Packed house , summer heat, Red Sox–Yankees for the best record in baseball.

So, CC Sabathia, did it feel like a really big night in Bronx?

”I wish I could tell you it did,” he said, ”but it didn’t.”

Instead, he just pitched as if the calendar read October, rather than June.

Sabathia shut down the high-scoring Red Sox, Greg Bird hit two home runs and Aaron Judge connected off a college teammate as New York bopped Boston 8-1 on Friday evening to edge ahead in the AL East.

Not since the famed Bucky Dent playoff game in 1978 had the Yankees and Red Sox met so late in a season when they owned the two top marks in baseball, the Elias Sports Bureau said. Home runs decided this matchup, too Womens Andy Dalton Jersey , with Miguel Andujar also going deep for New York.

”I mean, we’re a good club,” New York manager Aaron Boone said. ”We’re a confident group, we know we can play with anyone.”

The biggest crowd of the year at Yankee Stadium was in the spirit as lines formed outside the gates more than 3 1/2 hours before the start. The pro-Yankees chants began prior to the first pitch, the anti-Boston shouts soon followed.

Sabathia (5-3) helped end Boston’s four-game winning streak, less than a month from his 38th birthday. He gave up one run and six hits in seven innings, and improved to 6-0 in his last seven starts against the Red Sox.

The big lefty bounded off the mound to field Mookie Betts‘ tapper and throw him out to end his outing. Slowed by knee problems in the past, a pumped-up Sabathia kept in motion and jogged to the dugout.

”High-stepping right there, you mean?” he said.

Betts and Andrew Benintendi hit consecutive doubles in the fifth for Boston’s run in the opener of a three-game series.

”It’s important,” Betts said. ”As long as we make it to the playoffs, anything can happen.”

Steve Pearce Womens Ryan Kerrigan Jersey , acquired a day earlier from Toronto, batted cleanup in his debut for Boston. He doubled on the first pitch he saw and also singled off Sabathia.

”I was actually kind of jittery my first at-bat, so it was good to get that out of the way,” Pearce said.

”It would have been nice if we got the win, so that kind of overshadowed what I did at the plate. But I felt comfortable,” he said. ”It was a great atmosphere.”

Eduardo Rodriguez (9-3) gave up five early runs. Boston fell to 3-4 against its rivals this season, and 12 more games are left.

Judge connected for his 21st homer, a two-run drive in the seventh off Justin Haley. The former Fresno State players eagerly chatted for a while behind the cage during batting practice – after facing each other for the first time in the majors, the rookie reliever angrily kicked at the mound dirt as Judge circled the bases.

”We were really good friends, and it’s a joy to see him having success,” Judge said. ”We respect the competition. He might strike me out tomorrow Womens Tyler Eifert Jersey , and I’ll tip my cap to him, and it’ll be see you down the road.”

Gleyber Torres hit his first career triple and scored on Andujar’s single in the second. Torres added a sacrifice fly in a four-run fourth, capped by back-to-back homers from Andujar and Bird.

Bird added a solo drive in the eighth. The Yankees lead the majors with 131 home runs.

”No matter who you facing, if you miss on the plate that’s what’s going to happen,” Rodriguez said.

3B/1B Brandon Drury was called up from Triple-A and likely will see action with Boston starting left-handers the rest of the weekend. Acquired from Arizona, he began the season as the starting 3B, but went on the DL in early April with blurred vision and migraines. He provides a righty-hitting option at 1B. The team considered promoting Tyler Austin, but he has back trouble.

New York Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. took batting practice with the Yankees. Showing a sweet swing, he homered over the left-field wall.

Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia and knuckleballer Steven Wright will see a doctor Monday. Both are on the 10-day disabled list.

Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka (strained hamstrings) threw 48 pitches in a simulated game at the spring complex in Tampa, Florida. He’s expected to pitch in a minor league rehab game in the middle of next week, then could rejoin the Yankees.

Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale (7-4 Authentic Jared Goff Jersey , 2.56 ERA) is 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA against the Yankees. He has struck out Judge more than any other pitcher – 10 times in 15 at-bats.

Yankees: RHP Sonny Gray (5-5, 4.93) is 1-5 lifetime against the Red Sox. Since joining New York, he’s 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in three starts vs. Boston.

Police were searching for suspended Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith, who authorities said Sunday is suspected of domestic violence.

Someone called 911 to report a domestic violence incident at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a San Francisco police spokesman said. He added Smith fled the San Francisco home before officers arrived.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak said the victim's injuries were not life-threatening. Andraychak said investigators are asking for the public's help finding him.

The troubled linebacker has been arrested several times on charges of drunken driving, vandalism and illegal possession of assault rifles among other charges since the San Francisco 49ers drafted him in 2011 in the first round. The 49ers released him 2015 after he was arrested and charged with his third drunken driving in four years.

The Raiders signed him in 2015 and he played nine games for them until the NFL suspended him for substance abuse violations. The 28-year-old's application to the NFL commissioner for reinstatement was initially denied in 2016 and is still pending.

J.J. Watt smiles and chuckles quietly when asked if he's heard from Houston Texans fans who can't wait to see if he'll be the player he once was.

Watt returns Sunday after injuries limited him to eight games over the last two seasons.

"I'm very excited Womens Jameis Winston Jersey ," he said Wednesday. "I'm sure there are a lot of people who are cautiously optimistic. Obviously the last two years we've said the same thing. So, I'm just looking forward to going out there and playing football, letting it loose, having fun and letting the chips fall where they may."

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year will get an immediate test when the Texans open their season with a trip to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Watt is healthy and appears ready to make a comeback after playing three games in 2016 before having season-ending back surgery, and missing the last 11 games of 2017 after breaking his left leg.

"They've been doing things for a long time at a very high level, so it's always exciting to get out there on the field and be able to play against a team of that caliber," Watt said. "Very much looking forward to the challenge and looking forward to get back on the field myself."

While the anticipation of seeing how Watt will perform in his first regular-season game since Oct. 8 is great, Watt insists that after everything he's been through he's simply savoring every moment instead of worrying what might happen.

"It's been a long road, it's been a grind, it's been a lot of ups and downs over the last couple of years Authentic Landon Collins Jersey , obviously ... but the thing I'm most looking forward to is today's practice," he said. "Little things 鈥?I love practice, I love the meetings, I love focusing on an opponent, going out there with my guys and trying to figure out the best plan, and just the game of football. I just love being a part of it."

The return of Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus, who sustained a season-ending injury in the same game as Watt, to play with 2014 top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney should make Houston's defensive front one of the team's strengths. New England coach Bill Belichick was asked about the difficulty of dealing with Watt.

"He's very hard to block," Belichick said. "He's a great player, one of the great players in the league. He has a lot of company up there Womens Tyler Eifert Jersey , too. They have a very good defensive front."

Watt has twice led the NFL in sacks with the last time coming in 2015 when he had 17 1/2. But the 76 sacks he's piled up in the first seven years of his career only tell half the story of his prowess as a pass rusher. He also developed such a knack for using his huge hands to swat down passes at the line that he earned the nickname "J.J. Swatt."

The four-time Pro Bowler was Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, 2014 and 2015 and never missed a game until 2016, when he started struggling with a back injury that ended his season. He knows that his back problems combined with last season's injury to his leg had some people doubting he can ever be dominant again.

Watt, who Texans fans booed on 2011 draft night, used to worry about proving people who doubted him wrong. But he's stopped worrying about stuff like that now that he's approaching 30 years old.

"I've realized there's people that doubt the best players in the history of the game," he said. "I'm sure there's people that doubt Tom (Brady), which 鈥?he's the best quarterback of all-time. I've learned that peoples' opinion doesn't really matter.

"The peoples' opinion that I care about are my family, my friends, my teammates, my coaches Womens Ezekiel Elliott Jersey , my girlfriend," he continued. "Whatever everyone else thinks doesn't affect my day-to-day life, but I'm going to go out there and try and make those people I mentioned proud."

Watt has done plenty to make people proud in the last year with a fundraiser he started to help victims of Hurricane Harvey raising more than $41 million. He announced last week that the funds have been used to rebuild 600 homes and 420 childcare centers, as well as provide 26 million meals, give 6,500 people health services and more than 10,000 people medication.

Linebacker Roquan Smith has yet to play in a game for the Bears and that’s unlikely to change on Thursday night.

Smith missed the first two games while his extended contract negotiations played out and missed the third after signing because he didn’t have enough practice time. Plans to play in last week’s game were scrapped after he hurt his hamstring and that injury is probably keeping him out of the final exhibition action of the summer.

Bears coach Matt Nagy didn’t expressly rule Smith out for the game against Buffalo, but said he’s probably out after getting in a second straight good day of practice. Things are looking more positive for the first Sunday night of the regular season, though.

“I think there’s still a good chance there,” Nagy said Womens C.J. Mosley Jersey , via the team’s website. “[It’s] day-by-day with him. Right now we’ve stacked two in a row for the positive, for the good. Let’s just keep that thing going. If he’s able to play and we feel good about it, trust me, we’ll give him an opportunity to get in there.”

Smith’s first summer with the Bears did not play out as anyone would have liked given the role Smith has been expected to play since being selected eighth overall in April. While Nagy cautioned against pushing too quickly because of the risk of a setback, getting on the field in Week One would be a good step toward making the rest of his rookie year a more positive experience.

The Chicago Bears came into the season believing they were ready to start returning the favor after taking their lumps in recent years.

The gut punch they absorbed in last week's primetime opener? That's one they didn't envision.

The Bears will be back under the lights again , looking to pick themselves up against Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night in a matchup between teams that blew fourth-quarter leads last week.

With four straight last-place finishes in the NFC North but a surge in optimism following a busy offseason, the Bears seemed poised to knock off Green Bay at Lambeau Field, only to lose 24-23 to their rivals. Newcomer Khalil Mack led a dominant defense as the Bears built a 20-0 lead. But a hobbled Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes in the second half to spoil Matt Nagy's debut as Chicago's coach.

"That kind of makes it tougher, too, because you know how much you put into it and how close you came," guard Kyle Long said. "It was in reach, well within reach. But at the end of the day, you've got to move on."

The same goes for Seattle, a 27-24 loser at Denver last week. The Seahawks grabbed a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter Youth C.J. Mosley Jersey , gave up a touchdown on the Broncos' next drive and gained 3 yards in their final three possessions.

"It was really an enormous missed opportunity for us to do something special and get that win," coach Pete Carroll said.

Here are some things to know as the Bears and Seahawks eye their first wins:

Mack makes his first appearance at Soldier Field as a member of the Bears. And if he performs the way he did last week, Chicago will certainly take it.

The two-time All-Pro came through with a strip-sack that led to a turnover and a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown against backup quarterback DeShone Kizer. He also had pressure in the backfield on the play when Rodgers injured his left knee.

This will be the second game for Mack at Soldier Field. With the Raiders in October 2015, he sacked Jay Cutler on the final drive. But Robbie Gould kicked a 49-yard field goal in the closing seconds to give the Bears a 22-20 victory over the Raiders and their first win under former coach John Fox.

Doug Baldwin has been the player Wilson has looked to for help in key situations throughout their careers together. Baldwin is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks after suffering an MCL injury in his right knee in the opener. Wilson must find another go-to option in the passing game.

It could be veteran Brandon Marshall, who caught three passes including a touchdown in the opener . It could be Tyler Lockett, who also had a touchdown catch against the Broncos. Or it could be rookie tight end Will Dissly, who had three catches for 105 yards and a touchdown in the opener.

"It's hard to tackle a guy that weighs 270 pounds running down the field. Big catches too, good tough catches," Carroll said of Dissly. "He showed us that he's got really good hands."

Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had a shaky opener.

The No. 2 overall draft pick last year Youth Cam Newton Jersey , he missed a throw on a fade pattern to a wide-open Allen Robinson in the end zone and was too quick to scramble rather than stay in the pocket at times. He also couldn't move the Bears past midfield, let alone into field goal range, in the closing minutes after Green Bay scored the go-ahead touchdown.

Trubisky finished 23 of 35 for 171 yards and a 77.2 passer rating.

Seattle gave up six sacks in the opener, but at least half of those could be blamed on Wilson not trusting his protection and running into trouble. It made for a challenging game to assess the performance of an offensive line that has regularly been an issue the past few seasons.

Carroll said he was mostly pleased with the protections, but knows the challenge doesn't get any easier going from Denver's pass rush led by Von Miller to Chicago's rush now led by Mack.

Nagy acknowledged he needs to improve on his first game as a head coach. He second-guessed his own play calls, most notably two ill-advised screen passes, and acknowledged he is still growing into the role. Nagy replaced the fired Fox after spending a decade working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City.

"I wasn't in my exact rhythm that I could have been in," he said. "There's different reasons for that. For me, I just feel like that's my job. I've got to do that. I've got to be better."

The Patriots’ loss in the Super Bowl likely will be the last game for New England’s two coordinators Womens Andy Dalton Jersey , both almost certain to be named head coaches elsewhere in the next few days.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels led a typical Patriots offensive showcase Sunday night, as New England gained 613 yards against Philadelphia. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was left answering questions on why his unit couldn’t stop Eagles, who gained 538 in the 41-33 victory.

McDaniels is believed to be the Indianapolis Colts preferred candidate for their head coaching opening, while Patricia is expected to be take over the Detroit Lions.

They have already interviewed for the vacancies and spent the week leading to the Super Bowl shrugging off questions about the future.

They did the same again Sunday night, though each was noticeably subdued after coming up short in their bid to win back-to-back rings with the Patriots.

”I’m not talking about that tonight,” said McDaniels, who has served a total of nine seasons as Patriots offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick. ”I feel terrible for the guys in the locker room because they’re the ones that put in all that work.”

It would be McDaniels’ second head coaching job. He previously served as the Denver Broncos’ coach during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Following a stop in St. Louis as the Rams coordinator in 2011, he returned to New England in 2012.

Patricia’s star has been on the rise since he became New England’s defensive coordinator prior to the 2012 season. He has been with the Patriots since 2004, when he was hired as an offensive assistant.

This would be his first head coaching job.

”Right now it’s all about the game and Philly and my disappointment in the outcome of the game tonight Authentic Jared Goff Jersey ,” Patricia said when asked about the Lions’ job. ”This is really a difficult game where you are kind of all in. We didn’t do a great job of trying to execute. There is only going to be one team that is happy in the end.”

He said he hasn’t begun to reflect on what he’s accomplished in New England, having been a part of three Super Bowl-winning teams.

”Not at this current moment. I just feel very bad for our guys,” he said. ”I really wanted them to be put in a situation that allowed them to be successful in the game. Obviously we can go back and reflect at a later time.”

That time just may not be as a member of the Patriots’ staff.

Regardless of his future, McDaniels said Sunday’s loss was one of the worst he’s ever been through.

”You realize when you’re at this stage, there’s a lot of great players and coaches, and you never know when you’re going to get another opportunity. So it’s tough.”

NBC Sports has hired former NFL official Terry McAulay as an on-air rules analyst for its coverage of "Sunday Night Football" and Notre Dame football.

McAulay retired recently after 20 years as an on-field NFL game official Womens Odell Beckham Jr Jersey , and a college football officiating administrator for the past 10 seasons.

McAulay will be onsite at "Sunday Night Football" and Notre Dame games, moving between the broadcast booth during the game and the studio set for pregame and halftime shows.

McAulay was a referee for 17 of his 20 NFL seasons (1998-2017), previously serving as a side judge and a field judge. He led the officiating crew in three Super Bowls and worked 15 additional NFL playoff games.

Also, he was the American Athletic Conference's coordinator of football officiating since 2008 (the Big East Conference from 2008-13). As an on-field college official, McAulay was the referee for the Nebraska-Tennessee national championship game in January 1998.

The NFL approved a new owner for the Carolina Panthers, passed a rule to eject players who hit with their helmets, and took steps to spice up the kickoff.

Still to be resolved: a much more contentious issue.

What to do, if anything, about players who kneel during the national anthem?

”We recognize with our visibility and the interest itself that it’s taken a life of its own,” Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Thursday.

”We ask the world Womens Antonio Brown Jersey , `Don’t turn your head. Look at us. Wait a minute. Look at the NFL. Look at everything we’re doing.’ And then when we have some issues we’ve got to work through, we realize we’ve asked you to look.

”Let’s do as good as we can do.”

At their annual spring meeting, league owners welcomed David Tepper to their ranks by signing off on his record $2.2 billion deal to purchase the Panthers from disgraced team founder Jerry Richardson, who abruptly decided to sell after the NFL began investigating alleged sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace.

During a brief news conference in which he took only a handful of questions, Tepper immediately made a bit of news by seeming to imply he would be willing to listen to offers for a new stadium from other cities in North and South Carolina. The team has made no secret of its desire to replace 22-year-old Bank of America Stadium, and its lease runs only through the upcoming season.

”What’s the name of the team? Carolina Panthers. It’s going to be the Carolina Panthers,” Tepper said. ”And that means this team has to have some kind of presence in the Carolinas and last time I saw, how many are there? That’s right, there’s two of them.”

But Tepper, a hedge fund owner who is worth a reported $11 billion Youth Terrell Suggs Jersey , also reiterated several times that the largest city in the Carolinas is the ”logical place for this team.”

”As far as a new stadium, you’re asking me too much and the only thing I have a market on now is lack of knowledge,” he said. ”I’ll learn a lot more in the future.”

Tepper’s purchase was the first order of business at the luxury hotel in Atlanta’s tony Buckhead neighborhood.

That was the easy part.

As a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tepper was already familiar to the league’s owners and his approval was a mere formality. The vote was unanimous.

Anthem protests are a much thornier issue.

”We certainly want to make and will make a thought-out, deliberate decision,” said Jones, who has made it clear he opposes kneeling during the anthem and was one of the few people to speak with reporters in the hotel lobby after the meeting broke up. ”Whatever we do, let’s put the focus on what the NFL’s about and that’s playing football.”

The owners began discussing the issue – which has reached all the way to the White House – and will talk more before wrapping up their meetings Wednesday.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, a quiet but powerful protest against police brutality and racial inequities in the justice system.

Other players took up the cause, and the gesture carried on during the 2017 season even after Kaepernick left the 49ers and failed to land a job with another team.

President Trump turned the anthem protests into a campaign issue Womens Greg Olsen Jersey , saying the NFL should fire any player who takes a knee during ”The Star-Spangled Banner.” The NFL hasn’t gone that far, but Kaepernick has yet to land another job and one of his former teammates and fellow protesters, safety Eric Reid, is also out of work.

Both have filed collusion grievances against the NFL .

”I think there’s certainly resolve and I can assure the issue is getting the very best of every owner and the very best look at all our constituencies with an eye first and foremost to our fans. That’s No. 1,” Jones said.

”We know our fans want us to zero in on football, and they don’t want to think about or think that we’re thinking about anything other than football.”

The NFL was reportedly considering whether to assess a 15-yard penalty against any player who takes a knee or conducts any other protest during the anthem.

Another possible option would be to change up the pregame routine, keeping teams in their respective locker rooms until after the anthem has played.

That is the protocol long followed by college football, preventing anthem protests from being carried out in its stadiums.

The new kickoff rules are aimed at making the high-speed play a bit safer and perhaps more exciting.

Players on the kickoff team can’t get a running start, while eight of the return team’s 11 players must start out in a 15-yard zone near midfield, forcing them to run down the field alongside the coverage players. That will make the play more like a punt and should improve safety.

Wedge blocks – two blockers teaming up on the same player – will also be banned. In addition Stefon Diggs Jersey Big , any kick that hits the ground in the end zone will be an automatic touchback.

The new rules will be re-evaluated in 2019 to determine their effectiveness, but the league doesn’t want to eliminate kickoffs altogether.

”It’s part of the game,” said Atlanta Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay, head of the league’s competition committee. ”If we can make plays more competitive and safer, we should do it.”

Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell‘s agent said that the “practical reality” is that the 2018 season will be his final one in Pittsburgh because no long-term deal was reached before Monday’s deadline.

If that’s the case Marcus Mariota Jersey Big , Bell says he will be going out with a bang. Bell posted a tweet shortly after the deadline passed without the new contract he’s been trying to land for the last two years and predicted he’d have his best season ever.

to all my Steeler fans, my desire always has been to retire a Steeler…both sides worked extremely hard today to make that happen, but the NFL is a hard business at times…to the fans that had hope, I鈥檓 sorry we let youu down but trust me, 2018 will be my best season to date…

— Le'Veon Bell (@LeVeonBell) July 16, 2018

Bell has not said if he’ll follow the same script as last year and report to the Steelers just before training camp. There have been suggestions that he could extend his holdout into the season Authentic Melvin Gordon Jersey , although he’d lose $852,000 each time the team plays a game without him and having his “best season to date” seems unlikely if he’s going to miss a big chunk of it by choice.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Tom Brady calls it ”ridiculous” to suggest the suspension of Patriots receiver Julian Edelman is tied to the quarterback’s personal health coach.

The questions about Alex Guerrero on Saturday prompted Brady to abruptly end his first media availability of training camp.

”I have no comments, just ridiculous. I’m out,” Brady said before walking away.

Edelman brushed aside a similar question in his first comments since receiving his four-game ban for a drug-policy violation.

”What’s in the past is in the past. I love Alex and ultimately I’m worried about just going out here and playing football,” Edelman said. ”I’m not here to talk about or make a headline or something.”

Edelman Blake Bortles Jersey Black , tight end Rob Gronkowski and former Patriots receiver Danny Amendola are among several Patriots who have also worked or consulted with Guerrero.

Edelman will begin serving his suspension at the start of the regular season. He can practice with the team and play in preseason games.

Brady provided another short response when asked if there was tension between him and coach Bill Belichick this summer.

”I have no thoughts,” Brady said.

Brady has relied on a fitness and nutrition program developed by Guerrero since 2004. The pair also partnered in opening Brady’s TB12 Sports Therapy Center, which is adjacent to the Patriots’ Gillette Stadium facility.

In January, Patriots CEO Robert Kraft, Belichick and Brady released a statement calling an ESPN report ”flat-out inaccurate” that said there had been disputes between team officials and Guerrero regarding player-medical affairs.

Brady will turn 41 next week and has credited Guerrero’s program with helping to extend his NFL career, which is entering its 19th season. As part of the strict regimen devised by Guerrero Womens DeSean Jackson Jersey , Brady eats a mostly plant-based diet during the season.

Despite skipping the voluntary portion of spring workouts, Brady said his focus and commitment to football remain high.

”Football is very, very important to me. It always has been, and I love being out here with my teammates. So, it’s great,” Brady said. ”As you get older you have different responsibilities Harrison Smith Jersey Big , and I think that’s just part of life. The Clippers are finally out of their misery Authentic Andrew Luck Jersey , a long season marred by significant injuries coming to an end just short of the playoffs.

They finished with a winning record of 42-40, but their streak of consecutive postseason appearances ended at six. They closed out the season Wednesday night with a 115-100 loss to the Lakers, dropping their last four games in a row.

They kept their playoff hopes alive until the final week of the regular season despite the injuries. Eleven players missed a total of 265 games.

Coach Doc Rivers started an NBA-leading 37 different lineups because of the injuries. The Clippers were forced to dip into the G League for starters, most notably C.J. Williams (who was signed to a multi-year deal) and Tyrone Wallace.

The season began with nine new players on the roster after the offseason departures of Chris Paul, J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford.

But injuries soon befell the newcomers. Point guard Patrick Beverley was lost for the season after right knee surgery; starter Danilo Gallinari missed 60 games with hand and glute issues; backup guard Milos Teodosic was out 36 games with foot problems; and guard Avery Bradley was out 24 games.

Some takeaways from the Clippers’ season:

BIG MAN’S FUTURE: DeAndre Jordan has a player option of $24.1 million for next season or he could explore free agency. He and the team have yet to agree on an extension. ”I want to be where I’m wanted,” Jordan said. ”I want to have a chance to contend. That’s really what I’m looking at.” He averaged 12 points and 15.2 rebounds, but just 0.9 blocks. Jordan has spent his entire 10-year career with the Clippers and he turns 30 in July. ”Let’s not write the script yet,” Rivers said of Jordan’s future.

DOC’S FUTURE: Rivers is entering the final year of his contract. He could either receive an extension or leave after five years in Los Angeles. He was stripped of his duties as president of basketball operations a year ago, leaving his focus solely on the court. ”I love where we’re at as a franchise,” Rivers said. While he has yet to match the success he enjoyed in Boston (two NBA Finals appearances and one title), he pulled off one of his best coaching jobs by keeping the Clippers in contention all season when it would have been easy for them to fold. ”I really commend him for sticking with us,” Jordan said. Rivers trusted younger players to produce and swingman Montrezl Harrell blossomed under his tutelage.

LOU WILL: Lou Williams led the team with career highs in scoring (22.6 points) and assists (5.3) coming off the bench in his 13th season and first in Los Angeles. His scoring average was the highest of any reserve in the last 25 years. He received a $24 million Womens A.J. Green Jersey , three-year deal in February and was a key reason the Clippers remained competitive despite their injuries. ”My job this summer is getting myself prepared,” he said. ”There’s always room for improvement.”

DRAFT PICKS: Besides their own pick, the Clippers will have Detroit’s pick that they received from trading Blake Griffin in January.

FREE AGENCY: Besides Jordan, the Clippers could have decisions to make if starting guard Austin Rivers and Teodosic exercise their player options and become free agents. Rivers averaged career highs in points, assists, 3-point percentage and minutes. Bradley will be an unrestricted free agent. However, injuries blunted his impact. Harrell will be a restricted free agent, which allows the Clippers to match any offer he would receive. He was an energetic force off the bench.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings will show off their shiny new quarterback in the season opener, formally turning over the on-field leadership of a team built for Super Bowl contention to Kirk Cousins and his fully guaranteed $84 million contract.

The player directly in front of Cousins, his importance not to be understated, will likely be making his debut with the Vikings at the same time. Brett Jones has been in Minnesota for less than two weeks Womens Josh Norman Jersey , but he’s on track to start at center Sunday when the Vikings host the San Francisco 49ers. He’ll have as much on his plate as anyone wearing purple.

“Kirk’s an excellent communicator. He wants things done a certain way, and you’ve got to be able to try to the best of your ability to try to emulate what he wants,” Jones said. “Anytime there’s a new center, you want to try to have consistency, so I’m just doing what I’m told and making sure we’re all on the same page so whoever’s in there can adjust and play well so the Vikings can have success.”

Pat Elflein, who performed relatively well as a rookie, just began practicing with the team this week. The Vikings have lost their primary starting guards from last year, Nick Easton to injury and Joe Berger to retirement. So, for all the enhancements the Vikings have made to a roster they reached the NFC championship game with last winter, the offensive line lost more than it gained over the offseason.

“It’s not ideal, but it is what it is,” Cousins said. “We’re not going to dwell on what we can’t control. We’re going to focus on what we have and making the best out of it Youth Antonio Brown Jersey , and I’m excited to build a rapport with Jones and the rest of the O-line so that hopefully we can develop a continuity as the season goes on.”

Elflein wore a helmet and full pads at practice Wednesday, but he was listed as a limited participant on the injury report. Considering Elflein was just removed from the physically unable to perform list four days prior, coming off ankle and shoulder surgeries earlier in the year, the chance of him being cleared to play against the 49ers is slim. That leaves Jones, who was acquired in a trade on Aug. 26 with the New York Giants , in the center of attention.

“We’re going to coach him all week and then he’s going to play center in the NFL like he’s done for a lot of games already,” Cousins said.

While there’s some justifiable concern about using a center who’s never snapped the ball to Cousins in a game setting, the chemistry between Jones and the guards and tackles on either side of him is probably even more critical.

“Each person relies on the other person,” Jones said. “If one person does one thing bad on offense, it’s a glaring tackle in the hole for a loss. If one guy does something bad on defense, you might have a backer or a safety or somebody come down and cover you. On offense, one mistake can be a big mistake.”

Danny Isidora Womens Joe Mixon Jersey , who started one game at left guard as an injury replacement for Easton last season as a rookie, has also been taking turns at center. Coach Mike Zimmer said recently he thinks that might actually be Isidora’s natural position.

“He stays in balance pretty well there. He keeps his hips square. He’s got some power on the double teams,” Zimmer said.

NOTES: Cousins was chosen this week as one of six team captains for the season, with left tackle Riley Reiff, tight end Kyle Rudolph, defensive tackle Linval Joseph, defensive end Everson Griffen, and linebacker Anthony Barr. … Cornerback Mackensie Alexander, in line to be the primary slot man in the nickel package, did not practice Wednesday because of an ankle injury. Cornerback Xavier Rhodes (hamstring) and Reiff (foot) were listed as limited participants.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- These rookie-led Dallas Cowboys keep winning without Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. .Ezekiel Elliott ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns, fellow rookie Dak Prescott threw for a score and ran for another TD, and the Cowboys beat the Cincinnati Bengals 28-14 on Sunday for their fourth consecutive victory.Zeke ran really, really well, but a big part of this game was the efficiency of our passing game, coach Jason Garrett said. Dak read things out well, threw it to the right guy, and was accurate. ... Hes grown with the experience he gets. Hes goes about it the right way. Were lucky to have him.Without Romo, who hasnt played yet after his fourth back injury in just less than four years, the Cowboys (4-1) have already matched their victory total from a year ago. Bryant has missed two games with a hairline fracture in his right knee. The Bengals (2-3) have a losing record a year after being 8-0 midway through the season.Everybody needs to take a deep look at their self, said Bengals cornerback Adam Jones, who was still known as Pacman when he played for the Cowboys.Romo could be ready to play when the Cowboys play their next home game Oct. 30 against Philadelphia. They are guaranteed to have a winning record then, going to Green Bay next week before their bye.Prescott had his first turnover, a fumble when he was sacked late in the third quarter. But the fourth-round draft pick was 18-of-24 passing for 227 yards, and extended his NFL rookie record to 155 passes without an interception to start a career.Elliott, on only 15 carries, became the first Cowboys rookie with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games. He also had three catches for 37 yards. It doesnt surprise me. Hell deal it up any way you want to have it, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. You saw that speed take care of itself out there.Elliott put the Cowboys ahead to stay with a 13-yard TD run on their opening drive. Then on their first offensive snap of the second half, Elliott busted through the middle and into the open on the way to a 60-yard score, punctuating the play with what might be called a JerryWorld jump, leaping up a few feet to celebrate with fans sitting in field-level suites in the end zone.Prescott ran 5 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. Then he was scrambling to his right before halftime when he threw on the run to Cole Beasley for a 14-yard score. It was a homecoming of sorts for Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who went to TCU about 20 miles away from AT&T Stadium. The 2011 second-round draft pick was visiting the Cowboys for the first time in a regular-season game. But the Bengals trailed 28-0 before Dalton threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell with about 10 minutes left. That duo hooked up again for a 5-yard score with 2:39 left. Dalton finished 29 of 41 for 269 yards. They got us in longer situations on third down and we werent able to keep moving the ball, Dalton said. They took some things away, and we werent able to overcome that.IMPRESSIVE FIRST-TIMERSThe Cowboys are the first team in NFL history to have a rookie quarterback with 1,000 yards passing and a rookie running back with at least 500 yards rushing in the first five games of a season.TYRONS RETURNDallas Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith returned after missing two games with back issues. Smith had missed just one game in the first five seasons of his career before his back tightened up late in the week before the third game against Chicago.CHASING DALTONDallas defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence made his season debut following a four-game suspension for violating the NFLs substance-abuse policy. While he didnt get a sack, he boosted a pass rush that sacked Dalton four times. Lawrence, who led Dallas with eight sacks last season, had a fistful of Daltons jersey on one play but couldnt pull him down.HOME GETTING SWEET AGAINThe Cowboys have won their last two home games, following an eight-game losing streak in their showplace stadium. DETROIT -- For most of the Boston Red Sox, Sunday was a day to forget. Dion Waiters Jersey .It wasnt a great success -- they lost 10-5 to the Detroit Tigers -- but rookie Andrew Benintendi is going to remember it for a long time.Benintendi struck out in his last at-bat Friday night, then went 0 for 3 with three whiffs on Saturday. When Justin Verlander got him again in the third inning on Sunday, he knew he needed to fix something. When you strike out five straight times, you have time to think about how the pitchers are attacking you, he said. I thought I had a pretty good idea what I should be expecting.Benintendi led off the sixth inning with a triple off Verlander, the first of his career. Then in the seventh, Benintendi connected for his first home run, a drive off Shane Greene. That was pretty cool, especially because my family was here to see it, he said. I wasnt sure it was going to get out until I saw J.D. (Martinez) give up on it. After that, I just wanted to run fast enough to avoid any trouble. You cant jog on your first one.John Farrell thought the two big hits were one of Bostons few bright spots. Its always good to see a kid hit his first homer, because it gets that off their mind, Farrell said. We know this is a young man with a lot of talent, and hes going to keep hitting.Benintendi didnt have a chance of keeping up with Justin Upton, though.Upton broke out of a slump with a pair of three-run homers. This was a good day, he said. Its my brothers birthday, Mom and Dad are here and my wife and kid are here, Upton said. The Tigers won for just the fourth time in 14 games, and went 2-5 on their stay at Comerica Park. Boston has lost just two of its last 10.Martinez had a pair of doubles for the Tigers.Verlander (13-7) allowed one run on three hits in six innings before being pulled with a nine-run lead. He is 6-1 in his last 10 starts.Henry Owens (0-1) didnt find out he was pitching until late Saturday night and didnt arrive in Detroit from Triple-A until the early morning hours. He gave up eight runs on six hits and five walks in five innings.Eduardo Rodriguez was expected to return from a hamstring injury to pitch, but felt discomfort during Saturdays game, so Owens was summoned from Pawtucket. The Red Sox scored four times off Greene in the seventh, including Benintendis two-run homer. In his last scheduled game in Detroit, David Ortiz hit a 111-mph drive down the right-field line in the first. Instead of settling for his usual single, he took second on Martinez, leading to a joking exchange between the Red Sox star and Verlander after the inning.Weve had a lot of battles, Verlander said. That was just one of them.Ortiz batted for the final time in the eighth and received long standing ovations both before and after he grounded out. He tipped his cap to the crowd as he walked off.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: INF Devin Marrero was optioned back to Pawtucket to clear room for Owens.LAST PRESENT FOR BIG PAPIWhile the Tigers presented Ortiz with a large framed photo set on Saturday, he got another gift from his friends on the team on Sunday. Before the game, he was showing off a custom-made Venezuelan guitar that was decorated with scenes from his playing career.UP NEXTRed Sox: Boston travels to Tampa Bay on Monday, with former Ray David Price (11-8, 4.19) facing his old team in the opener. Blake Snell (4-5, 3.06) is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay. Tyler Johnson Jersey . And follow right through Deadline Day for all the updates. From Pierre LeBrun While Anaheim GM Bob Murray said earlier this season he was not going to trade Jonas Hiller despite the fact hes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, some sources have told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun that Murray might be willing to move another goalie. Josh Richardson Jersey . Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee? Green had bounced around the NBA when he wasnt playing overseas. The Pacers gave up on Plumlee after just one season. Now Green and Plumlee are key cogs in the Suns surprising breakout season. . Any real chance at payback wont come until the playoff. Still, Pittsburgh knows its taut 3-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday night is a pretty good place to start laying the groundwork. "They are a very good defensive team," Penguins forward Brandon Sutter said. White-hot Melbourne Victory striker Natasha Dowie has twin goals in mind as she prepares for the first Melbourne derby of the W-League season. The first order of business is becoming the first side to stop Melbourne Citys relentless charge through the league. And if she can do that, the leagues in-form striker believes she will be on track to represent England again.Dowie, 28, has three goals in as many games this season, leading the W-League goalscoring charts despite Victory languishing on the bottom of the table. On Sunday at AAMI Park, her side faces the most imposing test of their season to date when their cross-town rivalry resumes. But Dowie - whose impressive CV includes stints in England, the USA and a quarter-century of caps with the Three Lions - says Victory can spring a surprise.Fair play to City, they ran away with last year and theyre the strong favourites 100 per cent, she told AAP.But with a derby its not about form, its about who turns up on the day.I learned that playing for Liverpool. Whenever wed play Everton - always classed as the weaker team - it was never easy.Theres no point in playing tthe game if you cant get up for games like this and it would be amazing if we could turn them over and stop their unbeaten run. Hassan Whiteside Jersey. Off the back of a short spell with Boston Breakers, Dowie said she was hitting new heights.I feel great and Im probably in the best form Ive ever been in, she said.Id be happier if we were winning games. But on an individual note I cant be doing any more than Im doing.Dowie was the leading scorer in the 2013 English Womens Super League, but missed out on the 2013 European Championship. Her qualifying goals helped England reach the 2015 Womens World Cup but the striker was again overlooked for the Canada tournament.Still, she remains hopeful that good form over the Australian summer can help her win caps in the future.Ive been in and out of the England setup and Id be stupid to say it wasnt in my mind. TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays say they are not taking anything for granted during this home stand. Discount Washington Redskins Jerseys .They are facing two teams who have the worst records in the American League. They defeated the Los Angeles Angels (52-73) in the opener of a three-game series 7-2 on Tuesday. The Angels have lost 11 straight road games, the most since they lost 14 road games in a row April 29-June 8, 1969.The Minnesota Twins (49-76) follow the Angels for a three-game series at Rogers Centre starting Friday. Then the Blue Jays go to Baltimore for a three-game series against the Orioles, who are two games out of first in the American League behind the Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox who are tied for first.I think the onus for us should be on just playing good baseball and not beating ourselves, said knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who pitched 6 2/3 innings Tuesday for the win. If we can execute and play good baseball I think we should come out of this homestand feeling good about the momentum going to Baltimore. If we dont play well those teams can beat you just easily as a team like the Red Sox.The Angels have long been out of postseason contention but infielder Cliff Pennington, who played part of last season with the Blue Jays when they won the Al East, said returning to Rogers Centre brings back good memories. It was an amazing three months I spent here playing at the Rogers Centre, Pennington said Tuesday before going 1-for-2 with a walk as the Angels second baseman. Those last three months was one of the coolest experiences Ive had as a player. ... the atmosphere here in the Rogers Centre was one of the coolest things Ive experienced. The Blue Jays will start right-hander Marco Estrada (7-5, 3.20 ERA) in the second game of the series on Wednesday against Angels right-hander Matt Shoemaker (7-13, 4.14 ERA).Estrada allowed five hits, including three home runs, and five runs in four innings Aug. 16 against the New York Yankees and did not return after a rain delay. He did not factor in the decision when the Blue Jays came back to win 12-8.The six-man rotation with the extra day between starts has not been good for Estrada so far. He is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in eight starts on four days rest this season, is 2-4 with a 3.97 ERA in nine starts on five days rest, and 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in four starts with six or more days of rest.In two career starts against the Angels, he is 1-0 with a 4.97 ERA.Shoemaker is going for two wins in a row. He allowed five hits, two walks and two earned runs over seven innings Thursday to earn the win against the Seattle Mariners. He has a 3.12 ERA over his past 18 starts with 114 strikeouts and 18 walks. In two career games, including one start, against the Blue Jays he is 1-1 with an 8.38 ERA. In his only start against Toronto, he allowed eight runs (seven earned) over six innings at Rogers Centre on May 21, 2015.While the Blue Jays will try to maintain at least a share of first place in their division, the Angels will try to end an ugly road losing streak.Down the stretch every game is important, Blue Jays infielder Darwin Barney said. I dont think were taking anyone lightly. Thats a good team over there. Cheap DaRon Payne Jersey . -- About a third of the way through the regular season, the Washington Wizards are at . Tepin is tremendous, and Lady Eli is sensational, but neither will remain on the racetrack forever. Tepin will be 6 next year, and Lady Eli is scheduled to be sold at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale (along with Stellar Wind, to mention another notable), so who knows what the future might hold? The good news is that lots of talent is coming up. That was evident in the group of 3-year-old fillies in Saturdays Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. Heck, if you want to take a long-term view, you could even find solace in the impressive score by the 2-year-old grass filly La Coronel last Wednesday in Keenelands Jessamine Stakes. Before the QE II was even run, Time and Motion had made a compelling case to be the ranking 3-year-old turf filly in the country with her victory over Catch a Glimpse in the Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga. Until the Lake Placid, Catch a Glimpse was the top turf female of her generation off her 8 for 8 record on grass, which included important wins in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, the Penn Mile over males, and the Belmont Oaks. But Time and Motion was just plain better than Catch a Glimpse in the Lake Placid, overcoming her rivals enormous tactical pace advantage to prevail officially by a neck, a margin that did not do her performance justice.Time and Motion didnt win the QE II by a lot, either -- she was but a head the best in a three-way photo -- but again, this was a margin that didnt entirely reflect her actual performance. You could see countless stretch duels over the course of decades and learn enough from them to know that when Time and Motion and Hawksmoor, the lone European invader in the QE II, hooked up in deep stretch, it never REALLY looked like Time and Motion was going to get there. You know what I mean: You see enough stretch battles, you get to know before the wire comes the look of the horse who will win.For me, Time and Motion never had THAT look through the stretch Saturday in her battle with Hawksmoor, and that doesnt even address the late threat she faced from Harmonizes last-seconds charge from the outside. So Time and Motion somehow finding a way to get her head down first speaks volumes about her sheer will to win, which is a most appealing characteristic when coupled with her obvious ability. But Harmonize and Hawksmoor deserve high marks, too. Harmonize, whom I always considered to be no worse than the third- or fourth-best 3-year-old turf filly in the country, came within inches of snaring a second straight Grade 1 victory in the QE II. In her last start, she got up just in time to win the Del Mar Oaks. Harmonnize is clearly better now than she was earlier in the season -- no surprise for a 3-year-old who is given a chance at such a career arc -- and there is no reason to think her best races arent still in front of her. Cheap Greg Stroman Jersey. And as for Hawksmoor, she was somewhat overlooked in the QE II as being a legitimate Group 2- and near Group 1-level performer in Europe, but she was game as can be.The obvious disappointments in the QE II were On Leave, who finished fourth in her pursuit of a fifth straight win, and Catch a Glimpse, who tired after setting the pace under pressure from Hawksmoor to finish seventh of eight. On Leave did not run her best race Saturday, so it would be a mistake to conclude she cant win at this level. On Leave was the most inexperienced member of the QE II field; she was still a maiden when the calendar flipped to June. On Leave has made tremendous progress, and there is zero reason to think her progression wont continue once she gets a chance to catch her breath.Catch a Glimpse might have been displaced at the top of this group before Saturday, but she was and is still a force, so her effort wasnt even close to a representative performance. Everyone knows Catch a Glimpse can do much better. Still, this is a two-way street. Folks who are quick to say a horse can do much better after that horse turns in a clunker should also be willing to concede that a horse isnt always as good as he or she looks when they win or run well. The other stakes race of note Saturday was the Futurity at Belmont, won by Theory. Theory, you might remember, is the Gemologist colt who was immensely impressive winning his debut at Saratoga, was subsequently stopped on, and was then put back in training after being treated for a minor foot bruise. This context is important because, on the surface, Theorys Futurity win wasnt a wow performance. He did win by 3-1/2 lengths, which is ample. The other side of the coin is, he beat Star Empire by just 3-1/2 lengths, the Star Empire who came into the Futurity off a career-best Beyer Figure of only 70 earned in a distant third-place finish in the Arlington-Washington Futurity.Im thinking Theory was simply rusty Saturday. The Futurity was, after all, his first start in 2-1/2 months, and the rust factor would explain why he had to be nudged on to stay close to the pacesetter, and why he really didnt put the Futurity away until fairly late. I also think Theorys next start, as long as it is sensible, will tell us a lot about him. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. . -- ?If No. 15 Purdue continues to shoot 3-pointers with the accuracy it did Saturday against Morehead State, the Boilermakers will have the potential for a special season.Freshman guard Carsen Edwards scored 16 points, and Purdue made 15 of 29 attempts from 3-point range -- 11 in the first half -- on the way to a 90-56 victory. When you look at their big men (Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas), you kind of have to start there, but you learn quickly that Purdue is a very balanced team, Morehead State acting head coach Preston Spradlin said. When defending them, you have to pick your poison. The Boilermakers (6-2), coming off a Wednesday loss at No. 14 Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, used a 15-0 first-half run to stretch a 10-9 lead to 25-9, and Purdue continued to pull away.Dakota Mathias added 14 points, Swanigan and P.J. Thompson had 13 each for Purdue and the 7-foot-2 Haas had 11 points and five rebounds.Miguel Dicent had 11 points for Morehead State (2-5), which played without coach Sean Woods, who has been suspended with pay since Nov. 22, when the university launched an official investigation into Woods treatment of players.Purdue made 11 of 20 from 3-point range during the first half when it built a 47-25 lead. Carsen Edwards, who made his first start in place of slumping Vince Edwards, and Mathias made four 3-pointers each in the first half. There are a lot of people on the team who are able to shoot the ball, Carsen Edwards said. The shots were falling today, and people were hot, so we tried to keep getting the ball to the hot hand and keep making shots.Thompson said that the 6-8 Swanigan, who had nine rebounds, and Haas always will be the focus of the Purdue offense. The bigs are our bread and better, said Thompson, who was 3 of 5 from 3-point range. We definitely want to work inside-out. It looks like the more we get the ball inside, the easier it is for us shooters, because (Swanigan and Haas) get so much attention with double teams. Then, we get wide open 20-footers.Purdue coach Matt Painter was most pleased that the Boilermakers, who had been averaging 15.7 turnovers, were guilty of only nine Saturday, including three during the final 20 minutes. We have been emphasizing turnovers the whole season, and today really was no different in terms of how other teams have played us defensively, Painter said. We also have had people not zone us, and we still have had turnovers. Today was a good sign that we bounced back after a loss on the road (at Louisville) and played well. The Boilermakers played without fifth-year graduate student transfer point guard Spike Albrecht, who suffered a back injury in a Nov. 18 victory against Georgia State and battled through the pain in the Louisville game. Painter said Albrecht is out indefinitely.BIG PICTUREMorehead State: With Woods suspended indefinitely, the Eagles are a distracted basketball team, and it shows as their losing streak reached five on Saturday, including 0-3 for acting coach Spradlin.Purdue: Its a byproduct of opposing defenses centering their attention on Boilermaker big men Swanigan and Haas, but Purdue entered this game leading the Big Ten in 3-point field goal shooting percentage at 41.8 and made 55 percent from beyond the arc during the opening half on Saturday.POLL IMPLICATIONSWhile it did not play well until late in the game Wednesday at No. 14 Louisville, Purdue has a chance to move up in the next AP Top 25 after playing very well in Saturdays 34-point victory. Only 2016 NCAA champion Villanova and 2013 NCAA champ Louisville have beaten the Boilermakers.LINEUP CHANGEWith junior forward Vince Edwards struggling, Painter inserted freshman guard Carsen Edwards -- no relation to Vince -- into Saturdays starting lineup, and the first-year player made 6 of 12 shots, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. He gave us some additional quickness, Painter said of Carsen Edwards. He can drive and shoot it. Sometimes, you are just searching for things at this time of the season. Vince and Carsen will continue to play a lot.UP NEXTMorehead State: The Eagles do not play until going to Lipscomb on Dec. 10.Purdue: The Boilermakers travel to New York City for a Tuesday night game against Arizona State in the Jimmy V. Classic.---More AP college basketball: and . JOHNS, N. . -- Jaye Marie Green shot a 4-under 68 on Thursday to increase her lead to five strokes after the second round of the LPGA Tours qualifying tournament. . It says Pocklingtons lawyer filed the appeal Friday in a California court. CTV Edmonton also says Pocklington gave a $100,000 cash deposit as part of the conditions of his bail, and that he will be out on bail until his appeal is heard. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week they discuss Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, the "worst rule" in pro hockey, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and the NHL trophy finalists. Cathal Kelly, Toronto Star: My thumb is down to Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment and the way theyve handled the hiring or firing of Bryan Colangelo; their president and general manager. At this point, Colangelo should either be in or he should be out. We are a month gone from the NBAs regular season closing and yet we wait. We wait for what; we dont yet know, decisiveness is key here and MLSE has failed on that point. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is down to the worst rule in pro hockey. Weve seen it now 20 times in the Stanley Cup Playoffs - the delay of game for flipping the puck over the glass. We saw in Game 2 of the Kings-Sharks series basically costing San Jose the win. Youre fighting for every inch of ice in the playoffs and this rule has to go. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is down to Washington Nationalls outfielder Bryce Harper for lunacy. He went back for a fly ball and collided with the right field wall at Dodger Stadium on Monday in Los Angeles and turned a double into a triple. This was a one-sided game in the late innings and he compounded everything by saying he would do it again. He will always play hard, but play smart. Dave Hodge, TSN: Thumbs have gone up and down every day lately as the NHL rolls out its trophy finalists. There was an interesting criticism of the Hart Trophy nominees from Ryan Getzlaf, who charged that voters in the East were in bed when he and the other top players in the Western Conference were playing, but, so what? The voters could have stayed up all night and not done better than Crosby, Ovechkin and Tavares. So my trophy beef isnt with the hart, but rather, with the Norris, where the voters mightnt have been asleep, but did they just happen to have their eyes closed every time Zdeno Chara played a game? Im thinking thats the only way you miss him as a Norris finalist, as big as he is and as valuable as he is to the Boston Bruins. KANSAS CITY, Mo. Dalvin Cook Jersey . -- Minnesota Twins closer Brandon Kintzler was concentrating on Terrance Gore, the Kansas City Royals pinch-runner, not Paulo Orlando, the hitter. After Salvador Perezs pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning pulled the Royals within a run, Gore ran for him. With Orlando, who had four hits to match his career high, at bat, Kintzler picked Gore off first base to preserve the Twins 7-6 victory Thursday night.Gore was initially called safe, but after a 1 minute, 15 second review, the call was reversed to end the game.Kintzler made two throws to first baseman Kennys Vargas and the second one nabbed Gore.I think the game plan was just forget the hitter and try to pick the guy off, Kintzler said. I knew I had him. But, you just never know what the replay is going to say. Ive never ended the game on a pickoff. Maybe when I was a kid.Gore is used almost strictly as a pinch-runner and has 11 steals in 12 attempts this season. He got caught leaning, Royals manager Ned Yost said.Byron Buxton tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice in the victory.Buxtons one-out double triggered a three-run ninth off Kelvin Herrera (2-6). Robbie Grossman, Miguel Sano and Max Kepler contributed run-scoring singles in the ninth. The Twins won for the first time in 10 games this season at Kauffman Stadium.Michael Tonkin (3-2) was the winner, while Kintzler logged his 16th save in 19 opportunities despite giving up two runs, three hits and a walk.Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was pulled with one out in the seventh, allowing four runs and eight hits, including a solo homer to Vargas in the sixth. The Twins three-run seventh included a two-run triple by Buxton, who scored on Jorge Polancos single.Twins starter Kyle Gibson failed to hold the two-run lead through the bottom of the inning. Jarrod Dyson tripled home Drew Butera and scored on Whit Merrifields single to tie the score.Orlando had two doubles, while Butera had three hits, equaling his career best, including a single to lead off the ninth.Royals designated hitter Kendrys Morales was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning. He got sick, Yost said. He was running a little bit of a fever and was down in energy.DOZIER SITSTwins 2B Brian Dozier, who is 1 for 30 after hitting his 42nd home run in his first at-bat on Sept. 22, did not start for the first time since May 24. When you get tired you start trying to muscle the ball and hes been a little more impatient the last couple of days, Twins manager Paul Molitor said. Were down to 12 at-bats if he plays the next three games, roughly. Give up three to try to make the last 12 really good. ... Eduardo Escobar made his first start of the season at second base. He started four games there last season.ONE MORE VICTORYThe Royals need one victory in their final three games to have a winning record for the fourth consecutive year. The last time the Royals accomplished that was 1975-1980, six straight winning seasons.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: 1B Joe Mauer, who is hitless in his past 15 at-bats, missed the three games against the Royals with a quad injury.Royals: RHP Kris Medlen, who is on the 60-day DL with rotator cuff inflammation, said he is shut down until November when he will begin a throwing program. Beyond frustrating, Medlen described his season. He was 1/3 with a 7.77 ERA in six starts.UP NEXTTwins: RHP Tyler Duffey has allowed 198 base runners (161 hits), 31 walks and six hit batters in 131 innings. He will make his final start Friday at the White Sox, who will counter with LHP Carlos Rodon.Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura is 0-1 with 5.40 ERA in two starts this season against the Indians. Cleveland LHP Ryan Merritt will make his first big league start. Trevor Siemian Jersey . -- The plastic that was taped across the lockers in Oaklands clubhouse came down and the champagne that was on ice went back into the cooler. Randy Moss Jersey . It was just business as usual for the Thunder at home. Durant scored 32 points and the Thunder beat the Bulls 107-95 on Thursday night for their eighth straight win. . As the crowd erupted, Davis knocked the ball off the glass and back into his hands. With 1:14 to go in overtime, Davis sixth block also became his 17th rebound. That, along with his 32 points -- which tied a career high -- proved too much for Denver to overcome, and the Pelicans held on for their third straight victory, 111-107 on Sunday night. PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks outfielder A.J. Pollock has a strained groin and could be out for the rest of the season.Pollock was hurt running out a fly ball early in Friday nights game against San Francisco, and an MRI on Saturday revealed the extent of the injury. Arizona manager Chip Hale said the injury is treatable, but it could be at least a week before Pollock can resume physical activity. It could be the end of the season. Were not going to put him back out there until hes 100 percent, Hale said.Pollock made his season debut two weeks ago after being activated from the 60-day disabled list following his recovery from a broken right elbow suffered in the spring. He was hitting .303 in his past 10 games after starting 0-for-8.He was runnning straight ahead and he just felt it tighten up, Hale said. Pat Elflein Jersey. Physically it stinks for him, but I think on the mental side its still difficult, because A.J. was feeling great. He was really enjoying being a part of the club on the field. The Diamondbacks will definitely be without backup catcher Chris Herrmann for the rest of the season after he broke two bones in his left hand sliding into second base during Friday nights game. Herrmann will need surgery.Herrmann was looking at more time behind the plate after coming off the disabled list last week following his recovery from a hamstring injury. College football is off to a roaring start, with a Kickoff Week for the ages and a Week 5 that . ... well, its one for the ages too. Week 5 is the first time since 1978 that weve had three conference matchups of top-10 teams and the first time since 2002 that weve seen three top-10 games of any kind on the same Saturday. That means a slew of stars will collide on the field this Saturday. What better time to reboot our preseason #CFBrank and see how our experts assess the nations best players after the first month of the season? We asked 10 writers to grade players from across the country on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best early season performance possible. We ended up with a clear No. 1 player, a guy who has scored 25 touchdowns in four games and netted 10 perfect 10 scores from our panel. After Louisvilles breakout Lamar Jackson, though, things got interesting. Here are our top 50 players after four weeks.Lamar Jackson Louisville Cardinals Sophomore | Quarterback Score: 10.0 Preseason rank: 51Jackson has scored 25 total touchdowns this year (13 passing, 12 rushing), emerging as a top Heisman candidate through four games. He has more touchdowns than 123 FBS teams. -- Andrea AdelsonChristian McCaffrey Stanford Cardinal Junior | Running back Score: 9.6 Preseason rank: 3Through three games (the Cardinal had a Week 2 bye), McCaffrey is leading the Pac-12 with an average of 145.3 rushing yards per game. With three rushing touchdowns and a fourth receiving TD, hes the centerpiece of the offense in the run and pass game, with a team-high 12 catches for 119 yards. -- Kevin GemmellMyles Garrett Texas A&M Aggies Junior | Defensive lineman Score: 9.5 Preseason rank: 5The junior defensive end is off to a solid start pressuring the passer this season. He has picked up three sacks, five tackles for loss and six quarterback hurries in the Aggies first four games. --Sam Khan Jr.Jabrill Peppers Michigan Wolverines Junior | Linebacker Score: 9.4 Preseason rank: 9Michigan players have run out of adjectives for the versatile sophomore linebacker. Whenever he wows the team now, they just turn to one another and say, Jabrill is really good at football. With the most tackles for loss and punt return yards in the nation through four weeks, Peppers teammates have had a lot of reasons to say that recently. -- Dan MurphyJ.T. Barrett Ohio State Buckeyes Junior | Quarterback Score: 9.3 Preseason rank: 12Completely healthy and unchallenged as the starter, Barrett is again breaking records while leading Ohio States high-octane offense. With 10 touchdown passes already, its just a matter of time before he becomes the most prolific passer in the schools storied history. -- Austin WardJonathan Allen Alabama Crimson Tide Senior | Defensive lineman? Score: 9.2 Preseason rank: 15Coming back for another season seems like a risk worth taking, now that Allen is playing even better than he did the past season. Not only has he continued to play well against the run, but he has also already tallied three sacks and four quarterback hurries. -- Alex ScarboroughArden Key LSU Tigers Sophomore | Defensive end Score: 9.1 Preseason rank: 60Key said before the season that he wants to record 20 sacks this season, and we laughed. Maybe it wasnt so funny after all. The LSU sophomore leads the SEC with 6.5 sacks through four games, so hes right on pace. -- David ChingGreg Ward Jr. Houston Cougars Senior | Quarterback Score: 9.05 Preseason rank: 27Ward has been the catalyst for Houstons high-powered offense that has the No. 6 Cougars at 4-0, starting with an upset of Oklahoma. He has thrown for five TDs and run for three more so far this season.Derwin James Florida State Seminoles Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 9.0 Preseason rank: 16James got hurt in Week 2 against Charleston Southern, and his absence has made it abundantly clear how valuable he is. Without him, the Seminoles struggled defensively against Louisville and USF. -- Andrea AdelsonDerek Barnett Tennessee Volunteers Junior | Defensive end Score: 8.95 Preseason rank: 23His typical sack total isnt there yet, but Barnett has been a regular presence in opponents backfields. The Tennessee defensive end ranks fourth in the SEC with six tackles for loss and is always priority No. 1 for opposing tackles. -- David ChingDeMarcus Walker Florida State Seminoles Senior | Defensive end Score: 8.9 Preseason rank: 61Walker is tied for the ACC lead with 5.5 sacks, and 4.5 of them came in a comeback win over Ole Miss. He has been the most consistent lineman for the Seminoles this season. -- Andrea AdelsonPat Elflein Ohio State Buckeyes Senior | Offensive lineman Score: 8.85 Preseason rank: 25The move from guard to center has perhaps gone even better than the Buckeyes imagined. There have been no issues with Elfleins snapping, his surgically repaired shoulder is back to full strength, and his veteran leadership has been invaluable for a unit with three new starters on the line. -- Austin WardMalik McDowell Michigan State Spartans Junior | Defensive lineman Score: 8.8 Preseason rank: 24The massive middle of Michigan States defensive line is a game plan-altering force for anyone who faces the Spartans. McDowells eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss dont tell the full story of how much he can affect a game. -- Dan MurphyRaekwon McMillan Ohio State Buckeyes Junior | Linebacker Score: 8.75 Preseason rank: 17The steady centerpiece of one of the nations toughest defenses continues to be a tackling machine, making the most of any play that comes his way. A couple blowouts have given McMillan breathers late in games, but he has still racked up 20 tackles and a forced fumble already for the Buckeyes. -- Austin WardDesmond King Iowa Hawkeyes Senior | Defensive back Score: 8.7 Preseason rank: 8Opponents have mostly given up on throwing the ball in Kings direction. The senior has 19 tackles through four games and has broken up two passes. Hes also averaging 30 yards per kick return, on which its harder to keep the ball away from him. -- Dan MurphyEvan Engram Ole Miss Rebels Senior | Tight end Score: 8.65 Preseason rank: UnrankedEverybody talked up Alabamas O.J. Howard after last seasons national championship game, but its Engram who leads all tight ends nationally with 26 receptions, 397 yards and three touchdowns through the first four games. -- Greg OstendorfDevonte Fields Louisville Cardinals Senior | Linebacker Score: 8.6 Preseason rank: 45Fields has been a big reason the Louisville defense has been so dominant in the early part of the season. So far, he has 20 tackles, two sacks and a team-high three pass breakups. -- Andrea AdelsonEddie Jackson Alabama Crimson Tide Senior | Defensive back Score: 8.55 Preseason rank: 33The senior has emerged as the heart and soul of the Alabama secondary. He has also become quite the playmaker, with a pick-six and a punt return for a touchdown. -- Alex ScarboroughDalvin Cook Florida State Seminoles Junior | Running back Score: 8.5 Preseason rank: 4Cook got off to a slow start but posted his best game of the season against USF, running for 267 yards and two touchdowns. It was his first game this season with 100 or more yards rushing. -- Andrea AdelsonCarl Lawson Auburn Tigers Junior | Defensive lineman Score: 8.45 Preseason rank: 31Fully healthy, Lawson has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks this season. Through the first four games, he has eight QB hurries and three sacks, including a critical one at the end of Saturdays game against LSU. -- Greg OstendorfMalik Hooker Ohio State Buckeyes Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 8.4 Preseason rank: UnrankedThere might not be a first-time starter anywhere in the country who has burst onto the scene quite like the game-changing safety has for the Buckeyes. The Ohio State secondary could have easily battled growing pains after losing three starters to the NFL draft, but Hooker was apparently just biding his time. He has nabbed three interceptions and a touchdown return in just three games. -- Austin WardTeez Tabor Florida Gators Junior | Defensive back Score: 8.35 Preseason rank: 20He didnt have his best day against Tennessee, but its hard to deny that Tabor ranks among the SECs top cornerbacks. Tabor has picked off two passes and broken up one in three games for a star-studded Florida secondary. -- David ChingDeshaun Watson Clemson Tigers Junior | Quarterback Score: 8.3 Preseason rank: 1Through four games, we have not yet seen the best out of Watson, though he did throw for more than 300 yards against Georgia Tech. His production in the run game is down compared to where it was a year ago. -- Andrea AdelsonLeonard Fournette LSU Tigers Junior | Running back Score: 8.25 Preseason rank: 2He isnt even healthy, and Fournette still leads the SEC in rushing. Against Wisconsin, Fournette reinjured the ankle he hurt during preseason practice. Even so, hes averaging 128.7 rushing yards per game and is one of the lone bright spots for LSUs offense. -- David ChingBen Boulware Clemson Tigers Senior | Linebacker Score: 8.2 Preseason rank: UnrankedBoulware has been the heart of another top-notch Clemson D, with 23 tackles in three games (he missed one because of an injury). Clemson ranks No. 1 in total defense. -- Andrea AdelsonTreDavious White Auburn Tigers Senior | Defensive back Score: 8.15 Preseason rank: 35White seems to have made a good decision by returning for his senior season. He ranks among the SECs top cover corners and has already scored two touchdowns, one after an interception and one on an amazing, 60-yard punt return. -- David ChingDonnel Pumphrey San Diego State Senior | Running back Score: 8.1 Preseason rank: 90Pumphrey is finally getting some well-deserved Heisman hype. He leads the nation with 599 rushing yards, is averaging a robust 8.2 yards per carry and has found the end zone seven times. Fun note: Pumphreys 199.76 yards per game average is more than that of 83 FBS teams. As his own team, hed rank 46th nationally. He wears on opponents, as 400 of his 599 yards have come in the second half. -- Kevin GemmellPatrick Mahomes II Texas Tech Junior | Quarterback Score: 8.05 Preseason rank: 42Mahomes is putting up monster numbers, with 1,493 passing yards, 18 total touchdowns and just two interceptions. If he can win some big games, hell be in the Heisman hunt. -- Max OlsonCalvin Ridley Alabama Crimson Tide Sophomore | Wide receiver Score: 8.0 Preseason rank: 14After a slow start against USC, the former Freshman All-American is back on track, as he leads Alabama in receptions (20) and receiving yards (224). As the passing game picks up steam under true freshman QB Jalen Hurts, so should Ridleys numbers. -- Alex ScarboroughChristian Wilkins Clemson Tigers Sophomore | Defensive lineman Score: 7.95 Preseason rank: 85Wilkins has shown his versatility for the Tigers, playing both defensive end and defensive tackle with exceptional results. He has five tackles for loss, two sacks and four quarterback pressures. -- Andrea AdelsonAdoree Jackson USC Trojans Junior | Defensive back Score: 7.9 Preseason rank: 21The do-it-all Jackson has been one of the few bright spots for the Trojans this year. As a defensive back, hes fourth on the team with 19 stops, an interception and one recovered fumble. But his impact has really been felt on special teams, where he has returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns. He has been quiet offensively, with no catches and one rush for 11 yards. -- Kevin GemmellChad Kelly Ole Miss Rebels Senior | Quarterback Score: 7.85 Preseason rank: 40After the first month of the season, Kelly is behind Missouris Drew Lock in passing yards (1,235) and touchdowns (12), but considering the caliber of opponents Kelly has faced, its hard to argue that Kelly isnt still the SECs best quarterback. -- Greg OstendorfMike Williams Clemson Tigers Junior | Wide receiver Score: 7.8 Preseason rank: 48Williams returned after missing nearly all of the past season because of a neck injury, and he leads the Tigers with 303 yards receiving. He has one touchdown catch on the season. -- Andrea AdelsonSeth Russell Baylor Bears Senior | Quarterback Score: 7.75 Preseason rank: 36Russell came back strong from his neck injury and has the Bears rolling at 4-0, with 1,294 total yards and 14 touchdowns. He is now 12-0 as a starter. -- Max OlsonJake Butt Michigan Wolverines Senior | Tight end Score: 7.7 Preseason rank: 54Butts first two catches of the season were touchdowns. Since then, he has led Michigans passing attack with 19 catches for 234 yards through four games. He has proven to be the reliable, middle-of-the-field threat the Wolverines expected. -- Dan MurphyMarshon Lattimore Ohio State Buckeyes Sophomore | Defensive back Score: 7.65 Preseason rank: UnrankedThe Buckeyes have long raved about Lattimores potential impact in the secondary, if he could just stay healthy, and he has more than lived up to the billing through three games at full strength to open the season. With three interceptions and a touchdown to Lattimores credit, testing him has been a bad idea for opposing quarterbacks. -- Austin WardDan Feeney Indiana Hoosiers Senior | Offensive lineman Score: 7.6 Preseason rank: 37Indianas stalwart offensive lineman suffered a concussion in the first half of his second game of the year. He didnt play in a loss to Wake Forest the following week, and his status for Saturday is still up in the air. -- Dan MurphyNick Chubb Georgia Bulldogs Junior | Running back Score: 7.55 Preseason rank: 11Chubb failed to break the 100-yard mark in the past three games, but Georgias opener against North Carolina was an instant reminder of his greatness. He ran for 222 yards and two touchdowns against the Tar Heels in his return from injury. -- David ChingRoyce Freeman Oregon Ducks Junior | Running back Score: 7.5 Preseason rank: 7A leg injury has slowed Freeman this season. But when healthy, he has been efficient per usual. Hes averaging 8.8 yards per carry with 325 yards and four rushing touchdowns. Despite missing almost two full games, hes still among the Pac-12 leaders in rushing and one of just two backs in the league who averages more than 100 yards per contest. -- Kevin GemmellJosh Reynolds Texas A&M Aggies Senior | Wide receiver Score: 7.45 Preseason rank: UnrankedReynolds has quietly had a stellar opening month to the season, with 17 receptions (tied for third in the SEC) for 370 yards (also third) and three touchdowns. When accounting for games against only Power 5 opponents, no SEC receiver has more yards than Reynolds (317). -- Sam Khan Jr.James Washington Oklahoma State Cowboys Junior | Wide receiver Score: 7.4 Preseason rank: UnrankedOne of the games best home-run threats has 488 receiving yards on just 25 catches, including a 296-yard performance against Pitt. -- Max OlsonMarquis Haynes Ole Miss Rebels Junior | Defensive lineman Score: 7.35 Preseason rank: UnrankedHaynes does not receive as much attention as the SECs top pass rushers, but he should. Blessed with dynamic speed off the edge, Haynes already has two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. --?David ChingJake Browning Washington Huskies Sophomore | Quarterback Score: 7.3 Preseason rank: 93Washingtons offense rolled through a weak nonconference schedule, and Browning didnt play down to the competition. The Huskies hit a road bump in their first conference game against Arizona but still emerged 4-0. Through four games, Browning has been stellar, tossing 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions while completing 70.5 percent of his throws. -- Kevin GemmellChad Hansen California Golden Bears Junior | Wide receiver Score: 7.25 Preseason rank: UnrankedHansen is the national leader with 50 catches (a whopping 12.5 per game) so far, and he already has 656 receiving yards and six touchdowns, tied for second nationally. Hes leading an undefeated team that is averaging nearly 40 points per game. -- Dan MurphyCurtis Samuel Ohio State Buckeyes Junior | Running back Score: 7.15 Preseason rank: UnrankedMost of the attention might focus on quarterback J.T. Barrett, but Samuels versatility has perhaps made him every bit as valuable for the explosive Buckeyes. Samuel leads Ohio State in receptions after lining up at receiver, he has been more involved as a rusher, with 32 carries already, and hes even taking snaps as a Wildcat quarterback as part of his impressive start to the season. -- Austin WardKD Cannon Baylor Bears Junior | Wide receiver Score: 7.1 Preseason rank: 71Cannon has been slowed by a groin injury but has still put up 360 receiving yards and four scores in limited action. -- Max OlsonJayon Brown UCLA Bruins Senior | Linebacker Score: 7.05 Preseason rank: UnrankedBrown picked up right where he left off the past season, when he was plugged in as Myles Jacks replacement and flourished. But Ballage isnt trading on that one game. He has also scored against UTSA and Northern Arizona, which gives him 10 touchdowns in four games. -- Kevin Gemmell . The Islanders dealt Thomas Vanek to the Montreal Canadiens after less than a year on Long Island. Meanwhile, the Oilers dealt long-time sniper Ales hemsky to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday for a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a third-rounder in 2015. . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. . -- Hunter Smith scored the winner with just 12 seconds remaining in the third period as the Oshawa Generals edged the host Sarnia Sting 5-4 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action. MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City kept pace with likely title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea by beating West Ham 3-1 on Sunday for a third straight victory in the early stages of the English Premier League season. However, what started as a lesson in pass-and-move, attacking football by City under new coach Pep Guardiola turned into a nervy finish at Etihad Stadium.Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho scored in the opening 18 minutes for City, which carved West Ham open at will in a dominant first-half display that showed Guardiolas influence is already rubbing off on his players.Injury-hit West Ham improved in the second half and Michail Antonios 58th-minute header made City work for its win, which was sealed by another goal by Sterling in injury time when he rounded the goalkeeper and scored from a narrow angle. At least one perfect record will go when United plays City at Old Trafford in the first round of games after the international break. Its early days, but it could well be a shootout for the title between the three teams already at the top of the standings. City currently is ahead of United and Chelsea on goal difference -- and Guardiola said there plenty more to come.Of course, there is still room for improvement, Guardiola said, but we have been playing well and hopefully we can continue doing that.We have to make an amazing performance to win at Old Trafford. I can imagine the atmosphere. I am looking forward to live that experience.Arguably Guardiolas biggest achievement in his first few months at Etihad Stadium is getting the best out of Sterling, who lost his place in the team at the end of last season -- his first at City -- and then had a poor European Championship campaign with England. Now, he is showing the kind of form that persuaded City to spend 49 million pounds (then $76 million) to sign him from Liverpool last year. Creating more space for him to run at defenders seems to be the key difference in Sterling this season. We try to help him to say, `If you stay in that position, you receive the ball quicker, Guardiola said. After, when he receives the ball, it is completely his talent. Man City bought this player because they believe.City has won all five of its competitive matches under Guardiola, including two victories over Steaua Bucharest in Champions League qualifying. In the other game Sunday, Middlesbrough maintained its unbeaten start to life back in the Premier League by drawing 0-0 at West Bromwich Albion in a game of few clear-cut chances.Middlesbrough has five points from three games. SEATTLE -- Despite playing only three snaps of Thursdays 27-17 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo came away encouraged that his surgically repaired back is stronger than ever. .Romo immediately reached for his lower back after getting sacked from behind by defensive end Cliff Avril, who jammed Romos back into the turf in the first quarter.Whenever you take a hit, that was a perfect timed situation, Romo said. I was going into a slide. But in a weird way, I feel good about the fact that was probably as tough of a hit Ive taken on the back as Ive had in the last five years. From that regard, I feel very lucky that it can hold up and I can keep going.Romo was held out of the rest of the game by coach Jason Garrett after lobbying to return. Romo did not have any X-rays, but he spent the second half of the game in the locker room.?The Cowboys were expected to determine Friday whether Romos back injury would require an MRI or other testing, a source told ESPNs Ed Werder, but there was no word late Friday night.Initially I think he was in a little bit of shock, Garrett said. He didnt feel real good. But once a little time went by, I think he was feeling better, better and better. We dont think there is anything serious.Owner and general manager Jerry Jones joked that he was spending the night in a Seattle hospital to have his heart tested after seeing his quarterback go down. Romo had his back operated on twice in 2013, and he missed one game in 2014 with two transverse process fractures. Last season, he missed 12 games with a twice-broken left collarbone that required offseason surgery. The Cowboys are 15-4 with Romo as the starter the past two seasons and 1-12 without him.Jones said the back soreness would not limit Romos ability to be ready for the Sept. 11 season opener against the New York Giants.I just think, we, everyone had a scare, Jones said. He was not hurt, and he said he wasnt hurt. He wanted to go back in. He could have gone back in and played. But I praise Jason. It was his decision. After that, you couldnt afford for him to get hurt. You wouldve lost everybody had he walked back out there and gotten hurt, whether it was as a result of the first one or not. That was the smart thing to do for the team, for everybody involved here, is to call it a night for him. Certainly nothing at stake there.Romo has played only 16 snaps in the preseason. The Cowboys close the preseason Sept. 1 against the Houston Texans, but Romo has not played in a preseason finale since 2006. In two preseason games this summer, Romo has completed 5 of 6 passes for 60 yards. At the moment when you go down, you crunch so your back gets squished, I guess you could say, Romo said in describing the feeling of the hit. You almost feel a sensation as if someone gave you a stinger in your shoulder. It just feels hot for a second. That dissipates after a minute and youre OK. All of those things you felt before with back injuries, those are all fine. Then your strength comes back and youre like OK. It just takes a little bit.Garrett would not say whether Romo would play against the Texans. Jones said he has liked what Romo has done in the limited work.Hes looked really good, and of course the real way to evaluate how he looks is out at practice and how hes moving around, Jones said.Since 2013, Romos preseason snaps have diminished each year. He played 69 snaps in three games in 2013, 50 in two games in 2014 and 24 in two games in 2015.I felt great for camp. I felt great going into the game last week, same this week, Romo said. I feel very comfortable whether Im done playing or whatever. Its Coachs call. I just know my job is to get ready to play in the game, and I feel very good about our football team and our offense going forward. I think you guys can see that we have a chance to be a good unit. . -- Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson asked his players a simple question during Fridays morning shootaround: How many of them had ever been on a team 14 games over . . Francis told several hundred members of the European Olympic Committees that when sport "is considered only in economic terms and consequently for victory at every cost . . The Brazilian goalkeeper signed a loan deal with the Major League Soccer club on Friday as he looks to get playing time ahead of this summers World Cup in his home country. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Grade 1 Hopeful was eventful from start to beyond the finish, but when it was over, it had a most appropriate ending as Chad Brown and Jose Ortiz were standing in the Saratoga winners circle on closing day.Practical Joke rallied three wide in the stretch and ran down the pace-setting pair of Royal Copy and Pretty Boy Flash to win Mondays $350,000 Hopeful by a neck. Royal Copy, whose jockey, Luis Saez, dropped his whip at the sixteenth pole, got second by a nose over Pretty Boy Flash. It was 6-3/4 lengths farther back to Bitumen, who was followed by Everybodyluvsrudy and Runaway Lute.Classic Empire, the 8-5 favorite, veered out leaving the gate and unseated jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who fell to the ground. Ortiz actually got up and caught the horse. Classic Empire was vanned off after exhibiting mild lameness, according to New York Racing Association veterinarian Anthony Verderosa.Mark Casse, the trainer of Classic Empire, said later that the horse hit himself on the right foreleg but is okay. After the wire, Runaway Lute, who finished last, fell down, unseating jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. Runaway Lute was deemed fine by his trainer, Gary Contessa. Santana, who was down on the track for a few minutes, got up and was cleared to ride the last race.Meanwhile, Practical Joke gave Brown his 40th win of the meet, a training record for a 40-day Saratoga season. It was also Browns first Grade 1 victory on dirt with a male horse. His other two Grade 1 winners on dirt were Awesome Feather in the Gazelle Stakes and Wavell Avenue in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. It was the 65th win of the meet for Jose Ortiz, who won his first Saratoga riding title by eight wins over his brother Irad. It was also Ortizs first Grade 1 win of the meet.Practical Joke, a son of Into Mischief, raced inside of Bitumen while Pretty Boy Flash and Royal Copy set a moderate pace of 23.80 seconds for the quarter and 47.69 for the half-mile.Ortiz began to ask his horse at the three-furlong pole and swung him three wide approaching the top of the stretch. Meanwhile, Royal Copy, on the inside, and Pretty Boy Flash, on the outside under John Velazquez, were still running in the stretch. In the final furlong, Practical Joke started gaining on the leading duo, and he was able to run them down late.He gave me a great turn of foot when I put him in the clear, but then the other two horses, they went so slow in front that they kept fighting, Ortiz said. As soon as he put the head in front, he kept going.Practical Joke, owned by Seth Klarman and Bill Lawrence, covered the seven furlongs in 1:23.39 and returned $6.20 as the second choice.Brown said hes been impressed with Practical Jokes professionalism from Day 1.For a baby, as well as he ran first time out, as fast he ran on all [speed] figures, Ive never seen this horse rattled at any moment since he came in the barn, Brown said. So professional, and he showed his class today. He was in a box today most of the way, he never panicked, and neither did Jose.
