鈥?Todd Haley’s contract as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers is up.And coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t sound as if he’s in a rush to decide whether Haley will be back next season.Tomlin sidestepped several attempts to endorse Haley’s return on Tuesday as the AFC North champions continued to dissect what went wrong in an upset home playoff loss to Jacksonville . Asked if he anticipated any changes to his staff Tremaine Youth Edmunds Youth Jersey , Tomlin demurred.“I don’t know where these roads are going to lead,” Tomlin said. “Some contracts are up. Some aren’t. I’m not ready to discuss that.”Haley just finished his sixth season with the Steelers and has helped design one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses.Led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, All-Pro running back Le’Veon Bell and All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh (13-3) has finished in the top three in total yards in three of the past four years.Though Haley and Roethlisberger have found a level of detente following a somewhat bumpy start to their relationship, Haley’s occasionally fiery approach has made him a touchstone when things don’t go well. While the Steelers piled up more than 500 yards against the NFL’s top-ranked defense on Sunday, they also made a couple of curious play calls on fourth down that halted their momentum.Bell was stuffed for a loss on a toss play when Pittsburgh needed just 1 yard in the first quarter and Roethlisberger threw incomplete to rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster on fourth down in the fourth quarter when advancing the ball a matter of inches would have extended the drive. The Steelers, however, have gone away from using the quarterback sneak in recent years to help Roethlisberger avoid the contact.Tomlin brushed off the notion that the sneak is no longer a part of the playbook Jordan Whitehead Jersey Buccaneers , saying “to suggest there’s a resistance to it in concept, I’m not ready to say that.”Tomlin also isn’t ready to say much about his staff.Offensive line coach Mike Munchak has interviewed for the open head coaching job in Arizona and wide receivers coach Richard Mann is retiring.Hines Ward, a two-time Super Bowl winner who is also the leading receiver in franchise history, spent time with the team during the season as a volunteer assistant, though Tomlin declined to get into any specifics about any sort of future role for Ward or anybody else for that matter.“I’m not going to have a lot of definitive answers (right now),” Tomlin said. “I don’t want to provide you misinformation.”Tomlin called his 11th season a “wild and challenging and fun ride.”One with more than its fair share of bumps created from within. From the “botched” decision to stay out of sight during the national anthem in Chicago in September to wide receiver Martavis Bryant’s trade demand to Tomlin openly talking about having to face New England twice 鈥?hinting he expected the Steelers to face the Patriots in the AFC championship game more than a month before it would become a reality 鈥?hardly a week passed with the attention focused somewhere other than the field.“We realize oftentimes it may create a storm around us, but that’s not us,” Tomlin said. “We don’t care. We can’t care. We can’t control it anyway.”Not exactly.Outside of linebacker Ryan Shazier’s life-altering spinal injury Cheap Customized Los Angeles Chargers Jerseys , the Steelers created most of the noise that surrounded them. While Tomlin said it’s on him to help his players learn to use the attention directed at them and their own social media agendas “for good” he’s also aware that none of it matters so long as his team wins. For a franchise where success is only measured in Lombardi Trophies, 2017 ended in disappointment, one the Steelers will have a longer than expected offseason to process.“It ended the way it ended and looking back at it, there’s nothing we can do about that other than learn from the experience,” Tomlin said. “Hopefully that strengthens us for our next journey.”One the Steelers are starting earlier than expected.
A look at what’s happening around the majors Wednesday:

The Nationals could use a spark before the July 4 fireworks go off in D.C. Washington is at risk of falling below .500 for the first time since May 2 as it continues a series against Boston at 11 a.m. EDT. The Red Sox thumped the Nationals 11-4 on Tuesday, giving Washington its fourth straight loss and 16th in 21 games to fall to 42-42. That slide has the preseason NL East favorites chasing the Braves and Phillies in the division. Erick Fedde (1-3, 6.00) tries to stop Washington’s skid against Boston left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (9-3, 4.11).

Shohei Ohtani is back from the disabled list Authentic Customized Steelers Jerseys , albeit without full use of his electric right arm. The Japanese two-way sensation has been cleared to hit and was in the Angels’ lineup as a designated hitter Tuesday night, but he won’t be pitching anytime soon due to a Grade 2 sprain of his ulnar collateral ligament suffered more than three weeks ago. Ohtani has received stem cell therapy and a platelet-rich plasma injection on his right elbow, and it’s unclear if he’ll be able to return to the mound this year. For now, Los Angeles welcomes him as a hitter. He entered Tuesday batting .289 with a .907 OPS and six homers in 114 at-bats.

Gerrit Cole (9-2) will pitch on regular rest for the Astros after a slight tweak to their rotation. Lance McCullers Jr. was initially scheduled to start at Texas, but Cole will pitch instead. Justin Verlander (9-4) will follow Thursday at home against the White Sox and McCullers goes Friday. Manager A.J. Hinch said the switch keeps Cole and Verlander pitching every fifth day, and provides extra rest for McCullers (9-3) and Charlie Morton (10-2). The reset rotation means likely All-Star selection Verlander is scheduled for the final game before the break. ”This is always going to be the priority,” said Hinch, the All-Star manager who then won’t have Verlander available to pitch for the AL team on July 17 in Washington D.C.

Trevor Bauer tries to carry over an outstanding June when the Indians play at Kansas City. Bauer (7-6 Derrick Nnadi Jersey Elite , 2.45) was 3-3 with a 2.18 ERA last month, striking out 62 batters in 41 1/3 innings. He gets probably his easiest test of the year against the Royals, who scored a major league-low 58 runs in June – the second-lowest output was Tampa Bay at 87.

OPEN CAMP: July 26 Rasheem Green Jersey Elite , Davie, Florida

LAST YEAR: Dolphins regressed in second season under Adam Gase. As rookie coach he led them to 10 wins and playoff berth, but in 2017 Dolphins never recovered from quarterback Ryan Tannehill's season-ending knee injury in training camp, and deteriorated into wildly inconsistent, undisciplined team. They led to start fourth quarter in only two games and were outscored by 112 points, fourth worst in NFL. Owner Stephen Ross decided to keep organization's core leadership intact, but Gase and executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum may need turnaround to keep jobs beyond this year.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONS: S Minkah Fitzpatrick, G Josh Sitton, DE Robert Quinn, WR Danny Amendola, WR Albert Wilson, C Daniel Kilgore, TE Mike Gesicki, RB Frank Gore , RB Kalen Ballage, QB Brock Osweiler.

IMPORTANT LOSSES: DT Ndamukong Suh, WR Jarvis Landry, C Mike Pouncey, G Jermon Bushrod, K Cody Parkey, QB Jay Cutler, QB Matt Moore, TE Julius Thomas, LB Lawrence Timmons.

CAMP NEEDS: Dolphins will count on two players with no NFL experience to assume significant roles. Linebacker Raekwon McMillan, their most promising rookie in 2017, is back after knee injury in first exhibition game ended his season. Fitzpatrick is expected to make immediate impact after being taken with 11th overall pick in April. Most of all, Gase needs to keep Tannehill healthy as quarterback comes back from two serious injuries to left knee since December 2016.

EXPECTATIONS: Tannehill became starter as rookie in 2012 and has still never taken postseason snap, and there's plenty of reason to doubt that will change this year. While he returns Authentic John Ross Jersey , Dolphins bid adieu to three players with Pro Bowl resumes in Suh, Landry and Pouncey. There were financial reasons, and Gase also wanted change in culture. He believes addition of such veterans as Gore, Amendola and Quinn represents upgrade, but oddsmakers disagree. They project Dolphins to again be six-win team.

Chris Paul is a win away from finally reaching the Western Conference finals in his 10th season in the playoffs.

But the Houston guard isn’t looking ahead to what most expect will be a showdown with the defending champion Golden State Warriors in the next round.

After all, he’s been in this situation before in 2015 with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Paul is normally reticent to discuss his past playoff failures, but the nine-time All-Star was candid about that particular letdown when he was interviewed on TNT moments after Houston took a 3-1 lead over the Utah Jazz with a 100-87 win in Game 5.

He was asked if he’s allowed himself to think about being in the finals for the first time.

”It’s the process man,” he said. ”I’ve been here before, 3-1. (Expletive) went bad real quick, you know what I mean?”

The collapse that Paul is referring to came at the hands of the Rockets. Paul and the Clippers raced out to a 3-1 lead in the conference semifinals. They got blown out in Game 5, wasted a 19-point second-half lead in a loss in Los Angeles in Game 6, then fell in Game 7 at Houston.

Paul got prickly later when asked to expand on his comments and share what he learned from that series. He deflected the question with a joke before finally mumbling: `don’t relax,’ before James Harden stepped in to save his teammate from the uncomfortable moment.

”He’s not even thinking about that honestly,” Harden said. ”We’ve got a game on Tuesday and we’re going to do whatever it takes to close it out.”

Houston’s game against Utah is one of two games on Tuesday. In the other game Justin Jones Jersey Chargers , the Warriors also have a chance to finish off their series with the New Orleans Pelicans after taking a 3-1 lead with a 118-92 win on Sunday.

This is Paul’s fifth appearance in the conference semifinals after losing to the Spurs 4-3 in 2008 while with New Orleans, being swept by San Antonio in 2012 with the Clippers and losing 4-2 to the Thunder with that team before that 2015 debacle against the Rockets.

Coach Mike D’Antoni said the most important quality Paul has brought to the Rockets in his first year with the team is his toughness and edge. He doesn’t expect to see anything different out of him on Tuesday despite having the opportunity to finally shed the label that he can’t get out of the second round.

”It’s hard to go up another notch. I think he’s on full-tilt all the time,” D’Antoni said. ”You’d have to talk to him a little bit (but) I’m sure it’s on his mind.”

For the Jazz, they’re hoping that they can recreate the success they had in Game 2 when they led by as many as 19 points early, and held on for a 116-108 win.

”We were on a different level in Game 2 and I think we’ve just got to get back to that,” rookie Donovan Mitchell said.

Utah could get a boost in Game 6 with the return of Ricky Rubio. He’s missed the entire series with a strained left hamstring, but was listed as questionable before Sunday’s game and could be well enough to play on Tuesday.

However, they could be without reserve point guard Dante Exum in Game 6 after he left Sunday’s game in the third quarter with soreness in his left hamstring.

Here’s a closer look at the Pelicans-Warriors game.

Warriors lead series 3-1. Game 5, 10:30 p.m. EDT, TNT

NEED TO KNOW: The Warriors have been dominant on their home floor for two straight postseasons, having won a franchise-record 14 consecutive playoff games at Oracle Arena and already closed out the Spurs at Oakland in Game 5.

With a 15th straight home playoff win, the Warriors would tie Chicago for an NBA record. The Bulls did so from April 27, 1990, to May 21 Authentic Malik Jefferson Jersey , 1991.

”We’ve got to win one game at Oracle and that’s the one that we play next,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. ”That’s as far as we need to look. Obviously it’s a monumental task. It’s been done before. As I said to the guys, `We just got to go and play and you’re not out until they win four games.”’

KEEP ANY EYE ON: Stephen Curry continues to find his groove and this will be his fourth game back from nearly six weeks sidelined with a sprained left knee. His minutes are increasing each game he plays, up to 31 in Game 4.

Curry is 22 for 51 with 12 3s so far this series.

TOUGH CHALLENGE: The Pelicans never know which Golden State star might be on any given night – or all of them at once.

The Warriors led wire to wire in Game 4 following its 19-point embarrassment in Game 3. Kevin Durant is coming off a 38-point performance, but it could be Klay Thompson’s turn, or Draymond Green chasing another triple-double.

”The bigger the game the better Draymond plays,” coach Steve Kerr said, ”the more intense he is, the more focus he has. He’s going against Anthony Davis night after night and just doing an amazing job in concert with his teammates. Draymond’s a rare guy. Every time the moment gets bigger, he gets better and not everybody can say that.”

Durant has scored 20 or more points in 16 straight postseason games.

PRIORITY ON SHOOTING: Gentry gives New Orleans little chance of staying in the series and staving off elimination without a big scoring performance. The Pelicans lost 118-92 on Sunday and shot just 36.4 percent – 32 of 88 and 4 for 26 on 3-pointers.

”You’re not going to beat them if you’re not going to score 115 points, I don’t care how good your defense is,” .

OPEN CAMP: July 26 Rashaan Evans Jersey Elite , Greenbrier, West Virginia

LAST YEAR: Texans had first losing record since 2013 as they dealt with numerous injuries, including to rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson and superstar defensive end J.J. Watt. Watson was bright spot in disappointing season for his play in seven games before he tore anterior cruciate ligament in right knee in practice. He threw for 1,699 yards and 19 touchdowns, giving Texans hope they’ve finally found franchise quarterback after years of misfires and disappointment. Another positive was continued improvement of 2014 top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney. Defensive end finished second in NFL with career-high 21 tackles for losses and his 9 1/2 sacks, 21 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles were also career bests. He had career-high 59 tackles and started all 16 games for first time in career after struggling with injuries in first two NFL seasons before playing 14 games in 2016

IMPORTANT ADDITIONS: S Tyrann Mathieu, G Senio Kelemete Kenny Young Jersey Elite , G Zach Fulton, OT Seantrel Henderson, CB Aaron Colvin, QB Brandon Weeden.

IMPORTANT LOSSES: LB Brian Cushing, OT Jeff Allen, OL Xavier Su’a-Filo.

CAMP NEEDS: Texans will have eye on two of their biggest stars who are returning to field after sustaining season-ending injuries last season. Watson must show surgically repaired right knee has healed and that he still has same burst and playmaking ability he showed as rookie last season. After Watt played eight games over last two seasons because of injuries, including broken left leg last season Authentic Justin Upton Jersey , Houston must see if Watt can return to Defensive Player of Year form. Texans will also use camp to see how offensive line fits together and hope revamped group protects QB much better than last season, when team allowed second-most sacks in NFL.

EXPECTATIONS: If Watson is healthy and can build on limited work as rookie, Houston’s offense will be much better. Defensive front will get boost if Watt can stay on field to play with Clowney, and secondary should be much improved with addition of Mathieu and Colvin. With Watson and Watt leading team, Texans should shake off last season’s struggles to contend for third AFC South title in four years.

After splitting a four-game weekend set in Seattle, the Boston Red Sox return to work Tuesday night when they open a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

The Red Sox went into their off day on Monday just a half-game behind the New York Yankees, but they have won six of their last nine games thanks to a starting rotation that has been among the best in baseball during the last two weeks.

Chris Sale will look to keep that going Tuesday when he takes the mound for his 16th start of the season. The left-hander snapped a three-start losing streak his last time out Chiefs Authentic Jerseys , allowing just a run in six innings of a 5-1 victory over Baltimore.

Sale had allowed 10 runs in 10 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros on May 27 and June 1, respectively. He rebounded by holding the Chicago White Sox to a run in eight innings while striking out two on June 8 in a 1-0 Red Sox loss before getting back in the win column against the Orioles.

“I have a good rhythm and tempo going for me right now,” said Sale, who has held opponents to no more than a run in nine starts this season. “I’m feeling good. That’s the way I like it.”

He’s 10-6 with a 4.21 ERA in 26 career appearances (18 starts) against the Twins, who also had Monday off after a 3-3 road trip that saw them drop two of three to the Detroit Tigers and take two of three from the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

They’ll begin the day third in the division, five games behind Cleveland and 2 1/2 behind Detroit.

“It was a good series win (in Cleveland),” third baseman Eduardo Escobar said. “We’ll be ready Tuesday for another series at home. This team will be OK. We go out there and play hard every day , but sometimes you have to give credit to the other pitchers.”

The Twins will turn to their own budding ace for the series opener.

Right-hander Jose Berrios is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last six starts. He has allowed more than two runs just once during that stretch and has struck out 51 while walking only 12 in 43 2/3 innings, including 24 strikeouts with two walks in his last three outings.

Berrios took no-decision his last time out. He held the Tigers to a run, seven hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings, but the Twins’ offense and bullpen couldn’t get the job done in a 5-2 loss.

“He threw a hell of a game,” reliever Addison Reed said afterward. “That was fun to watch. He works his tail off, and it shows when he’s out there. The thing that I’m most (upset) about tonight is not getting him the ‘W.'”

Berrios has one previous career start against the Red Sox. He allowed four runs and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings of a 4-1 loss at Fenway Park last season.

Justin Smoak isn’t a fan of extra innings Joe Montana 49ers Jersey , so he was doubly happy about his game-winning homer against the slumping Detroit Tigers.

Smoak led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Detroit 4-3 on Saturday, handing the Tigers their 11th straight loss.

”Honestly, nobody wants to play extra innings,” Smoak said. ”To be able to do it in the ninth and get it over with is always a good feeling.”

This is Detroit’s longest losing streak since an 11-game skid in August 2003, the year the Tigers lost 119 times. The Tigers last lost 12 straight in 1996.

Three of Detroit’s 11 defeats, including the past two, have been one-run losses. The Tigers are 13-13 in one-run decisions.

”There’s things we can do better but we’re not playing bad,” Tigers starter Matt Boyd said. ”It may seem dire Barkevious Mingo Color Rush Jersey , but it’s not. We’re close to where we want to be and we’re going to come out on the other end of this.”

Smoak connected against reliever Joe Jimenez (3-1) for his 11th homer of the season. It was the second walk-off drive of his career, with the other coming in 2016 against Texas.

Smoak, who hit a two-run homer in Friday’s 3-2 win, has gone deep in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

”I’m just trying to be aggressive and it’s been better as of late,” he said.

Seunghwan Oh (4-2) worked one inning for the win. Randal Grichuk also homered for the Blue Jays, who have won 10 of 11 at home.

John Hicks hit a solo homer in the Detroit second off Sam Gaviglio and Nick Castellanos made it 3-0 with a two-run shot in the third, his 12th.

Boyd held the Blue Jays hitless until Kevin Pillar’s leadoff double in the fifth. Pillar moved to third on a one-out single by Aledmys Diaz and scored on a groundout by Devon Travis before Grichuk hit his tying homer.

”He was leaving the ball up just a little too much where they could get the bat head to it,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Boyd allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

”I made a few mistakes today and one of them went over the fence Terrell Edmunds Steelers Jersey ,” Boyd said.

Gaviglio gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings, matching his longest outing of the season.

Leonys Martin and Castellanos hit consecutive singles off Joe Biagini in the eighth but the Blue Jays right-hander retired the next three batters in order.

”We had runners in position a couple of times,” Gardenhire said. ”We just didn’t come up with the big one.”

Martin helped preserve the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth by throwing out Travis at home plate. Travis was trying to score from second on Yangervis Solarte’s single to center, but couldn’t beat Martin’s one-hop throw. The assist was Martin’s ninth, tying him with Seattle’s Mitch Haniger for the AL lead.

With a heat alert in place for Toronto, the retractable roof at Rogers Centre was kept closed. The outdoor temperature was 88 degrees, with high humidity making it feel like 106.

Detroit has lost 12 of 14 in Toronto.

Blue Jays C Luke Maile threw out two runners attempting to steal, both at second base. Maile threw out Jeimer Candelario in the first and Grayson Greiner in the seventh.

Tigers: RHP Alex Wilson had to leave in the eighth because of a sore left calf. Wilson missed almost a month earlier this season because of a strain in his left foot. … RHP Drew VerHagen (nasal fracture) will join Triple A Toledo Saturday night to begin an injury rehabilitation assignment. VerHagen has been out since June 20.

Blue Jays: Toronto put RHP Ryan Tepera (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled RHP Jake Petricka from Triple-A Buffalo.

Tigers RHP Jordan Zimmermann (2-0 Jeremiah Attaochu Color Rush Jersey , 4.35) faces Blue Jays LHP J.A. Happ (10-3, 3.62) on Canada Day in Toronto. Zimmermann allowed seven runs in his previous start against Toronto on June 8, 2016. Happ has won six straight decisions and is unbeaten in eight outings.

James Harden had another huge third quarter to propel the Houston Rockets to their latest win Markus Wheaton Color Rush Jersey , and coach Mike D’Antoni wants to know what’s behind those scoring bursts.

”When you do talk to him about it, would you let me know, because I’m dying in the first half. My health is an issue,” D’Antoni said with a laugh.

Clint Capela had 26 points and 15 rebounds, Harden added 24 points and the Rockets pulled away in the third quarter to get another lopsided win and eliminate the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 122-104 victory in Game 5 of the first-round series Wednesday night.

The top-seeded Rockets are headed to the second round for the second year in a row after taking care of the eighth-seeded Timberwolves. Minnesota was in the postseason for the first time since 2004.

Houston will await the winner of the Utah-Oklahoma City series, which the Jazz lead 3-2 after the Thunder rallied from a big deficit Wednesday night to avoid elimination.

After scoring 22 points in Houston’s 50-point third quarter in a Game 4 blowout Monday night, Harden poured in half of Houston’s 30 points in the third quarter Wednesday night to put the Rockets up for good. His 15 third-quarter points matched Minnesota’s output in the frame , and he finished with 12 assists.

”I knew that Minnesota wasn’t going to just go away,” he said. ”We had to do the right things to put them away.”

Karl-Anthony Towns led the Timberwolves with 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Jamal Crawford added 20 points off the bench.

”It’s a major jump from where we were two years ago,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. ”We have to take all the things we learned this past season and make a commitment to continue to improve.”

Paul and Harden both raved about the work of Capela, who throughout the series has outshined Towns, an All-Star this season and the top overall pick in 2015.

”He opens up everything for us because he’s such a threat when he rolls to the rim,” Paul said.

Towns believes the experience of his first trip to the postseason will help him moving forward.

”We hadn’t been there in like 14 years so it was experience that needed to be garnered and we wanted to take that next step ,” he said. ”We came up short tonight but we’re very confident in ourselves leading up to next year.”

Andrew Wiggins scored the last four points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 85-74 entering the fourth quarter. The Rockets used a 7-2 spurt, highlighted by a 3 from Ryan Anderson, to start the fourth and make it 92-76 with 9 1/2 minutes left.

A basket by Derrick Rose got Minnesota within 14 later in the fourth when Houston went on a 10-4 run to push the lead to 108-88 with less than five minutes to go.

The Wolves got consecutive 3s by Jamal Crawford and Wiggins to cut the lead after that, but the Rockets scored the next five points to end that run and cruise to the victory.

The Rockets opened the second half with a 10-2 run to erase a halftime deficit and take a 65-61 lead with about nine minutes left in the third. Paul, who finished with 12 points and nine assists, had four points in that stretch and Harden and P.J. Tucker added 3-pointers.

Minnesota scored the next five points to go back on top, but Harden scored five quick points after that to leave the Rockets ahead 70-66. Harden Brandon Parker Color Rush Jersey , who had just five points at halftime, hit a 3 before throwing down a one-handed dunk over Taj Gibson that prompted Minnesota Thibodeau to call a timeout.

The timeout didn’t do anything to slow Harden and the Rockets, and he added another 3 on Houston’s first possession after the timeout.

Towns added a basket after that before Houston scored the next eight points to extend the lead to 81-68 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the quarter.

Things got a little testy after that when Crawford pushed Paul to the court and stood over him jawing. Paul got to his feet and got in his face, but the two were quickly separated and Crawford was given an offensive foul and a technical.

Timberwolves: Tyus Jones returned after sitting out in Game 4 with a sore knee. … Jimmy Butler had eight points before sitting out the fourth because of a sore knee and Wiggins finished with 14. … Jeff Teague scored 17 and had seven assists.

Rockets: D’Antoni said that Luc Mbah a Moute, who missed the entire first round after dislocating his right shoulder, is getting better and will be re-evaluated next week. … Eric Gordon scored 19 points. … Tucker finished with a playoff career-high 15 points.

The Rockets made a series-high 18 3-pointers on Wednesday night. They’ve made at least 15 3-pointers in their last four games, which is tied with Cleveland in 2016 for the longest streak in NBA playoff history. Last season Houston made 15 or more 3-pointers in just three of their 11 playoff games.

The Rockets will host the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals against the winner of the Jazz-Thunder series.

A person familiar with the situation says Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry’s contract option for next season has been exercised by the club.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club has not announced the move. The person says Gentry was informed of the decision before the Pelicans swept their first-round playoff series against third-seeded Portland.

ESPN first reported the club’s move.

Gentry is in his third season with the Pelicans and has gone 116-134 Tre'Davious White Jersey , including four victories in this season’s playoffs.

New Orleans missed the playoffs during Gentry’s first two seasons, during which the team was hampered by a combination of key injuries or other matters that caused extended absences of key personnel.

The last time the Atlanta Falcons picked an Alabama receiver in the first round of the NFL draft Isaiah Oliver Falcons Jersey , it worked out pretty well.

So, when Calvin Ridley was still on the board Thursday night at No. 26, they knew what to do.

Roll Tide!

The Falcons landed another Nick Saban receiver for their offensive arsenal, adding Ridley to a unit led by Julio Jones .

Jones, of course, played at Alabama.

Now, he's one of the NFL's best pass catchers.

Ridley can't wait to team up with him.

"I'm very excited to be coming in with Julio," Ridley said in a conference call, shortly after the Falcons announced their pick near the end of the draft's first day. "I know I'm going to learn a lot from him and become a better player Bears Game Jerseys , a better wide receiver. I'm just very, very happy to be in that organization."

His excitement was tempered somewhat by where he was picked in the draft .

Flashing the confidence that is a trademark of all great receivers, Ridley was clearly surprised that he didn't go much higher.

"I'm going to prove a lot of people wrong," he said. "I'm happy the Falcons selected me, but I could've been picked way before. I'm going to work hard and I'm going to prove everybody wrong who always doubted me. I'm going to make everybody believe."

The Falcons were eager to give quarterback Matt Ryan another deep threat, bolstering an offense that dipped in production last season after leading the NFL in scoring in 2016.

While defensive tackle was a priority, Atlanta couldn't pass up the chance to grab the 6-foot-1, 189-pound Ridley, who managed to stand out even while playing in a run-oriented offense on Alabama's national championship team . As a junior Authentic Will Hernandez Jersey , he had 63 receptions for 967 yards and five touchdowns.

"This is another firepower weapon for us," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. "He will mix in very well in our offense."

In 2011, the Falcons pulled off a major trade with Cleveland to move up to No. 6 overall so they could grab Jones. He quickly emerged as one of the league's most dominant receivers, including 88 catches for 1,444 yards last season.

While Mohamed Sanu has put up decent numbers as the No. 2 receiver, he's not the sort of game-changer who can draw coverages away from Jones.

The Falcons feel Ridley has that potential.

"His ability to create separation from the defender is really powerful and explosive," coach Dan Quinn said. "We have a clear understanding of how to feature this guy in our system. We're real excited about the things he can do."

In an interesting twist, the final game of Ridley's college career was at the home of the Falcons. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted this year's thrilling national championship game , in which Ridley caught a 7-yard touchdown pass that tied the game in the closing minutes of regulation before Alabama defeated Southeastern Conference rival Georgia 26-23 in overtime.

Ridley will also be reunited with Steve Sarkisian Cheap Avonte Maddox Jersey , who was briefly the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator before taking the same role with the Falcons.

"He was real cool," Ridley recalled. "He was trying to get me that ball, I know that."

While the Falcons had no overly pressing needs after their second straight trip to the playoffs, they were looking to bulk up the interior of the defensive line. Dontari Poe was lost in free agency, signing with division rival Carolina to leave a hole in Atlanta's run defense.

But with Ridley still on the board, the Falcons decided to address those needs later in the draft. They passed on the chance to draft another SEC player, Florida defensive tackle Taven Bryan, who went shortly afterward to the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 29.

"We definitely had other guys in our sights," Dimitroff said. "They're both very good football players. In the end Cheap Lorenzo Carter Jersey , we decided to go with offense."

It was a change of philosophy from the last three years.

Since Quinn came aboard as coach in 2015, defense had been the No. 1 priority. The last three first-round picks were all from that side of the line: defensive end Vic Beasley Jr. in 2015, safety Keanu Neal in 2016 and end Takkarist McKinley a year ago.

Quinn smiled when asked if it was difficult to pass up another defensive player.

"We were prepared to go a couple of different ways," Quinn said. "When this opportunity came about, we felt it was the best one for our team."

The Oakland Raiders have traded fullback Jamize Olawale to the Dallas Cowboys in a deal that also includes a swap of picks in the upcoming NFL draft.

Dallas sent Oakland one of its two fifth-round picks (No. 173 overall) in exchange for a sixth-round pick (No. 192 overall). The Cowboys now have three picks in the sixth round.

Olawale went to training camp with the Cowboys in 2012 and was on their practice squad before going to the Raiders and making his NFL debut by playing in the last three games that season. He has played in 77 career games.

The deal announced Tuesday came only five days after fullback Keith Smith left the Cowboys to sign a two-year deal with the Raiders.

鈥?New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson faces a slew of charges in Florida Tremaine Edmunds Jersey Elite , including threatening a police officer’s family and saying he would rape the officer’s wife.A Sunrise police report shows the 24-year-old Anderson was stopped early Friday in a sport utility vehicle after it ran two red lights and was swerving while traveling about 105 mph (170 kph) in a 45 mph zone. After he was stopped, police say he made the threats and then boasted about how much money he has. Jail records show Anderson faces nine charges, including threatening harm to a public servant, resisting arrest and traffic violations. The records don’t list an attorney for Anderson.“This is a pending legal matter and we will have no further comments,” the Jets said in a statement. The NFL is also aware of the situation and league spokesman Brian McCarthy said “we will be looking into this matter.”This is the latest legal trouble for Anderson, a 2011 graduate of South Plantation High School. He was arrested in May and charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice after sparring with officials who asked him to leave a Miami music festival. Anderson’s next scheduled court date for that incident is on March 19.The league is also investigating that incident, and Anderson could face punishment from the NFL under its conduct policy.Anderson set career highs with 63 catches, 941 yards receiving and seven touchdowns in his second season with the Jets. He was a bright spot in the team’s 5-11 season and appeared on his way to a 1,000-yard campaign until quarterback Josh McCown went down with a broken left hand in Week 14.Anderson went undrafted out of Temple in 2016 and signed with New York as a free agent. He made the opening day roster with an outstanding training camp and finished with 42 catches for 587 yards and two TDs. Anderson flourished in the Jets’ offense this season, establishing himself as one of the top young speed receivers in the league.
The NFL's offseason features plenty of intrigue beyond where Kirk Cousins and dozens of other quarterbacks will land.

As the Philadelphia Eagles enjoy the city's first NFL title since 1960 and the New England Patriots smart over their failure to win a sixth ring Rick Leonard Color Rush Jersey , 30 other teams are plotting to unseat the conference kings.

That appears to be a tougher task in the AFC than in the NFC, where the Vikings, Saints and Rams all are on the rise and the Pack promises to get back with Aaron Rodgers under center again.

DeShaun Watson's comeback from a torn ACL could put the Texans in the mix along with the resurgent Jaguars to wrest the Lamar Hunt Trophy from the grasp of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels, whose reneging on the Colts coaching job reignited the animosity between Indy and New England.

At league headquarters, Roger Goodell wants to see the mystery of the NFL's catch rule solved.

Five cities are building their case to host the league's annual draft in 2019 or 2020. This year's extravaganza will be held April 26-28 in Jerry's backyard at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

On Tuesday, teams can designate franchise or transition players and in a week they'll all be at the NFL combine in Indianapolis to take a gander at this year's top college prospects.

Free agency starts March 14 with the new league year and that's when the QB dominoes will start to fall.

Teams that hired a new coach this year 鈥?the Cardinals, Bears, Lions , Colts, Giants, Raiders and Titans 鈥?get to begin offseason workouts April 2. Everyone else starts two weeks later.

While baseballs soar and basketballs bounce over the next few months, some story lines that will provide a football fix:

KIRK COUSINS' NEXT DESTINATION : With Washington acquiring Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs, Cousins will say goodbye to the Redskins and hello to the really big bucks. The Broncos, Jets and Cardinals could jockey to see who will pay Cousins $30 million annually.

JOHN ELWAY'S NEXT COMEBACK : The Broncos boss wants to quit fretting over the position he knows the most about. Landing Cousins or one of the top college QBs will allow him to move on from Paxton Lynch, Brock Osweiler and Trevor Siemian, who all started during Denver's 5-11 face-plant.

WHICH QB WILL GO NO. 1 ? Teams that miss out on one of the prized free agents can look to the draft, which features Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen Josh Allen Jersey , Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, who are all expected to be selected in the top 10 picks. But in which order? Lamar Jackson and Mason Rudolph could join them as first-rounders.

WILL ANDREW LUCK PLAY? Some believe the impetus for McDaniels backing out of the Colts job was the uncertainty surrounding QB Andrew Luck, who missed all of last season following shoulder surgery. Luck hopes to resume his career in 2018, but he still hasn't thrown a football since October

DID INDY LUCK OUT? McDaniels' brush-off led the Colts to hiring ex-Eagles OC Frank Reich, who got glowing endorsements from former team president Bill Polian, ex-coach Tony Dungy and former QB Peyton Manning. Reich figured to be atop the list of hot head coaching candidates next winter, so this was a jump-start.

HOW WILL RAIDERS MESH? Last summer, Oakland QB Derek Carr signed a five-year, $125 million contract. This winter, Jon Gruden signed a 10-year Authentic Jake Arrieta Jersey , $100 million deal to return to the sideline from the broadcast booth. Now, it's time for Gruden and Carr to make it work together.

WILL PATS DEFY TIME? Brady and Belichick failed to win a sixth ring when the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles. But McDaniels couldn't leave the soon-to-be 41-year-old QB coming off an MVP season. Opponents continue to wonder when Brady will hit that wall and quit being so frustratingly good.

WHO WILL LEAD MINNESOTA? The Vikings are in an odd situation at quarterback. They have an abundance in Case Keenum, who was a suburb fill-in with Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Bradford hurt. They're both getting healthy but none of the three are under contract for next season.

WHAT'S THE PANTHERS' FUTURE? While former U.S. attorney Mary Jo White looks into claims of sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace against Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, potential buyers are exploring purchasing the team. Goodell says he wants the team to remain in Charlotte under the new owners.

WHO WILL WOW NFL ?: Denver, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Nashville and Cleveland-Canton are hoping to land the NFL draft in either 2019 or 2020. Representatives for each site will offer presentations before the final selections are made in May at the NFL spring meetings in Atlanta.

When Jimmy Butler went down with a torn meniscus in his knee Adidas Nathan MacKinnon Jersey , the Minnesota Timberwolves were in first place in the Northwest Division and on pace to make the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.

Butler is Minnesota’s leader, and without him a playoff spot that seemed almost assured has become uncertain. The Timberwolves are 8-8 since Butler was injured Feb. 23 but still hold the seventh seed in the Western Conference. They control their own postseason destiny, including two games against the Denver Nuggets, who are chasing one of those final two seeds. The Nuggets are one game behind the Timberwolves and the New Orleans Pelicans, who are tied for the seventh in the Western Conference.

The good news for Minnesota (44-34) is Butler has gone through a full practice and is nearing a return. The bad news is he probably won’t be back for Thursday’s game in Denver.

Even if he isn’t playing, Butler’s presence could make a difference. He has been to the postseason with Chicago and he knows what it takes, so he was blunt in his assessment of what the Timberwolves need right now.

“We just gotta get tougher,” Butler told The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “We gotta play like some dogs with a sense of urgency. Teams just do whatever they want against us. I don’t like it.

“Ain’t no coach in the world that can make somebody play hard. Ain’t no coach in the world that can make anybody want it. Right now, in the position we are … we gotta realize that as a whole, we got to go out there and be the tougher team every single night, every single possession.”

The Nuggets (43-35) seem to have grasped that mentality, and maybe just in time. After losing to Memphis and Miami — the latter in double overtime — to start a recent seven-game road trip they have started to play harder.

They rallied in Oklahoma City on Friday night and at home against Milwaukee on Sunday, wiping out late deficits in both games and winning in overtime. They didn’t need an extra period to beat a hot Indiana team on Tuesday, so there are indications they have found the right sense of urgency.

“We can’t worry about what other teams are doing,” said Wilson Chandler, who is using a mask to protect a nasal fracture. “We have to keep winning Authentic Shaquem Griffin Jersey , keep playing for one another and doing the right things.”

Denver has gone 5-4 since guard Gary Harris went down with a right knee sprain by getting heavy production from Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Will Barton and Paul Millsap. Jokic, who had 30 points, seven assists and six rebounds against the Pacers, is averaging 25.1 points and 11.3 rebounds in the last 10 games.

He will pose a tough matchup for Minnesota center Karl-Anthony Towns, but the Timberwolves can’t sleep on Murray. The point guard is averaging 19.2 points in the last 10 games and has picked up his scoring since Harris, the team’s second-leading scorer, went down March 15.

Murray, in his second season and just 21, has emerged as a leader, and he is focused on making the playoffs. But he is not looking past Thursday.

“It’s another game you’ve got to win,” Murray said after Tuesday’s win. “I’m not going to say it’s another game you’ve got to win with an exclamation mark. Just got to go out there with the same energy and make sure everybody’s locked in from the jump.”

Butler may not play Thursday but he should be back when the teams meet on the final day of the season. A playoff spot could be on the line for one of them then.

鈥?The idea began to percolate about 2陆 years ago, in discussions between Kirk Cousins and agent Mike McCartney about his status with the Washington Redskins and his future in the NFL.The goal was to get a fully guaranteed contract, the security players in this league of high turnover and short shelf lives have sought for decades, unlike their peers in professional baseball Cheap Customized Buffalo Bills Jerseys , basketball and hockey who are accustomed to guaranteed money. This week, when Cousins finally reached free agency after two consecutive seasons playing on the franchise tag, the Minnesota Vikings made that once-unrealistic aspiration happen with an $84 million, three-year deal.“It took a great player to come to the market, and it’s not easy to get to the market with great players,” McCartney said. “It’s just the way it turned out. It’s been an exciting several weeks in anticipation. We researched all fall, the different teams and potential options. At one point, we never thought that the Vikings would need a quarterback and yet still did our research and homework on them. As we got closer to free agency, I had a feeling we were going to have an opportunity.”As a low draft pick who was forced to work his way up the depth chart and has never won a postseason game, Cousins represented an unlikely candidate to set the precedent. The market always flows toward the demand, though, and because Washington was lukewarm on his long-term potential, Cousins was able to make about $44 million over the last two years and still hit free agency in his prime with no history of significant injury. The Redskins declined to use the franchise tag a third time and acquired Alex Smith in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs instead. That allowed a player who topped 4,000 passing yards in three straight seasons to cash in on the volume of quarterback-needy teams in the NFL, where there’s perpetually a short supply of true superstars at the most challenging of all positions.“It would be great if this would be a game changer and started a trend. Hopefully, there are some high-profile guys who can build on this and go beyond Kirk’s money but still have a fully guaranteed contract Cheap Frank Ragnow Jersey ,” McCartney said, adding: “It’s time for it to happen.”The Vikings were the other critical part of this equation, of course. They drafted Teddy Bridgewater in the first round in 2014 with the expectation he’d become their franchise quarterback, but he wrecked his knee right before the 2016 season and has yet to start a game since then. His replacement, Sam Bradford, became a free agent. So did his super sub, Case Keenum. With a roster on the cusp of a Super Bowl, having lost to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game, the Vikings were more than willing to be as aggressive as they needed to acquire the quarterback they believed was the best available free agent.“I don’t know where it’s going to go,” Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said. “But I know when a player of this caliber gets out there on the market and he’s been franchised two years in a row, and it’s the quarterback position, you’re going to have to do what you have to do. If we didn’t, I know a lot of other teams out there would have.”The Vikings didn’t offer Cousins the most overall money, McCartney said, but they were confident enough in Cousins to commit to not only the largest per-year average in NFL history (topping Jimmy Garoppolo) but the biggest guaranteed figure the league has seen (beating Matthew Stafford). Those benchmarks will be temporary, of course Braden Smith Colts Jersey , with quarterbacks of greater ability and accomplishment like Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan in the queue for contract extensions with their clubs. The ice has at least been chipped, though, if not broken wide open.“It won’t matter if other players after me choose to go a different route,” Cousins said at his introductory news conference on Thursday. “It is what it is for my situation, but players after me have to decide what they want to do.”There are a number of complex reasons why NFL contracts have so rarely been guaranteed like those in MLB, the NBA or the NHL, with one being a decades-old clause in the collective bargaining agreement that requires teams to put deferred guaranteed money in escrow. That was devised before the league’s revenue boom to ensure teams wouldn’t run out of cash to pay players. Now, the rule can simply deter deep-pocketed owners from granting long-term, guaranteed deals that require cutting massive checks that won’t be cashed for years.“Now we have so much TV money that it’s completely unnecessary from my vantage point,” McCartney said. The key to making this a trend instead of a footnote will be more players willing to take shorter contracts. If Cousins asked for a five-year deal, the total value likely wouldn’t have been much higher if at all. In so many contracts over the course of the modern NFL, the maximum value was never paid out because teams were able to cut an aged or underperforming players without being on the hook for much if any guaranteed money in the latter part of the deal.McCartney acknowledged his confidence level of fulfilling this goal was relatively low when he first approached the Redskins about a new contract for his client. Cousins picked the Vikings for more than just the desirability of their offer. They provided him the best championship opportunity of all the suitors, and he raved about the culture and leadership he discovered through his research and initial visit to team headquarters.“Just so grateful for the way things have played out,” Cousins said. “I wouldn’t change anything that has happened for the world. Now I’m just excited to look forward to all that is in store.”.

Sean Lee responded with strong words to criticism from former teammate Dez Bryant.

Tyrone Crawford felt compelled to tell the team these Dallas Cowboys won't be in the business of dramas such as Bryant's Twitter-fed rant early in training camp over who he felt was responsible for his offseason release.

With tight end Jason Witten's sudden retirement after 15 years for a TV job Joe Mixon Jersey , the Cowboys can't defer to the franchise leader in games, starts and catches on any number of topics. Crawford, a defensive lineman, doesn't think they can replace the 2012 NFL Man of the Year either.

"If you're being real with yourself, Jason Witten's one of the best ever to do it," Crawford said. "And if you knew him as a man, one of the best men you'll ever get to meet. To me, there's never going to be another Jason Witten that's going to be around me."

Still, the Cowboys have to figure out life without Witten's leadership. Ask around, the answers will vary.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is a natural choice, both through leadership skills he demonstrated before replacing Tony Romo and the fact that the 25-year-old is already going into this third season as the starter.

Lee M.J. Stewart Color Rush Jersey , now Dallas' only offensive or defensive player in his 30s (he's 31), always used to wait until the end of the week to address reporters in the locker room during the season. There's talk of him moving that up to be more visible, and the 2016 All-Pro has left no doubt he knows things are different without Witten.

Center Travis Frederick and Zack Martin, who just signed a contract making him the highest-paid guard in the NFL, come up as well. But Frederick stops short of the idea of leadership by committee.

"Committee makes it sound like it's a huge group of guys," said Frederick, who started all 80 games in his first five seasons. "Traditionally in a team like this, you have a group of captains that are a strong group of leaders, maybe five, six guys. I think you're going to find that here.

"But there's been a lot of guys in training. I think that Dak is one of the guys that's most naturally a leader that I've ever been around in my life."

Bryant shockingly called Lee a "snake" on Twitter while suggesting the ninth-year linebacker had a hand in the club's decision to move on from its career leader in touchdown receptions.

Equally shocking was Lee's response, acknowledging that he and Bryant had been at odds over Lee's feeling that Bryant wasn't always accountable. Lee even suggested Bryant still wasn't holding himself accountable. It was the first time Lee had been forced to defend himself on such terms Dan Bailey Cowboys Jersey , and he left no doubt how he felt.

"I've been in a leadership role for a long time now and I need to take it to that next level," Lee said. "But there's also, we have a core group of guys. We have a lot of guys where it's easy to be a leader on this football team because of how many great leaders we have, all the way through, from the top to bottom."

Crawford, a seventh-year player who has been growing into a leadership role over several seasons, wasn't happy that the team found itself in the middle of an unexpected tiff.

"When it comes to things like that and getting focused, I get angry and I say what I want to say and that's what it is," Crawford said. "I feel like I need to say the right things at the right time and I do and that's it."

When Prescott became the starter because of a preseason back injury sustained by Romo two years ago, he spent half that season repeating that it was Romo's team. Somewhere in the middle of an 11-game winning streak, though Baker Mayfield Jersey , the conversation changed. The qualities to lead were already there.

"It's just about finding new ways to lead and it's going to continue to evolve each and every year 鈥?every year that I get more experience and I get older," Prescott said. "New ways I can come in contact with my teammates, motivate them or do whatever I have to do to get the best out of them."

Asked specifically about what Witten's departure meant for Lee's leadership role, coach Jason Garrett almost cut off the question.

"Witt was the guy who was out in front, the most veteran guy, incredibly well-respected guy," Garrett said. "But all these guys have been grasping that mantle for a long time. There's no one guy that can lead as a player. It just doesn't happen that way. You have to have it throughout your team."

The Cowboys had some tangible proof during the first week of training camp.

NOTES: Dallas placed rookie WR Cedrick Wilson, a sixth-round pick, on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and signed rookie Ricky Jeune out of Georgia Tech.

The New York Giants have signed offensive lineman Patrick Omameh and defensive back Curtis Riley.

The team announced the moves on Friday.

Omameh, who spent the past two seasons in Jacksonville, has played in 53 regular-season games with 44 starts for Tampa Bay Authentic Todd Frazier Jersey , Chicago and the Jaguars. Last season, the former Michigan product started 16 games at left guard for Jacksonville.

Riley played in 11 games the previous two seasons for Tennessee. He had 11 tackles, an interception, and one special teams tackle in seven games last season. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by Tennessee on 2015.

The Giants, coming off a 3-13 season, signed left tackle Nate Solder and outside linebacker Kareem Martin on the first two days of free agency.

Mark Cavendish claimed the Olympic medal which long proved so elusive with silver in the mens omnium -- but it was not without drama. Wholesale NFL Jerseys .After eight years of trying and at the third time of asking, Cavendish finished behind Italys Elia Viviani, while defending champion Lasse Norman Hansen of Denmark took bronze.A mid-race crash appeared to be of Cavendishs own making and he may yet face a protest from rivals or a sanction from race officials which could deny him the podium spot.Viviani finished with 207 points, Cavendish with 194 and Hansen with 192. World champion Fernando Gaviria of Colombia was fourth on 181 points. The omnium is unpredictable and the concluding points race -- a format change since London 2012, when the time-trial was last -- means the podium can change right until the very last. That reshuffle tempted Cavendish to return to the velodrome.Viviani had 178 points, 16 clear of second-placed Cavendish entering the final discipline, the concluding 160-lap points race where the riders would add to their cumulative totals with sprints every 10 laps. Even Gaviria was not out of medal contention on 140 points, 22 behind the Briton.Gaviria tried to take a lap from the gun, but instead had to settle for winning the first sprint. And Viviani pipped Cavendish to the second sprint before Hansen launched his bid for a lap, which was successful before the sixth sprint, displacing Cavendish in silver medal position. There was some controversy when Park Sanghoon struck Cavendishs back wheel, the Briton having swung down the track moments after appearing to look in the South Koreans direction.Park tumbled, taking Viviani with him with 109 laps to go. Cavendish stayed on his bike and the Italian was swiftly back in the race, benefiting from two laps grace, as the race was neutralised with 99 laps to go to allow Park to be taken away on a stretcher.Gaviria had gained a lap by then and when the race resumed scored in the seventh sprint to move within two points of third-placed Cavendish, who restored his cushion to five by placing second to Hansen in the sprint. The Briton won the ninth sprint ahead of Viviani and Gaviria and triumphed in the 12th sprint to draw level on points with Hansen. Viviani was eight points clear of the pair and Hansen scored at the 13th sprint to move two points clear of Cavendish again.Gaviria was 22 points behind and the question for Cavendish was whether to gamble a podium place in search of gold.Viviani won the 14th sprint, with 20 laps and two sprints remaining, as Cavendish drew level with Hansen once more, before moving ahead with one point at the penultimate sprint. With Viviani extending his lead, Cavendish and Hansen marked each other as Gaviria tried in vain to take another lap. Cavendish held on, although there could yet be an intervention from the officials. It ended a long wait for an Olympic medal. Cavendish was ninth in the Madison with Sir Bradley Wiggins at the 2008 Games in Beijing, suffering the ignominy of being the only member of the track team not to win a medal. He was 29th in the road race on the opening day of London 2012, as Britain felt the peloton conspired against the sprinter. The 31-year-old Manxman will be 35 by Tokyo 2020 and may have achieved everything he wishes on the road by then, so another Olympic track bid should not be discounted. He has achieved two of his 2016 goals -- the Tours yellow jersey and an Olympic medal -- and now will turn his attentions to the third, a second road race world title in Qatar in October.Britain now have four golds and three silvers from six events entered after five days of action in the velodrome. Britain did not qualify for the seventh, the womens team sprint.Three events take place on Tuesdays final day in the velodrome, with the potential for more success in the womens omnium, through Laura Trott, the mens Keirin, which features Jason Kenny and Callum Skinner, and the womens sprint, with Becky James and Katy Marchant in the quarterfinals. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune at baseballs Winter Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, Boras called the former home of the Expos a "tremendous environment" for baseball. . Anthony Calvillo, through 20 CFL seasons, was frequently invincible and largely stoic in the heat of competition. But underneath the professional exterior he was, and is, compellingly human. The worlds 10 best players have been whittled down to four so it is time to remember why Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis deserve their places in the Premier League Darts play-offs, which take place at The O2 on Thursday, live on Sky Sports. Michael van GerwenIt seems a long time ago that Van Gerwen started the season with a 4-7 defeat to James Wade in Leeds and perhaps therein lies the secret to defeating the mighty Dutchman. Check out MVGs only loss of the season so far... Back-to-back wins over fellow semi-finalists Anderson and Lewis, in Newcastle and Dublin respectively, were followed by a 7-1 thrashing of Michael Smith that yielded a 123 average, the highest in televised history. He stormed to the top of the league with a 7-2 win against Peter Wright in Exeter that sparked debate about whether he is already the greatest player in the history of darts. A top-of-the-table clash against Taylor in Glasgow saw Van Gerwen relinquish a 5-1 lead to draw 6-6. Michael van Gerwen missed three winning darts against Phil Taylor He made it three draws in a row after Robert Thornton and Raymond van Barneveld caused him to wobble in Liverpool and Cardiff, handing top spot to Taylor. He drew with Anderson then beat Lewis to solidify his play-off push before a 7-1 win against Wade put him top of the league. Even missing a nine-darter with his final arrow could not prevent Van Gerwen picking up maximum points against Van Barneveld in Manchester. Michael van Gerwen almost pulled off a nine-darter against Raymond van Barneveld Van Gerwen finished the regular season in No 1 spot on leg-difference after besting Taylor 7-5 in his home country of the Netherlands.Phil TaylorA thumping 2-7 loss on the opening night to Van Barneveld was not what the doctor ordered, but Taylor rebounded with wins against Wade in Newcastle and Anderson in Dublin. The 16-time world champion proved he meant business with a whitewash over Thornton in the sixth week.Taylor brilliantly recovered from 5-1 down to Van Gerwen in Glasgow to snatch a draw, then was typically ruthless as he eliminated Michael Smith from the tournament with a 7-5 win on Judgement Night. Phil Taylor eliminated Michael Smith from the tournament He then dispatched Anderson 7-3 in Sheffield before extending his lead at the top of the table to five points with a 7-5 victory over long-time rival Van Barneveld in Belfast. The winning leg as Phil Taylor trumpped Barney A 7-4 loss to Wright never caused a major blip and Taylor responded with a 7-2 thrashing over fellow semi-finalist Lewis before losing to Van Gerwen in Rotterdam, resulting in a second-placed finish. Adam Clendening Gear. This 7-2 win against Robert Thornton guaranteed Phil Taylor a play-off spot Gary AndersonAndersons Premier League title defence began bizarrely as he was ruled out of the opening night due to illness, meaning he debuted a week late with a 7-3 loss to Van Gerwen in Newcastle before losing 7-4 to Taylor in Dublin. Gary Anderson suffered an early loss to MVG The Flying Scotsman finally started putting points on the board before a bumper night in Glasgow, spurred on by his compatriots, resulted in two wins over Lewis and Wright. He even picked up a point despite oddly losing count against Wade in Cardiff as the play-offs began to present themselves. A second loss of the season to Taylor was followed by a thrilling 6-6 draw with Van Gerwen in Belfast. Watch the moment Gary Anderson got his numbers horribly wrong Needing to scrap to stay ahead of the chasing pack, Anderson edged past Van Barneveld before drawing with Wade to confirm his inclusion. A defeat on the final day to Lewis did nothing to damage Andersons third-place finish.Adrian LewisThe Stoke thrower started with back-to-back wins against Smith and Dave Chisnall, who would eventually be eliminated on Judgement Night, but ran out of ideas in a third-week loss to Van Gerwen. A sensational final leg between Adrian Lewis and James Wade Further defeats to Taylor, Wright and Anderson forced Lewis to scramble around mid-table but he responded with a much-needed win against Van Barneveld in Liverpool. He eventually struck the most eye-catching moment of the season with a nine-darter against Wade in Belfast en route to a 7-5 win that put him in the drivers seat for fourth-place. Watch Adrian Lewis hit a nine-darter A final night 7-2 win against Anderson confirmed his play-off spot - the result is the only time that Lewis has beaten any of his top four rivals so far this season.Watch the Premier League Darts play-offs from The O2 Arena on Thursday at 7pm, Sky Sports 2 HD. Jets start a six game home stand Friday with another divisional game, home to the Dallas Stars. . LOUIS -- Roman Polak was celebrating even before Alexander Steen scored the winning goal in Saturdays 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.PHILADELPHIA -- While Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson are eager to know who will be the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback, its clear Chip Kelly isnt picking a guy before training camp. Cheap Nike Dunk Shoes China . Kellys logic makes sense to others. "I havent been evaluating our quarterbacks because Im focused on the offensive line but I really dont see the point of Chip Kelly naming a starting QB before camp," veteran Evan Mathis told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "This is an entirely new coaching staff with an entirely new offence, which isnt even fully installed yet. Its not rocket science; whoever the coaches feel will help the team the most will win the job after proving himself in training camp and preseason." Vick and Nick Foles competed along with rookie Matt Barkley throughout the teams spring practices. Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne also took reps. "To make any decisions on who someone is from wearing shorts and T-shirts, doesnt make sense to us," Kelly said last week. Thats why a starter wont be named by the time training camp opens July 22. Of course, Vick and Jackson prefer to know now. "Hopefully, Chip makes a decision before training camp and we wont have to answer that question," Vick told the media last week, "so we can go out there as quarterbacks and just focus on this season and not answer questions about competition every day." Jackson, the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, echoed those thoughts when asked about the quarterback competition in an interview with the NFL Network on Tuesday. "So far, I dont know, it has been kind of even. Vick and Foles have been switching off (with) first team (and) second team," Jackson said. "So its the same thing with them. I have been hearing some things about Vick saying that he wants to know. At the same time, the team wants to know, too. We need to go into training camp prepared and know who is going to be our starting quarterback. &quuot;Whether its Foles or Vick, I think they would both do a great job and we will be ready for the season. Cheap Nike Dunk Shoes Free Shipping. " All that matters is Kellys opinion. He wants to see the players compete in pads at camp and in games in August. Now, its just too close to call. "Theyre both coachable. They both want to win. Theyre both here as many hours as they possibly can be here. They both really work at the game and want to get better," Kelly said. "Doesnt matter how long Mikes been in the league or Nick or what systems hes come from. Theyre both really wrapping around what (quarterbacks coach) Billy (Lazor) and (offensive co-ordinator) Pat (Shurmur) are teaching them. "So, I think its fun." Vick, a four-time Pro Bowl pick, has battled injuries and inconsistency the last two years after having his best all-around season as a pro in 2010. Foles, a third-round pick last year, was 1-5 as a starter last year on a team that finished 4-12. Foles completed 60.8 per cent of his passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions, but couldnt save former coach Andy Reids job. "The only thing thats in my control is what I do on the field," Foles said after the team finished minicamp. "I dont go to sleep at night, sweating, wondering where I am (on the depth chart). What I can do is work hard, come out, be on the field and be a leader to these guys. Execute the plays. "Make the guys around me better." Of the five quarterbacks on the roster, Dixon is most familiar with Kelly. Dixon had a standout career at Oregon when Kelly was offensive co-ordinator with the Ducks, but has only started three games in five seasons in the NFL. He spent last year with the Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens on their practice squad. "He keeps everyone on their toes," Dixon said of Kelly. "As an athlete, you have to be ready. Whenever your name is called, you have to be ready." The mixed zone is not a place to make friends. The 2016-2017 college basketball season will be the Year of the Freshmen, featuring what could be the best class weve ever seen. Over the next two weeks, we will get familiar with the best of the best, examining who they are and where each of the top 10 prospects in the 2016 ESPN 100 came from.Read more: No. 10 Dukes Frank Jackson | No. 9 Kentuckys Malik Monk No. 8 Michigan States Miles Bridges | No. 7 Washingtons Markelle Fultz No. 6 Kentuckys DeAaron Fox | No. 5 Kentuckys Bam Adebayo No. 4 UCLAs Lonzo Ball | No. 3 Dukes Jayson Tatum No. 2 Kansas Josh Jackson | No. 1 Dukes Harry GilesLOS ANGELES -- Its imprudent to measure any player by his or her highlights. In 2016, a few spliced clips can go viral and make someone who was thought to be an average talent draw bizarre comparisons. But near the 2:25 mark of Lonzo Balls official reel, UCLAs five-star freshman shakes a defender with a crossover at last years City of Palms tournament in Fort Myers, Florida. The opponents defense, which looks more like an accidental Running Man dance, throws him backward to the floor, where he seems confused by a blocking foul call.Ball stares at the defender for a few seconds, and then he extends his hand to help him up. He does not yell or scream -- even as fans yell and scream around him. He only offers his hand before he turns toward midcourt, undeterred by the teenage heap he left behind. He was stone-cold, stone-faced the whole time, said Darren Moore, Balls personal trainer, who attended the game. Im laughing. Everybody else is going crazy, and hes like, Theres still work to be done. Those on the West Coast never announce their swag. They dont have to. You can feel their carefree vibe when they enter a room. From the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Zack Morris, Californias coolest all seem weightless. Thats the first thing you notice about?Ball?when you meet him.Im doing yoga for the first time, he said. I basically just do a bunch of stretching and downward dog and stuff like that, stuff Ive never heard of. But its cool. The baby afro, soft tone and blunt answers to tough questions all punctuate the persona of a 6-foot-6 former high school point guard and projected lottery pick who led Chino Hills High School in the Los Angeles suburbs to a perfect 35-0 record his senior year. If his near triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists) in last weeks exhibition victory over The Masters University means anything, its clear that Ball could help UCLA forget its subpar season from a year ago too.I think you saw a little bit of how much Lonzo can impact the game in every single way, UCLA guard?Bryce Alford?told reporters after the win.Ball is now charged with redeeming the West Coasts most accomplished program after a 15-17 campaign -- just the fourth losing season in the post-John Wooden era -- prompted angry fans to fly banners over the UCLA campus demanding fourth-year coach Steve Alfords dismissal. But Ball said he is not concerned with the pressure -- only the mission.I think we have all the pieces now, he said. Weve got enough talent. Weve got enough older guys to help us out along the way. I think were going to make a lot of noise this year. As far as pressure goes, I dont really look at it like its a big thing. Its just the game of basketball. I think I should be fine.He changed UCLAs future long before he arrived. Balls brothers,?Li Angelo?(a three-star prospect in UCLAs No. 2 2017 recruiting class) and LaMelo Ball (a 5-foot-10 point guard in the 2019 class), have committed to the Bruins too. If they develop into the talents their father, LaVar Ball, projects -- Every one of my boys is going to be one-and-done, he said -- then the Ball family could create a legacy at UCLA.But Lonzo Ball is here now. This season, his arrival will likely prompt Bryce Alfords move to the wing. Ball was the point guard in the three-guard lineup (Ball, Alford and?Isaac Hamilton) Steve Alford started in last weeks exhibition contest.Basically, [Steve Alford]s gonna let me play, Lonzo Ball said. Thats what I like. Im not trying to have nobody put no restrictions on me. Basically, [coach Alford] said when I come here, I can play my game and help them win basketball games. Thats good for me. Were gonna play an up-tempo style of play. Thats better for my game too. Just all those things together made my decision easier.Last season, Bryce Alford played point guard and led the team with 16.1 points and 5.2 assists per game. He also finished 409th in KenPom.coms offensive efficiency ratings, made 40 percent of his attempts inside the arc and committed turnovers on 13.6 percent of his possessions. Those numbers ignited frustrated fans who hoped for a switch at point guard, especially after Ball signed with the program.I think people say that because of Bryces last name, Steve Alford said. If his name was Jones, people would be saying a lot different, [better] things about him. But its good to geet him off the ball with what Lonzo brings. Shake Milton Jersey. Its not a hostile development for a UCLA team with more top-to-bottom talent than perhaps any other team on the West Coast. That was evident last week but also apparent prior to the season. Bryce Alford said he enjoyed his time in the backcourt with Ball during the teams exhibition tour of Australia in August.?In the Bruins first exhibition game last week, Alford led the team in scoring (22 points), while Ball led in assists.I think thats where Im best, Alford said of the Australia trip. I think we really played well together. That dude can pass the heck out of the ball, so I dont mind playing with him.Throughout the trip, however, Lonzo Ball struggled. He finished 9-for-36 from the field (3-for-18 from the 3-point line) in three games against one collegiate team and two pro squads. He accrued 14 assists and eight turnovers while the team posted a 2-1 record. The Naismith national prep player of the year in 2015-16 hadnt lost a game since his junior year of high school. He also came to campus as a potential savior for a program desperate for a reboot. Cheers of Lonzo! Lonzo! Lonzo! Down Under?only confirmed the optimism of a fan base that has demonstrated its fury by avoiding Pauley Pavilion. The building has not seen an average of 10,000 or more fans during Alfords tenure. Its a burden, even for the players who believe theyre ready for it.Once the team returned from the trip, Alford visited Ball at his familys home in Chino Hills, California. Alford understands Balls position. As a New Castle, Indiana, product, he?earned his states Mr. Basketball award in high school and led Bob Knights Hoosiers to the 1987 national title.Staying home comes with perks -- and pitfalls -- he told him.I think that was the positive of Australia: He felt a lot of that for the first time, he said. Its been a long time, but I used to be a player that was hyped at Indiana. There comes a lot of hype. ... I just told him to be who you are.Lonzo Ball wont bend. LaVar Ball wont let him. The freshmans father has enough confidence for his eldest son, the entire UCLA squad and half of Los Angeles, if they need it.Since Lonzo was a baby, I was always telling him that someone had to be better than Michael Jordan, LaVar Ball said. Why not you?LaVar Ball speaks in homilies about destiny, missions and the future. Sometimes, his predictions seem improbable or even impossible -- but only if you dont know about the Ball brothers.Lonzo Ball was 2 years old when his father placed him on a table and dared him to jump to the ground and land on a mushy mat. When LaVar Ball trained young basketball players -- he played at Washington State and Cal State-Los Angeles -- his son got involved too. When LaVar was teaching me how to catch lobs, Lonzo would throw me the lobs, Moore said. He was never nervous. Hes always had that special thing. He was 7 years old then.LaVar Ball created the Big Ballers NXT AAU program, which Lonzo Ball and his younger brothers anchored. LaVar Ball kept his sons off the major AAU circuits, an unorthodox move for a rising star such as Lonzo. He preferred to play them together against players four, five or even six years older. They turned Chino Hills into a national prep powerhouse that captured the CIF Open Division state title in 2016, earned the nations top ranking and averaged 97.3 PPG.He dont say nothing, LaVar Ball said of his sons demeanor. I say, Entertain these people. ... I tell people, UCLA is gonna win the national championship. He wants to change the culture.Lonzo Ball just wins. Its all he knows. His father shipped his youth trophies to relatives so he and his brothers would expect victory instead of celebrating each achievement. Their bond on the court also showed the UCLA star the value of fighting for the team. His missteps in Australia obscured some of the teams gains with the freshman running point.?Aaron Holiday?(10.3 PPG) blossomed and looked the part of a Pac-12 all-conference performer.?Thomas Welsh and elite recruits?TJ Leaf?and Ike Anigbogu, who could miss the first six weeks with a knee injury,?comprise one of the nations most promising frontcourts. Bryce Alford, now playing off the ball, made 60 percent of his 3-pointers and did not commit a turnover in a two-game stretch on the teams international tour.Thats not Division I basketball, though. Thats not the Pac-12, which enters the season with two other top-25 programs. And its not the NCAA tournament, which UCLA must reach and advance through if the school intends to avoid the flop label. But the Bruins can conquer those tasks, many agree, if the West Coast prodigy peaks and matches the buzz that has swirled for years.Weve got UCLA across our chest, Ball said.
