crowd like we haven’t seen in forever. That momentum snowballed throughout the rest of the game Youth Myles Garrett Jersey , leading the Browns to find a way to win a close game in the fourth quarter, a situation they had failed in so many times before over the past three miserable seasons. It looks like they finally learned how to win. It’s not officially official, but it may as well be. The Baker Mayfield era has begun for the Cleveland Browns.“Obviously, what he did tonight was outstanding for the football team and his teammates and just the way he competed,” Jackson said in his post-game press conference. “I have to watch the tape, and we will go from there.”You have to watch the tape, coach? Anyone with eyes and even a rudimentary understanding of football can save you some time: Mayfield is your starting quarterback.“It felt like it was moving quicker. It felt like that position was playing quicker. Seeing things very clearly and the ball was coming out of his hands,” Jackson added. “That was the good thing. I am going to watch the tape and make the best decision for the organization and for our football team moving forward.“That is my job. That is what I will do.”Jackson has no real choice other than to stick with Mayfield moving forward. Taylor will be in the concussion protocol this week, and the rookie’s performance has left little doubt who’s the better player. There isn’t any remaining justification for keeping him on the bench to “learn” by playing behind Taylor, when he so convincingly outplayed the veteran.Taylor had been good enough at times Authentic Terrance Mitchell Jersey , but he held onto the ball way too long and missed way too many throws, including a second-quarter bomb to Antonio Callaway that should have been a touchdown. Even worse, and maybe feeling his opportunity slipping away, Taylor blamed Callaway for some reason on the missed connection. If for some incomprehensible reason Jackson decides to go back to Taylor, the coach should be fired on the spot.Mayfield’s quarterback No. 1 now for the Browns, and there’s no nuance in the tape that’s going to change the considerable gap between the two players. Taylor is a great guy, and a hard worker, but the debate is over before it ever had a chance to start.Mayfield left no doubt.

Adam Humphries Jersey , right? Fitzmagic is sweeping the nation and it will be on full display in the Buccaneers’ lone prime time game (as it stands now) of 2018. With a desperate Pittsburgh Steelers team coming to town, Ryan Fitzpatrick has to maintain this level of blazing hotness in order to move the Bucs to 3-0.The Steelers are the Steelers for a reason. They overcome adversity and are constant and consistent championship contenders. With all the drama surrounding Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, the Steelers’ backs are against the wall unlike any time in recent memory. A loss to the Bucs on Monday night may put an early nail in their postseason coffin. It’s going to be on Fitz to continue to perform at a level of which we have never witnessed from him before. The Steelers enter the game with the 14th ranked passing defense, despite being shredded by Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes last week for six touchdowns. Ryan Fitzpatrick is entering the game as the NFL’s number one quarterback with 819 yards and eight touchdowns - nine if you include the rushing touchdown he has.The Buccaneers are also home of the number one receiver in DeSean Jackson, number nine receiver Mike Evans, and number three tight end O.J. Howard. The Steelers are ranked 30th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed, so the running game might really get going which is why Peyton Barber is an honorable mention as far as X-Factors are concerned. The Steelers and Bucs are ranked fifth and sixth respectively in points allowed, so we may be in for yet another shoot out, playing into the hands of Fitz and Ben Roethlisberger. Just because the Steelers are reeling right now is no reason to discount the fact that they still have the best receiver in the league in Brown or his partner in crime JuJu Smith-Schuster. Both guys will be going up against a young secondary that is currently allowing the second most passing yards in the NFL. Now this isn’t to bash the defense. The defense has made key stops in key moments this season and appears to be vastly improved from last season. That also doesn’t mean they aren’t giving up loads of yards in the passing game. It’s that “bend don’t break” we’ve all become accustomed to.One thing to note is that the Bucs are currently sitting at a +2 in turnover differential while the Steelers are -4. Again, that falls on Fitzpatrick’s ability to protect the football and make the smart decisions while Roethlisberger is more willing to take chances. Even Fitz’s one interception this season wasn’t his fault Demar Dotson Jersey , it was squarely on the shoulders of O.J. Howard. The Bucs are going to ride the hot hand and none is hotter than the right hand of Ryan Fitzpatrick. If the Buccaneers are going to finish off the most improbable three game start in recent memory - for them or any team given the fact that no one gave them a chance to even win one of these games - it’s going to take another magical performance from number fourteen.Buccaneers of the Week: at Chicago After every game, we’ll break down the Buccaneers’ top five players of the week. Point values will be distributed to each, which will then be added up for our weekly Buccaneers of the Week Standings.Sunday’s 48-10 loss to the Bears was an absolute mess for the Buccaneers. They got outplayed and flat-out dominated in every aspect of the game. From the opening kickoff, Tampa Bay never had a chance. There weren’t many shining performances from the Bucs, but let’s do our best to find the top five players from week four.5. Bryan Anger (One point)No, really. #PuntersArePeopleToo and on Sunday, Bryan Anger was #GoodForTheBrand. The Bucs needed Anger to punt five times in the loss to the Bears. He averaged 42.8 yards per kick, landed one inside Chicago’s 20 and finished with a long of 51. There usually aren’t many games that feature the punter as one of the top five players and if there is that type of game, it almost certainly wasn’t a fun one. Tampa Bay’s all-around performance on Sunday was ugly, but when the team called on Anger Chris Conte Jersey , he did his job and did it well— which can’t be said for too many others this week. Why shouldn’t he deserve a point for that?4. Chandler Catanzaro (Two points)Yes, we have TWO specialists on this week’s list. It was just that kind of game. Chandler Catanzaro didn’t make a huge difference, but he did connect on his only two kicks. The first was a 30-yard field goal to bring the game to 14-3 and the second was an extra point that brought the score to 45-10. Again, there was nothing overly special about what Catanzaro did against the Bears. He did his job. Like Anger, he gets these points for executing when his number was called. Not a lot of guys did that, but he was one of them. Plus, he is now five-for-six on field goals and 13-for-14 on extra points. Especially after what the Bucs have gone through with kickers in the last several years, he is doing a nice job through four games.3. Cameron Brate (Three points)Truthfully, it’s a surprise that it took this long for Cameron Brate to make his way onto this list. But he’s here for the first time in week four after catching three of his four targets for 29 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. With O.J. Howard out with an injury, he did what he could to represent the tight ends in the passing game. He found the end zone for the second time in two weeks and averaged 9.7 yards per catch. Tampa Bay will need more of that from him with Howard set to miss time with a sprained MCL.Brate got a contract extension this offseason and was picked as one of four players to be featured outside of Raymond James Stadium this year. In the first two games Ryan Smith Jersey , he was nowhere to be seen. But now, he appears to be reemerging as a force on this offense. With Jameis Winston back under center, Brate might be seeing an increase in targets. Knowing him and his past success, that increase in targets will lead to an increase in production. Getting in the end zone this past weekend was enough to get him into this week’s standings. All things considered, the Harvard grad was one of the only bright spots.2. DeSean Jackson (Four points)The offense was largely ineffective in Sunday’s blowout loss, but DeSean Jackson did manage to put up his third 100-yard receiving game in the first four weeks. He and Ryan Fitzpatrick connected for 48 yards on a nice crossing route in the first quarter before a 42-yard pickup in the second. That 42-yard catch came on a nice throw, sure, but the concentration from D-Jax to pull it in and keep two feet in was something else. The true test for Jackson comes now, as Jameis Winston returns to action. The two never quite got on the same page last year. Fitzpatrick then came in and developed a nice rapport with the veteran in the first four games. That begs the question: will the production continue with Winston back? The two talked at length during August about an increased trust and connection. They backed it up in the preseason. But now it’s time to prove it for real. Regardless of what happens after the bye week, Jackson gets four points this week andmoves into a second-place tie in the standings.1. Jason Pierre-Paul (Five points)There wasn’t going to be anybody else at the top this week. Jason Pierre-Paul was the biggest positive on what was otherwise an awful day for the Bucs. The veteran defensive end was getting after Mitchell Trubisky all day. Even down to the final few minutes of the afternoon Cheap O. J. Howard Jersey , he was going all-out. That’s what leaders do and it’s clear that he has established himself as a defensive leader in the first four weeks of the season. Gerald McCoy was fine on Sunday, but Pierre-Paul was THE guy on the defensive line. His effort and leadership probably could’ve been enough to land him on this list, but the production was there too. JPP led the team in tackles with seven (six solo) and picked up his fourth sack of the season. By now, everyone is well aware that Tampa Bay hasn’t had a player get to double-digits sacks in a season since Simeon Rice did it in 2005. Pierre-Paul is on his way to breaking the drought. Barring injury, he is on pace to do much more. The Buccaneer defense needs him to continue to play at a high level if it is going to recover from Sunday’s debacle. There’s no doubt that he’ll be up to the challenge.Updated Buccaneers of the Week Standings through week four:Ryan Fitzpatrick— 12 points(TIE) DeSean Jackson/Jason Pierre-Paul— 11 pointsMike Evans— 10 pointsKwon Alexander— 4 points(TIE) Lavonte David/Cameron Brate— 3 points(TIE) Offensive Line/Chandler Catanzaro— 2 points(TIE) Vernon Hargreaves/Bryan Anger— 1 point

Did you watch the same game as me?If so White DeSean Jackson Jersey , you were treated to an offensive clinic. Tampa Bay came through with one of the greatest offensive performances in history and it all happened with a backup quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick. That doesn’t happen in the NFL, especially against teams such as the Saints, who were picked by many to reach the Super Bowl this season. For our first final grades edition of 2018, let me explain how the system works. It will be a GPA-style scoring system. Offense, defense, special teams, and coaching will all be graded and then the final tally will be divided for the week’s number. As the season progresses, the overall grades will be tallied and divided by 16 at season’s end to let us know how the Bucs did for the whole season. How did the Bucs fare in Week 1? Let’s find out!OffenseI don’t even know where to start, honestly. From the first drive of the game, Tampa Bay’s offense was on point. Excellent play-calling combined with terrific execution continually threw the Saints off guard throughout the course of the entire game. The Bucs punted just once all day and it didn’t come until late in third quarter when they were attempting to run time off the clock. In my 30 years of watching this team, I cannot remember a stat line like that ever. The star of the show was Ryan Fitzpatrick. The crafty veteran posted a 156.3 quarterback rating - good for tops in the league - en route to a 417-yard performance that included four passing touchdowns and one touchdown on the ground. Not only did he make plays with his arm, but he also did so using his legs. Arguably his most impressive play on the ground was when he ran for a first down on a 3rd-and-11 to seal the victory. The receivers - the deepest unit on the team and possibly the best corps in the league - were dominant. Mike Evans owned Marshon Lattimore to the tune of 147 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions, while DeSean Jackson scored the first touchdown on the game on a beautiful 58-yard pass from Fitzpatrick. And here is Evans’ touchdown over Lattimore, which is guaranteed to make Bucs fans happy.Don’t count out Peyton Barber and the running game - they were major catalysts to the offensive success. Early in the game, Barber found a ton of room on the ground. He was able to average over six yards per carry in the first half, leaving the Saints’ defense to remain honest and stay close to home in order to stop him. The offensive line looked magnificent as well White Bryan Anger Jersey , not allowing a sack for the entire game, while giving Fitzpatrick all day long to hit his targets. For the day, the Bucs finished with 26 first downs and 529 total net yards. They averaged (8.5) yards per play and converted 8/13 third downs. They scored on their first four possessions of the game. Oh, and they had zero turnovers. There is some room for improvement. Tampa Bay ran the ball early, but couldn’t get a ground game going when they needed to run out the clock. They also scored on 50% of their red zone drives. That must be improved as well. In all, it was a miraculous performance that deserves the top grade. This is Harvard-type stuff, people. Final Grade: 4.0 (A) DefenseThis is where it gets tricky. Yes, the Bucs were playing the Saints in the Superdome. Yes, they were playing against of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time in Drew Brees. Yes, they were playing two of the best players at their position in receiver Michael Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara. But you can’t give up 40 points in a game and call it a good defensive effort. Before Sunday’s game, the Bucs were 0-56 all-time when allowing more than 35 points. New Orleans was able to march up and down the field at will against the Bucs. A fumble returned for a touchdown by safety Justin Evans and a sack by Vinny Curry were the only highlights of the day. Granted, the fumble arguably changed the course of the game, but once that ball hits the ground, it’s 50/50 as to who recovers the ball. The fact that he scored a touchdown makes the scenario even less likely. At the end of the day though, this is the NFL and it’s better to be lucky than good in most cases. To their credit, the defense did come out of the second half ready to play. They held the Saints to a three-and-out on their first possession and then forced a punt and a fumble on the next two drives. The Bucs allowed 65 net yards on 11 plays during the third quarter. If there is a launching point for a defense Youth O. J. Howard Jersey , then that should be it. They made plays when it mattered most, which is what you want out of your defense, but they were also a liability throughout 75% of the game. Mike Smith has to get this unit to perform more consistently as the season wears on. Final Grade: 2.0 (C)Special TeamsAll people want to know in this category are the answers to three simple questions: a) Did we give up any big plays? B) Did we make any big plays? C) Did we make all of our kicks? While the first two are important, those in the Bay area are mostly concerned with the latter question, given the recent history. Chandler Catanzaro made his first two field goal attempts and all of his PATs, but missed the most important kick of the game. Up 16 with under five minutes to play, Catanzaro’s 44-yard attempt would’ve iced the game for the Bucs. But instead, he missed and New Orleans went straight down the field and punched it in to make it a one-score game. This is a big deal. If Tampa Bay can’t count on Catanzaro to ice a game or hit a late field goal in the clutch, then have the Bucs really improved in this area at all? They were 3-7 in one-score games last season, but right now they are 1-0. How long will this hold if Catanzaro regularly misses these attempts? It’s a question that not many want to know the answer too and there’s good reason for that.Final Grade: 3.0 (B)CoachingWell, well, well. The biggest question mark on this team provided the largest answer on this season to date.Whether it be Dirk Koetter or Todd Monken calling the plays, the Bucs have to continue whatever it is they are currently doing. Even though this type of offensive performance isn’t sustainable, it doesn’t get much better than this. Now, the staff has a major key to unlocking the potential of this team. As for the defense, while it seemed like it’s business as usual White Ryan Fitzpatrick Jersey , there were also some bright spots. Mike Smith showed he can still make the proper adjustments at halftime and that’s very encouraging. Hopefully this victory allows the staff to see what changes need to be made when it comes to better preparing these players week in and week out. For now though, things are definitely trending in the right direction.Final Grade: 3.0 (B)Overall Grade For The Season: 3.0 (B)It was an excellent game, don’t get me wrong. But the little things in football oftentimes lead to wins and the Bucs didn’t hit on all cylinders when it came to the nuances of the game. The defensive liabilities, the lack of a running game when needed, and the missed field goal at the end of the game could’ve cost Tampa Bay if it weren’t for the Saints’ miscues. Overall, the season couldn’t have started better and the Week 2 showdown against the Eagles will be fun to watch.NFC South Offseason: Carolina Panthers Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images“Do you know what “nemesis” means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent.” That quote is from a scene in the Guy Ritchie classic, SNATCH. It’s one of my favorite scenes in the movie. The words are being spoken by a crime boss named Brick Top to three small time crooks. It’s a powerful statement meant to let the small time crooks know who's in charge. The Carolina Panthers are the Bucs nemesis. There really isn’t any way around that fact, in my opinion. I’d wager if you asked 10 Buccaneer fans who is the teams biggest rival in the NFC South, over half would say the Panthers. Do you know why? Because they beat the Bucs. A lot. Since the 2002 merger, the Panthers hold a 21-11 lead in the series. The Bucs trade punches with the Saints and the Falcons yearly, but have never found a way to consistently beat the Panthers and have lost eight of the last ten matchups. So what additions have Carolina made this offseason to improve on a 10-6 playoff season? Lets take a quick look.C.J. Anderson-The Panthers cut long time running back Jonathan Stewart and signed Anderson to compliment second year pro, Christian McCaffrey. Anderson will be the back up, but he will still be productive as he gained 1,000 yards on only 15 carries a game. He’s not going to break off many long runs, but he is tough to bring down and will make the tough yards. Donte Jackson-The addition of Jackson infuses the Panthers secondary, which lost their best cornerback in Darly Worley , with lots and lots of speed (4.32 40) and versatility. He can play inside, outside, line up at free safety and is very good in man coverage. He could challenge second year corner back Corn Elder for the outside starting role. Although he's a rookie, Jackson should see the field often at varying positions on the field.Dontari Poe-The former Atlanta Falcon jumped ship and replaces the departed Star Lotuleli. Poe had a solid year in 2017, registering 19 run stops and 37 total pressures. The Panthers had the 3rd best rush defense last season, and Poe’s addition won’t do anything to make running the ball any easier for opponents.Julius Peppers-The future Hall of Famer decided against retirement and signed a one year deal. The ageless wonder had eleven sacks last year. Peppers is all too familiar with the Bucs quarterbacks as he has seventeen and a half sacks over his career against Tampa Bay. His presence on the field will be a challenge for the Bucs offensive line. Torrey Smith-The Panthers lacked speed in their wide receiver core. They went out and traded for Smith to fix that problem and add a deep threat for Cam Newton. Although Smith hasn’t produced like a starting wide receiver in years, his ability to stretch a defense in Norv Turner’s offense will have to be accounted for by the Bucs secondary. In the NFL, good teams make small tweaks during the offseason in free agency and spend their draft picks on depth or small areas of need. The moves the Panthers made this offseason seem minimal, but they did address some key areas of need. They also changed their offensive coordinator. After firing Mike Shula, the Panthers hired Norv Tuner to replace him, in hopes of improving a nineteenth ranked offense. Turner’s vertical offense matches up well with Cam Newton’s strengths on the field, but it will remain to be seen how well his offensive philosophy will mesh with a talent depleted offensive line. All in all, the Panthers should be a formidable opponent in 2018 and one the Bucs will need to find a way to “eat some W’s” against. Are the Panthers going to be good again this season? Will the improved Bucs sweep the season series like in 2016?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hats , Marcus Mariota hands the ball off to Dion Lewis, who tucks the ball away and accelerates through the middle of the Titans’ offensive line. They get a good push up front, allowing enough room for Lewis to squirt through. It looked as if Lewis was about to break one for a big gain, but as soon as the metaphorical - and redundantly used phrase - door opened, it was slammed shut by Bucs’ safety Chris Conte.Conte absolutely leveled Lewis and the end result was a loud POP! which drew gasps from a crowd of Titan fans over thirty yards away. Sure enough, the first scuffle of this week’s joint practices broke out and everyone from players to coaches to Titans’ General Manager Jon Robinson were on the field attempting to deescalate the situation. “I wasn’t trying to blow him up or anything, I was just trying to fit the run and things happen,” Conte explained. “I wasn’t trying to hurt him or do anything out of line. I was just trying to thud him up like how we practice. Things happen like that, but we also hope we can make some more plays during the game.” One of multiple defenders who stood out for the Bucs this week, Conte is being counted on early and often in camp due to injuries in the secondary. The defensive line has taken some hits as well with injuries to Vita Vea and Mitch Unrein, leaving the vets along the line to carry the team just like Conte. They were up to the task. Jason Pierre-Paul, Kwon Alexander Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hoodie , Conte, and others made play after play during all facets of both practices. Pierre-Paul and Taylor Lewan’s battles were fun enough just to watch on their own, as each player went after the other, battling and jawing to find out who is the superior player of the two, Lewan will be a great test for JPP this weekend Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty ImagesOne player that wasn’t even mentioned on that list was Gerald McCoy. Although he didn’t make many plays during practice, his presence was still felt. He knows what he is capable of - so does the rest of the NFL - and realizes the value in the nuances of the game during the preseason.“My dad always raised me as, don’t try and make plays, do the things it takes to make plays, and that’s just playing technique,” McCoy told me. “That’s doing your job well within the scheme of the defense and that’s all I’m gonna do Saturday. I’ll carry over what we did in practice to the game.”Just like the other veterans on defense, he knows how important these joint practices are to not only break the monotony of training camp, but the fact that it’s one step closer to actual game play that can provide a foundation for the season. “For me Cheap Customized Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jerseys , personally, it was good to go up against a different cadence, a different look. Compared to a game, practice is more of a controlled situation where you can get some good work in,” McCoy said. “You get to see what you need to fix, adjust, and you just kind of stack it, stack it, stack it. And then, you are able to see how it carries over into the game and keep stacking it as you go into the season.” Gerald McCoy is primed for a big year Photo by Mark Brown/Getty ImagesThe Bucs’ front seven is loaded with veterans who tore after Mariota and Blaine Gabbert on both Wednesday and Thursday. The hope is that it’s a sign of things to come, which would be a tremendous improvement to the league’s worst pass-rush a year ago. As mentioned earlier, however White Demar Dotson Jersey , not everything is golden on the defensive side of the ball. Due to some injuries at corner, safety Justin Evans has been working in the slot in nickel formations- while learning the position - and rookie Jordan Whitehead has seen plenty of action, too. For Evans, it’s not a steep learning curve at his new position, but more of an adjustment that simplytakes some time to get used to. “It’s just different,” Evans said when referring to his new position, “I’m used to playing safety, I know all my checks. At nickel, I know most of it too, but it just takes a few reps to fully understand the position. It’s trial and error.”Even though it’s only his second year, Evans already has the mentality of fellow veteran teammates such as JPP. In order to create as many mismatches as possible along the line, the Bucs have been lining him up on the inside in order to bring extra edge rushers when needed and to take advantage of Pierre-Paul’s excellent run defense. Both players are willing to do whatever is needed from them to help the team succeed and in theory , that is excellent news.Right now, the veterans are doing exactly what they need to do, which is make plays and dominate. Let’s see if McCoy and Co. can “stack it” and carry it over into not only Saturday night’s game, but the regular season as well. The Crow’s Nest: Winston in an elite category, 9,000 calories, and Hulkamania Jameis Winston "Second To Only Peyton Manning" - JoeBucsFan.comWant to know why Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht got an extension?VIDEO: JPP/McCoy Blow Up Dotson/Cappa - JoeBucsFan.comOne observing multiple Bucs training camp practices would see that Gerald McCoy and Jason Pierre-Paul have similar taste in music, and there’s lots of beastly bonding going on between the two perennial studs.Bucs’ Noah Spence has gained 35 pounds in the last year – ProFootballTalkThe Buccaneers wanted defensive end Noah Spence to gain weight this offseason. We know the Saints and New York Giants have a history of playing high-scoring games. What else do we know? Probably not enough. To learn more, Christopher Dunnells of SB Nation’s Canal Street Chronicles answers our 5 questions about the Saints.Ed: Obviously Drew Brees is off to a crazy start this season. Is there some type of Kryptonite that could slow him down? No one has found it yet this year.Christopher: I would say there are three things you could try to do to slow down Brees right now:One, put pressure in his face and force him to make poor decisions. Everyone and their momma knows that Brees is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league. If you get edge pressure on Brees but leave a clean pocket otherwise, Brees is great at stepping forward in the pocket to leave a clear window for a pass. If you instead are able to get interior pressure on Brees, you can force Brees to rush his throws and possible force the ball into tighter windows than he’d prefer to Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. Force quick throws and poor decision making, and maybe you can capitalize on mistakes.Another things you should do is to try to keep him off the field. Control the ball and control the clock by leading long and clock-eating drives up and down the field. It’s hard to score points when you’re sitting on the bench as a spectator. But the third and final way to slow him down New York Giants T-Shirt , might be a little controversial. Force Brees to beat you deep. As best you can, eliminate all of his underneath throws and check down routes. At this point in his career, Brees’s deep ball has lost a fair amount of accuracy. He is in the bottom third in the league in average distance his passes travel in the air. Don’t look at the passing yards, as a lot of that is YAC from Thomas and Kamara. When he’s tried to drop bombs to Ted Ginn Jr. and others on deep routes, he has overthrown or underthrown the majority of those passes. Right now, Brees is finding a lot of his success in the short and intermediate passing game. If you eliminate those routes, you eliminate a large chunk of Sean Payton’s current playbook.Ed: Yes or no. Brees gets the 419 passing yards he needs on Sunday to become the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards?Christopher: That’s the question, isn’t it?I’m going to say “no,” but for completely selfish reasons. I plan to be in the Super Dome for the Week 5 Monday Night Football matchup against the Washington Redskins, so I want it to happen in front of the New Orleans faithful. That being said, I think “no” is probably the safe bet. Granted, when these two teams matched up in 2015, Brees threw for over 500 passing yards, so if that were to happen again, he might break the record in the third quarter Sunday afternoon. But Brees had an otherwise great showing against the Atlanta Falcons last week in a fairly high-scoring affair, and “only” threw for 396 yards. Ed: The Saints are struggling in the secondary and Patrick Robinson is out for the year. How concerned are you about New Orleans’ ability to handle the Giants’ play-makers?Christopher: It absolutely terrifies me.Much ado has been made about the Saints being No. 1 ranked against the rush through the season’s first three weeks. But that is primarily a result of: 1) a trio of mediocre running backs they’ve faced, and 2) opposing offenses preferring to attack the Saints through the air. This week will be the Saints first real test against an elite level running back, so if they are forced to make adjustments by putting another body in the box to defend the run, the Saints secondary could be in for an even longer day than expected. The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Marshon Lattimore has seemingly improved each week after an abysmal Week 1 showing, but he’s going to have his hands full with Odell Beckham Jr. Odell will still get his New York Giants Hats , but the Giant I’d be watching to have a big day is Sterling Shepard. Whoever is playing the No. 2 cornerback position opposite Lattimore has struggled mightily this season. It was Ken Crawley to start the year. Crawley was benched before Week 3 for PJ Williams, and Williams was benched midway through Week 3 to try Ken Crawley again. The loss of Robinson means the Saints are left with no choice but to start both Crawley and Williams at cornerback, with Williams lining up against the slot, but the Giants missing Evan Engram should help Williams out a little. Crawley on the outside against Shepard gives me nightmares again already.Ed: If you could take one player off the Giants’ roster NOT NAMED Beckham or Barkley and put him in the Saints’ lineup, who would it be? Why?Christopher: It would likely have to be Janoris Jenkins right now.See answer to No. 3 above.Ed: Tell me about a couple of Saints’ players we might not know much about who could impact Sunday’s game?Christopher: Crawley and Williams are likely to make an impact on Sunday’s game, but not for any good reasons for the Saints. If you hear their name on the broadcast, it’s probably because they’re getting roasted like a Thanksgiving turkey. But let’s go instead with Taysom Hill. The quarterback, tight end, wide receiver, return man, holder, gunner, special teamer, disc jockey, firefighter, elementary school teacher, and tire salesman. OK, I might have gotten a little carried away there at the end, but seriously, what can’t this kid do?In 2017 New York Giants Hoodie , the Saints were absolutely terrible defending kickoffs. I remember hearing before a game late in the season that the Saints third-string QB was active for the game, and I was (rightfully so) incredibly confused. Lo and behold it’s Taysom Hill, he of the sub-4.4 speed and elite athleticism, and Taysom made tackle after tackle inside the opponent’s 25-yard line.Taysom has evolved now to be a Swiss Army Knife player in the Sean Payton offense. He’s the Saints primary kickoff return specialist right now, and with his size, strength, and speed, he’s just itching to take a kick to the house. He’s also the Saints holder for field goals and the upback blocker for punts, so yo know Sean is just looking for an excuse to call a trick play. But he’s also a wildcard when he gets into the offensive huddle. I can count two separate times by two different opponents where the mere presence of Taysom Hill in the offensive formation has forced the other side to burn a time out. When Taysom is in the huddle, you have no idea where he’ll line up. He’s lined up at tight end, wide receiver, and quarterback (even with Drew Brees on the field as well). He’s run the read-option multiple times this season already, converting first downs (including one long run that could have gone all the way but for a late horse collar tackle) each time he’s carried the ball. Is Taysom going to run the ball as a quarterback? Run a jet sweep as a receiver? Throw a pass? Catch a pass? Tuck the ball and run? Will he line up as a quarterback, half back, tight end, or wide receiver? Who knows? But when Taysom Hill runs out on the field, you can feel the entire Saints sideline hold their breath for whatever electric play is about to happen.

Aldrick Rosas Jersey , Odell Beckham get “Kudos,” Ereck Flowers earns “Wet Willie” There are no consolation prizes in the NFL. The New York Giants talked bravely after Sunday’s 20-15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars about the good things they could take from their season opener.Still, this was a loss. In a game that was always within their grasp. At home. When they held the Jacksonville offense scoreless in the second half, and to 13 points overall. It’s a game they coulda/woulda/shoulda won had they just made a few more plays — a point coach Pat Shurmur was eager to make after the game. “That’s the margin we deal with,” he said.Problem is, winning teams make those plays. Teams that go home at the end of the season without playoff berths don’t. Sunday was an opportunity lost for the Giants. With that said, let’s get to the “Kudos & Wet Willies.”Kudos to ...Saquon Barkley — Not a bad day’s work when your first NFL appearance ends with All-Pro defensive end Calais Campbell saying you “might one day be a Hall of Famer.”Barkley showed why the Giants drafted him with an incredible 68-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, breaking two tackles at the line of scrimmage and a third at the sideline to turn what looked like a sure Jacksonville victory into a game the Giants had a chance to win. “You feel like you’re doing a good job, you’ve got a lot of population to the football, you got a lot of people trying to bring him down,” said Jacksonville coach Doug Marrone. “Then all of a sudden, bam!”You get the idea after Sunday that Marrone won’t be the only coach wondering what Barkley just did to his team.Odell Beckham Jr. — Eleven receptions in 15 targets for 111 yards. Not a bad way to return to action. Beckham surpassed Anquan Boldin’s record of 314 catches in 50 games to become the NFL leader in receptions through the first 50 games of a career. In 48 games, he now has 324. The only thing missing Sunday was a game-changing explosive play. We saw enough Sunday to know, though, that those will come.Damon Harrison — The game’s best run-stuffing interior lineman came through with a tackle for loss on Jacksonville’s first play. He ended up with six tackles and more than held his own.Eli Apple — The third-year corner was challenged deep by Blake Bortles twice, and knocked away both passes. The Giants need Apple to play solid football Youth Patrick Omameh Jersey , and on Sunday he was up to the task.Aldrick Rosas — The second-year placekicker got his season off to a good start, going 3-for-3 on field goals, the longest of which was a 44-yarder. He also got 3 touchbacks on 5 kickoffs.Janoris Jenkins — Gave up a 34-yard completion to Keelan Cole on the Jaguars’ first pass of the game. Other than that, Jackrabbit was outstanding. When Blake Bortles went back to that well later in the first quarter on a pass for Donte Moncrief, Jenkins tip-toed along the sideline for a pick. He defended 2 passes. He was a force against the run and ended up with 7 tackles. He played a lot like the 2016 version of Jenkins, a version that was really, really good.Wet Willies to ...Ereck Flowers — We will get to the rest of the offensive line in a minute, but Flowers deserves a special category all his own. Maybe he should Maybe the fourth-year offensive tackle should get the “not so super secret double-fisted Wet Willie.” Flowers started his season with a penalty. Not just any penalty — a tripping penalty. Two plays later he negated a 34-yard pass by Manning with a holding penalty that occurred so close to the end zone, where it would have been a safety, that Jacksonville challenged. Flowers gave up a sack. He was beaten soundly on the play that turned into an Eli Manning pick 6, forcing the quarterback to move and opening up an opportunity for Jaguars defensive tackle Abry Jones to tip the pass.We will talk more about this in Tuesday’s ‘Valentine’s Views,’ but Flowers also blew out of the locker room without talking to reporters, leaving the rest of the Giants offensive linemen to stand at their lockers and talk about him.Offensive line as a whole — Nate Solder had a holding penalty. Will Hernandez have up a sack. Patrick Omameh was the blocker when Abry Jones got his hands up to deflect a Manning pass and create the fateful pick 6. Excepting the Barkley heroics, the Giants barely averaged 2 yards per carry. They couldn’t get 2 yards on a fourth down run when they needed it.Let’s be real. Manning was right when he said after the game that Jacksonville “might be the most talented defense and front four we go against all season.” Still, constant pressure on Manning. Six runs for zero or negative yards. Too many penalties (two on Flowers, one on Solder). The biggest fear with the Giant offense is that the line won’t play well enough for the play-making weapons they have to be used to their fullest potential. That was the case on Sunday. Evan Engram — Drops. Drops. Drops. Drops. Drops. The second-year player led all tight ends with 14 of them last season. He struggled with them in training camp and the preseason. He struggled with them again Sunday. Wide open Aldrick Rosas Jersey , Engram dropped a pass that would have gone for at least a 15-yard gain. There was also a deep ball down the right sideline that appeared catchable, and perhaps one more. Engram told the New York Post that “I pretty much had three drops.”Here’s the thing. He has talked about those drops a lot, he has worked at fixing the problem, but it’s not going away. Engram’s value to the Giants is his ability to create mismatches as a receiver. If they can’t trust him to catch the ball that value is severely diminished.Kaelin Clay — Three punt returns for just 4 yards. A muffed punt with the Giants trailing by 5 points and less than a minute to go that took away any chance for last-second heroics. So, how is it that Clay is an upgrade from Hunter Sharp or Kalif Raymond? He might be, but he sure didn’t get off to a good start in trying to prove it.Brad Penner-USA TODAY SportsThoughts on Pat Shurmur’s debut I’m not assigning the coach a “Kudo” or a “Wet Willie.” And I really hate questioning play calls. My belief is a good play call is one that works, no matter whether it makes sense or not. A bad play? Any play call that doesn’t work. That said, there were a couple of questionable play calls by Shurmur in this one. Handing the ball to Barkley up the middle on fourth-and-2, against a tremendous defense and with an offensive line that wasn’t getting the job done is questionable. So, too, is running a reverse to Beckham on third-and-goal from the Jacksonville 8-yard line. That play lost a yard, and was never going to work. Gotta throw the ball in that spot. Since it didn’t work, I guess we can also question running the ball with Barkley on the failed two-point conversion attempt.Shurmur chose not to challenge a spot in the fourth quarter when Barkley was rules just short of a first down after catching a pass on third-and-five. The Giants punted. The coach also chose not to use Beckham to return a punt in the final minute, when Kaelin Clay fumbled away the Giants’ last chance.Shurmur has done a terrific job. I loved how he ran the Giants’ spring practices. How he has built relationships with players. How he ran training camp and the preseason. He goes out of his way to try and relate to the media. I’m not sure I loved how he managed Sunday’s game.Giants news, 8/27: Jon Halapio gains a job but loses a friend, more news Good morning Authentic Rhett Ellison Jersey , New York Giants fans! Let’s get right to the headlines for your Monday morning.Jon Halapio: “Sucks to see my friend go”It has been obvious for months now that Jon Halapio would be the Giants starting center. Sunday’s trade of Brett Jones to the Minnesota Vikings served to reiterate that. It also left Halapio without one of his best friends, a player who helped him acclimate to the center position.“I’m happy for him, it sucks to see my friend go. That’s the tough part about this business, you build relationships like this, but you know that sometimes it doesn’t go that way for us to be together forever, it’s not a marriage,” Halapio said. “I’m happy for him, it’s closer to home for him and he gets an opportunity to go out there and play and display his talents and what he brings to the game, he’s a good player.”Halapio said his approach is to still work as though he is competing for the job.“It still doesn’t cross my mind. I’m still competing like I’m not the starter,” Halapio said. “I’m just going to keep approaching it that way until Week 1 and focus on trying to get everyone on the same page and get this running game going. Just try to improve one day at a time.Jonathan Stewart and his “goldfish memory”Coach Pat Shurmur expressed confidence over the weekend that Jonathan Stewart’s rough preseason is not an indication that the 31-year-old can no longer succeed at the NFL level.Stewart is trying not to focus on his lack of preseason production.“I think this is a time, obviously, where you have an opportunity to work on your craft whether it’s practice, preseason games. Getting to gel with the first teams, whatever teams you’re a part of, making the most of your opportunities,” Stewart said. “Also learn how not to dwell on certain things. At the end of day Youth Kerry Wynn Jersey , goldfish memory because once something bad goes wrong, you have to learn how to bounce back and more forward to the next play because time is going to continue to tick.”He called his fumble Friday “a minor error, major mess up.”Despite the lack of production (10 preseason carries, -5 yards, a long run of 4 yards) Stewart said his summer has “been good.”“A lot of my practice reps, a lot of things that I’ve been putting out on film for preseason, I felt like I’ve been doing everything I’ve supposed to have been doing,” he said.Around the Inter-GoogleTucker: I can tell you first-hand why changing the kickoff rule was necessary – The AthleticThe new kickoff rules may be frustrating to some, but the changes need to be made, because the play ends careers. New York Giants T-Shirt , Basile waived; RB Pressley, LB Long added [UPDATED 4:30 p.m.] The Giants also made a second pair of moves on Monday. The waived safety Mike Basile, a rookie undrafted free agent just signed two weeks ago, and added linebacker Warren Long.Long, 5-foot-11 and 212 pounds, joined the Seattle Seahawks on May 4 as an undrafted rookie from Northwestern. He was waived on Aug. 11. Long had two solo tackles in Seattle’s preseason opener vs. Indianapolis. Long was a running back his first three seasons (2013-15) at Northwestern. He was injured on his first carry in 2016, and missed the rest of the season. The following offseason New York Giants Hats , he became a linebacker. Playing primarily as a backup and special teamer, Long had 21 tackles (14 solo), three tackles for losses and 1.0 sack. The New York Giants have reportedly waived linebacker Thurston Armbrister with an injury designation. Armbrister has been dealing with a hamstring injury since early in training camp and hasn’t practiced since the beginning of August. With small injuries piling up elsewhere on the roster, the team couldn’t afford to wait any longer for Armbrister to get back on the field. After waiving Armbrister, the team immediately put the open roster spot to use, signing running back Jhurell Pressley. Pressley was originally signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2016, and has bounced around the league since. He has spent time on the Vikings New York Giants Hoodie , Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, and Jacksonville Jaguars since coming in to the league. Pressley was regarded as a productive and athletic “change of pace” running back coming out of college, with remarkable speed and quickness. Pressley recorded 1,990 yards (7.85 yards per carry) and 23 touchdowns over his last two seasons at New Mexico, and was timed at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 6.92 in the 3-cone drill and 4.06 in the short shuttle at New Mexico’s pro day. The Giants are short on running backs with Saquon Barkley nursing a strained hamstring and Jalen Simmons in the concussion protocol. The team used receiver Kalif Raymond as a running back in practice Sunday afternoon Customized New York Giants Jerseys , so adding a running back isn’t a surprising move. We’ll have to see if Pressley can capitalize on his opportunity.Giants injury report, 9/26: Olivier Vernon limited, but practices for first time this season Olivier Vernon, out all season due to a high ankle sprain, was a limited practice participant on Wednesday for the New York Giants. That leads to optimism that Vernon could play for the first time this Sunday when the Giants face the New Orleans Saints.Eli Apple (groin) did not practice. Damon Harrison did not practice, but this is believed to be more of a rest day than an injury concern for the big defensive tackle. The Giants need all the defensive help they can muster as they get ready to face the prolific New Orleans offense. Led by Drew Brees, the Saints are second in the league in scoring at more than 34 points per game.Vernon , who suffered his injury midway through the preseason, has yet to play in a regular-season game. Apple missed the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans. We’re going to be checking in on DeForest Buckner frequently for his Defensive Player of the Year campaign , and Sunday’s stop wasn’t the most desirable. Buckner only managed a single sack against what on paper should be an awful Detroit Lions defensive line. However, it’s not how you start this campaign trail, it’s how you finish. Show me the sack:This thing of beauty puts Buckner at 3.5 sacks for the season. In 2017 alone, all of 2017, Buckner only got three of those. So this is progress. He’s going to need a lot more than one sack a game if he’s going to get that DPOY he desires, but maybe he won’t get left off lists as one of the best in the league. And with moves like this, the sacks will come.Oh, but there’s more. Now 49ers Richard Sherman Jersey , on this campaign, sacks do matter, but there’s other little things to get Buckner the respect he rightly deserves. It’s not going to just be getting to an opposing team’s signal caller, but how he pulls a runner back. Roll it: If only the rest of his line could do this. To round out this post of DeForest Buckner gloss, we of course need to bring up his car jacking of LeGarrette Blount. Fooch already went into detail about this yesterday, but it’s worth showing again. Ok, that last one isn’ t going to get Buckner much of anything, but it’s never going to get old watching. Especially when Blount got himself ejected out of frustration a while later. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford took off down the sideline and Elijah Lee was happy to knock him out of bounds. Blount didn’t exactly like that and knocked Lee off his feet Cheap Dante Pettis Jersey , getting tossed in the process. The one concern is the Detroit Lions offensive line isn’t very good. At all. That said, Buckner has already gone above his sack total in 2017 and is making a strong case for All Pro.Maybe he doesn’t get the DPOY nod, but we’re not stopping this campaign until he gets the respect he deserves.49ers fear Jimmy Garoppolo suffered torn ACL, C.J. Beathard will take over as starting QB The San Francisco 49ers season took a big swing on one player. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the trainers think it is a torn ACL. Garoppolo will undergo an MRI on Monday when the team returns to Santa Clara, at which point they will know for sure.Whatever the injury ends up officially being, Garoppolo is out indefinitely, and that means the backup quarterback gets the call. C.J. Beathard takes over as the starting quarterback 49ers Alfred Morris Jersey , and Shanahan said the plan is to promote Nick Mullens from the practice squad to serve as his backup. This is not Beathard’s first run as starting quarterback. The 49ers drafted him out of Iowa last year in the third round, and he replaced Brian Hoyer midway through the season. Beathard eventually lost his job Garoppolo, but he made five starts (plus the second half against Washington) before then. In that run, he completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 1,430 yards, with four touchdowns and six interceptions.Beathard met with the media following the game and said he was ready to go. He met with Garoppolo and told the injured QB he is praying for him. Garoppolo told him, “Lead these guys.”Fooch’s update: Kyle Shanahan was asked about C.J. Beathard taking over as starter and offered a vote of confidence —

The 2018 NFL season is officially in full swing , which means regular season betting is back. I’m back for another year of picks in the Westgate SuperContest. SB Nation’s partners over at Odds Shark are sponsoring my entry again. The contest requires selecting 5 games each week and picking them against the spread. I finished 2-2-1 in Week 6, which brings me to 13-10-1 for the season. Overall for last week I scuffled along at 8-6-1.The San Francisco 49ers are a 9.5 point underdog on Monday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers. Some sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark are offering 10.5 points, but for the most part it’s 9.5 — including at the SuperContest. If the line had been 10 or higher I might have been tempted by the 49ers, but without getting that needed hook, I’m staying away from this one. The 49ers are scuffling, but Green Bay has not been overly impressive this season. I could see a close game, I could see a Packers blowout — it’s a wide open one and I’m just not comfortable picking either way. Here are my five SuperContest picks for Week 6.VIKINGS (-10) over CardinalsWASHINGTON (-1) over PanthersBuccaneers (+3.5) over FALCONSBRONCOS (+6.5) over RamsTITANS (+2.5) over RavensI don’t normally like taking a double digit favorite, but after last week’s game, I think it is reasonable to bet against Arizona in Minnesota. If the 49ers don’t turn the ball over five times Womens Arik Armstead Jersey , I think they probably win that game by double digits. Kirk Cousins is a much better quarterback than C.J. Beathard, he’s got some big-time weapons in the passing game, and he’s backed by a stout Vikings defense. The Cardinals could surprise them, particularly with Minnesota coming off a close road win over the Eagles, but I really think this is a game the Vikings win going away.I stuck with home teams for the most part. The one road team is the Bucs in the return of Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback. He’s had success against Atlanta, and if O.J. Howard plays, they could do some damage against a banged up Falcons defense. The Bucs are a tough team to figure out given the transition at quarterback, but I like them here. The Rams are on a roll, but if Denver is going to keep this close Youth Mike Person Jersey , this is the ideal situation. The Broncos have played well at home, including nearly upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs two weeks ago. Add in cold weather with a chance of snow, and I’m ready to take the Broncos with the cover.I went 8-6-1 overall in Week 5. Here are all my picks for Week 6:GIANTS vs. Eagles (-3): Eagles — LOSSVIKINGS vs. Cardinals (+10): VikingsBROWNS vs. Chargers (-1): BrownsDOLPHINS vs. Bears (-3): DolphinsWASHINGTON vs. Panthers (+1): WashingtonJETS vs. Colts (+2.5): JetsBENGALS vs. Steelers (+2.5): SteelersFALCONS vs. Buccaneers (+3.5): BuccaneersSeahawks vs. Raiders (+3 — London): SeahawksTEXANS vs. Bills (+9.5): BillsBRONCOS vs. Rams (-6.5): BroncosCOWBOYS vs. Jaguars (-3): CowboysTITANS vs. Ravens (-2.5): TitansPATRIOTS vs. Chiefs (+3.5): PatriotsPACKERS vs. 49ers (+9.5): Packers With quarterbacks racking up passing yards at a record pace, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman criticized the league for rules that he says unfairly favor offenses. The four-time Pro Bowler said defenses are at a severe disadvantage given the rules geared toward protecting quarterbacks."This is what the league wanted though. They wanted record passing numbers," Sherman said. "You can't touch (the quarterback). You can't tackle him. You can't hit him high. You can't hit him low. You can't knock him down to the ground hard."You can't hit a receiver high. You can't hit him low. You can't push him, you can barely press him. It's making it really difficult on teams to combat it because every rule in the book is designed to make sure you don't get them stopped."There's no debating the video game-like numbers being posted. Through the first four weeks, the totals for points scored (3,030), touchdowns (344) and touchdown passes (228) are all the highest in NFL history. The frequency of roughing-the-passer penalties has been criticized."The roughing (penalty) is the biggest one right now ," Sherman said. "But most of the tackling rules have changed. They're just trying to make it impossible for guys to play defense."The league's goal is to reduce the injuries to the starting quarterbacks. This affected the 49ers as Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his knee against Kansas City on Sept. 23. He was hurt scrambling to the sideline."My suggestion is to put flags on the quarterbacks," Sherman said jokingly. "If you don't want them touched, don't want them getting knocked down. These D-ends and D-tackles and linebackers have long arms. They'll be able to snatch these flags off without even having to touch these guys half the time."Sherman hopes to get back on the field. After sitting out Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers because of a strained left calf, the veteran practiced in limited fashion Thursday and wouldn't rule himself out for Sunday's home game against Arizona. After Sherman was injured in Week 3 against Kansas City, San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said the expectation was that Sherman likely would miss "a couple" games. The 49ers have started Jimmie Ward in Sherman's place, although Greg Mabin rotated in at cornerback with both Ward and Ahkello Witherspoon against the Chargers. Mabin forced a fumble and earned praise from the coaching staff. He showed "great physicality, competitive toughness, communication skills," defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said. "He did play very well in the game."Saleh said Mabin would rotate in at cornerback again. If Sherman can go Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey , that will affect things one way or another.NOTES: Left tackle Joe Staley (knee) did not practice Thursday. But two of the 49ers other starting offensive linemen battling knee injuries, center Weston Richburg and right tackle Mike McGlinchey, practiced in limited fashion. Running back Matt Breida (shoulder) and receiver Marquise Goodwin (quadriceps, hamstring) also were limited. ... The starting safety tandem of Adrian Colbert (hip) and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) participated fully as did running back Alfred Morris (knee).

The block lasted for what it seemed like an eternity to those of us just watching. It must have felt even longer for Pierre Gar莽on who was locked up with Lions DB Nevin Lawson for at least half of Matt Breida’s 66-yard touchdown run. Gar莽on has always prided himself on being a complete player San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt , hence a blocker, but he did remark that this ranked as one of the best blocks of his football career: Gar莽on is known as one of the bigger trash talkers in the league but he says there wasn’t much talking as the block went on. He does admit to doing his share of talking throughout a game, as he says that it makes him play harder. He also sees that his teammates feed off it it and it gets everyone energized. It has clearly had an effect on how Breida sees him: Gar莽on remained humble about the block, saying he was just “happy to be a part of it.” He felt like Breida had been close to breaking one for a while and saw him get open. He recalled staying with Lawson as long as the play was live, trying not to get a holding call. He knew he had the last guy left who could prevent the score and could hear “excitement and the guys running behind” him. Gar莽on admitted he didn’t know exactly where Breida was behind him and was just hoping that he could make a move to cut around to get into the end zone.Gar莽on caught all four of his targets for 57 yards facing the Lions and Kyle Shanahan revealed in hind sight that he should gone to him more. He added that Gar莽on did the best at beating the tight man coverage that the Lions defense was playing against them. Gar莽onsaid that targets don’t matter to him, you go into the game with a plan and depending on what you opponent gives you, the game could turn out completely different.Reintroducing C.J. Beathard Jimmy Garoppolo is out with a torn ACL San Francisco 49ers Hats , which means now the San Francisco 49ers will turn to the backup, C.J. Beathard. If you’re new to the program, you might not have had a chance to see Beathard’s limited action in 2017, or the 49ers were so bad B.G.(Before-Garoppolo) you repressed it. Either way, it’s probably a good idea to break down the new signal caller for the 49ers in 2018. Beathard was drafted in the third round of the2017 NFL draft. The pick drew criticism due to Beathard being seen as a sixth or seventh round pick, not a third. The positives were his experience in a pro-style offense at Iowa. Still, this was a guy labeled as a career backup and nothing more. His preseason displayed some optimism. If an NFL veteran had the same preseason it wouldn’t have been anything to write home about San Francisco 49ers Hoodie , but as a rookie he was able to pick up on some busted coverages and notch some touchdowns. He saw his first NFL regular-season action in Week 6 of 2017, coming in for an inefficient Brian Hoyer and starting an additional five games, winning only one. His time as a starter concluded with a huge hit in the final minutes of the Seattle Seahawks, which resulted in Garoppolo taking the reins of the offense. His final totals for his stint was a 54.9 completion percentage, 1,430 yards passing, and four touchdowns to six interceptions. Beathard’s preseason for 2018 didn’t display the jumps one would hope from year one to year two. Gone were the impressive rookie moments from his 2017 preseason that made the 49ers think he could be a decent pick with some development. His passes were inaccurate; getting tipped frequently Customized San Francisco 49ers Jerseys , and he still held onto the ball longer than most would like. 49ers fans can hope that preseason was a misnomer, because Beathard is taking over again. He now has a year of experience in Kyle Shanahan’s system and some starting experience in the NFL. While lackluster last year, that experience does nothing but help him now as he isn’t fed to the wolves this time around. His sack totals (19) from last year may go down now that the 49ers offensive line is improved and the talent around him has had a slight increase thanks to the drafting of Dante Pettis and the return of Pierre Gar莽on. This is in no way an ideal situation for the 2018 season, but while Beathard may not offer much, he still is better than other options. Did you see how Josh Rosen played?

OAKLAND D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey Elite , Calif. (AP) — Bob Melvin might have a little better understanding of the anxiety other teams feel when his Oakland Athletics come roaring back in the late innings.Seattle nearly did it to the A’s. These AL West rivals are among the best at staying in games until the very end despite a big deficit.Jed Lowrie drove in four runs to back Sean Manaea, and the A’s held off a late Seattle rally to beat the Mariners 7-6 on Monday night in a matchup of playoff contenders.“We’ve done that a few times before,” Melvin said of his club’s comebacks. “The other end of it doesn’t feel so great. … They have a deep lineup and obviously with their record in close games there’s no quit in them as well.”Manaea (11-8) pitched into the eighth and bounced back from a season-low 2 2/3 innings against the Dodgers his last time out.Second-place Oakland moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the Mariners, who had momentum coming off a four-game sweep at first-place and defending World Series champion Houston. Seattle had won six of eight. The idle Astros had their lead trimmed to two games over the A’s.“It’s really fun right now. Coming out with a strong effort and you see the crowd getting into it, I was really taking my time and appreciating everything,” Manaea said. “You can definitely feel it, feel it everywhere. Every game means something and that’s how we’re playing.”Jean Segura and Nelson Cruz hit consecutive RBI singles with two outs in the eighth, and the Mariners — who like the A’s have a knack for late-inning rallies — nearly pulled off a comeback. Seattle loaded the bases with none out in the ninth on three walks by Jeurys Familia before Blake Treinen relieved and allowed a run on a wild pitch and Mitch Haniger’s two-run single before closing it out for his 31st save. Cruz struck out swinging to end it with runners on first and second.Matt Chapman hit a two-run double in the sixth , his third double of the game. That matched the Oakland record that he last accomplished on June 12 against Houston.Manaea gave up two runs and five hits in 7 2/3 innings as the A’s won for the fourth time in five games and moved a season-high 23 games above .500 (71-48). The left-hander faced the minimum through three despite allowing a baserunner in each of the initial two innings — getting a caught stealing in the first and double play in the second. The Mariners challenged Chapman’s double in the third while Chapman was checked by athletic trainer Nick Paparesta following a headfirst slide that tore his batting glove. The call stood after review, and Lowrie doubled down the left-field line moments later.Lowrie hit RBI singles in the first and sixth innings. Only an announced crowd of 10,400 fans were on hand to see his productive night.Seattle lefty Marco Gonzales (12-8) allowed four runs and eight hits over five innings, struck out four and walked three. Gonzales lost his third straight start after winning five in a row from June 29-July 29.CANO’S RETURNSeattle’s Robinson Cano is scheduled to return Tuesday from his 80-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug agreement. The All-Star second baseman was suspended May 15 after he tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic that can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs. He tuned up with Class A Everett and Triple-A Tacoma.Manager Scott Servais plans to use Cano — who is ineligible for the postseason if Seattle makes the playoffs — around the infield. Servais will have a sit-down with Cano once the infielder arrives in Oakland to stress not trying to do too much.“We need to be smart in breaking him in,” Servais said. “He wants to get going, he wants to contribute right away. He’s missed playing, he’s missed his teammates and being around this whole thing. I know he wants to come in and do a lot. But again small little things.”TRAINER’S ROOMMariners: Already lost for the season Steven Wright Jersey , RHP reliever Sam Tuivailala will have surgery on his strained right Achilles tendon, and it’s unclear whether he will be recovered in time for spring training. He was hurt last Wednesday during a rundown against Texas. He was acquired from St. Louis ahead of the trade deadline. … RHP Dan Altavilla (UCL sprain in pitching elbow) will throw another live batting practice session soon then likely begin pitching in minor league games within a week. … RHP Juan Nicasio had a second opinion on his inflamed right knee and is back playing catch.Athletics: RF Matt Joyce is hitting soft toss and off a tee in the cage and should be hitting on the field sometime this week. … RHP Jharel Cotton (Tommy John surgery), RHP Andrew Triggs (nerve irritation in pitching arm) and RHP Paul Blackburn (elbow tendinitis) all played catch — the first time for Cotton and Blackburn. Manager Bob Melvin is optimistic Blackburn and Triggs will pitch again this year once rosters expand Sept. 1.UP NEXTSeattle LHP James Paxton (10-5, 3.63 ERA) looks to win his second straight start when he opposes RHP Mike Fiers (7-6, 3.40), making his second start since the A’s acquired him from the Tigers last week. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are threatening to turn a tight NL East race into a runaway finish.Sean Newcomb pitched six strong innings, Ozzie Albies sparked the offense with two extra-base hits and Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Monday night. The Braves moved five games ahead of Philadelphia atop the NL East and reduced their magic number to 15 with their fourth win in five games. The Giants lost their ninth straight, matching their worst skid since 2006.Albies was 2 for 4 with a double , a triple, an RBI and two runs. Kurt Suzuki was 3 for 3, including a double leading off a two-run ninth inning.Albies scored the go-ahead run in the seventh. He led off with a double against starter Dereck Rodriguez (6-3) and was awarded third when center fielder Gorkys Hernandez’s throw trying to catch Albies after a wide turn at first was off the mark. Hernandez was charged with an error.“Always aggressive,” Albies said. “He throws behind me, I’m going.”Albies scored on Dansby Swanson’s sacrifice fly that made it 2-1.Albies had an RBI triple and scored a run in the ninth.“He’s an aggressive kid,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “He’s always looking to advance to the next base, that’s for sure.”Newcomb (12-8) allowed a run on three hits. He struck out eight and walked none.“I was just attacking the hitters the whole time, trying to make them uncomfortable David Price Jersey ,” Newcomb said.Braves closer A.J. Minter pitched a scoreless ninth for his 14th save.Rodriguez gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings.“I asked him to go back out for the seventh. I felt good regardless of pitches,” Rodriguez said. “I thought I could pitch a pretty good inning. I feel strong. I want to keep going out there.“I like playing with old school managers. It’s the game I learned, bunting guys over to second, and grew up watching. Having Bochy as a manger and him having confidence in me is awesome.”The 26-year-old rookie joined some elite company.Rodriguez became one of just two pitchers to allow two or fewer runs over six-plus innings 13 times in their first 16 career starts. The other is former Montreal Expos pitcher Steve Rogers, per to Stats, LLC.The only other Giant to allow two or fewer runs in 13 of their first 16 starts in a season is Juan Marichal (1965).NOTABLEBraves OF Ronald Acuna Jr. was among the first eight players named to represent Major League Baseball in the 2018 All-Star Tour with Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan , which opens Nov. 7 at the Tokyo Dome. … Acuna’s 25th home run on Sunday moved him into a three-way tie fifth place on the career list for players under 21 with Hall of Famers Eddie Matthews (1952) and Orlando Cepeda (1958).TRAINER’S ROOMBraves: RHP Arodys Vizcaino (right shoulder inflammation) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday for the first time in five days. It took a historic marathon of a National League Wild Card Game Kent Tekulve Jersey , but the Colorado Rockies' dreams of a first World Series title are still alive.Colorado defeated the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in a 13-inning showdown Tuesday at Wrigley Field. It was the longest win-or-go-home playoff game in MLB history, and it prevented the Cubs from reaching their fourth straight National League Championship Series.Tony Wolters, who did not start the game, delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 13th, and Scott Oberg closed the door on the North Siders in the bottom of the frame. Rockies Bats Must Find Road Magic for World Series RunColorado's offensive struggles on the road were a primary talking point entering the playoffs, for good reason.According, the Rockies led MLB in OPS at home but were an ugly 27thawayfrom Coors Field. Those issues were on full display during Monday's National League West tiebreaker loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers,as they didn't score until the ninth inning, and they looked to rear their ugly head again Tuesday when Nolan Arenado's sacrifice fly in the first inning was their only run until the 13th.However, October often comes down to unexpected heroes, as Colorado can now attest.ESPN espnBIGGEST HIT OF HIS CAREER!Tony Wolters comes up CLUTCH to give the Rockies the lead. Tony Wolters, two-strike single, Rockies up 2-1.With two outs and nobody on base, Trevor Story and Gerardo Parra singled before Wolters drove home the winner. While Story is a notable name, Parra and Wolters were not exactly the expected heroes in a lineup featuring Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu, Carlos Gonzalez and Ian Desmond. The Rockies will need that type of October magic to deliver a championship to Colorado. Otherwise, their pitchers will need to be brilliant, like starter Kyle Freeland was against the Cubs with 6.2 scoreless innings and six strikeouts. The Rockies' road issues aren't going to disappear overnight , but a timely hit in clutch moments can be the difference between an early exit and a deep postseason run.Toothless Cubs Must Find Offensive Answers Next SeasonJon Lester deserved better. The three-time World Series champion entered Tuesday's contest with a 2.55 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 25 playoff appearances, and he threw another masterpiece, allowing one run, four hits and one walk while striking out nine in six brilliant innings. The Cubs must find offensive answers this offseason, whether it is signing Bryce Harper, changing some of the coaching staff, adding lower-profile but impactful bats or rehabbing Kris Bryant after he dealt with injuries throughout the season.Otherwise, they won't be World Series contenders in 2019.Brewers Bullpen vs. Rockies Starters Will Determine NLDSThe battle within the battle in the Division Series between the Rockies and Brewers will be which team can beat the other's strength.Milwaukee can build an early lead with Christian Yelich, Lorenzo Cain and the rest of the offense and then drastically shorten contests with a dominant bullpen featuring the likes of Josh Hader, Joakim Soria, Corey Knebel and Jeremy Jeffress. All manager Craig Counsell needs is four or five effective innings from the starters, and the bullpen can do the rest. That was the blueprint the Brewers used to beat the Cubs in Monday's divisional tiebreaker game when Jhoulys Chacin allowed one run in 5.2 innings before the bullpen slammed the door.On the other side Dave Parker Jersey , Freeland and German Marquez form a daunting one-two punch of starting pitchers who can dictate the series with three starts between them. We have to figure out a way to make that not happen. There are a lot of things we can do to help. If it is a limitation, and it is certainly pointing in that direction, or it could be, we can’t ignore it. We are going to figure out the best solution.”The Diamondbacks lost to Seattle 4-2 in 10 innings in the second game of the series between playoff contenders Saturday and fell into a tie with Colorado for first place in the NL West. They will send right-hander Zack Greinke (12-8, 3.06) to oppose Mariners right-hander Mike Leake (8-7, 3.90) in the rubber final game Sunday. The Mariners won their first series since sweeping four in Houston from Aug. 9-12, helped by another homer from Mitch Haniger, who has two in the series and a career-high 22 this season.“I think it is going to be a fight,” Haniger said of the AL West race. “We have a really good team here, and I think we are getting hot at the right time.”Greinke is 0-3 in his last four starts Josh Harrison Jersey , breaking a seven-game winning streak, although the Diamondbacks offensive support has been complicit in the recent slump. Three of his last four starts were quality starts, but the offense scored only seven runs in those four when he was on the mound.Still, Greinke is one of three double-digit winners on the D-backs’ staff (only Colorado has as many) and ranks seventh in the league in ERA. He is fifth in the NL with 165 strikeouts and sixth with a 1.05 WHIP.“I know Patrick (Corbin) has had a great year as well, but Zack has been the main guy for all of us to jump on board with him,” Lovullo said. “It starts with fastball command. It starts with a game plan, attacking zones. Preparation. Any time he starts a game, we know we are in the game.”Greinke’s strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.1:1 is third in the league behind Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. Greinke has made 16 quality starts, tied for fifth in the league.Leake, who was courted by the Diamondbacks in the same offseason they signed Greinke to a six-year, $206.5 million contract, missed his last scheduled start because of an illness. He has not pitched since his best and perhaps most important outing to date, a no-decision in a 2-0, 12-inning victory at Oakland on Aug. 15 in which he gave up two hits and struck out six.“He’s been one of most consistent guys, going out there and doing his thing,” Servais said. “He does it a little bit different every time out. When he is right, he has a good sinker and the ball is on the ground the lot. He throws a ton of strikes.“We missed him with the illness. Not having him in there hurt, but glad to have him back. It’s been a really good season for him.”Leake, who helped nearby Arizona State to the College World Series in 2009, leads the AL with 164 hits allowed but his ERA is the lowest it has been since mid-April. He is 5-3 with a 4.96 ERA in 11 career starts against the Diamondbacks, one in each of the last two seasons while with St. Louis.

NLCS Game 7 ScheduleStart Time:8:09 p.m. ETTV:FS1Live Stream:Fox Sports Go or Fox Sports app Odds (via OddsShark)Los Angeles (-110; Bet $110 to win $100)Milwaukee (-108) Hader Set to Throw Multiple Innings, Close out Series for MilwaukeeMilwaukee couldn't have asked to be in a better position for Game 7.Since they were able to post insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning of Game 6, the Brewers didn't have to use Josh Hader to close out the game. With Hader rested, Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell could call on the dominant left-hander to throw as many as three or four innings in relief once Jhoulys Chacin is done on the mound.Matt Slocum/Associated PressThe length of Chacin's start will dictate when Counsell decides to unleash a rested Hader on the Los Angeles lineup.Chacin, who hasn't given up a run in the postseason, lasted 5.1 innings in the Game 3 win at Dodger Stadium. If Chacin goes a similar distance Saturday, Counsell can use Hader for three innings for the second time in the NLCS before handing the ball over to Corey Knebel to close out the series in the ninth inning.Of course, the ideal strategy could get thrown out the window if Chacin concedes a few early runs, which would cause Counsell to have an early trigger and figure out when to mix in Hader.Regardless of what happens in the first five innings, possessing a fresh Hader is what the Brewers want, and the southpaw has already shown he's capable of thriving in that situation. In Game 1, Hader entered in the fifth and tossed three scoreless innings before giving way to Xavier Cedeno.Dodgers Need More Production out of Middle of OrderThe Los Angeles bats went quiet at the worst possible time in Game 6, as the Dodgers recorded five hits.To make matters worse, the heart of the Dodgers order produced two hits, with one each from Justin Turner and Chris Taylor.Manny Machado and Cody Bellinger combined to go 0-for-8 with three strikeouts and four runners left on base from the No. 4 and No. 5 positions in the order.Charlie Riedel/Associated PressThe future doesn't look bright for the Dodgers, as Chacin held them to three hits in Game 3, two of which came in the second inning. If the Dodgers are able to string two or more hits together off Chacin early in the contest, they must be able to take advantage of the scoring opportunities. That starts with Justin Turner getting on base from the No. 3 hole Kyle Schwarber Jersey , which forces Chacin to pitch to Machado in the cleanup spot.If both Turner and Machado get on base, Bellinger and Yasiel Puig are waiting to drive them in, but if the No. 5 and No. 6 hitters aren't able to produce at the plate, the rally could end at the pitcher's spot in the lineup.Even when Chacin exits the game, the Dodgers have to focus on capitalizing on scoring opportunities since there might not be many if Milwaukee dominates the game on the mound. However, all it takes is for one player to come through with a clutch hit to make the difference in a series that has experienced three one-run games and should feature a fourth Saturday night.Follow Joe on Twitter, JTansey90.Statistics obtained from Baseball Reference. BOSTON 鈥?Dave Roberts kept his head down and walked with purpose. The Dodgers manager, still in full uniform, weaved through the concourse behind home plate, escorted by an MLB representative toward the press conference room. Normally, managers don't need to deal with the mob of fans after games, let alone during the World Series. But Fenway Park opened up the week the Titanic sank and is 106 going on a trillion years old and isn't outfitted with secret tunnels like Staples Center.Several Dodgers fans, stuck in a human traffic jam, unhappy with their Game 1 loss, spotted the skipper and did something most fans never get the opportunity to do: express their displeasure with their team's performance directly to the man in charge."Roberts, you suck!" one Dodgers fan yelled as Roberts scooted past and briskly walked toward the Red Sox clubhouse door, which leads to Fenway's press conference room. Some Red Sox fans smiled.Roberts already never needed to pay for any meal in Boston again, but his managerial decisions in the first two games of the World Series have frozen that status in carbonite for all of the wrong reasons and have put Los Angeles in desperation mode. The puzzling decisions have begun to pile up, and fingers are beginning to point directly at the man at the head of the Dodgers dugout.Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu held things together on Wednesday until the fifth inning, when he loaded the bases with two outs , and Roberts faced a choice. Do you bring Ryan Madson, who struggled in Game 1, or someone like Pedro Baez, who overwhelmed the Red Sox lineup Tuesday?Al Bello/Getty ImagesThe third-year Dodgers manager turned to Madson, only to see his reliever walk Steve Pearce on five pitches to tie up the game before allowing a two-RBI single to J.D. Martinez to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead that Boston would not relinquish鈥攖his, just one night after a Madson wild pitch set up the Red Sox to take the lead in the fifth inning of Game 1. He later gave up a hard RBI single to Rafael Devers to make it 5-3 Red Sox.So far in the World Series, Dodgers starters have failed to make it through the fifth inning."Madson has been our guy for quite some time and he's pitched in some big spots," Roberts said. "The usage, I wasn't concerned about. He's fresh. He didn't throw too many pitches yesterday. Had a couple days off coming into this series. That part of it was easy and I liked him against Pearce. He's done it time and time again, and the last few times, it hasn't worked out."The questionable pitching changes are already beginning to accumulate. All of this came after a Game 1 in which Roberts decided to take out Baez, who had struck out two Red Sox hitters handily, and bring in lefty Alex Wood to face the left-handed hittingDevers. This despite the fact that Baez has been tougher on lefties (.164/.310/.299) than righties (.246/.291/.380) this season and after Wednesday has not allowed a hit against lefties in 32 consecutive at-bats.In response, Red Sox manager Alex Cora sidestepped, bringing in Eduardo Nunez, who hit a three-run homer that clinched an 8-4 series-opening victory for Boston."Whether they were going to hit Devers with a lead or go to the bench and go with Nunez, I still liked Alex in that spot," Roberts said after Game 1.Roberts' calamitous pitching changes in the first two games have all but buried the Dodgers' chances of winning their first World Series since 1988. The pressure avalanches onto the Dodgers as this series swings over from the frigid New England winds to the Los Angeles sun. And for as much as Roberts has hurt the Dodgers' chances, Cora has bolstered Boston's odds of raising its ninth championship trophy.Maddie Meyer/Getty ImagesCora's success in the World Series isn't an anomaly. Throughout the regular season, the first-year manager stuck with his players through slumps Kris Bryant Jersey , building trust in the process. The ability to build relationships facilitated Cora's flexibility in Games 1 and 2, when he started Devers over Nunez at third base despite precedent suggesting the latter would start against lefties. The move paid off big time in the series opener; despite starting on the bench, Nunez stayed ready and came through with the biggest hit of his career. This after Devers himself had already reached base two of three times and drove in a run."He's the reason we're here," Nunez said. "Every move we make, there's a reason. And it's a good reason every time he makes a move.""He's in everybody's corner from day one," said outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. "He's a great communicator. He's a guy we all gravitate toward. He can get down to our level and be one of the guys, but at the end of the day, we ultimately know he's the leader."The reasoning behind some of Roberts' moves has been much less clear. And now with his team down two games and headed back home, Roberts will have less than 48 hours to figure out where things need to change for the Dodgers to ensure an opportunity to return back to Fenway Park for a Game 6. A lot will need to go right for Los Angeles to lock in that return flight to Logan Airport, and the Dodgers know it."You can find out a lot about yourself when your backs are against the wall," said first baseman David Freese. "That's not necessarily a good saying 'cause teams with their backs up against the wall don't necessarily end up winning. But our backs are up against the wall."A reporter points out to Freese that most teams in the Dodgers' position, down 2-0 in a playoff series after losing the first two games on the road, don't come back. Since 1985, the 2004 Boston Red Sox are the only team to come back to win a best-of-seven playoff series after losing the first two games on the road. Freese takes a second to pause to ponder his team's new reality."For sure, but some have, right? Right?" Freese asks. He musters a chuckle. "Correct?"For the Dodgers to have any chance of joining that small list, Freese's manager鈥攚ho surely remembers what it takes from being on that 2004 Red Sox team鈥攚ill have to put an end to his many mistakes.

Mark Brown/Getty ImagesThe 2018-19 MLB offseason is on as clubs race through preparations for the opening of free agency and the executive meetings that follow.Teams have already started work on the internal front , deciding on in-house items like qualifying offers and contract options. That will make it easier to look outside the organization, as each franchise gets a better feel for what it possesses and which puzzle pieces are still missing.Let's get to the latest rumors below.Astros, Dodgers Options for J.T. Realmuto? If All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto gets his wish, he won't spend the 2019 season with the rebuilding Miami Marlins. His agent, Jeff Berry, recently said on MLB Network Radio that Realmuto has already informed the Marlins he will not sign an extension with them:MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM MLBNetworkRadioJ.T. Realmutos agent, Jeff Berry, says his client has told the #Marlins, quot;hes not going to sign an extension in Miami.quot; Berry also expects Realmuto to be traded before Spring Training. #JuntosMiami 1WiRU1biNw"It makes sense, when you have one of the more valuable trade assets in baseball, to move him. Period," Berry said. It's debatable if the Marlins feel the same way鈥攖hey sound like they want to keep him鈥攂ut it's also obvious that if Miami planned to move him, it wouldn't have a hard time finding interested suitors.Multiple executives mentioned the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers as potential players in the Realmuto trade market, per Joel Sherman of theNew York Post. The Washington Nationals pursued Realmuto at the trade deadline, per's Joe Frisaro Lance McCullers Jersey , as did the Atlanta Braves, per's Mark Bowman.Realmuto has emerged as either the best catcher in baseball or one of the position's elites. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2018, finishing the campaign with career highs in home runs (21), RBI (74), runs (74) and OPS (.825) over 125 games. He's also more athletic than the traditional backstop and has a 12-steal season in his recent past (2016).Adding to his appeal鈥攂oth to the Marlins and myriad trade suitors鈥攈e's only 27 years old and under club control through 2020. If Miami does deal him, expect it to ask for the moon in return.Mets Out on Harper, Machado? The New York Mets were abysmal on offense this past season. They had to be in order for Jacob deGrom to manage only a 10-9 record despite posting a ridiculous 1.70 ERA across 217 innings. No team hit for a worse average than New York's .234. Only six clubs scored fewer runs than the Mets' 676鈥攅xactly 200 back of first place鈥攁nd their 170 runs also fell in the bottom third (21st).You might assume, then, they'd be tripping over themselves to rush out in pursuit of a free-agent offensive juggernaut like Bryce Harper (34 homers, 100 RBI) or Manny Machado (37 homers, 107 RBI). But the biggest boppers on the market might cost a lot more than New York has to spend."Industry sources said they do not expect them to be in the race for the top two players on the market this winter," Kristie Ackert reported for theNew York Daily News.As Ackert relayed, the Mets spent just over $150 million on last year's team and have roughly $144 million already tied up in next year's. Even if New York could rummage through enough couch cushions to find the coin needed to chase Harper or Machado, it's probably better off spreading its money around to cover multiple holes. The back of the bullpen has an obvious void after the team traded away Jeurys Familia. As for the offense, the Mets could look to add a catcher , center fielder and perhaps a second basemen.Adrian Beltre Undecided on Playing in 2019, Will Have Options If He DoesAdrian Beltre has nothing left to prove on the baseball field. The 39-year-old has six top-10 MVP finishes, five Gold Gloves, four Silver Sluggers and four All-Star selections. He launched 30-plus home runs five different times and had another five campaigns with triple-digit RBI.He could walk away now and go down as an all-time great. But he hasn't made up his mind whether to call it a career or not. And if he doesn't, he has multiple options on where to spend what would be his 22nd big-league season, per MLB Network's Jon Morosi:Jon Morosi jonmorosiAdrian Beltre continues to deliberate about whether to play again in 2019, source says. (Retirement seemed very likely when season ended.) I鈥檓 told multiple teams have interest if Beltre opts to play. MLBNetwork MLBBeltre addressed the topic in September, and while he didn't indicate which way he was leaning, he did sound at peace with the possibility of retirement."Mentally, I'm ready to accept the fact that maybe this is it," he said, per Gerry Fraley of theDallas Morning News. "If it is not, I want to be mentally ready to go through another year of figuring out how to be productive and stay healthy. Whatever my decision, I have to be mentally ready."Beltre can still contribute when he steps inside the lines. He hit .273 this past season while totaling 15 homers, 49 runs and 65 RBI in 119 games. But as his last two game totals show鈥攈e played just 94 times the season prior鈥攁ge and injuries might restrict him to a part-time role if he returns. PHOENIX (AP) — Add Nick Pivetta’s Tuesday night performance to the long list of quality outings by Philadelphia starters this season. He threw six scoreless innings Alex Bregman Jersey , Nick Williams homered and the Phillies bounced back from their marathon loss the previous night to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2.Pivetta (7-9) scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one to get his first win in four starts.“The guys really picked me up on defense,” he said, “and we scored runs when we really needed them. I think the team really pulled together and made this happen today.”Pivetta had gone 2-6 in his 10 previous starts since June 1.“I think the organization has continued to show a great deal of confidence in Nick Pivetta,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said, “and this is Nick kind of rewarding the organization for its patience.”The Phillies, who blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning and lost 3-2 in 14 in a 4-hour, 38-minute game on Monday, led 5-0 after a four-run eighth.“We know how to take a punch,” Kapler said. “We took a punch last night and it was a hard one, but we bounced back again today. It is sort of the character of our club now. We get knocked down but we pop right back up.”Zack Greinke (12-7) allowed only Williams’ solo homer on three hits in seven innings but lost his second straight, despite giving up a combined three runs in the two outings. He’d gone 7-0 in his previous eight starts. Greinke struck out four and matched his season high with four walks.“It was all right,” he said. “A little wild early and it got better as the game went on. I felt good the whole time but I just wasn’t hitting the spots early.”Philadelphia is up by 1½ games on Atlanta in the NL East and Arizona dropped out of first in the NL West, a half-game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.“Last night, that one hurt really bad Carlos Beltran Jersey ,” Williams said. “But it’s baseball, you know.”The Phillies scored their second run on a bunt by Cesar Hernandez leading off the eighth when Arizona reliever Jake Diekman threw the ball away at first and, backing up the play, right fielder Steven Souza Jr. threw wildly to third. It was uncharacteristic for an Arizona team that leads the majors with a .990 fielding percentage.“Things broke down on us I the eighth inning,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “I know it wasn’t pristine. We play a good brand of baseball here and we are going to address some of those concerns and make sure we don’t do it again.”Asdrubal Cabrera’s bases-loaded double off Diekman brought in two more runs and Jorge Alfaro had an RBI single against reliever Brad Ziegler.Pat Neshek pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.Paul Goldschmidt doubled in a run and another scored on third baseman Maikel Franco’s fielding error in the eighth for Arizona but Eduardo Escobar grounded into the Diamondbacks’ fourth double play of the night to end the inning.Greinke, who had 25 walks all season entering the game, walked two in each of the first two innings and escaped both times. But Williams hit the first pitch of the third just over the right field fence to put the Phillies up 1-0.“I wasn’t looking for a certain pitch,” Williams said. “I was just looking for something up.”Greinke settled down from there. But Arizona could get nothing going against Pivetta.A.J. Pollock and Escobar opened the Diamondbacks’ fourth with singles before Steven Souza Jr. grounded into a double play. Pollock was stranded at third when Ketel Marte flew out to center. The Diamondbacks’ Nick Ahmed hit into double plays to end the second and seventh.TRAINERS ROOMPhillies: INF J.P. Crawford (broken left hand) could be activated for Wednesday’s series finale, manager Gabe Kapler said, or the team could wait until after Thursday’s off day.Diamondbacks: CF Pollock was back in the lineup after two days off to rest his tired legs. Pollock made pinch-hit appearance in both of those games.UP NEXTRHP Vince Velasquez (8-8, 3.80 ERA) starts for the Phillies and LH Patrick Corbin (8-4, 3.31) goes for the Diamondbacks in the rubber match of the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
