CHASKA, Minn. . -- At first, I was going to write a column proposing 10 questions entering this weeks Ryder Cup.Then I thought about maybe turning it into 10 predictions instead.Like a golf fan with dual citizenship, I didnt know which way to lean.So I opted for both. Here are 10 questions AND predictions going into this weeks matches.1. Question: Lets start with an easy one: Who are the most important players for each team? Theres a reason why the U.S. team has adopted the slogan 12 Strong and not 1 Stronger than the Other 11. Everybodys points count the same this week. That said, there are a few guys who could spark some momentum a little bit more than their fellow teammates.Prediction: Hes no longer the best player on the U.S. team, and he might not play more than three matches, but if Phil Mickelson gets it going, his counterparts will feed off that. For the Europeans, its all about Rory McIlroy. Hes their compass; as Rory goes, so goes the team. Unless he completely stinks up the joint, expect five matches this week.2. Question: Related follow-up -- Who will be the best players for each team? Maybe these first two questions are the same thing, maybe there are some nuanced differences between them. Its my column; Ill opt for the latter.Prediction: Lets not overthink this on the U.S. side. Dustin Johnson has been the worlds best player this year and he was 3-0-0 the last time this event was held stateside. Easy call. And Id love to go contrarian for the Europeans, but McIlroy is fresh off a win, hes happy and -- uh-oh -- happy learned how to putt.3. Question: Which relative unknown will emerge as a breakout American star this week? Oh, I love the idea of breaking up the U.S. and Europe into two separate questions, so we could stretch this thing out to a total of 10. Thats some crafty column configuring right there.Prediction: There really arent any unknowns on the U.S. team. The two rookies -- Brooks Koepka and Ryan Moore -- have each played high-level golf on the PGA Tour for a while. That said, keep an eye on Moore, the last man in. Nothing tends to rattle him and hes been playing great golf lately.4. Question: Same question, for the Europeans. At least there are some options here. Darren Clarkes side comes in with six rookies, although thats never been the right term for them. Even though hes never played in a Ryder Cup before, its difficult to call Masters champion Danny Willett a rookie. These guys have all played big-event golf before, obviously.Prediction: Thomas Pieters seems like Nicolas Colsaerts 2.0 -- an improved version of the Belgian Bomber who posted nine birdies on Friday afternoon four years ago before running out of gas on the weekend. Expect him to win a few matches this week, possibly paired with a calming veteran influence. Honorable mention: Rafa Cabrera Bello.5. Question: Wait a minute -- why doesnt this thing start on Thursday instead of making us wait until Friday? Ive never understood this. As much as the Ryder Cup is about competition and country, its also all about the Benjamins. Starting on Thursday, even with just one session, would mean an extra day of television revenue, not to mention an extra day of stoking fan interest levels. As is, Thursday at the Ryder Cup is one of the most brutal days in golf. Lets get this thing moving already.Prediction: Itll happen. Someday.6. Question: Will the captains really make a difference this week? And if so, whos better? Ive finally seen the light. I used to compare Ryder Cup captains to first-base coaches: Basically, pat guys on the butt, point em in the right direction and hope you win. I changed my mind when Paul Azinger imparted strategic maneuvers to win in 2008, and my opinion was only reinforced two years ago, when Paul McGinley came prepared for every potential scenario.Prediction: Much like the matches themselves, captains often seem even until they start playing, then some weaknesses emerge. Davis Love III and Darren Clarke appear equally up to the task, though if you want to give a slight advantage, it might go to Love for having the experience from four years ago.7. Question: OK then, smart guy. Will the vice captains really make a difference? Just because I need to hit my word count in this piece, here are all the vice captains for each side: Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Tom Lehman and, yes, Bubba Watson for the U.S.; Padraig Harrington, Ian Poulter, Thomas Bjorn and Paul Lawrie for Europe.Prediction: Actually? Yeah, they will make a difference. Thats because each of these captains is using his assistants much like the president leans on his cabinet. Neither Love nor Clarke is ruling with an iron fist this week. In some ways, the American vice captains might even wield greater power, as Love seems inclined to listen to their decisions -- especially those of Tiger.8. Question: Which pre-tournament controversy will most affect the competition? Mickelson dredged up old memories by criticizing 2004 captain Hal Sutton for pairing him with Woods; he later apologized. Pete Willett, brother of Danny, wrote a column calling American fans a baying mob of imbeciles among other things; Danny later apologized on his behalf.Prediction: This is the kind of stuff that makes headlines when theres so much lead time before the event and no golf being played. Neither controversy should have much of an effect on the outcome, though dont be surprised if Willett -- apology or not -- hears more than his share of jeers from the home crowd, especially during afternoon matches when the gallery has, uh, partaken in the refreshments.9. Question: What will be the key stat this week? Conventional wisdom says putting wins these things. Conventional wisdom is also the kind of thing which we took for granted before analytics showed us what really mattered. Love and his vice captains have taken a deep dive into the numbers of the last few Ryder Cups and have spent the last few months crunching the numbers.Prediction: Sure, putting matters. Putting always matters. But keep a close eye on this one: Four years ago, the U.S. played the par-5 holes in a collective 52-28-94 and nearly -- maybe shouldve -- won. Two years ago, the team played these holes in 27-51-58 and got clobbered. On a long golf course (7,628 yards) with the traditional four par-5 layout, expect performance on these holes to be a great determining factor in the overall result.10. Question: Forget all that other stuff. Whos gonna win this thing? Youre excused if you skipped everything above and scrolled straight to here. This is what you want to know; this is what everyone wants to know. Can the U.S. team, after losing the past three Ryder Cups and six of the past seven, finally win again?Prediction: Playing on home soil, with a team ranked higher collectively and -- most importantly -- inspired by the spirit of Arnold Palmer, it feels like everything is set up for a U.S. victory. Ill put it this way: If they dont win this week, with all of those factors at play, it could be a long time before they do. But itll happen. After years of in-fighting, blame-deflecting and task-forcing, the U.S. will win this week ... finally. . Gather a group of friends, or find a league to join online, draft your team, set your lineup and compete in a number of different formats. . But Bourque, who has missed three games with a lower-body injury, wont be in the lineup when the Habs travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres on Wednesday. . Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and France midfielder Blaise Matuidi scored, with star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic setting up both despite having a poor game by his high standards. Forward Eduardo gave Ajaccio the lead in the sixth minute after being set up by right winger Benjamin Andre, and the Corsican side looked comfortable in the first half, with the lively Johan Cavalli causing problems with his probing runs from midfield. Despite several clashes with the teenager this year, Kimi Raikkonen says Max Verstappen is doing a good job at Red Bull despite being a bit on the limit at times.Raikkonen has been one of the grids world champions to criticise Verstappen for moving late in the braking zone when defending position this year, something echoed by Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen claimed an impressive second last time out in Japan by holding off Hamilton -- though Mercedes initially lodged a complaint about his driving after the race, a protest that was eventually dropped.?Raikkonen says Verstappen has been doing a good job despite the criticism.Like Ive always said, you can have two different opinions as one guy is happy and another one is not, depending on who comes out on top, he said. I have nothing against him, hes a good driver and hes doing a good job, obviously certain things are a bit on the limit, but there are stewards in the races that will decide if its good or not. These things will always balance out in the long run. Sometimes you end up fighting with the same driver many times in one year and then with another driver the next year, but II have nothing really to say about him. .Despite not finishing either car on the podium, Ferrari looked to have made a step forward in Japan having out-qualified both Red Bull drivers. Raikkonen says the team will not be sa

CLEVELAND, Ohio - In this day and age, a manager will gladly take the pitching line Josh Johnson served up. Jazz Jerseys Outlet . Seven innings, two earned runs on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Only five base runners against and five three-up, three-down frames. "Thats what we look for out of him," said manager John Gibbons. "If he can do that every time he goes out there, weve got a shot. It was a lot like that game in San Francisco when he came back from his arm injury. He pitched a heck of a ballgame." Just one problem: the Blue Jays didnt score and in the process, wasted one of the best efforts Johnson has given the club in his injury-interrupted, disappointing first season in Toronto. In a 3-0 loss, it was the fourth inning which proved to be the difference. The game was scoreless. The Jays already had stranded four runners, two of them in scoring position, over the first three innings. Colby Rasmus led off with an opposite field double. Maicer Izturis followed with a first pitch single through the right side and suddenly Toronto had runners at the corners with nobody out. But, like with prior opportunities and similar to those that would come, the Jays offence couldnt produce. Rajai Davis hit a comebacker to Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who froze Rasmus at third and took the force out of Izturis at second. Davis promptly stole second base with J.P. Arencibia at the plate. Arencibia, however, struck out looking and Emilio Bonifacio flied out. Inning over, more runners stranded, another chance squandered. With one out in their half of the fourth, the Indians drew their first base runner when Johnson walked Asdrubal Cabrera. Jason Kipnis followed with Clevelands first hit of the night, a single up the middle. Two hits later, RBI singles by Nick Swisher and Michael Brantley, the Indians had a 2-0 lead and the momentum in the game. Clevelands only other chance to score came in the eighth when Drew Stubbs doubled off Steve Delabar. A sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly later, it was 3-0 Indians. It was a case of Cleveland doing a lot with a little and the Blue Jays doing nothing with more than enough. "We just couldnt get anything going tonight," said Gibbons. "Even in that last inning we had a couple of guys on but we couldnt string any or hit a ball in a gap or anything like that." There is Johnson, stuck on one win, called upon to pitch inside and to be more aggressive and to trust his stuff, admitting the lack of success is mentally taxing. It must be, considering he was a key piece of one of general manager Alex Anthopoulos offseason blockbusters and hes an impending free agent whose value is slipping. "Youve always got to stay positive," said Johnson. "Youve got to find a way to stay positive. Its tough at times but youve got to find a way. Youve got some good teammates here who definitely help you through it and always be positive and there for you to help you get through it." Johnson also has his manager, Gibbons, who rarely makes mound visits when hes not going to change the pitcher. Gibbons made an exception in that fourth inning, as Johnson was struggling. "Thats between us," said Gibbons, when asked his message for Johnson. "He said youve got this and thats pretty much it," said Johnson. "Maybe a little bit more than that but just believe in yourself, dont worry about it and go get em." Its easier said than done, as Johnson is finding out this season. Hell take his fourth attempt at a second victory in the Blue Jays final game before the All-Star break, on Sunday in Baltimore. The Orioles are the only team Johnsons beaten this season. ROTATING THE ROTATION Thanks to the off day Monday, manager John Gibbons is afforded the opportunity to juggle his starting rotation. R.A. Dickey will now pitch on Thursday afternoon against the Indians. Hell be on regular four days of rest. Mark Buehrle will be pushed back to Friday, the opener of a three-game series in Baltimore. Based on numbers, the move makes sense. In three starts against the Orioles this season, Dickey is 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA. Buehrle, strangely, has yet to pitch against Baltimore this season despite the Jays and Orioles having hooked up for 10 games over three series. LAWRIE AT SECOND BASE Brett Lawrie, on the disabled list since May 29th with a left ankle sprain, arrived in Syracuse in time to be in the starting lineup for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night. That Lawrie was promoted as a continuation of his rehab assignment is hardly surprising. That he started at second base caught observers attention and renewed speculation the club may be considering a move. Remember Lawrie, 23, played two rehab games at second base for Single-A Dunedin in April. At the time, Lawrie was recovering from a strained oblique suffered before the World Baseball Classic. The plug quickly was pulled on the experiment, and Lawrie was brought back to the big leagues, when Jose Reyes went down with an ankle injury on April 12. In 37 games this season, Lawrie is hitting .209/.268/.374 with five home runs and 14 RBI. Alec Burks Jersey .ca NFL Power Rankings, overtaking the Denver Broncos and remaining ahead of NFC competition San Francisco, Carolina and New Orleans. Karl Malone Jersey . The Australian is competing in his final season in Formula One and still looking for his first win this year. He will look to end Vettels run of six straight race wins on Sunday. Webber, who is fifth in the championship, earned his second pole from the past three races and 13th of his career. . Thats about all he can do right now, so hes trying not to think about when he might be able to play again for the Los Angeles Lakers.PHOENIX -- Arizona did it again. Not a walk-off home run this time. A game-ending base hit did just fine. The result was another excruciating loss for Baltimore in the desert. Aaron Hill singled with one out in the bottom of the 14th inning on Wednesday to give the Diamondbacks their third straight walk-off win over the Orioles, 5-4. "These last three days have been a lot of fun," Hill said. Not for the visitors. Baltimore led all three games entering the seventh. "It was a tough series," said Orioles starter Chris Tillman, thwarted in his bid for a 15th victory. "Theres nothing you can do about it now. Youve got to look forward to the next one at home." Hill forced extra innings with an RBI single in the ninth off Jim Johnson in the Orioles closers ninth blown save of the season and second in as many days. Bud Norris (8-10), who started and threw five innings in San Francisco on Sunday, came on in the 14th and walked two batters ahead of Hills single to take the loss. Heath Bell (4-1) threw an inning to get the victory. Hill followed Adam Eaton and Paul Goldschmidt as the Arizona last-inning stars. Eatons home run in the ninth gave Arizona the victory in the opener, then Goldschmidt homered in the ninth to tie it and hit another in the 11th to win it on Tuesday night. Hills game-winning single was the only hit in the five extra innings for the Diamondbacks, who finished the homestand 6-2. Baltimore went 4-4 in an eight-game trip to three NL West cities. Norris, the Orioles eighth pitcher, walked Parra and Martin Prado on four pitches apiece to start the 14th. He struck out Goldschmidt, and Hill joked about the reaction from the stands. "The crowd was like Oh, man," Hill said, "but hes done it enough this year. Its time for someone else, right?" Hills single just got through the infield as Gerardo Parra raced home with the winner. As was the case the previous two nights, the players doused the hero with water, dirt and who knows what else. "I dont understand the dirt bath thing, I really dont," Hill said. "The dirt, the rosin bag, the spit, whatever else comes at you, I dont know where that came from. But hey, if it means we win a ballgame, Ill take it every time." Norris refused to talk to reporters afterward. He had skipped his scheduled bullpen session Wednesday to be ready if he was needed should the game go extra innings after the 11-inning affair on Tuesday night. "We knew he was going to be able to throw a couple of innings for us," manager Buck Showalter said. "He throws more pitches on his work day, which would have been today, than he did in the game. Dante Exum Jersey. " Showalter refused to criticize Johnson, who leads the majors with 39 saves. "The worlds full of those guys who come in after the wars over and shoot the wounded. Im not one of those guys," he said. "Ill leave that to the guys who are outside the arena." Showalter got the inevitable question about sticking with Johnson as closer. "Am I going to sit Adam Jones because he had a rough day today?" he said. "I as a manager cant live in that world. Weve got a lot of pieces in the chain that have to work and every club does. And Ill be the first guy to make adjustments if they need to be made, but theres a lot of things that weve got to shore up besides that." The Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the 10th but Brad Ziegler induced Nate McLouth into a double-play grounder to second. Baltimore took a 4-2 lead into the seventh on Monday and a 3-0 lead after six on Tuesday. The Orioles were up 4-2 again when Tillman left the game entering the seventh. Arizona got a run in the seventh on Prados RBI single, then threatened but failed to score in the eighth. Parra, who tripled in a run in the second, doubled to left off Johnson to start the ninth. Prados bunt failed to advance the runner, then after a quick trip to the mound by manager Buck Showalter, Goldschmidt was walked intentionally. That brought up Hill, who singled sharply to left on the first pitch to tie it. Goldschmidt moved to third on the play but was stranded when Matt Davidson struck out and Tuffy Gosewisch grounded to short. All four Baltimore runs came with two outs against Patrick Corbin in the second, two of them on Manny Machados home run. Corbin failed for the fourth time in his bid for a 13th victory. He went seven innings, giving up four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. NOTES: When they recalled Campana, the Diamondbacks optioned LHP Tyler Skaggs to Triple-A Reno. Skaggs had been with the team for a couple of days as a long-inning relief option in his latest in a series of stints with the big league club. ... The Orioles return home for a three-game interleague series with Colorado, sending LHP Wei-Yin Chen (6-5, 3.06 ERA) to the mound against the Rockies RHP Juan Nicasio (6-6, 5.04) in the opener Friday night. ... Indias Kidambi Srikanth fought frayed nerves to put up a valiant show before going down to Chinese badminton superstar and world No. . 3 Lin Dan 6-21, 21-11, 18-21 in the mens singles quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. The loss now leaves the burden of a medal finish for India in badminton on PV Sindhu, who will play her semi-final on Thursday.Coming into the encounter having not dropped a single game in the previous three matches, Srikanth looked nervous and overawed by the occasion. With unforced errors gnawing at his game, he fell behind 1-11 early in the first game. Playing a dominant game, Lin had the Indian undone with his drops, smashes and amazing retrievals. Even the smashes that Srikanth could manage, like the cross-court one at 6-20, sailed wide. Lin won the first game in 16 minutes.Nosing ahead 3-0 lead in the second, Srikanth, whose brief chat with coach Pullela Gopichand at the break seemed to have paid off, held on to his lead at 7-4. The world No. 11-ranked Indian was playing like a wholly different player, a departure from his flummoxed self in the first game. Lin, who slipped quite a few times during the second game, asked for the court to be swabbed again. A brilliant smash had a hapless Lin on all fours, as the Indian went ahead 16-9, scenting a decider. Soon enough Srikanth wrapped up the game 21-11 as Lin dropped a game only for the third time in as many Olympic appearances. The third game was a tense and close one, with Srikanth forcing Lin to scamper all over the court, drawing even at 7-7 before the Chinese dispatched a scorching smash to close in 11-13. Though Srikanth put up a brilliant effort to stay afloat, Lin overpowered him with his well-placed smashes to move into the semi-finals with a 21-18 win in the decider.Srikanth had been in stellar form at the Olympics, pulling off a win over world No. 5 Jan O Jorgensen in straight games in the pre-quarterfinals.Srikanth, making his first Olympic appearance, had lost to the two-time Olympic gold medallist and defending champion in two of the three occasions that they played each other before this. The Indians sole win over his childhood hero came in the final of the China Open Super Series Premier tournament two years ago.Srikanth later regretted making some crucial mistakes near the end of the match. In the second game, he said the plan was to not make simple mistakes like I made in the first game. About his comeback from the second game onwards, Srikanth said: I wanted to be a little more aggressive, thats the only strategy. He said he was happy with his performance in the match.About the improvement in his performance at the Olympics -- compared with how he had played before in 2016 -- Srikanth said he had not been unhappy with the way he was playing, just that he was not winning. He also credited the break he took before the Olympics for the gains. . Pirlo limped out of Sundays 1-0 win over Udinese after just 13 minutes. Max Verstappen completed 78 overtakes during the 2016 F1 season, the most in a single year since the record was first recorded. .Verstappen was one of the stars of the season, winning his debut race for Red Bull in Spain after being promoted from Toro Rosso. He continued to improve as the season progressed and turned in a breathtaking performance during the wet Brazilian Grand Prix, where he charged from 14th to third in the final 12 laps.In a lengthy stat pack released on Monday, F1 tyre supplier Pirelli confirmed Verstappens tally is the most since 1983, the first year data is available. Verstappen achieved the feat despite an average starting position of sixth on the grid.It is worth noting that 2016 was a record season in length, with 21 races on the calendar.Other stand-out stats include Fernando Alonsos 41 places gained on the opening lap of races, while Sebastian Vettel was overtaken just once all season -- by Verstappen in Brazil. Lewis Hamilton claimed the most overtakes in a single race, making 18 passes during the Chinese Grand Prix after contact at Turn 1.Aided by Verstappen, Red Bull recorded the most overtakes during the season (61 by Ricciardo and 15 by Kvyat before his demotion). The news was first reported on Gonzalezs Twitter account and confirmed by the Rockies. Gonzalez has a six-week window before position players have their first workout at spring training in Arizona. NFL Nation reporters pick out the biggest strength and the biggest weakness for every team heading into the 2016 season.AFC East | AFC North| AFC South | AFC West NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC WestAFC EASTBuffalo BillsBiggest strength: Cornerbacks. The Bills have two of the NFLs best in Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby, giving coach Rex Ryan the lockdown confidence on the outside that he needs to run his blitz-heavy scheme effectively.Biggest weakness: Pass rush. In past years, this might have been their offensive line or quarterback, but now the Bills must prove they can get after passers after posting a mere 21 sacks last season. Jerry Hughes cant do it all himself. -- Mike RodakMiami DolphinsBiggest strength: Defensive line. Ndamukong Suh, Mario Williams and Cameron Wake combine for 12 career Pro Bowl appearances and they should be a force together this season.Biggest weakness: Cornerbacks. Veteran Byron Maxwell is the only proven commodity out of this group and he struggled last season in Philadelphia. -- James WalkerNew England PatriotsBiggest strength: Elite play at quarterback with Tom Brady and top-level coaching to go with it. When it comes to places to start when building a team, those are usually the first two on the list.Biggest weakness: Running back, where outside of Dion Lewis -- who is coming off a torn ACL from Nov. 7 -- there are a lot of question marks. -- Mike ReissNew York JetsBiggest strength: The defensive line has three blue-chip talents -- Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams. Each of the 300-pounders has double-digit sack potential.Biggest weakness: Lack of quick-strike ability on offense. The Jets have talent at the skill positions, but theres no true home run threat. Statistically, Ryan Fitzpatrick was one of the worst deep-ball passers in the league last season. -- Rich CiminiAFC NORTHBaltimore RavensBiggest strength: Special teams. The Ravens return a Pro Bowl punter in Sam Koch and the second-most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history in Justin Tucker. Baltimore also has the best punt return team over the past three seasons and blocked five kicks in 2015.Biggest weakness: Cornerbacks. Shareece Wright, who was re-signed to be a starter, has struggled with his technique in the first two preseason games, and nickelback Jerraud Powers has been a step slow in covering crossing patterns. This is a concern for a pass defense that allowed a franchise-worst 30 touchdown passes a year ago. -- Jamison HensleyCincinnati BengalsBiggest strength: Defensive line. The Bengals Pro Bowl lineup of Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins combined for 24.5 sacks last season. Those two next to Michael Johnson and Domata Peko provide a line that has been consistently good.Biggest weakness: Pass-catchers. Its hard to say any team with A.J. Green could have a weakness from the passing attack, but the Bengals top two tight ends are hurt, and they dont have many options at receiver behind Green, with Brandon LaFell also nursing an injury and rookie Tyler Boyd unproven at this point. -- Katherine TerrellCleveland BrownsBiggest strength: Tight end. Coming off a career season and contract extension, Gary Barnidge is a pros pro, a tremendous route runner and a guy with great hands. Barnidge gives the offense a big and dependable target, which conceivably should open the field for players such as Josh Gordon and Corey Coleman.Biggest weakness: Defensive front seven. There are no elite pass-rushers or any impact players. Teams will run on the Browns until February. -- Pat McManamonPittsburgh SteelersBiggest strength: Vertical passing game. Quarterback?Ben Roethlisberger?throws the deep ball with precision. Going for 300-plus yards in the air is now considered an average day because of Pittsburghs insistence on testing corners and safeties deep.Biggest weakness: Secondary. This unit faces the most questions, particularly the starting corner spot opposite William Gay. But the Steelers have invested in several draft picks to bolster this spot. -- Jeremy FowlerAFC SOUTHHouston TexansBiggest strength: Front seven. This group is led by three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt, nose tackle Vince Wilfork and inside linebacker Brian Cushing. The Texans ranked fifth in the NFL with 45 sacks last season, and with Jadeveon Clowney, who looks poised for a breakout year, that number could increase in 2016.Biggest weakness: An unproven offense. Aside from receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back Lamar Miller, no other skill position players have produced at a high level before in the NFL. The pressure will be on quarterback Brock Osweiler and rookie receivers Will Fuller and Braxton Miller to produce right away. -- Sarah BarshopIndianapolis ColtsBiggest strength: Quarterback. The Colts have used Andrew Lucks overall talents to make the playoffs in three of the past four seasons. And theyll continue to ride Lucks talents this season.Biggest weakness: Offensive line and defense. The Colts have struggled in these areas for the past four years. Indianapolis inability to block well caused it to use five different quarterbacks last season. The Colts have finished 20th or worse on defense in three of Chuck Paganos four seasons as coach. -- Mike WellsJacksonville JaguarsBiggest strength: Playmakers. The Jaguars have a good supply of playmakers in wide receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns and tight end Julius Thomas, and they added running back Chris Ivory in free agency. If WR Marqise Lee continues to stay healthy and performs the way he did in the spring, the Jaguars offense could be one of the most potent in the NFL.Biggest weakness: Offensive line, especially on the left side. LT Luke Joeckel hasnt become the dominant player the Jags hoped for when they drafted him No. 2 overall in 2013, and he may end up at left guard. Kelvin Beachum is coming off a torn left ACL and his effectiveness is in question. QB Blake Bortles has been sacked 106 times in his first two seasons -- some of which were his own fault -- and the O-line has to do a better job of protecting him. -- Mike DiRoccoTennessee TitansBiggest strength: Running game. This should be an area of strength considering the Titans invested in two top backs -- DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry -- as well as a new center in Ben Jones and a new right tackle in Jack Conklin.Biggest weakness: Secondary. The defensive backs need to show they can be far better than last seasons group and make some plays on the ball. They can start by not playing so far off receivers, which coaches dont want so often. -- Paul KuharskyAFC WESTDenver BroncosBiggest strength: The Broncos have speed across the depth chart and it shows, particularly in their depth at edge rusher and cornerback. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has the flexibility to rotate players and vary his looks so that the end result is Denver can consistently affect opposing quarterbacks in a wide variety of down and distance situations.Biggest weakness: The Broncos dont know if its actually a weakness yet, so it might simply be the biggest question right now: There is a scenario in which Denver has two quarterbacks -- Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch -- who have never started a regular-season game. Siemian has played just one regular-season snap overall (a kneel-down last December). There are decisions still to be made, but the Broncos have already shown they are not deterred by the prospect of youth at quarterback. -- Jeff LegwoldKansas City ChiefsBiggest strength: Depth at running back. When Jamaal Charles is healthy, the Chiefs can go three deep like few teams in the NFL with Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West completing the trio. Ware and West combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards and score 11 touchdowns in Charles absence last season.Biggest weakness: Pass rush. The Chiefs went through training camp without either of their two top rushers, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. With no indication that Houston will return any time soon, this could be a season-long problem. -- Adam TeicherOakland RaidersBiggest strength: Oaklands relative youth. Derek Carr, Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack have yet to turn 26 but they also have yet to experience a winning NFL season, which is something the Raiders have not done since 2002.Biggest weakness: Well, more youth. Indeed, the biggest strength for this purportedly up-and-coming team is also its greatest weakness. In Oakland this season, its youthful exuberance versus lack of grizzled experience, especially with the retirements of Charles Woodson and Justin Tuck. So who steps up? Carr and Mack believe it is up to them. -- Paul GutierrezSan Diego ChargersBiggest strength: Philip Rivers. The Chargers QB hasnt missed a start in a decade and needs a little over 1,500 passing yards to eclipse Dan Fouts as the franchises all-time passing leader.Biggest weakness: Run defense. The 288 rushing yards San Diego gave up to the Titans was the most allowed by any team in Week 1 of preseason play. However, with the starters playing most of the first half, San Diegos defense allowed just 63 rushing yards in the Week 2 preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. -- Eric D. WilliamsNFC EASTDallas CowboysBiggest strength: Offensive line. The Cowboys have built their team through the offensive line with Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, Lael Collins and Doug Free. They signed Frederick to a six-year extension through 2023. They have Smith signed through 2023. They hope to sign Martin to a long-term deal next summer. There isnt a team in the NFL that doesnt envy the Cowboys line.Biggest weakness: Pass rush. Dallas hasnt been able to build through the draft on the defensive line as well as the O-line. DeMarcus Lawrence (second round, 2014) led the Cowboys in sacks last season with eight but will miss the first four games of 2016 because of a suspension. Randy Gregory (second round, 2015) is on the reserve/did not report list and is in a treatment facility. He is looking at a longer suspension than four games. Among the defensive linemen eligible to play Week 1, tackle Tyrone Crawford has the most sacks with eight. The Cowboys will have to make do with what they have up front this season. -- Todd ArcherNew York GiantsBiggest strength: Passing offense. Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr., more specifically. The Giants are built around these two players, and without either, they are done. Mannings experience and pre-snap reads help them work around their offensive line deficiencies. Beckham draws the attention of multiple defenders. Hes one of the most dangerous weapons in the league, as evidenced by his 25 touchdown receptions the past two years.Biggest weakness: Right side of the offensive line. Right tackle Marshall Newhouse is a backup. Right guard John Jerry is an average starter. Their combined experience makes the right side of the Giants line vulnerable. Its a good thing the Giants have Manning and Beckham to occasionally mask this weakness. -- Jordan RaananPhiladelphia EaglesBiggest strength: Defensive line. Fletcher Cox and Vinny Curry lead a front that should do plenty of damage in Jim Schwartzs attack 4-3 scheme. With Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham and Bennie Logan also in the mix, this looks to be the most potent unit on the team.Biggest weakness: Wide receiver. To this point, no player has grabbed a leading role alongside Jordan Matthews. While there is talent in the room, from?Nelson Agholor to the newly acquired Dorial Green-Beckham, questions persist as to whether the Eagles have enough on the outside to give the offense the type of production it needs. -- Tim McManusWashington RedskinsBiggest strength: The passing game. That starts with the receiving talent -- DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Jamison Crowder and tight end Jordan Reed. The Redskins are able to create matchup issues because of this talent. They have speed (Jackson), toughness (Garcon), quickness (Reed) and shiftiness (Crowder). And theyre good enough that first-round pick Josh Doctson, still out with Achilles tendinitis, isnt even missed. But the team also features an offensive line that protects well and a quarterback in Kirk Cousins who understands where to go with the ball. The Redskins will be more aggressive on certain downs (first) with passing the ball this season. Their play-action game could be scary on this down, with the addition of tight end Vernon Davis.Biggest weakness: The run defense. The Redskins have to prove theyre better than last season when they ranked 31st in the NFL, allowing 4.80 yards per carry. Last season they struggled to get off blocks up front -- especially in nickel packages -- and therefore struggled to make plays. Washingtons secondary should be improved, but the front must do its part on early downs. There are questions about the pass rush, but the team can be put in better situations with stronger run defense, leading to more third-and-long situations. -- John KeimNFC NORTHChicago BearsBiggest strength: Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and his staff. Chicago did plenty of work to upgrade the defense in the offseason, but Fangios coaching style is what ties it all together. The Bears are fortunate to have such an experienced and respected coordinator to oversee the rebuild on defense.Biggest weakness: Lack of overall roster depth. The Bears are a couple more key injuries (offensive line, cornerback, tight end, wide receiver) away from being in serious trouble in the NFC North. -- Jeff DickersonDetroit LionsBiggest strength: Defensive front. Having a defensive front that can rotate and initiate attack has been a priority for new defensive coordinator Teryl Austin because it helps out the rest of the scheme. This years line has a star in pass rushing end Ezekiel Ansah, a former All-Pro in Haloti Ngata and a couple of emerging players in end Devin Taylor and tackle Tyrunn Walker. This might be Detroits deepest defensive line in years and an obvious strength.Biggest weakness: Offensive line. While Riley Reiff (RT) and Larry Warford (RG) have looked good, the Lions have questions at center with Travis Swanson,?and at left guard with Laken Tomlinson. And the left tackle, Taylor Decker, is a rookie who will have some issues as he learns. This is a weakness for the Lions and could cause some major problems if they cant protect Matthew Stafford long enough to make correct reads or open up holes for Ameer Abdullah. -- Michael RothsteinGreen Bay PackersBiggest strength: The Packers biggest strength is their winning experience, culture and internal expectations. Theyre one of only two teams (the Patriots are the other) to make the playoffs each of the past seven years, and young players quickly learn from the veterans what is expected around Green Bay.Biggest weakness: If theres a weakness, its on the defensive line, where inexperience dominates. Going into Week 1, the only defensive linemen available who have played in an NFL regular-season game are Mike Daniels and Letroy Guion. -- Rob DemovskyMinnesota VikingsBiggest strength: The Vikings defense has become the identity of the team, and its also their biggest strength heading into 2016. Coach Mike Zimmers double-A gap blitz package has helped turn the Vikings into one of the leagues best pass rushing defenses, and the group should disrupt quarterbacks again this season.Biggest weakness: The Vikings biggest weakness also involves a pass rush -- namely, their inability to stop one from affecting Teddy Bridgewater. No quarterback in the league was pressured more often last season, and the Vikings spent considerable resources trying to fix their offensive line before 2016. -- Ben Goessling(Editors note: The information above was published prior to Bridgewaters injury on Tuesday at practice).NFC SOUTHAtlanta FalconsBiggest strength: Julio Jones. Arguably the leagues most dominant receiver coming off a season in which he fell just 129 yards shy of an NFL-record 2,000 receiving yards. And Jones is always striving to be better.Biggest weakness: The pass rush. The Falcons had a league-low 19 sacks last season, but they hope the addition of veteran Dwight Freeney will improve that number dramatically. Plus, much is expected from former eighth overall pick Vic Beasley Jr.?in Year 2. -- Vaughn McClureCarolina PanthersBiggest strength: Quarterback Cam Newton. The threat the NFL MVP creates in the run and pass game keeps defensive coordinators up at night. Add No. 1 receiver Kelvin Benjamin back into the mix with the rest of the starters returning, and Newton will be even more dangerous.Biggest weakness: Secondary. I easily could have said the defense was the strength since it has ranked in the top 10 each of the past four seasons. But since the weakness is a secondary that likely will include two rookie starters, it seemed like a conflict. But from what Ive seen of the corners thus far the weakness doesnt appear terribly weak. -- David NewtonNew Orleans SaintsBiggest strength: Passing attack. For the 11th straight year, the Saints biggest strength is their passing attack. QB Drew Brees has led the NFL in passing yards for four of the past five seasons -- and the Saints might be even more dynamic after adding rookie WR Michael Thomas and veteran TE Coby Fleener to complement rising star receiver Brandin Cooks.Biggest weakness: Defense. The defense is coming off a historically bad season in which it shattered the NFL record for TD passes allowed (45). The D cant help but be better -- and it has been very good for most of the preseason. But the pass rush remains a huge question mark, especially after injuries to young linemen Hauoli Kikaha and Sheldon Rankins. -- Mike TriplettTampa Bay BuccaneersBiggest strength: Running game. The Bucs will continue to be a run-first offense. Doug Martin is a tough inside and outside runner, while Charles Sims gives them great flexibility as a runner in the short passing game and downfield. An honorable mention on the strength meter is the Bucs have a lot more depth along the defensive line this season.Biggest weakness:?Kicking game. Roberto Aguayo has missed three kicks in two preseason games and is now struggling in practice. In the third preseason game against the Browns, Aguayo made three field goals, including a 48-yarder, and he made all three extra points. Does that mean the kicking woes are officially behind him? Well find out soon enough. -- Jenna LaineNFC WESTArizona CardinalsBiggest strength: Offensive continuity. The Cardinals return every playmaker from a year ago, meaning everyone who caught a pass from Carson Palmer and everyone who scored an offensive touchdown in 2015 are back.Biggest weakness: Uncertainty at starting right cornerback. It would have been Justin Bethels job had he not fractured his foot and required offseason surgery. While he was on the mend, rookie cornerback Brandon Williams won the starting job for now with an impressive OTAs, minicamp and start to training camp. Bethel, who just recently returned to practice, further hurt his case by missing the first three weeks of training camp after suffering a setback a few weeks before camp began. -- Josh WeinfussLos Angeles RamsBiggest strength: Running game. The Rams ground attack is anchored by the boundless ability of star tailback Todd Gurley, who finished third in rushing yards as a rookie despite having to wait until Week 4 to receive a sizable workload. Benny Cunningham, Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green have also impressed throughout training camp, giving the Rams plenty of depth in the backfield despite the bizarre absence of Tre Mason.Biggest weakness: The passing game. The Rams finished last in passing yards, passing touchdowns and QBR last season, and their hopes for a turnaround in that department will fall largely on four rookies -- quarterback Jared Goff, receiver Pharoh Cooper, and tight ends Tyler Higbee and Temarrick Hemingway. -- Alden GonzalezSan Francisco 49ersBiggest strength: Secondary. There might not be a true superstar in the bunch, but theres no shortage of capable players back there. Antoine Bethea provides the steady veteran presence at safety with Eric Reid and Jaquiski Tartt offering a lot of upside. And at cornerback, Tramaine Brock remains underrated and surrounded by an eclectic mix of skills in?Jimmie Ward, Rashard Robinson, Will Redmond, Chris Davis, Keith Reaser and others. The 49ers figure to have some tough decisions to make here when setting the 53-man roster, which is a good thing.Biggest weakness: Quarterback. Until the Niners find a good resolution, its hard to pinpoint anything other than QB. Yes, the receiver corps could use some help, but the choice between Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick as the starting quarterback still doesnt inspire much confidence. Coach Chip Kellys offense has made stars of lesser quarterbacks in the past so there is hope, but its clear an upgrade would provide the offense a much higher ceiling. -- Nick WagonerSeattle SeahawksBiggest strength: The secondary. The Seahawks return cornerback Richard Sherman, along with safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. Jeremy Lane and DeShawn Shead are versatile players capable of playing either right cornerback or nickel. This is a deep and talented group that will once again make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks.Biggest weakness: The offensive line. No surprise here. The Seahawks are spending less money on their offensive line than any other team in the NFL. They will have at least three new starters, and Justin Britt, who played left guard last season, is making the switch to center. The interior of the line -- with Mark Glowinski, Britt and Germain Ifedi -- has looked good throughout camp. But the tackle spots, where Bradley Sowell, Garry Gilliam and JMarcus Webb are competing for playing time, remains a serious question mark. -- Sheil Kapadia Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Wholesale China Jerseys Cheap Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping Cheap Jerseys Wholesale Wholesale Authentic Jerseys ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Notre Dame will count this as progress after a week of upheaval and adjustments for a beleaguered defense. They might have been only leprechaun-sized steps forward, but the Fighting Irish will take it.Notre Dame tightened up its tackling and held Syracuse to seven points in the second half, and DeShone Kizer made up for most of the Irishs ills with one of the best passing games in school history.Kizer threw for a career-best 471 yards and the Fighting Irish snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating Syracuse 50-33 Saturday. In the first game since coach Brian Kelly fired coordinator Brian VanGorder, the Irish (2-3) allowed more than 30 points for the fourth time this season and 489 yards to Syracuses up-tempo spread offense.I wasnt crazy about going against this offense. I much rather have been going against something a little bit different because of their tempo and how they spread you out and with all the freshman DBs that (we) play. Thats not always the greatest matchup, Kelly said. But I felt like the morale was really good on Wednesday and thats what I was looking to get back. The morale. The tackling on punt coverage still needs work. Syracuses Brisly Estime had a 74-yard return late in the first half that setup a touchdown and left Kelly fuming on the sideline. Estime added a 38-yard return.Kizer made it all OK for Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium. He connected on three touchdown passes -- two to Equanimeous St. Brown -- that covered at least 54 yards each and ran for a score. Kizer hit a rough patch at end of the first half when he took a 17-yard sack that knocked the Irish out of field goal range and threw an interception.Kelly said he told Kizer at halftime to stop trying to force big plays. When we went back out, relaxed up, took his words and ran with it, said Kizer, who threw for more yards in a victory than any quarterback in Notre Dame history.Eric Dungey passed for 363 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three scores for Syracuse (2-3).THE TAKEAWAYSyracuse: The Orange defense has already been shredded by Lamar Jackson and Louisville and now Kizer and Notre Dame. An in-season fix seems unlikely. The middle of the field always seems to be open against the Orange secondary. Mike Hughes Jersey. .That is a very, very young defense, first-year Syracuse coach Dino Babers said. You have to give them time to grow up.FYI: Clemson and Deshaun Watson play the Orange on Nov. 5.Notre Dame: Kelly elevated Greg Hudson from analyst to coordinator and got more involved in the defense this week. Kelly kept his pledge to play more defensive players and make tweaks. The Irish mixed in some 3-4 alignments and their defensive backs changed techniques to better guard deep routes. Cornerback Luke Cole was moved to nickelback, lining up inside instead of out. There is still work to be done. The secondary, at times playing four freshmen, was porous and the front got little pressure. Positives: The Orange ran for only 3.4 yards per carry and the Irish did a solid job of tackling after the catch. Syracuse had 266 yards in the last three quarters. We need to continue to improve on tackling, defensive lineman Isaac Rochell said. I would say we did better, but we still left a lot out there.ONE FOR THE NEW GUYThe players picked Hudson to lead the singing of the alma mater after the win. They did it acapella since the band didnt make the trip.He put a lot of power in the position coaches hands and he put a lot of power in our hands as player and said, `Lets just come together as a family, safety Drue Tranquill said.TOUCHDOWN PER MINUTEThe first five minutes produced five touchdowns, one for each possession. Plus, Notre Dame had its second blocked PAT returned for a 2-point defensive conversion this season. The Irish did it against Texas, too. Jarron Jones got the block again and this time Cole picked up the bouncing ball and scored.Add it all up and it was 23-13 Irish with 10:06 left in the first quarter. They have a dynamic offense and when they come out its a big splash, Babers said.UP NEXTNotre Dame: The Fighting Irish make their first trip to North Carolina State.Syracuse: The Orange play at Wake Forest.---Follow Ralph D. John Saunders first sat down with us to host The Sports Reporters in the fall of 2001. Wholesale Timberwolves Jerseys . The great Dick Schaap had been hosting the show for the 10 years or so before that. But Dick had just undergone hip surgery that went tragically wrong, none of us knowing at the time that he would never come out of the hospital.I knew full well about Johns body of work at ESPN all the way back to 1986, about his talent and versatility, his friendship with Jim Valvano, the tireless work John had done for The V Foundation for Cancer Research as a founding board member. But I was about to learn, starting with that first Sunday and then across all the Sundays, about all the good in him, all the humor and intelligence and immense decency. Most of all, I would learn about his gift of friendship. If you have ever watched The Sports Reporters, you know that we have long been having the kind of conversations about sports that they now have about politics all over the television dial on Sunday mornings, with Mitch Albom and Bob Ryan and Bill Rhoden, with Jemele Hill and Howard Bryant and Israel Gutierrez and all our other panelists. And what I knew by September 2001, after all my Sundays with Schaap, was how easy he made hosting the show look. What no one knew at the time was whether John would even want to be the full-time host, be part of the conversation on a permanent basis, be working with grown-ups so often acting like great, big kids. Or people talking sports at the end of the bar.But John was great from the start. He was tremendous and generous, allowing the rest of us to look good -- sometimes no small feat, believe me. But he really was that good at this kind of television. Best of all, people liked John Saunders. Somehow he had the gift that the very best broadcasters have, in that the people who watched him felt as if he were their friend, too. He made them feel like they were part of our conversation.I go through airports, John said, and people are always telling me the same thing, that sometimes theyre talking right along with us.Later I would tell him that, because of his grace and charm and ability to keep the whole thing under control, he was like Sidney Poitier in To Sir, With Love, bringing order to the kids in the back of the classroom. After the first show, I thought to myself, What in the world did I get myself into? John said once, laughing. My dear friend John Saunders died suddenly on Wednesday at the age of 61. He was a husband to Wanda and a father to two daughters. His brother Bernie, his best friend, was a hockey player, just as John was. We used to joke that John was another guy who came down out of Canada and didnt just take up one good job in television -- it was as if he wanted to take up all of them. He was a brilliant studio host, he could do play-by-play and he could somehow navigate, with his usual grace, all the housekeeping of the championship ceremonies after the last game of the college football season. He made it all look easy, Mike Breen, the voice of the NBA on ESPN and ABC, said on Wednesday morning. I used to marvel at the way he made all his jobs look that easy, even though those of us in the business know they werent.John had all the best stories about Valvano, and not just the funny ones, but about all the times, at the end of Valvanos long, terrible season battling cancer, when he would hold Valvano in his arms as a way of stopping the chills, even in the hours before Jimmy stood up and gave one of the most moving speeches in the history of sports, his Dont give up, dont ever give up speech at the ESPYS.Seeing how weak he was, I still dont know how he gave that speech, John would always tell me. I dont even know how he was able to stay standing. That was about his heart.Johns heart understood Vs. John had a ton of heart himself. He was an ex-hockey player, and he underwent so many surgeries because of his hockey career. He also suffered from diabetes, and there were some Sunday mornings when we would all see how weak he was when he showed up in our green room, his hands shaking, drinking orange juice, just trying to feel well enough to do the show. But he always did. And he would, because of his great heart, make it look easy again. He had a terrible fall one Saturday when he was hosting his college football shows on ABC. Another time there was a car accident, one John was lucky to survive. Of course, he came back from the accident and came back from the fall and, before long, was back in his chair on Sunday morning. There was a Sunday morning when he wasnt feeling particularly well, so right before he started talking at the top of the show, I leaned over and tapped him on the knee. He got through the show, of course. But it became a tradition with us, or a superstition. I did it every Sunday after that, all the way to our last show together a couple of weeks ago. That day he was telling me again how people were always asking why Lupica was hitting him every Sunday just as the show started.John laughed, again, and said, I tell them that your hitting me on one of my bad knees was just your way of showing how much you love me.There was no way to properly express, or explain, the love that I felt for John Saunders, who loved Wanda and his girls; who loved that he had lived long enough to see Barack Obama become president of the United States; who loved hockey, and his work, and the life his work had given him once he got to this country, permanently, from Canada. And you should know how much he loved doing his parting shots on Sunday; they were beautifully written, passionate when they had to be, funny when they had to be. But always smart. We have had two permanent hosts on The Sports Reporters: Mr. Schaap and Mr. Saunders. Ive had the uncommon good fortune to sit with both of them more than anybody in the history of the show. It should have been a hard thing for John to follow Dick. It became one more thing that he made look extraordinarily easy. In another time in sports, often the highest praise for professionalism was to say this: It was like watching Henry Aaron hit. Sitting next to John Saunders was like that. It was exactly like that.He is survived by his family, and his friends, and by this network, and by his business. John made his living with words. So many of us do. This is my own way, with memory and profound sadness, of saying one word I never expected to say this soon, not to the big man on my right for all those Sunday mornings: Goodbye. It was a measure of redemption for Italy after a loss to Spain, also in a shootout, in the semifinals. "The main thing tonight was our character. We showed fantastic character. We never gave up," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. This shootout capped an entertaining match at the Arena Fonte Nova, where Alessandro Diamanti scored one goal and set up another for Italy and Edinson Cavani equalized twice for Uruguay. Italy defender Davide Astori opened the scoring in the 24th minute after Diamantis free kick rattled the post and Cavani equalized for Uruguay in the 58th with an angled shot. Diamanti restored Italys lead in the 73rd with another free kick that went in directly but not to be outdone Cavani drew Uruguay level again five minutes later with an equally splendid free kick of his own. Uruguay has now lost seven of eight bronze-medal matches at the World Cup, Copa America and Confederations Cup, including a loss to Germany at the 2010 World Cup. This defeat was surprising, considering that Uruguay appeared to be the fresher squad entering the game. "I told my players before the match, Its Italy, boys, so watch out," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. "You cant just go by what you read in the newspapers. Even if they were tired they played a great match. They controlled the ball possession in first half and they made us suffer." For Italy it marked another step forward after finishing runner-up to Spain at last years European Championship. "We still have a long way to go but were on the right road," Prandelli said. In the shootout, the 35-year-old Buffon set the tone by stopping the first shot in the shootout from Diego Forlan, then also saved from Martin Caceres before smothering Walter Garganos effort to end the game. "Today would have been tough if we hadnt had this character," Buffon said. "We showed what were worth down to the end. It would have been upsetting to not win because playing this match two days after the game vs. Spain was very difficult. But we went out with the right spirit." Alberto Aquilani, Stephan El Shaarawy and Emanuele Giaccherini converted for Italy while Mattia De Sciglios shot was blocked bby Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. "Buffon is a great champion. He plays with a kids enthusiasm," Prandelli said. "He was upset the other night because he wasnt able to save a penalty. And he told the squad this morning that if it goes to penalties today, Dont worry Ill take care of it." Italy was without usual starters Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo and a handful of others and ended with 10 men after Riccardo Montolivo picked up his second yellow card in the 110th minute for a foul on Luis Suarez. Uruguay was at full strength, featuring virtually the same lineup from its 2-1 semifinal loss to Brazil. With an added day of rest, Uruguay had its usual strike trio of Forlan, Suarez and Cavani in place. Still, for the first 90 minutes it was a balanced match featuring numerous opportunities for both sides. With Leonardo Bonucci on the bench after missing the key shot in the shootout loss to Spain, Astori saw his first action in the tournament and he quickly took advantage. After hitting the post, Diamantis free kick deflected off the back of Muslera and Astori was waiting for an easy tap in. However, there were doubts over whether the ball had already gone in when Astori touched it. FIFA first awarded the goal to Diamanti then gave it to Astori at halftime -- making it his first goal for Italy, in his fifth appearance. While Italy appeared content to head into the changing room with a one-goal lead, Uruguay came out energized in the second half and Cavani slotted a shot past outstretched Buffon after being set up by Gargano. Diamantis goal, also his first for Italy, came with a curling free kick from 28 metres (yards) over Uruguays wall and into the right corner beyond the reach of diving goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. The lead didnt last long, though, as Cavani then produced a shot over Italys wall that dipped down in under the crossbar with Buffon unable to stop it despite getting his finger tips on it. The two goals gave Cavani 17 in 54 appearances for Uruguay and they also may have boosted his price on the transfer market, as there is speculation he could lead Napoli after leading Italys Serie A with 29 goals last season. In extra time, Uruguay dominated but could not find the target with a series of shots from beyond the area while Italy appeared exhausted. Fortunately for the Italians, Buffon was still alert and made the decisive saves. NEW YORK -- The captain is ready to test his twice broken ankle. . Derek Jeter will start a rehabilitation assignment Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the first step toward returning to the New York Yankees. He is scheduled to play at least five innings at shortstop. Whether he will be able to don his pinstripes before the All-Star break is to be seen. "I think he has to feel comfortable playing," manager Joe Girardi said Friday. "He really hasnt had a whole lot of at-bats. He has not played a whole lot of infield. So (we need to see him) being able to go back-to-back days, back-to-back-to-back days that sort of thing." Jeter joins third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the minor leagues. Jeter is starting with the Yankees top minor league club because he appears to be further along than A-Rod, who has played two games for Class A Charleston and is is hitless in his first four at-bats. Rodriguezs game Friday with the Tampa Yankees, a high-A club, was postponed by rain. He has said he thinks he will need the full 20 days allowed for a rehab assignment to prepare to play after having left hip surgery in January. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman would not commit to seeing either player back before the break that begins July 15. "Those guys will be ready when theyre ready," Cashman said. "Thats it." Jeter broke his ankle in the opener of the AL championship series on Oct. 13 and had surgery soon after. The player who rarely concedes hes injured vowed to return for opening day but he only played five spring training games because of soreness in the foot. A new break was discovered on April 18. On Friday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., Jeter took six simulated at-bats against minor league pitchers and ran the bases after putting the ball in play. He also did one of his signature jump throws to first after fielding a grounder in the hole during defensive drills. Five players have started at shortstop in Jeters absence, and Robinson Cano is looking forward to some stability there with the return of the 13-time All-Star. "We all know what kind of guy he is and what energy he brings to the team," Cano said. "Not only that -- also young players to myself the way he gives good advice, and everybody just looks to him. Thats all we want. We want our guy here and hes our shortstop." The Yankees infielder who might be closest to a return is Eduardo Nunez. He started 26 games at shortstop before going out with a left oblique strain June 6. Nunez played for Double-A Trenton on Thursday and was 0 for 5. In five rehab games, he is 3 for 13 with two runs and two stolen bases. "Hes played this year and hes has spring training," Girardi said, comparing Nunez to Jeter and Rodriguez. Also, Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda said his hip flexor feels OK and that he was cleared to throw a bullpen session Friday. . -- Ryan Blaney provided more evidence that Penske Racings No. . -- Brandon Jennings made the most of his first game with the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night. . But when it comes to determining if Raymond will find a place on the Leafs roster when training camp concludes in a week, well, that decision will ultimately fall to the head coach. North Dakota State coach Chris Klieman says All-America middle linebacker Nick DeLuca will not practice this week after he suffered a separated shoulder in the top-ranked Bisons season-opening game. The Bison, who have won the past five FCS national titles, are in a bye week before returning to action Sept. 10 when they host Eastern Washington.Speaking at his weekly news conference Monday, Klieman said DeLucas status will be re-evaluated next week. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound DeLuca, a senior nominated for STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Yeear, was injured early in the third quarter of North Dakota States 24-17 overtime win over Charleston Southern in the FCS Kickoff on Saturday night. He was replaced by junior linebacker Matt Plank, who finished the game with six tackles.DeLuca, the only FCS player up for the Butkus Award, which honors the nations best linebackers, started all 15 games last season and led the team with 135 tackles. The?Miami Hurricanes?football team has dismissed freshman wide receiver Sam Bruce, one of its top 2016 signees, for multiple violations of team rules. Austin Rivers Jersey .Freshman wide receiver Sam Bruce has been dismissed from the Miami football program based on multiple violations of team rules and a failure on his part to meet the clear expectations established to be a part of the Miami football program, Miami said in a statement. We wish Sam well with his future academic and football endeavors.Bruce rated as the second-highest recruit in the Hurricanes 2016 class. He was ranked No. 77 in the ESPN 300.Bruce had yet to appear in a game for the Hurricanes after serving a three-game suspension to start the year and suffering a non-football injury to what the school described as a lower extremity. His first suspension was for a violation of team rules. DeAndre Jordan Jersey . The recently retired Stern was elected Friday to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and will be enshrined with the class of 2014 on Aug. NEW YORK -- Wade Miley hears the talk about lifting the bottom of the strike zone in an effort to spark offense and insists there has been too much tinkering already.I dont know why they just cant leave the game alone, the Seattle pitcher said. Cant we just go play and try to get three outs and go from there?Concerned about the drop in offense in recent years, Major League Baseball has studied whether to restore the lower edge of the strike zone from just beneath the kneecap to its pre-1996 level -- at the top of the kneecap. Any change for 2017 would require an agreement with the players association, which is skeptical. Membership is split.I think its kind of outrageous what theyre trying to do with the strike zone, Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood said. Obviously, Im biased. Im a pitcher. But at the same time, its shrunk drastically, maybe even in the last five or six years.Baseball people talk about the strike zone the way most discuss the weather: constant complaints about hard-to-fathom change.Wood threw 11.9 percent of his pitches last year at the bottom of the strike zone, according to Fangraphs, which defined the lowest portion as between 1.5 and 1.75 feet off the ground. That was the highest-percentage in the major leagues, just ahead of Minnesotas Kyle Gibson at 11.3 percent and Mileys 11 percent. When the strike zone was last changed, umpires took years to adjust.MLB has used computer software to track umpires strike zones since 2001, which has helped bring the umpiring staff into closer alignment on balls and strikes. Umpires receive a grade now after every game worked behind the plate, and that has resulted in an expansion of the strike zone over much of the past decade.Any adjustment to a new rule-book definition would take time.Theyd have to start in the minor leagues. I think for some of the guys to try to adjust to a new strike zone is going to be chaotic, said umpire Bob Davidson, who worked his first big league game in 1982. I hope they just leave it the way it is. I think we call it now the way the rule book states.Offense has increased this season. Through Thursdays games, the big league batting average is .256, the highest for a first half since 2010, and teams have combined for 2.31 homers per game, the most in the first half since the Steroids Era peak in 20000. Blake Griffin Jersey. But one trend remains constant: strikeouts.Teams combined to average 15.95 strikeouts per game in June, the third-highest month in major league history behind September 2015 (15.96) and April 2016 (16.26), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last 28 months dating to September 2011 are the highest-strikeout 28 months in big league history. Were at an interesting time in the game, Gibson said. I think they should ask players about strikeouts and how much they care about strikeouts because I dont think its as frowned-upon as it used to be -- because a guy whos striking out a lot is probably also hitting a lot of homers. And if you ask anybody in here if theyll take a 150-strikeout and 30-homer year, theyre going to say, yeah, sign me up.The strike zone has changed many times -- by definition, not just opinion, like Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon calling Laz Diazs zone last weekend amorphic. The top was moved from the armpits to the top of the shoulders ahead of the 1963 season, then lowered before 1969 following a drop in offense and redefined in 1988 as the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants. If the bottom came up, would the top come up, too? said Toronto pitcher R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner. If they want to introduce an era of better offense, then that would be one way to go, for sure. Because if youre having to elevate balls, thats right into the swing path of most hitters. But just raising the bottom alone likely would result in only a slight change.I think thats a tough pitch for umpires to call already. Not only are they blocked a little bit by the catcher, but the pitches that I throw down there arent straight four-seamers. Theyre sinking down already, Gibson said. I think most of those probably arent called strikes. Theyre probably groundballs or swings and misses or foul balls. ... But, yeah, raising the strike zone for me is going to be a little more difficult, depending on how they call that. But its just like any other rule change. Just like the slide rule at second. Im going to have to make an adjustment and hopefully its not an adjustment that causes me to get hit a whole lot. DENVER -- The game between the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night ?was delayed because of a power surge at the Pepsi Center. .Denver led 90-85 with 9:18 remaining in the fourth quarter when a bank of lights near the ceiling went dark. The teams stayed on the court and shot jumpers until the game was restarted. . In taking its goal tally to 99 in all competitions already this season, City delivered another demonstration of its lethal firepower at Etihad Stadium to set up a fourth-round match at home to another second-tier team -- Watford. . Clarke was injured while practicing on the Doha Golf Club range after the pro-am on Tuesday. The Northern Irishman arrived at the course on Wednesday hoping to start, but after hitting a few balls on the practice putting green Clarke advised officials he was not fit to play. . I cant pinpoint a date, but I do remember a player from my youth. Brian Downing was with the Chicago White Sox at a time when I listened to every game I possibly could on the radio. That particular season the late great Harry Caray was calling the White Sox games. The hat-trick Bruce Reid, Anthony Stuart, Brett Lee, Daniel Christian, Clint McKay, James Faulkner. That is the list of Australians to have taken an ODI hat-trick, six names in total after Faulkner joined the group in this match. And he did so across two overs, his wickets coming from the last ball of the 46th over and the first two deliveries of the 48th over. First was Kusal Perera, who was lbw trying to reverse-sweep a cutter. Then it was Angelo Mathews, who drilled one down the ground and was caught just inside the boundary by Moises Henriques. And finally Thisara Perera was bowled while backing away and trying to cut. Three ODI hat-tricks were taken last year, but this was the first for 2016.The sitter It was the sittingest sitter that ever sat. In the 42nd over of Sri Lankas innings, Kusal Perera got a top edge off Moises Henriques that lobbed up and straight down into the hands of Adam Zampa at short third man. And then down further, out of the hands of Adam Zampa at short third man and onto the ground. It was such an easy chance that it was genuinely baffling that Zampa had managed to drop it. Perhaps, having finished his own 10 overs and claimed 3 for 42 earlier, his concentration had waned. It was a costly enough miss - Perera was on 29 and went on to make 54. The long walk homeDinesh Chandimal is a batsman who puts store in personal milestones. He celebrates his own with abandon, and his team-mates with even more abandon. So when he was out on 48, going for a Sri Lankan record of six fifties in a row, his reaction was endearingly predictable. Chandimal dropped his shoulders. Chandimal dropped his head. Dragging his feet and the bat behind him, he trudged sullenly through the outfield, like a man who had been roughed up and robbed at the bus halt, and was left with no option but to begin walking home - a brass band playing a sombre tune in the background. The openerNathan Lyon did not play in the first ODI but was rapidly into the action in this second match. After Mitchell Starc delivered the first over of the game, Lyon sent down the second and immediately gained some noticeable turn. For some teams it is nothing out of the ordinary to open with a spinner in an ODI, but it is a rarity for Australia. In fact, only once before have Australia used the tactic in the first innings of an ODI - when Mark Waugh shared the new ball against South Africa at the SCG on Australia Day, 1998. (STATS) -- Liberty has made no effort to hide its desire to join an FBS conference and play with the big boys, a stance that was reignited this week when school president Jerry Falwell Jr. Authentic Jordans For Cheap . said the Flames might make the leap in a matter of months.Beating one of the premier teams in the FCS should make them a bit more attractive to potential suitors.Theres a golden opportunity to land a signature win Saturday against No. 3 Jacksonville State, the Ohio Valley Conference power that made it to the national championship game last season and the highest-ranked team that will have ever visited Lynchburgs Williams Stadium.Ive heard so much about the environment at Liberty, Gamecocks coach John Grass said. I think its one of the best in FCS football.Falwell Jr. is hoping the 27-year-old stadium will soon be one of the better -- albeit tinier, at 19,200 -- environments in the FBS. He announced in 2012 that the Flames (1-2) were ready to jump to the FBS, and though some brief flirtation with the Sun Belt never materialized, there could soon be a new opportunity. The Big 12 is currently considering expansion candidates -- a vote is possible as early as an Oct. 17 board meeting -- and the domino effect could leave either the American Athletic Conference or Conference USA looking for a new member or two.Grass team is coming off a 27-26 win over Coastal Carolina, another former Big South member thats making the move to the FBS. Following this transition season, the Chanticleers are off to the Sun Belt.We just talked about Coastal Carolinas budget and moving up; well, Liberty has the same kind of budget and wanting to move up, they are just waiting on a conference to take them, Grass said. They have the biggest budget in FCS football and maybe some of the lower level Power 5 schools, so they have a lot going on with their university and in the right direction. All that speculation has little meaning to Turner Gills current team, which is 0-for-2 against FBS schools in September after recording FBS wins in each of the past two seasons. The Flames are simply concentrating on finding a way back to the FCS playoffs, which they missed out on last season after making their inaugural trip in 2014.Theres an automatic path in by winning the Big South, but a victory over Jacksonville State could give them a reasonable chance of an at-large berth should they stumble. After Saturday, the schedule isnt exactly challenging until two games in six days in mid-November against Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina. Its been great focus all week, Gill said. Im not saying its been a whole lot of rah-rah stuff, but paying attention to detail and a lot of great communication from teammate to teammate. When I see that, that tells me theyre focused and ready to go.As of Friday morning, Gill was still silent in naming a starting quarterback. Neither of his options have played well thus far. Junior Stephon Masha has thrown six interceptions in just 60 pass attempts, giving him an interception percentage thats the second highest in all of Division I. And though hes completed only 51.7 percent of his throws, thats 1.7 percent better than freshman Stephen Calvert, who saw his most extensive action yet in last Saturdays 29-14 loss to SMU.The Flames will need whichever signal caller is taking snaps to succeed through the air, because theyll likely find space hard to come by on the ground. LSU had success rushing against Jacksonville State, but Coastal Carolina gained just 42 yards on 35 carries.Theres no uncertainty under center for the Gamecocks (2-1). Eli Jenkins paved the way to the title game last season and despite a dip in accuracy through three games, hes still the driving force in an offense thats cracked 500 total yards against both of its non-FBS opponents.(Jenkins), in my mind, is no question one of the top players in the country, Gill said. There are four wins over FCS top-10 foes on Gills resume since arriving at Liberty in 2012 -- the Flames knocked off both Montana and Coastal in Lynchburg last season -- but theres a reason Jacksonville State heads north as a 9 1/2-point favorite in this one. The Gamecocks have lost only three regular-season games since Grass took over in 2014 -- to Michigan State, Auburn and LSU. Cheap Jordan 1 Retro All Black . Now, with Game 6 set for Fenway Park and an 8:07 p.m. ET first pitch, the Detroit Tigers face the unenviable task of having to beat the Boston Red Sox twice, on the road, to advance to the World Series. . But Bourque, who has missed three games with a lower-body injury, wont be in the lineup when the Habs travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres on Wednesday. PITTSBURGH -- Dan Bylsma couldnt avoid speculation about his status as the Penguins coach in the days following Pittsburghs four-game pratfall against Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals, even in his own house. Shortly after the Bruins swept the Stanley Cup favourites out of the playoffs last week, Bylsmas son Bryan asked his dad if he still had a job. "I would be lying to say that I was able to block all that stuff out," Bylsma said. Now he wont have to. The Penguins signed the second-winningest coach in franchise history to a two-year extension through 2016 on Wednesday, a very public vote of confidence after Pittsburghs quest for a Stanley Cup to bookend the one it captured in 2009 ended with four miserable losses to the Bruins. "I have a very good coach moving forward that I want to lead this team," general manager Ray Shero said. "I want to reward him with an extension that shows him and shows people that hes my coach and I believe in him." Its a belief Shero stressed was not shaken despite a fourth straight spring without a Cup for one of the NHLs most talented teams. Assistants Tony Granato and Todd Reirden will also be retained after the Penguins decided it wasnt time to change course following a regular season in which the Penguins posted the second-best record in the league. Shero, who met with owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle earlier this week, was prepared to go to bat for Bylsma, who is 201-92-25 since taking over for Michel Therrien in February, 2009. Turns out, Shero didnt have to step up after Lemieux and Burkle told him they were fully on board with keeping Bylsma in the fold. "They were 100 per cent supportive," Shero said. Even if the Penguins are just 3-4 in post-season series since captain Sidney Crosby raised the Cup after beating Detroit in Game 7 of the 2009 finals. Pittsburgh has fallen to a lower-seeded team each time, though the fourth-seeded Bruins hardly qualified as a major underdog. Boston didnt play like one, never trailing as the Penguins were swept for the first time in 34 years. Most galling was a 6-1 defeat at home in Game 2 that changed the tenor of the series. Pittsburgh regrouped and played well in a double-overtime loss in Game 3 and a 1-0 loss in Game 4, pretty clear evidence Bylsma had not lost the dressing room. He certainly didnt lose Shero. "We did some very good things over the course of the season," Shero said. "We won the Atlantic Divisioon championship. D.J. Augustin Jersey. We won 15 straight games that put us in position to have home-ice (advantage)." Those accomplishments and Bylsmas solid relationship with stars Crosby and Evgeni Malkin proved more powerful than the sting of disappointment. Malkin is entering the final year of his contract and the Penguins are intent on keeping him. Having the coach who helped turn Malkin into the league MVP a year ago certainly wont hurt. Shero understands the lure of blowing things up. It happens frequently in Pittsburgh. Bylsmas 319-game run is the longest since the franchise was founded in 1967. Bringing in a new face didnt make sense to Shero, who pointed to the stability of franchises like the Detroit Red Wings as the key to being a consistent Cup contender. Besides, while the new deal brings a sense of momentary calm, it hardly assures a sense of long-term security. Therrien was fired halfway through the 2008-09 season even though he signed a three-year extension a few months earlier. Shero also cautioned the deal doesnt absolve Bylsma or the players of what happened against the Bruins. It also doesnt mean the window for this group has closed. "Weve been to the conference finals three times in the last six years," Shero said. "We want a Cup. We want to get back there." Bylsma in particular. He called the extension "important" and in some ways a relief. He traded texts with his brothers assuring them he was "OK" after the loss to the Bruins. Now he can head into the off-season trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. His first order will be finding a new goaltending coach. Longtime goaltending coach Gille Meloche will move into a scouting role and whoever inherits his position will have to find a way to restore the confidence of Marc-Andre Fleury. The former No. 1 pick imploded in the opening round against the New York Islanders and lost his job to Tomas Vokoun. Bylsma and Shero insist the 28-year-old Fleury remains a part of the teams future.
