NEW YORK (AP) — Yes, that really happened.
Sam Darnold sparkled in his NFL debut — after a disastrous first throw, of course — and the New York Jets dominated on offense, defense and special teams for a stunningly complete 48-17 victory over Detroit in their season opener Monday night.
And, just like that Chuck Howley Jersey , hopes have been raised just one week into the season. Well, everywhere outside the Jets’ facility, that is.
“Our expectations were like that before the game,” coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday. “So, it doesn’t change any. We had high expectations to begin with. That game changes nothing for us. It was just one game. We’ve got 15 more to go. We’re going to try to win them different ways. Obviously, every week won’t be the same, but our expectations haven’t changed.”
Just a few days before the game, Bowles made the matter-of-fact statement that he’s not here to collect a check or go 8-8, which would be a solid improvement on the 5-11 marks the Jets have had the past two years. He said he’s here to try to lead this franchise to a Super Bowl.
Sure, that seems like a stretch right now, but his players might be right there with him on that gameplan.
They saw what they can accomplish when everything is clicking and what they can be if they can come close to replicating what went on in Detroit.
“I know what we’re capable of doing and even that wasn’t our best game,” wide receiver Quincy Enunwa said after the win. “So Geron Christian Jersey , I think that going forward we’re going to go ahead and fix the corrections and we’re going to play better every game, that’s our goal.”
Next up is the home opener against AFC East-rival Miami, and a chance to open the season 2-0 for the first time since Bowles’ first year as coach in 2015.
New York will have a short week after that with a Thursday night game at Cleveland. Three games in 11 games — with some fans on social media and sports radio already thinking about the Jets opening 3-0 since Rex Ryan’s first season as coach in 2009.
“The Culture has CHANGED!!” safety Jamal Adams tweeted shortly after the win . “I’ve been telling y’all… the Jets are DIFFERENT this year. This is just the beginning!”
Both Adams, who had the first interception of his career, and linebacker Darron Lee, who picked off his first two passes, said they knew what the Lions were doing on just about every play as New York finished with five interceptions of Matthew Stafford.
Bowles said Tuesday that it was simply a product of preparation.
“No, we didn’t know any audibles,” the coach said. “We didn’t know any plays. I think those guys did a good job of following the assignments that the coaches taught them. And they were anticipating certain things. They have certain formations and they were in the right position and good position to make those types of plays.”
Either way, it certainly worked.
It helped that Darnold bounced back from a brutal beginning in which the first throw of his NFL career was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Quandre Diggs.
Rather than get rattled, the youngest quarterback to start a season opener in the Super Bowl era played with the poise of a veteran.
The 21-year-old Darnold finished 16 of 21 for 198 yards and touchdowns to Robby Anderson and Enunwa.
“I thought he played well after the first play,” Bowles said. “He did some good things. We had some problems with the headset Brandon Scherff Jersey , so we had to call timeout a few times, but that was no fault of his. We just had some headset issues where they weren’t working where he could hear the play, but I thought he handled himself well.”
The coaches and players have raved about Darnold’s maturity and football smarts from the day he started practicing with them in May after being the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
Those very attributes were on display in front of a prime-time audience on Monday night.
“He’s the same guy every day,” Bowles said of Darnold. “I think that’s important at the quarterback position for you to be the same guy. You know what you’re getting out of the guy and you trust that type of person when you’re the same guy every day, and that’s really been the most impressive thing.”
Bowles has both played and coached in the NFL for the better part of the past 30 years and come across lots of young players during that time.
The coach senses something simply different about Darnold because of that even-keeled focus already.
“It’s great to see,” Bowles said. “It’s rare more nowadays. It was a little more common back then (when Bowles played) for whatever reason, but it’s a little more rare than what I’ve been around and it’s exciting to see because he’s got an old soul. He’s young in age but understands the game very well. He works at it the right way.”

Ryan Tannehill fielded questions on Twitter this week Leonard Floyd Jersey , with followers asking about his fresh-water fishing preference (open face reel), whether he could play receiver in the NFL (no way), and what kept him going when he missed all of last season (faith, family, friends and teammates).
The social media audience was too polite to ask the question on the mind of every Miami Dolphins fan: When will Tannehill win a postseason game, or at least play in one?
He doesn't know the answer anyway. But with his first game in 21 months looming Sunday, the 30-year-old quarterback begins a season more optimistic than ever.
"I feel more ready for this year than I've ever felt before," Tannehill said Wednesday. "I feel more confident, I would say, in the guys that we have and the path that we're on. Are we there yet? No. But the standards that we have established in training camp and throughout the offseason, how guys come to work each day pushing to get better, that's what excites me more than I've ever been."
Tannehill said he has never been so confident in his offensive line. He likes his team's depth at the skill positions, including veteran newcomers Frank Gore, Danny Amendola and Albert Wilson, and rookie tight end Mike Gesicki. And he's increasingly comfortable with the offensive system under third-year coach Adam Gase.
"I feel more confident in fully playing the position than I ever have, and everything it entails http://www.dallascowboysteamonline.com/taco-charlton-jersey ," Tannehill said. "It might not be every play you see it, but I know when certain situations come up, I'm going to be quicker to react and make the right decision and not have to think about it."
Teammates praise Tannehill's mastery of the offense.
"Seeing how prepared and comfortable he is, it's contagious for the other guys," Gesicki said.
But can Tannehill win? His career record is 37-40. He became the Dolphins' starter as a rookie in 2012, and their only playoff berth since then was in 2016, when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 14.
Tannehill re-injured his left knee in training camp last year, wiping out his 2017 season. He says he's now 100 percent, and looked it during the exhibition season.
"He has taken hold of this offense, and he has made it his own," Gase said.
The Dolphins went 6-10 without Tannehill last year, and prognosticators say they'll have a losing season with him. But doubters may forget how well Tannehill was playing when he first hurt his knee.
In his final eight games of 2016 鈥?his most recent games 鈥?he had a passer rating of 100.1, and the Dolphins went 7-1. While he says he's a better quarterback now, Gase agrees.
"I love working with him," Gase said. "I love how he does everything from the time he gets in the building until the time he leaves. He really has shown me a lot, especially on the practice field Mitch Unrein Jersey , with how intense he is and how he treats every day like a game."
As the biggest star on a team under the radar, Tannehill has embraced a leadership role more than ever, and raised his profile off the field, such as with the Twitter Q&A.
"I'm just trying to engage a little bit more with fans and give them a little window into my life," he said.
That includes his wife, Lauren, and their 2-year-old son, Steel. One Twitter video Tannehill posted this week features Steel showing off his throwing arm by lobbing a rock a few feet in the backyard.
"Obviously we have a little work to do," dad says on the video.
"It was actually a good throw," he confessed with a laugh Wednesday. "Lauren is like, 'He actually made a good throw. Why did you have to trash him like that?' I'm like, 'I guess for the price of comedy, right?'"
Tannehill laughed again. When it comes to grading the throwing arms in his family, things don't get serious until Sunday.
Shortly after winning her 40th career World Cup race on Sunday, overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin drew praise from one of her main rivals for ”taking the sport to another level.”
Beaten by 1.64 seconds in a slalom on the Podkoren course, Frida Hansdotter had mixed feelings about the American’s dominance.
”It’s frustrating Ziggy Hood Jersey , but it is also good for the sport,” said the Swede, the only skier other than Shiffrin to win the season-long World Cup slalom title in the past five years.
Shiffrin has won 20 of the last 25 slaloms she competed in, and finished on the podium in four of the other five races. Her 29 slalom wins in total leaves her six short of the record set by Austria’s Marlies Schild.
”She is super fast,” Hansdotter said. ”All of us want to ski faster than her but she is on another level. We need to train harder and ski faster.”
The Olympic slalom champion certainly was fast while taking a 1.47-second lead in Sunday’s opening leg, which Shiffrin called ”maybe the best run of slalom I have ever done in a race.”
It was the fourth straight slalom race where Shiffrin held a first-run lead of more than a second, a huge margin in a sport often decided by hundredths of a second.
”I let it go down the hill and I am really, really happy with my skiing that run,” said Shiffrin, who also triumphed in Saturday’s giant slalom on the same course. ”I am always looking to do the skiing that I do in training. That feels really good, it’s confident, it’s flowing. The surface is incredible and froze overnight so it’s just so much fun to ski.”
Shiffrin posted the third-fastest time in the final leg and beat Hansdotter once again, while Wendy Holdener was 1.87 behind in third for the Swiss skier’s 13nd career slalom podium without winning – a World Cup record.
”Sometimes it’s frustrating but it is still a good fight,” Holdener said.
Petra Vlhova of Slovakia, the only skier to beat Shiffrin in a slalom this season, was 2.18 behind in fourth.
The result put the American level with Sweden great Ingemar Stenmark for the number of World Cup victories before turning 23.
Only Annemarie Moser-Proell won more races (41) at that age http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/clay-matthews-jersey , and Shiffrin can match the Austrian great’s record at a night slalom in Flachau on Tuesday.
”I have so much fun skiing today,” said Shiffrin, who has won seven of the last eight races, including all four in 2018. ”I feel so like in a good place, it doesn’t feel like I am dreaming, it doesn’t feel like it’s something crazy that’s happening. It just feels like I am skiing really well and I am starting to feel that in the races more and more.”
Her two wins this weekend easily earned Shiffrin the Golden Fox Trophy, which adds the slalom results to those of Saturday’s GS.
It was another confirmation that Shiffrin, initially excelling in slalom, has become a consistent winner in both technical disciplines.
”That’s huge, that has been one of my goals since forever,” Shiffrin said. ”So it’s so cool now that I can be a contender for the win in both slalom and GS.”
Shiffrin’s triumphant run has seen her lead in the overall standings increase to 721 points over second-place Holdener, while she leads Vlhova in the slalom standings by 235 points.
Not that she will take anything for granted because, as Shiffrin said, ”there are quite a few who have the ability to win. It’s still competition.”

The San Francisco 49ers have signed offensive lineman Laken Tomlinson to a three-year contract extension through the 2021 season.
The 6-foot-3 http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/dion-sims-jersey , 315-pound Tomlinson started 15 games for the 49ers at left guard last season.
He was acquired from the Lions last summer. Detroit made Tomlinson the 28th overall selection in the 2015 draft. In all, he has appeared in 47 NFL games.
”Laken is a very talented player who has improved consistently since joining the team one week before last year’s season opener,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said. ”This offseason, his hard work and dedication paid off as he continued to progress and performed at a high level. We were confident we could work out a contract extension with Laken and we are fired up to get that done before training camp.”
The 26-year-old Tomlinson was a 2014 All-America lineman at Duke.
A year ago at this time, the Los Angeles Chargers‘ lives were still unsettled amid the upheaval of their franchise relocation season. Some were still looking for houses, and others needed to get kids into school.
When Philip Rivers and his teammates reported to the same sunny spot Saturday for the first practice their second training camp in Orange County, pretty much everyone was feeling perfectly at home.
”Now it’s just football Dexter Manley Jersey ,” Rivers said. ”There’s not as much wondering about schedules and what the practice field was going to be like. There’s not as much of that uncertainty. It’s all football now. There’s definitely a level of comfort that I think we have now and we can just put our focus on the field.”
A year after leaving San Diego, the Chargers are eager to take another shot at living up to their enormous potential. Although they already lost two key players to injuries before training camp even began, the Bolts are aware they’re still a popular pick to be a playoff team and likely even a Super Bowl contender.
Those are nothing less than the Chargers’ own internal expectations, and they’re much more interested in proving themselves right.
”We just want to be the team we know we can be,” running back Melvin Gordon said. ”Yeah, expectations are high, but we make them higher than other people make them.”
The 36-year-old Rivers has started every game for the Chargers since 2006 DeShone Kizer Jersey , and he realizes he has fewer and fewer shots at reaching his first Super Bowl. He won the AFC West and appeared in playoff games during each of his first four seasons as a starter, but the Bolts have made the playoffs just once since that run ended in 2009.
Rivers understands the excitement around the Chargers after their 9-3 finish to last season. He even welcomes it.
”It’s interesting, because it’s been a while,” Rivers said. ”I’ve been on some teams here that had those expectations, and we went out and did it year after year there for a while. It’s been a long time, though. There aren’t many guys that have been through that on this team. … We know there are a lot of expectations outside. We have those same expectations on the inside.”
The Chargers return with remarkable continuity from last season’s team, with veteran center Mike Pouncey joining a largely unchanged offense and rookie safety Derwin James moving into a solid defense. Their biggest personnel losses happened recently Charles Mann Jersey , and did nothing to shake the Chargers’ reputation for soul-crushing injury problems: tight end Hunter Henry was lost for the season in May, and former Pro Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett tore his Achilles tendon Friday in a conditioning test.
The coaching staff also stayed essentially intact, with second-year head coach Anthony Lynn keeping coordinators Ken Whisenhunt and Gus Bradley. Lynn said he feels more confident as a head coach after getting through his first year in good form – and even finishing up his college degree along the way.
”I definitely feel a little bit more comfortable knowing what to expect, not moving and not living out of boxes, knowing where we’re going to training camp, and (having a) similar coaching staff and players,” Lynn said.
Although the stands at Jack Hammett Sports Complex were filled with an estimated 7 Nick Kwiatkoski Jersey ,000 fans for the first practice, the Chargers realize they’ve still got plenty of work to do if they hope to win over the Los Angeles marketplace in the coming years – particularly with the Los Angeles Rams looking like a potential Super Bowl team as well. Fielding a winning team this fall would be the most potent way to do it, the Bolts players and coaches agree.
But after four consecutive non-playoff seasons, and after the challenges of their relocation year, the Chargers are grateful to settle in for a few weeks of training camp with their thoughts on nothing bigger than the next practice or scrimmage.
Rivers even had a catchphrase for it: ”Enjoy the boring.”

Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold got a nice review of his work from one of the team’s older players at the position on Tuesday and it was offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates’ chance to talk about the third overall pick’s progress.
The word was once again positive. Bates said that Watching Darnold “execute football on the practice field is pretty exciting” and that the rookie has “been able to handle” everything the team has thrown his way since the draft in April. He also made it clear that they’ve been throwing everything they can in his direction.
“Are we giving him bits and pieces of the offense or are we throwing everything at him? We鈥檙e throwing everything at him Ryan Kelly Jersey ,” Bates said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. 鈥淚f he can handle it Jeremiah George Jersey , if he can prove that he鈥檚 the starter, then that will take place when the time comes.”
However much Bates and company have come up with the last couple of months Cody Parkey Jersey , there’s only so much a team can throw at a quarterback in OTAs and minicamp before the lack of contact and opposition forces them to a ceiling.
Before any serious thought can be given to Darnold starting a game in the regular season, he’ll have to show he can handle what other teams are throwing at him in the preseason. The Jets kick off that portion of their schedule on August 10 against the Falcons.
The Seattle Seahawks are retaining one of their key defensive backs by signing safety Bradley McDougald to a three-year contract.
Bringing back McDougald was important for the Seahawks after he showed his value last season with his ability to fill in at both strong safety and free safety. McDougald was able to fill in for Earl Thomas when he was injured and took over for Kam Chancellor after he was lost for the season to a neck injury.
McDougald was set to become a free agent after playing last season on a one-year deal. NFL reported McDougald's new deal is worth up to nearly $14 million. McDougald finished the 2017 season with 67 tackles and four passes defensed.
Seattle also released defensive back DeShawn Shead Gale Sayers Jersey , making him an unrestricted free agent. Seattle wants to bring Shead back.
He spent most of last season on the physically unable to perform list due to a knee injury and Seattle could have brought him back under the terms of that contract. But now that Shead is healthy, the Seahawks afforded him the chance to see his value on the open market.

KANSAS CITY Ryan Kerrigan Jersey , Mo. (AP) — It is already being called “The Pass” in Kansas City.
It happened early in the Chiefs’ game against the Atlanta Falcons, when Patrick Mahomes II dropped back to throw. The pocket began to collapse around him, so Mahomes took a couple jitterbug steps forward and let loose with a 69-yard heave that Tyreek Hill caught nearly in stride for a touchdown.
The ball traveled almost the entire distance in the air.
Immediately, the pass began trending on social media. Four days later, it was still being discussed on local sports talk radio. It had turned into memes blazing trails across the internet.
Just imagine if it had happened in a game that counts!
“I underthrew it, to be honest,” Mahomes said with a wry smile. “Tyreek outran it. If you have guys like that, that much speed, you just try to get them the ball and make plays.”
Yet there are few quarterbacks in the NFL capable of making that particular play.
It takes the kind of arm strength few possess, and the kind of vision to spot a streaking wide receiver 50-odd yards downfield. It takes the confidence to step up in a pocket rapidly filling with big, bruising bodies, and the discipline to deliver the pass while taking a hit.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid was asked Tuesday whether he could remember any similar throws, and only two came to mind. The first involved then-Packers quarterback Brett Favre http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/aaron-rodgers-jersey , with whom Mahomes has drawn plenty of comparisons, and a long touchdown toss to Sterling Sharpe against Detroit. The second involved the Eagles’ Donovan McNabb, who hit DeSean Jackson in a Monday night game against Dallas.
Maybe that one came to mind because Jackson dropped the ball in celebration before crossing the goal line, nullifying the touchdown. Then again, maybe it was the sheer audacity of the throw.
“Not everyone,” Reid said, “can do the long ones.”
Nor do their big arms always translate to big success.
JaMarcus Russell had otherworldly arm strength when he was drafted by Oakland, but he was never able to harness it in the NFL. Another ex-Raiders quarterback, Jeff George, had a massive arm but only made two playoff appearances. Jim Hart parlayed his cannon into a long career with the Cardinals, but he never managed to win a playoff start, in part because of a weak supporting cast.
More often than not, though Antonio Morrison Jersey , arm strength has been a key ingredient to some of the most productive passers in recent history, especially as the NFL has become a quarterback-centric league.
Favre, John Elway and Dan Marino, and more recently Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers, have all possessed the kind of arm it takes to fling the ball downfield as pockets are collapsing.
Hill, who is near-universally recognized as the NFL’s fastest player, said that “Pat is the first guy that I’ve played with that has the arm strength” to hit him in stride. “That’s not taking anything away from other quarterbacks I’ve played with,” he added, “but Pat is something special.”
The challenge now? Make sure those meme-inducing throws are long, impressive touchdown passes, not the kind of ugly interception that Mahomes threw earlier against the Falcons.
“That’s kind of the transition of getting into Pat’s mind,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce explained, “and be there play-specific where he needs us to be Nick Kwiatkoski Jersey , or where he needs to throw the ball.
“And on those deep passes, man, just keep running.”
One thing Reid and new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy have been stressing to Mahomes is to avoid making the same mistake twice. It could be failing to recognize a coverage scheme or identify a blitz package, or even delivering a throw to the wrong part of the field in a certain situation.
“He’s a young guy. He’s seeing things for the first time,” Reid said. “It’s important that when you see it again you don’t make the same mistake. That’s where it can be a problem.”
Perhaps that’s why Mahomes was more jazzed about a third-and-11 completion to Kelce that kept the chains moving than his long touchdown pass to Hill. It was a similar throw to one he’d missed earlier in the preseason, and it was evidence that he had learned his lesson.
“It was a harder throw and a little better spiral, too,” he said, again smiling. “I mean, for me it’s just about being efficient and scoring touchdowns to win games. You can have a big arm and that can help you out in games, but you need to be able to move the ball, convert on third down and score.”
NOTES: The Chiefs released RB Charcandrick West on Wednesday. … ILB Reggie Ragland (knee) hopes to make his preseason debut Saturday in Chicago. “That’s the plan right now,” he said. “We’re going to take it day by day Josh Jones Jersey , but hopefully I’ll be ready.” … SS Eric Berry (heel), OG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (concussion), DT Allen Bailey (knee) and CB Steven Nelson (concussion) were held out of practice Wednesday.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed four players who took part in their rookie minicamp, including wide receiver Chad Beebe, the son of former Buffalo Bills wideout and folk hero Don Beebe.
Beebe led Northern Illinois last season with an average of 14.9 yards per reception. His father was a wide receiver and special teams player on all four of Buffalo’s Super Bowl teams .
The Vikings also signed cornerback Craig James (Southern Illinois), fullback Johnny Stanton (UNLV) and linebacker Brett Taylor (Western Illinois) from their camp last weekend.
Long snapper Nick Dooley, wide receiver Armanti Foreman, defensive tackle Caushaud Lyons and fullback Kamryn Pettway were waived Monday by the Vikings to make room on the 90-man roster. Foreman and Pettway were signed a week ago as undrafted free agents.

Starters for both teams were long gone before the Detroit Lions rallied for their first preseason victory under coach Matt Patricia Quenton Nelson Jersey , leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a loss that didn't feel like a loss.
"They keep score, so you want to win the game," Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. "But our first two groups played well. ... We've just got to finish the game a little better."
Brandon Powell scored on an 80-yard punt return and Jake Rudock threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lucas with 30 seconds remaining to give the Lions a 33-30 victory Friday night.
Detroit (1-2) rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit, after Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and regulars from both teams departed.
Theo Riddick scored on a 10-yard run and Matt Cassel threw a 3-yard TD pass to Bradley Marquez to begin the comeback.
Adam Humphries returned a missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown for Tampa Bay, which led 20-6 at halftime and extended the lead to three touchdowns early in the third quarter.
"I think our guys know we're making progress as a football team," said Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, who's encouraged by the way his offense has performed in the preseason. "We're executing at a pretty high level. ... That starts with the quarterbacks."
Ryan Fitzpatrick was sharp in what may have been his final tuneup for the regular season, which the Bucs will begin in two weeks without suspended quarterback Jameis Winston Josh Bellamy Jersey , who's banned three games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
Fitzpatrick, entering his 14th season, went 6 for 7 for 82 yards before he was replaced by Winston early in the second quarter. Winston also worked one quarter, throwing a 10-yard TD pass to Chris Godwin and finishing 6 of 10 for 60 yards with no interceptions.
Stafford played into the third quarter for the Lions, producing a pair of field goals in his most extensive work of the preseason. The 10th-year pro, who completed 9 of 18 passes for 113 yards, moved the Lions 69 yards in 10 plays to set up Matt Prater's 24-yard field goal. He put together a 13-play, 90-yard drive to produce another short field goal.
"I felt pretty good out there. I felt like I was seeing it well Marcedes Lewis Jersey ," Stafford said. "Obviously, every time I go play I want one or two back, and today was no different."
Humphries' field goal return came on Prater's 62-yard miss on the final play on the first half. He started up the middle of the field, cut to the right to avoid a potential tackler before turning back to his left and racing toward midfield, where he cut to his right again and into the clear.
"I knew it was going to be short and I knew there was an opportunity to return it.," Humphries said. "We actually repped that in practice about 2 1-2 weeks ago. So, I'm glad coach Koetter called a timeout and was able to get me in there, and the defense did a great job blocking for me."
Bucs third-string quarterback Ryan Griffin http://www.indianapoliscoltsteamonline.com/john-simon-jersey , who'll back up Fitzpatrick during Winston's suspension, threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Martino in the third quarter. The fifth-year pro who's never taken a snap in a regular-season game finished 8 of 11 for 100 yards and no interceptions.
Cassel was seven of 11 for 60 yards for the Lions.
The start of the game was delayed 59 minutes because of lightning and heavy rain. Players left the field and fans were directed to seek cover in concourses, ramps and club seat dining areas at Raymond James Stadium about 40 minutes before the scheduled 8 p.m. kickoff. When the storm cleared, the teams returned to field for player introductions and a 20-minute warmup period before the national anthem.
Lions: TE Luke Willson (knee) left in the first half and did not return.
Buccaneers: They played without three starting offensive linemen 鈥擳 Donovan Smith, G Ali Marpet and G Caleb Benenoch 鈥?as well as starting DT Beau Allen and S Justin Evans. First-round draft pick DT Vita Vea, sidelined most of training camp with a calf injury, did not dress for the third straight game. LB Devante Bond (foot) and S Keith Tandy (hamstring) left during the first half and did not return.
Lions: Close the preseason at home against Cleveland next Thursday.
Buccaneers: Play final game before Winston's suspension begins, hosting Jacksonville on Thursday.
RICHMOND http://www.dallascowboysteamonline.com/allen-hurns-jersey , Va. (AP) The Washington Redskins have signed backup quarterback Colt McCoy to an extension that keeps him under contract through the 2019 season.
The team announced the deal Friday. NFL Network reported Thursday the contract could be worth up to $7 million.
McCoy is entering his fifth season with Washington, all under coach Jay Gruden, who called the 31-year-old a ”great player to have around.” Gruden says if anything happens to new quarterback Alex Smith, the team is in good hands with McCoy.
Drafted in the third round out of Texas by Cleveland in 2010, McCoy started 21 games for the Browns and appeared in three more. He started four games for the Redskins in 2014.
McCoy has thrown for 5,586 yards, 26 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 35 NFL games.

鈥淚 want to give them a full day to recover,鈥?Gruden said. 鈥淚 kind of have been doing a little research here and I think we practice in the morning, we are off the field around noon and they get a nice lunch. . . . So, I think to give that full time for recovery, so they can drink a lot of fluids and take care of their bodies is important.鈥?/p>
Most of their practices (9 of 15) will happen at 9:45 a.m. (which also helps keep them out of the heat and humidity), and those practices started at 3 p.m. last season.
Of course, there’s more than heat on Gruden’s mind. His team lost 309 player-games to injury http://www.washingtonredskinsteamonline.com/ryan-anderson-jersey , the sixth-highest total in the league. So anything he can do to reverse last year’s bad luck in the area, he’ll try.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — DeSean Jackson is eager to rebound from one of the least productive seasons of his career and help the Tampa Bay Buccaneers end a long playoff drought.
The Bucs struggled a year ago to incorporate the speedy receiver into an offense expected to be more potent after the three-time Pro Bowl selection was signed to a $33.5 million contract in free agency.
Jackson, 31, established himself as one of the league’s top deep threats over nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins.
He averaged a career-worst 13.4 yards per reception and scored just three touchdowns in his first year with Tampa Bay, which lost 10 of 13 following a 2-1 start to miss the playoffs for the 10th straight season.
The Cleveland Browns, who haven’t earned a playoff berth since 2002, are the only team with a longer playoff drought.
“Any time I get an opportunity to make good plays and spark this offense with explosive plays … or scoring touchdowns — whatever it is, I’m here to do (it),” Jackson said.
“Obviously last year was a disappointing year for myself and the team Matthias Farley Jersey ,” the receiver added. “I just want to be able to … give them high energy, good plays, and explosive plays.”
Jackson, who spent extra time in the offseason with Jameis Winston in hopes of improving chemistry between him and the quarterback on deep throws, enters his 11th season with 548 receptions for 9,487 yards and 49 TDs.
He’s also scored three touchdowns rushing and four more on punt returns.
“D-Jack is about 40 years old, but he’s still the fastest dude on our team,” defensive tackle Gerald McCoy joked. “It’s hard for guys to run with him.”
Nevertheless, the Bucs couldn’t get the ball to him consistently in 2017.
While Winston’s favorite target, Mike Evans Jordan Mills Jersey , continued to prosper with his fourth consecutive season with 1,000 yards receiving, Jackson finished with 50 catches for 668 yards — both lows for him in a year when he’s played at least 12 games.
And, for the first time since his rookie year with the Eagles in 2008, Jackson didn’t have a reception of at least 60 yards.
While he’s not making any bold predictions, the receiver is confident the offense will be better this fall.
“We have a lot of weapons and a lot of options for the quarterback to drop back and throw the ball to. I’m excited about that,” said Jackson, who has three receptions for 91 yards through two preseason games.
The veteran receiver thinks Tampa Bay has one of the best groups of targets in the league with himself, Evans, Chris Godwin Andre Reed Jersey , Adam Humphries and tight ends Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard.
He also likes offseason moves that included bolstering the offensive and defensive lines, as well as drafting running back Ronald Jones.
“We have a lot more competitive players now. A lot of new additions coming from winning mentalities. They’re able to push the drive and push other guys on this team to the highest of their potential,” Jackson said.
“Obviously last year was a frustrating year for everyone that’s a part of the Buccaneers. But there’s one common goal: to go out there, put the work in, and hopefully the results show on Sundays.”
Coach Dirk Koetter said Jackson is having an outstanding training camp.
“I think DeSean has really asserted himself not only as a veteran, but as a leader,” the coach said.
“DeSean has instant street cred because of his career. … It’s a big difference if you see a guy that you respect out there doing what he’s supposed to do versus a guy that’s out there moping around,” Koetter added. “Hats off to him, he’s doing a good job.”

Whether quarterback Andrew Luck actually throws behind them remains to be seen Josh Bellamy Jersey , but the Colts at least like the progress they’ve made putting together a new offensive line.
That was one of General Manager Chris Ballard’s priorities, and the first look at the line offers some reason to think there’s a better chance to protect Luck.
According to Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts were without left tackle Anthony Castonzo in OTAs (no reason was given), so they lined up聽Denzelle Good at left tackle, Quenton Nelson at left guard, Ryan Kelly at center, Matt Slauson at right guard and Austin Howard at right tackle.
That right side being made up of veteran acquisitions is no accident, and using the No. 6 overall pick on Nelson seemed designed to provide a toughness to the team as much as an individual player.
Slauson and Howard are also reliable veterans, which helps since the Colts have struggled up with young players front in recent years.
鈥淭here just needs to be a mental toughness and a leadership with guys who are all in and can mentally and physically do it play in and play out,鈥?coach Frank Reich said. 鈥淭hose guys have proven that over their career and they鈥檙e stepping up in their leadership role and really setting the tone for us, not only as an offensive line, but really as an offense in general.鈥?/p>
The Colts also used one of their second-rounders on guard Braden Smith http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/kevin-king-jersey , adding another high pick to the mix. It’s a promising start, and if their quarterback actually ever throws again, they should be improved.
Andrew Luck keeps checking off the boxes.
On Saturday, he got the Indianapolis Colts' offense in sync, bounced back from yet another big hit and led them to a go-ahead touchdown before leaving in the second quarter.
Yes, five days after a mediocre performance in his first home start in more than 19 months, Luck looked much sharper as the Colts hung on for a 23-17 victory over San Francisco.
"I really wanted to feel like we created some type of rhythm and we did," he said. "We put a sustained drive together, and the other ones, we made some mistakes. But getting in rhythm was something I really wanted to see."
He was in good company.
Coach Frank Reich and Colts fans also wanted to see improvement in what's likely Luck's final action of the preseason.
The results were better.
Luck scrambled for a 15-yard run on third-and-13 then threw a 15-yard TD pass to a leaping Eric Ebron on the next play to give Indy a 7-3 lead midway with 8:47 left in the first half. He finished 8 of 10 with 90 yards and took one sack.
Christine Michael's 1-yard TD plunge late in the third quarter made it 14-9, a lead Indy never relinquished.
Otherwise, it was a tough day for the Colts Joe Looney Jersey , who struggled to establish the run 鈥?and couldn't stop San Francisco's physical ground game in the first half.
"They did a nice job running the ball and just like offensively in the run game, we need to improve defensively in the run game," Reich said after his defense allowed 126 yards rushing.
Somehow, the Colts kept the 49ers out of the end zone until the final minutes and took advantage of Jacoby Brissett's 53-yard pass play to Seantavius Jones late in the third quarter. Two plays later, Michael scored to give Indy a 14-9 lead.
It was enough to give Luck his first home win since Jan. 1, 2017.
Jimmy Garoppolo, meanwhile, couldn't get the ball into the end zone. He was 9 of 19 for 135 yards, leading the 49ers to only two field goals before departing in the third quarter. Alfred Morris carried 17 times for 84 yards, doing the bulk of his work in the first half.
Former Colts receiver Pierre Garcon had two catches for 62 yards.
"We ran the ball very well, but I was just saying this to the team 鈥?running the ball well doesn't (automatically) get you points," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "We were 0 for 3 in the red zone."
Robbie Gould's 32-yard field goal gave the 49ers a 9-7 lead late in the third quarter.
But all San Francisco could manage the rest of the game was Nick Mullens' 1-yard TD run and Jeremy McNichols' 2-point conversion run with 4:07 left http://www.dallascowboysteamonline.com/connor-williams-jersey , spoiling the return of cornerback Richard Sherman .
"There were some good plays, there were some other plays I felt rusty on, but overall I felt pretty good," said Sherman, who is coming back from a torn Achilles tendon. "I would have preferred (defending a deep ball)."
Ebron caught five passes for 54 yards for Indy, which got starting safety Malik Hooker back. He missed the second half of his rookie season after tearing two ligaments in his right knee.
When the 49ers visited Indianapolis in October, nearly two dozen players demonstrated by kneeling during the national anthem 鈥?prompting Vice President Mike Pence to walk out of Lucas Oil Stadium. This time, nobody took a knee while the anthem played. The only demonstration came from San Francisco receiver Marquise Goodwin, who raised his fist again.
49ers: Linebacker Reuben Foster did not return after being diagnosed with a concussion in the third quarter, and cornerback Jimmie Ward left in the first half with a quadriceps injury. Shanahan said he doesn't expect to Foster in the preseason finale. Receiver Marquise Goodwin also left in the first half with a hand injury but returned. San Francisco played without running backs Jerick McKinnon (knee), Matt Breida (shoulder) and Joe Williams (ribs) or backup offensive linemen Erik Magnuson (hamstring) and Gary Gilliam.
Colts: Defensive end John Simon (neck), safety Ronald Martin (shoulder) http://www.buffalobillsteamonline.com/corey-bojorquez-jersey , offensive lineman Denzelle Good (knee) and safety T.J. Green (hamstring) all left in the second half. None of those four retuned. Indy was already missing cornerbacks Quincy Wilson (hand) and Nate Hairston (hamstring), linebacker Anthony Walker (groin), defensive linemen Denico Autry (lower leg) and Tyquan Lewis (foot), running backs Marlon Mack (hamstring), Robert Turbin (ankle), newly acquired back Brandon Oliver and Tion Green, and receivers James Wright (knee) and K.J. Brent (knee).
49ers: Wrap up the preseason at home Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Colts: Close out the preseason at Cincinnati.

With sports betting now legal in New Jersey Joe Theismann Jersey , and even with football season still more than two months away, bets can be placed on one important NFL proposition: Who will win the Super Bowl?
Accompanying an article from Connor Orr of SI.com is a photo of the betting board at Monmouth Park, revealing some of the odds to win the 53rd installment of the game.
The Browns are only 75-1 underdogs to win it all. Making that number even more amazing is the fact that the Bengals are at 125-1.
Other teams deemed by oddsmakers to be less likely to win it all than the Browns include the Bills (100-1), the Dolphins (100-1) Dan Hampton Jersey , the Buccaneers (100-1), the Colts (100-1), the Jets (100-1), the Cardinals (100-1) Chester Rogers Jersey , and Washington (100-1).
The Bears also have 75-1 odds.
Then there’s this: The Seahawks, one of the best teams of the past six years, have 50-1 odds. While the Seahawks are hardly favorites to win it all, they seem like a MUCH better bet to climb the mountain than a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2002 — and that has won only one game in the past two seasons.
Broncos linebacker Von Miller is potentially in hot water after a social media post in which he poses with a bloody hammerhead shark that was caught on a fishing expedition.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has received the images and video from the trip and is "looking into whether or not a violation occurred in this incident Eddie Goldman Jersey ," said Carol Lyn Parrish, the commission's public information coordinator. No further details were available.
There's video of the group trying to put the shark back in the water. The harvesting of hammerhead sharks is a second-degree misdemeanor in Florida. It's punishable by up to a $500 fine and 60 days in jail, as determined by a judge.
Miller's agent couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday on the investigation.

The Atlanta Falcons have added depth at cornerback and a three-time Pro Bowl player on special teams by signing Justin Bethel Kyle Long Jersey , who played his first six seasons with Arizona.
The 27-year-old Bethel joins guard Brandon Fusco and tight end Logan Paulsen as Atlanta's top free-agent additions. The Falcons have focused on re-signing their own players while hoping to work out an extension for quarterback Matt Ryan, who can be a free agent after the 2018 season.
Bethel had a combined four interceptions the past three seasons with the Cardinals and returned three for touchdowns.
Bethel has avoided serious injuries with Arizona, playing in all 16 games in each of his six seasons.
LOS ANGELES — With the help of an unlikely ally, the Los Angeles Kings will be celebrating a return to the postseason when they face the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night at Staples Center.
The Kings (44-28-8) qualified for the postseason on Wednesday night with the St. Louis Blues’ 4-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Los Angeles returned to the postseason in coach John Stevens’ initial season behind the bench. Stevens replaced Darryl Sutter after the Kings sputtered to a 10th-place finish in the 2016-17 season and combined with new general manager Rob Blake to pivot the team into a more up-tempo, offensive-minded team while not forgetting their defensive roots. The result was a double-digit standings point improvement and a slight chance to gain home-ice advantage if the Kings win their remaining two games and the San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks lose in either of their last two matches.
Los Angeles is battling through significant injuries among its defensive corps that could place two rookies into the lineup on Thursday. Jake Muzzin and Derek Forbort are sidelined with injuries that have them categorized as ‘week-to-week’ by Stevens. Forbort suffered a lower-body injury early in the first period against Colorado, forcing Stevens to utilize Alec Martinez for 32:11 of game play. Paul LaDue stepped in to play 16:32 Chase Roullier Jersey , and fellow rookie Kevin Gravel looks to round out the third defensive pair.
Along the forward wall, winger Alex Iafallo, a fixture on the Kings’ top line alongside Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown, will miss his third consecutive game with an upper-body injury.
“It’s been the next man up,” Stevens said. “It’s odd that there are that many defenseman injuries this time of the year. It’s the schedule, everybody wants to put pucks in deep and forecheck http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/aaron-rodgers-jersey , so the speed of the game — Minnesota’s lost a couple guys, just like we have.”
The Kings recorded victories in the two previous games between the teams this season, winning 5-2 on Dec. 5 in Los Angeles and getting a 4-3 overtime triumph on Mar. 19.
The Wild (44-26-10) clinched a playoff spot on Monday night and opened their three-game California road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night. Matt Dumba registered the Minnesota goal and Devan Dubnyk stopped 27 of 29 Anaheim shots.
Despite a loss in a game that was meaningless to their postseason aspirations, Wild coach Bruce Boudreau liked his team’s performance in a tight checking game that should be the brand of hockey they will face in the postseason.
“The first two periods we were really good,” Boudreau said. “The third period they definitely outworked us. It was a great test that this is what playoff hockey’s going to be like. The Ducks were in the third period a desperate hockey club. Maybe it’s a cheap lesson learned, hopefully.”
Their remaining two games will not affect their playoff seeding as they are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Central Division and will face either the Nashville Predators or the Winnipeg Jets. With both potential opponents among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup Anthony Walker Jersey , Boudreau welcomes the challenges they present.
“The great thing is, if you can beat either one of those teams, you can beat any team in the league because those are two of maybe the top three teams in the NHL,” Boudreau said.
Like Stevens, Boudreau must manage a team with significant injuries on the blue line with less than a week until the playoffs starts.
Ryan Suter, one of the top defenseman in the NHL Kevin Hogan Jersey , was lost for the season after suffering a fractured right ankle in a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Saturday night. Suter underwent surgery on Monday to repair the fracture.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The ball came floating down and James Washington appeared out of position. The back of the end zone was behind him. Green Bay defensive back Demetri Goodson was in front of him. The window Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Josh Dobbs had to fit the ball to the rookie wide receiver didn’t really exist.
So Washington created one.
The pass slightly underthrown Leonard Floyd Jersey , Washington reached over Goodson and plucked it out of the air for a 19-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The second-round pick did it again in the fourth period, outmuscling Packers cornerback Herb Waters for a 22-yard score to help Pittsburgh save a little bit of face in an otherwise drab preseason loss.
While some of Washington’s teammates erupted on the sideline after each acrobatic grab, one of them did not.
“It wasn’t a surprise to me at all, I had seen it for four years,” said rookie quarterback Mason Rudolph, who set records throwing the ball all over the field to Washington during their standout college careers at Oklahoma State. “All these guys kind of ‘ooohed’ and ‘ahhhed’ at it but … I think he’s just scratching the surface of what he can do.”
Washington hopes to take another step forward Saturday when he is expected to get some reps with the first team as the Steelers host Tennessee. The 22-year-old understands it will take time for him to develop a rapport with Ben Roethlisberger after spending so many years catching passes from Rudolph. Washington has tried to absorb as much as he can since the Steelers took him with the 60th overall pick in the draft. His route running remains a work in progress. His grasp of the offense remains in its infancy. Yet the signs he’s starting to get it are there. Now it’s time to show Roethlisberger he can do it when it counts.
“With Ben, you have to know the defense,” Washington said. “You have to be watching while running your routes. With me and Mason you know, we’re taught, ‘Ok the ball is supposed to go here, it’s supposed to go here.’ With Ben, he’s a Hall of Famer. He knows spots where he can sneak it in and throw you a back shoulder. You have to be ready with him.”
And defenses might be wise to be ready for Washington, who figures to be in the third wide receiver slot behind All-Pro Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster when the AFC North champions open the 2018 season in Cleveland on Sept. 9.
“He’s raw, but the kid can catch Anthony Castonzo Jersey ,” veteran wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey said. “He has a range that only a few people I’ve seen have. You throw it up, he’s got a great vertical, but it’s his ability to go get the ball that’s amazing.”
Having a frame Rudolph likened to a “bowling ball” helps. Washington is a thick 215 pounds, making it difficult for defensive backs to nudge him off his stride. It gets even harder when Washington unleashes his 39-inch vertical leap. The proof came during training camp at Saint Vincent College, when Washington found himself lining up across from two-time Pro Bowl defensive back Joe Haden.
Haden normally prefers to work against the starters during camp but couldn’t turn down a chance to face off against Washington.
“Once I see him making plays on other guys, it’s like ‘Let me see what you can do,'” Haden said. “In Latrobe he got me in the end zone. Jumped up and got his hands on the ball the whole time and I couldn’t get it. So he’s just making really good plays. I was like, ‘If you can make that on me, I think you’re going to be good.'”
Asked if Washington chirped at him after the grab, Haden just laughed.
“No, he never said a thing,” Haden said. “I’ve been around a lot of rookies that don’t act like that and aren’t as good (as he is).”
Talking has never really been Washington’s thing. Consider it a byproduct of having to play with older kids while growing up in Texas. At the park across the street from his parent’s house, Washington would find himself running around with cousins five or six years his senior. The only way to gain respect was to go out and earn it.
“I was always I guess pushed to an extent where I had to go hard,” Washington said.
He plays with an intensity that helped him win the Biletnikoff Award last year as the top wide receiver in college football. His quiet demeanor fits in well in a wide receiver’s room that includes the cerebral Heyward-Bey Ryan Kelly Jersey , the relentless Brown, and the ebullient Smith-Schuster. Washington is only too happy to be a sponge, absorbing what he can while proving he belongs.
“I think they’ve accepted my role and what I do,” Washington said. “We joke around every once in a while. Like I told him: Don’t expect me to be the guy yelling, just do my job.”
NOTES: The Steelers signed inside linebacker Vince Williams to a four-year contract on Thursday that will run through the 2021 season. Watt’s status won’t be certain until game time.
C.J. Anderson is leaving Denver with a million memories, a Super Bowl ring and no hard feelings.
"It's business, I understand it," Anderson told The Associated Press on Monday after he was released by the Denver Broncos. "I've been here five years and it came to an end. So, I'm excited for the next opportunity."
Where that is, "I don't know http://www.buffalobillsteamonline.com/ryan-groy-jersey ," Anderson said. "I have no clue at all."
Possible landing spots include Miami, where Dolphins coach Adam Gase offered him a four-year, $18 million deal in 2016 that Denver matched, and New England, where Patriots coach Bill Belichick is also a big fan.
Anderson hits free agency at an opportune time.
He's 27, has just 683 career carries and is coming off his best season, one in which he played in all 16 games for the first time and ran for a career-best 1,007 yards .
"I would never say it's a good time to be free," Anderson said. "All I ever tried to do was give my best effort to Denver in every way possible. I did that for five years. Now it's time to go and do that for another team."
Anderson wasn't one of the 23 running backs drafted in 2013 but the Cal alum has put up better career numbers than all of those running backs except for one: Steelers star Le'Veon Bell.
Anderson's resume includes a Pro Bowl, two dozen TDs, a pair of playoff touchdowns and numerous game-sealing runs, none bigger than his TD plunge that capped Denver's 24-10 win over Carolina in the Super Bowl three years ago.
Shortly afterward, Gase, who had been his offensive coordinator in Denver Larry Allen Jersey , offered him the big contract that Broncos GM John Elway ultimately matched.
The deal included a $5 million signing bonus and salaries of $675,000 in 2016, $2.9 million last year and $4.5 million in each of the next two years.
Because there was no dead cap money in 2018 or '19, Anderson knew his release was, if not imminent, a very strong possibility this offseason as the Broncos rebuild an anemic offense following a 5-11 season.
"I knew I could be released or traded at any time," Anderson said.
His release not only clears a combined $9 million off the books for Denver but it opens the way for Devontae Booker, De'Angelo Henderson or maybe even a pick in the upcoming draft to take over as the Broncos' featured back alongside new QB Case Keenum .
"I respect the decision whether it's a money issue or a play issue," Anderson said. "They feel like they can move on from me. I understand that. That's the beauty of our game. Now I get an opportunity to showcase my skills somewhere else."

Its another challenging week with six teams on a bye again, plus some other notable injuries to contend with. Cheap Geron Christian Jersey . Your lineup may look far from ideal this week, but the same holds true for others in your league. If you deftly worked the waiver wire and are well informed, you should be set up well during Week 9. But if you are still struggling to roll out an adequate fantasy crew, well get you in position to win as every victory now becomes magnified in terms of determining playoff positioning.FILLING IN FOR PATSThe Patriots are on a bye, which means you have to fill in for Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and LeGarrette Blount. At quarterback, you can consider Colin Kaepernick, who faces the Saints 28th-ranked pass defense and can at least give you adequate production because of his rushing potential. A good statistical result would be if he throws more than one TD pass or runs in a score. He is one of the best running quarterbacks in the league and anything he can additionally provide you with in the passing game in a friendly matchup will be a welcome bonus. Dak Prescott takes on a Browns team that has allowed an NFL-high 19 TD passes and Ryan Tannehill opposes the Jets, who have the leagues lowest-ranked pass defense.TIGHT END REPLACEMENTSIn addition to finding a sub for Gronkowski this week, fantasy owners may also have to replace Jordan Reed, Tyler Eifert and others at tight end. St. Louis Lance Kendricks is a quality one week play (or streamer) against a Panthers defense that allows 12.2 fantasy points per game to the position according to FantasyPros.com, second-most among all teams. The Browns allow 11.7 FFPG to tight ends, third-most in the league, and while Jason Witten is not the fantasy producer he used to be, consider plugging him in as well.RUNNING BACK UNCERTAINTYBlount is possibly the most dependable TD producer in the game right now, and David Johnson is widely regarded as the best RB overall in fantasy. There is also uncertainty about whether LeSean McCoy and Spencer Ware has been declared out. Many fantasy owners are digging deep for help at the position. Consider Seattles C.J. Prosise in point-per-reception formats, as he has big-play potential and can also be a safety target for Russell Wilson, who is hindered by injury. Tim Hightower saw more work last week and faces the 49ers, who have the leagues worst run defense by far. If you picked up Hightower, dont hesitate to use him. Miami has been vulnerable to RBs this year, so you can use Bilal Powell in PPR formats.WIDEOUTSSome top wide receivers on a bye include A.J. Green and Larry Fitzgerald. Very deep options include Torrey Smith, who could get a downfield shot or two to make some significant statistical contributions against New Orleans, and Kenny Stills against a Jets secondary that is very prone to giving up big plays. Kenny Britt opposes the Panthers, who have the worst pass defense in the NFC, and Darrius Heyward-Bey moves into the starting lineup against a Ravens defense that has allowed 14 TD passes.BIG BEN RETURNSBen Roethlisberger (knee) is expected to return this week, and should boost the outlook of those involved in the Steelers passing game. Fantasy owners will not need to worry about the production of Antonio Brown, and Sammie Coates can be returned to lineups as a third starting wide receiver. Tight end Ladarius Green is not quite ready to come back from an ankle injury, though, so expect Brown, Coates and Heyward-Bey to be the main receiving producers for Pittsburgh.CHARGERS INJURIESThe San Diego WR corps continues to deal with injuries, as Travis Benjamin has a sprained PCL and Tyrell Williams has a knee issue, but is expected to play. Look for Dontrelle Inman, a unique combination of size and downfield potential, to possibly see a larger role in the offense beginning this week. He may still be a free agent in some leagues.PHILLY RUNNERSThe running back situation in Philadelphia appears to be unclear. Darren Sproles is too small to carry a full load, but Ryan Mathews has been dealing with fumbling issues. Keep using Sproles as a flex player in a PPR league, because his pass-catching skills always make him relevant, but keep Mathews benched for now if you are not dealing with bye or injury issues. This situation could remain fluent.CARR VS. DENVERDerek Carr threw for a Raiders record 513 yards and four TDs in Week 8. His reward? A date with the leagues best pass defense this week as he takes on the rival Broncos. Denver tends to be more vulnerable to the run, so the Raiders may lean some more on their ground game and this could be a lower-scoring affair between familiar divisional rivals. Carr totaled 425 passing yards and two TDs in the two games prior to his explosion last week, so dont assume he is surefire starter based on momentum. He may not be a top 10 fantasy QB this week and it would not be crazy to use Kaepernick over him.---This column was provided to The Associated Press by the Fantasy Sports Network, http://FNTSY.com Cheap Troy Apke Jersey . OK then. Cheap Custom New York Rangers Jerseys . Now that weve got that little All-Star Game extravaganza out of the way, where were we? Oh, thats right. The Year of the Cubs was turning into the Can We Stop the Season in June, Please? The Ace of Diamonds rotation of those New York Mets was turning into a bone-spurs convention. And somehow or other, thanks to climate change or juiced baseballs or possibly even trick photography, more than 3,000 home runs had already fallen out of the sky, leaving a trail of souvenirs and wounded ERAs.So we cant wait to see where all this is leading. But first, its time to look back on what weve witnessed so far -- through the miracle of my annual midseason awards. They once again will not be presented by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Whoopi Goldberg, Murray and Beverly Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Paul Goldschmidt, Michael Jack Schmidt or David Hyde Pierce. In other words, Ill just have to hand the darned things out myself again. The envelopes, please!NL MVP of the half-yearClayton Kershaw, Los Angeles DodgersI have no idea how you define valuable. Probably different from how I do -- especially if youre one of those folks who is sure the only reason I didnt pick?Nolan Arenado, Kris Bryant or Matt Carpenter is because (repeat after me) Im biased, I hate your team, I have East Coast bias, I have West Coast bias, I know as much about baseball as a rhododendron, whatever. But you know how I define valuable, really? By reminding myself what the Dodgers are with Clayton Kershaw and without him. And that about settles it. When Kershaw pitches, the Dodgers have roughly the same winning percentage (.875) as the Golden State Warriors. And when anyone else pitches, they have roughly the same winning percentage (.493) as the Buffalo Sabres. So -- any more questions? Now throw in Kershaws 1.79 ERA, the greatest strikeout/walk ratio (145/9) in the history of the solar system and the lowest WHIP in the live ball era (0.73). Then factor in that his rotations ERA without him (4.38) would be pretty much indistinguishable from Pittsburghs. And cap it off with the 5.5 wins above replacement that Fangraphs says he has been worth already -- the most by any pitcher at the break since Randy Johnson (5.9) in 2000. And what does it all tell us? This man is one of the great, franchise-changing figures in any sport. Thats what. And yes, thats how I define valuable. Im crazy like that.Apologies to: Arenado, Bryant, Madison Bumgarner, Carpenter, Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Crawford, Goldschmidt, Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rizzo, Corey Seager.AL MVP of the half-yearJose Altuve, Houston AstrosYou think its easy to make these picks? I could go with Mike Trout in every one of these columns and who could argue? I was also sure at various points I was going to hand this imaginary half-trophy to Josh Donaldson or Manny Machado, and theyve both earned it. But every time I had this debate with myself, I kept coming back to Jose Altuve, baseballs most lovable 5-foot-6 energizer. Except that 5-foot-6 dudes arent supposed to do the stuff Altuve does. Possibly because nobody of any size or shape has ever done all the stuff Altuve does. Hes outslugging Chris Davis and Bryce Harper, and hes 5-foot-6? Hes outhomering Jose Bautista, and hes 5-foot-6? Thats just crazy. But heres whats even crazier: Altuve is on pace to hit .341/.413/.542, with 25 homers, 44 doubles, 42 steals, 217 hits and more walks (75) than strikeouts (67). So how many seasons like that have there been in history -- by guys 5-foot-6, 6-foot-6, or anywhere in between? I cant find any. The young A-Rod came close once. Hanley Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and Jimmy Rollins made it into the outskirts of that neighborhood. But this, friends, is amazing -- as in MVP amazing. Jose Altuve. Gotta love this guy.Apologies to: Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Robinson Cano, Ian Desmond, Donaldson, Francisco Lindor, Machado, David Ortiz, Trout, Mark Trumbo.NL Least Valuable Player (LVP) of the half-yearCarl Crawford, Dodgers?I always liked Carl Crawford: good dude. And I hate to hand out LVP awards to people I like. But wow. You know how hard it is to get released when your team owes you $35 million? Might be harder than stealing 50 bases, which this man did five times. Might just be harder than signing a seven-year, $142 million contract in Boston and then not even making it through the second year of the contract without getting asked to please relocate 3,000 miles away. It must be hard because only three players in history (Crawford, Vernon Wells and Alfonso Soriano) ever got released in the middle of a $100 million-plus contract, and Crawford had almost as many dollars left on his deal as the other two combined. But by last month, the Dodgers had seen enough. Crawford was hitting .185 with a .464 OPS and zero stolen bases. He had just been part of a bizarre play at Wrigley Field in which he struck out on a ball that skipped past catcher Miguel Montero with two outs and a runner on third, then mysteriously stood around and waited until Montero tagged him out. And as always, Crawford didnt mean to screw up. He always meant well. He had just become, basically, a disaster. The Dodgers had paid him more than 70 million bucks since August 2012 and gotten a total of 2.9 wins above replacement out of it. So they moved on. And the good news is, the guy got two lovely parting gifts out of it: (A) the $35 million worth of paychecks that were about to keep on coming and (B) this LVP award.Sighs of relief for: Erick Aybar, Dee Gordon, Jason Heyward, Ryan Howard.AL LVP of the half-yearAlex Rodriguez, New York YankeesRemember back in spring training, when A-Rod revealed, in a series of classic A-Rod-esque interviews, that he definitely planned to retire ... in two years ... unless he didnt? We should have known then that this was going to be one of those years. But hey, its A-Rod. With this guy, you never know where anything is leading, do you? Now ordinarily, I would never present an LVP award to a fellow who is already on the other side of 40. But thats only because normally a team would never go into a season actually counting on a man his age. In this case, though, Rodriguez spent last year luring the Yankees into thinking he could be a real, live, middle-of-the-order presence. And then, well, this happened: A .260 on-base percentage and .642 OPS. The messy combination of 56 strikeouts and just 10 walks. A .198 batting average against right-handers. A .161 average when he hits third. A .159/.194/.175 slash line against the portion of the population known as relief pitchers. A .200 average against pitches 95 mph and faster, with no walks. An .099 average once the count reaches two strikes, with 56 strikeouts and 10 hits. A messy 65 in the modern metric known as weighted runs created plus, which indicates he has been tied for the eighth-least-productive hitter in the American League with at least 200 plate appearances?(but one of just two in that group who isnt permitted to redeem some of that nonproduction with his glove --?Prince Fielder?is a 65 as well). So if he could roll back the clock to March, youd think hed say he definitely plans to retire ... in two weeks?Sighs of relief for: Marlon Byrd, Fielder, Pablo Sandoval, Mark Teixeira.NL Cy Young of the half-yearClayton Kershaw, DodgersI dont know how superhuman Bumgarner, Jose Fernandez, Johnny Cueto and Noah Syndergaard would have had to be for me to pick somebody else besides Kershaw for this prestigious half-honor, which he has no idea even exists (possibly because it doesnt). But great as all those men have been, they werent this great. I dont have the time or space to fully document all of Kershaws first-half awesomeness. But Ill give you a taste. His first-half WHIP (0.73) is the lowest over the first half of any season since at least 1913, according to Baseball-Reference.coms indispensable Play Index. (And the previous standard, Grover Cleveland Alexanders 0.75, had held up a while -- like since 1915.) Kershaws absurd strikeout/walk ratio (145-to-9, which comes to 16.1-to-1) also happens to rank No. 1 in all the first halves in the Play Index era. Imagine that. You know how many pitchers before him had ever reached the All-Star break with an ERA under 1.80, this many strikeouts, a strikeout rate this good and 11 wins or more? Yeah, that would be zero. And how about this: He has already ripped off six double-digit strikeout games in which he forgot to walk a single hitter. No one had ever done that before the All-Star break, either -- possibly because the record for a whole season is six (shared by Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling). And have I mentioned this man might have had the greatest month in baseball history (5-0, 0.91 ERA in May, with 65 strikeouts, 2 walks)? I could pile on more of these superlatives for the next week or so. But youre probably catching on. Cant we just change the name to the Cy Kershaw Award? It would be so much fairer to the rest of the species.Apologies to: Bumgarner, Cueto, Fernandez, Stephen Strasburg, Syndergaard.AL Cy Young of the half-yearDanny Salazar, Cleveland IndiansYou should know something. If I were trying to use this pick to make myself look all intelligent and incisive (always a challenge, I might add), I would have presented this half-honor to Chris Sale.?Why? Because he was my preseason choice to win the Cy Young. And for my own dopey selfish reasons, I enjoy being right. But Sales 14 wins aside, its just not possible to argue that he -- or anyone else -- has been more dominant in this first half than Danny Salazar. Once upon a time, a guy like Sale, who was 14-3 and averaging about a strikeout an inning at the break, would have been everyones Cy Young choice. But we dont live in that world anymore. So while were well-aware that Sale has more wins,?Steven Wright?has a slightly tinier ERA and Marco Estrada has allowed a lower opponent batting average (with massive assistance from an off-the-charts .193 BABIP), none of them can match Salazars total body of work. Hes the only pitcher in the league who ranks in the top three in ERA, strikeout rate, ERA-plus, WAR and fielding independent pitching. And as David Schoenfield so eloquently noted the other day, Sale has almost pitched himself out of this conversation, with a 4.46 ERA since May 12, while Salazar exudes the look of a true dominator who has learned how to mix his killer changeup with a 95 mph heater. And how devastating is that changeup? The league is hitting .114 against it -- with 76 swings and misses but only 14 hits. So its always fun to pick a guy who churns out cool stats like that one, not to mention the fact that he could sit at a barstool next to about 97 percent of all living Americans, and they wouldnt know him from Alberto Salazar.Apologies to: Estrada, Corey Kluber, Jose Quintana, Sale, Wright.NL Cy Yuk of the half-yearShelby Miller, Arizona DiamondbacksI believe it was either Bruce Springsteen or Heathcliff Slocumb who once said: You cant walk away from the price you pay. And Im pretty sure Shelby Miller could tell you all about that -- probably for like the next 3? hours. It isnt his fault the Diamondbacks decided to trade the No. 1 pick in the draft (Dansby Swanson), one of their best pitching prospects (Aaron Blair) and one of baseballs best defensive outfielders (Ender Inciarte) for him last winter. But holy schmoly. From the moment Miller somehow hurt himself by scraping his hand on the mound throwing a pitch in April, its been hard to remember a trade this big that turned into this huge a mess this fast. Hasnt it? Fasten your seat belt securely around your waist. Then take a look at Millers first-half numbers: 2-9, 7.14 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, just two quality starts and a .312/.386/.523/.909 opponent slash line, which mean he has basically turned every hitter he has faced into Brandon Belt. So thats not real encouraging. And nobody has a good explanation, though the usual explanations apply (velocity down, command worse, delivery a mess, confidence shot). As Americas only licensed Cy Yuk voter, Ive come to learn that some of these picks are easier than others. If youre guessing this was one of them, hey, good guess!Cys of relief for: Andrew Cashner, Jorge De La Rosa, Trevor Rosenthal, Alfredo Simon.AL Cy Yuk of the half-yearClay Buchholz, Boston Red SoxLooking for one quick lowlight that sums up what made Clay Buchholz such a compelling candidate for this much-uncoveted award? It happened back on June 21. That was the night he made his triumphant return to the Boston rotation after 25 days of bullpen purgatory and promptly allowed the first two hitters to go homer/double -- on his first two pitches. Yikes. But that night and this disappointing season just make you reflect on exactly how long the Red Sox have been dreaming on this guy. Which would be practically a decade, if youre not Googling along at home. But this is the year those dreams have turned to pure Cy Yukkery -- and in a season in which it feels as if his team has never needed him more, too. Did you know the Red Sox are 3-10 when Buchholz starts (a .231 winning percentage that ranks last in baseball among men who have started that many games), but theyre 18 games over .500 (46-28) when anyone else starts? Did you know that, according to Baseball Reference, this fellow has subtracted more win probability than any starting pitcher in baseball? Thats hard to do, right? Did you know his 5.91 ERA would rank as the worst in the history of his esteemed franchise if he keeps this up? True story. Now toss in his 6.05 fielding independent pitching, which is the worst in the league among pitchers with 80-plus innings, and his three quality starts in 13 starts and what do you have? You have the stuff that Cy Yuks are made of. What else?Cys of relief for: Ubaldo Jimenez, Mat Latos, Anibal Sanchez, Yordano Ventura.Special bi-leagual mention to: James Shields.NL rookie of the half-yearCorey Seager, DodgersRemember way back in, oh, April, when it looked as if Corey Seager might not even be the best rookie shortstop in the National League (because we were so hypnotized by the prodigious starts by?Aledmys Diaz?and Trevor Story)? Um, never mind. Even in a rarified time for young shortstops, one thing weve learned over the past couple of months is that the guy who handles that gig at Chavez Ravine is special. But he also happens to be headed for possibly the greatest season by a rookie shortstop in the history of rookie shortstops. If he keeps mashing at his current rate, we would be looking at a fellow with an .879 OPS, 31 homers and 76 extra-base hits, which would be the most home runs ever by a rookie shortstop (topping Nomar Garciaparras 30). And the most extra-base hits ever by an NL rookie shortstop (topping Hanley Ramirezs 74). And the highest OPS by any rookie shortstop who ever lived (beating out Nomars .875). So that kind of caught my attention. Then there was Seagers just-halted 19-game hitting streak. You know who never had a streak that long while playing short? Oh, only Cal Ripken and?Ernie Banks -- whoever they are. But the most impressive part of Seagers first half is that he goes about it all with such a been-there, done-that look, you could easily forget hes 22. He has become the best player on a team with a $235 million payroll. And he ranks sixth in the National League in wins above replacement. Now all he has to do is take over the lead in WAR in his own family -- over brother?Kyle?-- and hell really have something to brag about.Apologies to: Diaz, Steven Matz, Kenta Maeda, Seung Hwan Oh, Story.AL rookie of the half-yearMichael Fulmer, Detroit TigersTook me a long time to figure this one out. In Texas, the Rangers dazzling 20-year-old right fielder, Nomar Mazara, is going to be a star. And this was his award to lose for a long time. But then Michael Fulmer (aka the guy the Mets traded to get Yoenis Cespedes) decided it was about time he turned himself into Bob Gibson. Starting with his May 21 start against Tampa Bay, Fulmer has made nine starts. He has given up a total of four earned runs in those nine starts. Four. Just to put that in perspective, over the same period of time, ESPN Stats & Information counts 261 instances in which a pitcher has allowed four earned runs in an inning. And Fulmer has allowed four in seven weeks. Meanwhile, never, in any of those nine starts, has he given up more than one earned run. So how many starting pitchers in the past century have ever had a streak of nine straight starts with one or nada earned runs allowed in their first season in the big leagues? That would be none, of course. And how would you like to guess the only nonrookie pitcher ever to have a longer streak than that in any single season in the live ball era? That would be -- right you are -- Bob Gibson himself, with 11 in a row in that 1968 season that made him a legend. I dont know if were watching the birth of a legend when we watch Fulmer do his thing. But with his mix of mid-90s fastball, power slider and disappearing changeup, we might at least be watching the birth of a young Josh Beckett.Apologies to: Ryan Dull, Dae-Ho Lee, Mazara, Tyler Naquin, Whit Merrifield.NL manager of the half-yearDusty Baker, Washington NationalsIts pretty crazy to look in the rear-view mirror now and remember that Dusty Baker wasnt even the Nationals first choice for this job. But Bud Blacks negotiation malfunction turned into Bakers ultimate opportunity. And these days, it almost feels as if it were meant to turn out this way. Sometimes all a man needs is the right situation at the right moment in time. And for Baker, thats precisely what this was. What his team needed was exactly what Baker does best: a manager who connects with people, vacuums all the tension out of the room and lets his best players do what they do. But if youve watched closely, youve also noticed something else. This man has evolved with the times. Hell never write a book on modern metrics. But if youve been waiting for a nightly parade of left-on-left, right-on-right bullpen matchups -- whether the data merits it or not -- we havent seen that. If youve been waiting for Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg to throw 138 pitches every time out, we havent seen that, either. (Only Tanner Roark has crossed his 120-pitch threshold all year, as a matter of fact.) So as always, there are a bunch of compelling choices for this award. But none has been a better fit than the star of Mr. Baker Goes to Washington.Apologies to: Bruce Bochy, Joe Maddon, Pete Mackanin.AL manager of the half-yearBuck Showalter, Baltimore OriolesA mere three months ago, 31 of us ESPN baseball geniuses made our always-astute predictions for this season. And looking back on those picks, its actually shocking how many teams we were right about. (Who knew!) But how many of us believed back then, in the core of our souls, that the Orioles were getting ready to win the AL East? Oops. That would be none of us. So when I make my manager of the year picks in a season like this -- in which Terry Francona and Jeff Banister are just as deserving -- I dont know how else Im supposed to separate one man from a great pack. But heres to Buck Showalter, a human being who always seems to be operating a step ahead of the rest of us -- not just in baseball but in thinking through life on this planet. Im not sure what other manager would have looked at Adam Jones, a man with the second-lowest walk rate of any active hitter with 5,000 plate appearances (and 27th-lowest since 1900!), and said: Lets make him the leadoff hitter. Thatll get him going. But, of course, that worked. And you sure dont see a whole lot of managers who can conduct the bullpen orchestra as artistically as Showalter does, every day of every year. Never overworking anyone, no matter how tempting. Working around his almost total lack of left-handed setup help. And still finding a way to win with one of baseballs shakiest rotations. You just dont meet many managers with such a complete feel for every player on his roster and every moment that confronts him. So its hard to imagine finding this team in first place without him.Apologies to: Francona, Banister, A.J. Hinch. Cheap Custom Florida Panthers Jerseys .
