The Minnesota Vikings have signed offensive tackle Brian O’Neill Adam Vinatieri Jersey , their second-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh.

The four-year deal was done Friday, before Vikings rookie minicamp began. They have three of their eight draft picks left unsigned: first-round cornerback Mike Hughes, fourth-round defensive end Jalyn Holmes, and fifth-round tight end Tyler Conklin.

O’Neill was the 62nd overall selection, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound converted tight end. He played in all 38 games over the last three seasons for the Panthers, forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter the draft. The Vikings lauded his athleticism but stressed the need for him to add strength. O’Neill is likely headed for a backup role this season behind starting tackles Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers.

No debate that the most important position in the NFL is quarterback. But in fantasy, there may be as much depth at the position as there ever has been.

Sure, we’d all like Green Bay superstar Aaron Rodgers to start for our teams, but that privilege may not be worth a third- or fourth-round pick in most leagues.

Unless you’re in a league in which you can start more than one QB (superflex/2 QB leagues) or one that awards 6 points for a touchdown pass, do not take a QB until the eighth round at the earliest.

This isn’t to say that you should completely pass on players like Rodgers or New England’s Tom Brady. If Rodgers falls to the fifth round or later, the value would be too good. But generally Aaron Lynch Jersey , load up on as many running backs and wide receivers as possible.

The depth at QB means you can get a player like Philip Rivers (Chargers), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh) or Andrew Luck (Indianapolis) later in your draft. They each have warts but it’s better to have depth at RB or WR in the middle rounds rather than take a QB that may not outscore someone you can draft several rounds later by anything more than a few points per week.

History tells us that there will be several top QBs that will outscore others at that position by a significant amount, but the passers ranked No. 4 to No. 13 will be separated by about 4 fantasy points per week. That just isn’t enough of a difference to justify passing on a third running back or receiver.

A question that every fantasy owner should ask when thinking about drafting a top-level QB is whether the team will look better with that QB and a running back like Marlon Mack, or with a receiver like Golden Tate and Luck. Take the second option every time.

When it comes to quarterbacks and other positions, fantasy analysts place players in tiers. Rodgers is in a tier all by himself. He is the best fantasy QB today and it may not be all that close. Don’t be worried about the broken collarbone from last season. Rodgers has the arm strength to throw every pass required and although he won’t run as much as Carolina’s Cam Newton or Seattle’s Russell Wilson, he still has the ability to escape the pocket to gain yardage on the ground or more importantly, buy time for one of his receivers to get open.

The next tier has a few more options: Philadelphia’s Carson Wentz, Houston’s Deshaun Watson, Newton, Wilson and Brady. Any one of them can start for your fantasy team but they aren’t perfect by any means.

Newton had accuracy problems throughout his career and they aren’t likely to improve much this season. Still, his ability to scramble for yardage and TDs make him valuable. Wentz may or may not be ready for Week 1. If you draft Wentz, you may feel the need to select Nick Foles later as insurance. While no one can truly blame you for doing so Josh Sitton Jersey , it’s a waste of a valuable bench slot. Watson is also coming off a torn ACL and one has to wonder if he will be able to move around as well as he did last season, and let’s also not forget that he only has a handful of starts under his belt. You may love Wilson for what he did last year, but now that Doug Baldwin (knee) could miss the entire preseason and Jimmy Graham left via free agency, there just isn’t much left for him to throw to. Brady may be the greatest real-life QB of all time, but the team lost Nate Solder and Brandin Cooks and Julian Edelman is suspended for four games. Throw in that rookie running back Sony Michel will undergo knee surgery and maybe this won’t be his year.

After those top QBs are gone, wait another round or two and just take whoever’s left. Drew Brees (New Orleans), Kirk Cousins (Minnesota), Matthew Stafford (Detroit), Roethlisberger, Rivers, and Luck round out the next tier. Brees is not the QB he once was. The Saints have one of the best ground attacks in the game and a legitimate defense. They don’t need Brees to put the ball in the air 40-plus times a game anymore. Cousins has solid weapons around him and a strong defense. Now that he finally has the big contract he may finally relax and put up big numbers. Stafford is about as consistent as they come and is a safe play. Yeah, starting Roethlisberger on the road can be an issue as his splits are awful but perhaps a change in coordinators eliminates that problem. Rivers is sort of a forgotten man but like Stafford , also very consistent and won’t cost you much. Luck’s price is only going to get higher as fantasy owners start to believe in his health.

The position is so deep that even if you don’t end up with one of the top 12, you still have the likes of Matt Ryan (Atlanta), Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco), Alex Smith (Washington) and Marcus Mariota (Tennessee) available.

That gives you the wiggle room to wait while filling other positions early.

The Chicago Blackhawks are taking a closer look at their house after missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

They aren’t sure just yet if a complete teardown is necessary.

The Blackhawks are heading into one of their most intriguing summers in years after finishing with 33 wins and 76 points , their lowest totals since they went 31-42-9 during the 2006-07 season. While they might not make any big changes, improvement next year is mandatory, general manager Stan Bowman said Monday.

”This year was extremely disappointing,” Bowman said. ”Last year was more abrupt, but this was equally disappointing. I’m not happy with where we are. We’re going to examine everything, look long and hard at ways to improve through personnel.”

The Blackhawks have been on a downward trend since winning the 2015 Stanley Cup. They were eliminated by St. Louis in seven games in the first round of the 2016 playoffs, and then were swept by Nashville in the opening round last year.

They stumbled all the way to last in the Central Division this season, falling short of the playoffs for the first time since star forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were rookies during the 2007-08 season.

Bowman said the team’s top priority is keeping the young players who impressed this season. Rookie Alex DeBrincat had a team-high 28 goals, one more than Kane Jerrell Freeman Jersey , and Vinnie Hinostroza showed flashes of promise after beginning the year in the minors.

”That’s the direction we’re headed,” Bowman said. ”They’ve showed they’re part of the future.”

His second priority is free agency, and Bowman said he’s more interested in short-term deals than longer pacts that would tie his hands in the future.

He could look for goaltender help after Corey Crawford missed the final 47 games with an upper-body injury. He also could focus on his blue line after top defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook showed signs of age this season.

”This was an off year in about every category,” coach Joel Quenneville said. ”From every individual except two or three, we expect more next year.”

Both Bowman and Quenneville expressed confidence in a healthy return for Crawford, who went 16-9-2 with a sparkling 2.27 goals-against average in 28 games. Anton Forsberg, Jean-Francois Berube and Jeff Glass all struggled in goal after Crawford got hurt.

”He’s on the right track, close to being ready to go,” Quenneville said.

Toews , who missed the last eight games with an upper-body injury, said previous successes ”happened naturally, organically. Now there’s a lot of issues you need to find solutions. We need to take a creative approach to finding solutions. It’s humbling to a certain degree. You feel like you’re starting over.”

The NHL draft lottery is April 28, and Chicago has a 6.5 percent chance of winning the top pick. The Blackhawks drafted Toews with the third overall pick in 2006 and got Kane with the No. 1 selection in 2007, fueling their run to three Stanley Cup titles.

Crawford’s injury just before Christmas turned the season around. They were in a playoff position on Dec. 23, his last appearance, and fell out of contention soon after he was placed on injured reserve.

The Blackhawks allowed 256 goals, 67 more than they gave up during the 2014-15 season. Keith, a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the league’s top defenseman Ibraheim Campbell Jersey , finished with a career-worst minus-29 rating, the worst such number on the team.

One of the most memorable moments of the season was Patrick Sharp’s final game at the United Center. The 36-year-old Sharp is planning to retire after finishing with 10 goals and 11 assists in his 15th NHL season. The team honored Sharp with a highlight video in the third period of its home finale, and he waved his stick and tapped his heart to acknowledge the sustained roar of the crowd.

Defenseman Henri Jokiharju could get a long look during training camp in the fall. He was selected by the Blackhawks in the first round of last year’s draft, but he doesn’t turn 19 until June.

Kane has decided to keep playing. USA Hockey announced Monday that Kane will captain the U.S. team for the world championship in May in Denmark.

Broncos defensive tackle Clinton McDonald expects to begin training camp on time with his teammates, Mike Kliss of Denver’s 9News reports.

“I’m good to go,” McDonald said.

McDonald missed the offseason program with a bacterial infection stemming for a 2015 shoulder surgery. He underwent a procedure in New York to drain the infection, per Kliss, and Dr. David Altcheck has cleared McDonald.

McDonald will undergo a physical this week.

He signed as a free agent after making five sacks last season with the Bucs, but because he didn’t pass a physical before the mandatory minicamp last month , McDonald had to restructure his contract so that the $4 million no longer is guaranteed.

The Broncos may have to place only one player, receiver Jordan Taylor, on the physically unable to perform list to start camp, per Kliss. The Broncos’ medical staff still is discussing options for Shane Ray.

>There aren’t as many players who can really still be considered daily fantasy sleepers at the end of the NFL season. Still , there are plenty of Week 15 values that you might be hesitant to use, leading to a contrarian lineup and some nice returns.AARON RODGERS, QB, Green Bay ($6,800 DraftKings/$8,500 FanDuel)This may be your only chance to get a discount on Rodgers (more so on DraftKings). If the Packers are ready for Rodgers to play, you should be, too. Rodgers was having another terrific season before his injury, putting up scores of 30-plus in three straight games, including 10 touchdowns in that stretch. The Packers have worked hard to succeed without him and playing with Rodgers will only make those around him, like Jordy Nelson, better or fantasy relevant again. Rodgers has one of the highest ceilings in Week 15, especially against a Panthers secondary that’s started to slump.NICK FOLES, QB, Philadelphia ($5,500/$6,000)Foles has been here before , and the 27-2 touchdown to interception ratio season is an example of his upside. We’re not asking Foles to play that well again, and this is a different offense, but he has some great weapons and a great matchup. The Giants just let Dak Prescott have the best passing game of his career and are now averaging the most quarterback fantasy points per game allowed.LATAVIUS MURRAY, RB, Minnesota ($4,900/$6,200)Jordan Howard just obliterated the Bengals defense. With players dropping each week, the Bengals defense has little to nothing left. Murray is the lead option for the Vikings and the top goal-line option, which means he should see 15-20 carries and a few scoring opportunities. Minnesota could even lean on Murray more with Kyle Rudolph looking doubtful and Case Keenum looking to rebound from a mediocre game. Murray won’t replicate Howard’s performance completely, but he might come close as the Vikings continue the playoff push.KENYAN DRAKE, RB, Miami ($5,800/$6,500)Even if Damien Williams returns, Drake is clearly the superior option as he’s put up 20-plus points each of the past two weeks. There could be snow in Buffalo again this week, which means a heavy run approach for both teams. If Drake even nears 20 touches with the way he’s playing and the state of the Bills defense (which let Frank Gore run all over them last week), he could put up his third straight 20-point game.DEDE WESTBROOK Chris Thompson Jersey , WR, Jacksonville ($5,100/$5,700)Marqise Lee has been the Jaguars’ top option this year and has provided nice value so far. However, Westbrook has emerged of late, outscoring Lee over the past three games and putting himself in contention for being considered the new No. 1. On top of that, no team allows more big plays to receivers than the Texans.JAMISON CROWDER, WR, Washington ($5,600/$6,800)Yes, Kirk Cousins and the Redskins struggled against the Chargers, but that Chargers defense is playing at an elite level of late. Outside of Patrick Peterson, the Cardinals defense has been weak against the pass. Second and third receivers, especially talented slot options, have dominated the Cardinals this year. Look for the Redskins and Cousins to bounce back in Week 15. With Peterson focused on Josh Doctson, Crowder will have the potential for a strong performance.RICKY SEALS-JONES , TE, ARI ($3,000/$5,300)The Redskins gave up 50 yards and a touchdown to Hunter Henry last week. Washington has allowed a tight end touchdown in five of its last six games. Ricky Seals-Jones is still a favorite of Blaine Gabbert.ZACH ERTZ, TE, Philadelphia ($6,000/$7,900)Like Foles, Ertz is a contrarian play given the situation. Unlike Foles, the price is tougher to swallow but the Giants are still the worst team at defending the tight end. Ertz has regularly put up big games against the Giants, and he’s one of the few players with a connection to Foles when he used to start for the Eagles. With Ertz back from a concussion, he’s in the discussion with Rob Gronkowski and Travis Kelce as one of the elite options. This column was provided to The Associated Press by the Fantasy Sports Network,
The Steelers aren’t going to see Le'Veon Bell until Week 1 unless the running back gets a long-term deal, but Bell said on Instagram Live that he is not sitting out the season.

Instead, Bell said he will follow what he did last year, skipping training camp before signing the franchise tag tender the week of the season opener.

鈥淗onestly, no , I’m not going to sit out,鈥?Bell said in the chat, via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. 鈥淚’m going to be in the facility Week 1. It’s going to be a rerun of last year. I’m not going to camp. I’m not doing nothing else extra, OTAs, none of that.

鈥淚’m going to strictly go to what I have to go to. I want to win every game. I want to have the best statistical career that I [possibly] can, so I want to play in every game that I can possibly play.鈥?/p>

The Steelers have until July 16 to work out a long-term deal with Bell. Otherwise, he will play under the one-year, $14.54 million tender.

鈥淗opefully, when it comes down to it, we won’t have to deal with [sitting out],鈥?Bell said. 鈥淲e’ll get a deal done. That’s the biggest thing. We want to get a deal done. . . . If not, I’ll handle it from there, but I definitely won’t be in camp. It’s basically a rerun of last year.鈥?/p> Authentic Womens Kyle Lauletta Jersey

Jordan Zimmermann looked like a $110 million pitcher in his last start. The Detroit Tigers hope the oft-injured Zimmermann can produce like that on a regular basis.

Zimmermann Jeremy Kerley Jersey , who will start for the Tigers against the Texas Rangers on Friday in Detroit, has been a huge disappointment since signing a five-year, $110 million free-agent contract in November 2015. His first two seasons with the club were marred by injuries and ineffectiveness.

He took another trip to the disabled list in May because of a shoulder impingement. He has made three starts since his return and was sharp at Toronto on Sunday, holding the Blue Jays to one run on five hits in seven innings. He didn’t issue a walk while striking out six.

His curveball and slider neutralized Toronto’s lineup as the Tigers ended an 11-game losing streak.

“My off-speed stuff was really good (Sunday),” Zimmermann said afterward. “I think the slider’s coming back.”

If Zimmermann (3-0, 3.91 ERA) can string together some quality outings, he could help the Tigers on two fronts. He could provide stability to a rotation that hasn’t gone deep into games often enough. He could also enhance his trade value, which would provide financial relief to a rebuilding franchise.

He lost his only career start against the Rangers despite holding them to three runs in eight innings in 2016.

Detroit’s roster has been in a state of flux since losing first baseman Miguel Cabrera to a season-ending biceps injury last month. Center fielder Leonys Martin and closer Shane Greene are on the disabled list, and Opening Day second baseman Dixon Machado has been designated for assignment.

Niko Goodrum, who has taken over second base, hit a solo homer Thursday but Texas took the opener of the series 7-5. The Tigers have lost 14 of their last 16 games.

Zimmermann, 32, is 13 years younger than his mound opponent in the second game of the four-game series. Bartolo Colon (5-5, 4.76) will make his 16th start this season for Texas.

Colon lasted just long enough to collect the victory in his last appearance Dave Robinson Jersey , when he gave up three runs in five innings to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

With another victory Friday, he will surpass Dennis Martinez for the most wins by a Latin American pitcher. They are tied at 245.

“Tying Dennis Martinez, it’s such an accomplishment,” Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre told after Colon’s last outing. “It takes him a long time, 45 years, but it’s nice that he was able to get that, and hopefully he can break it in his next start.”

Colon is 9-10 with a 5.20 ERA in 29 career appearances (28 starts) against Detroit.

Texas designated hitter Shin-Soo Choo did not play in the series opener, so his on-base streak remains at 44 games. He is dealing with tightness in his right quadriceps.

“I don’t want to push it,” Choo told the Dallas Morning News. “Do this until the All-Star break, and the rest will help.”

Joey Gallo and Ronald Guzman picked up the slack Thursday, delivering two-run homers as the Rangers built a seven-run lead and held off Detroit’s late surge.

France is back in the World Cup final for the first time since Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt in 2006.

Twelve years after one of soccer’s most infamous moments, Samuel Umtiti used his head to score from a corner kick in the 51st minute and earn France a 1-0 victory over Belgium in the first of the all-European semifinals.

The French players danced on the field after the final whistle and shook the hand of Thierry Henry, who helped Les Bleus win the World Cup in 1998 and is now Belgium’s assistant coach.

France will face either Croatia or England in the final on Sunday in Moscow. Those two teams play in the other semifinal match on Wednesday, also in Moscow.

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris produced a great save in each half , denying the potent Belgian attack of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku the chance to advance the country to its first major final.

LONDON (AP) – Serena Williams came up with a comeback to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon, then walked off Centre Court with her right index finger aloft.

Williams moved closer to her eighth title at the All England Club and 24th Grand Slam trophy overall – but first since missing more than a year while having a baby – by beating 52nd-ranked Camila Giorgi of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Next up for the 36-year-old American is a match against No. 13 seed Julia Goerges of Germany, a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner against No. 20 Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.

The other semifinal Thursday will be No. 11 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany vs. No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. Kerber needed seven match points to close out No. 14 Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-3, 7-5 at Centre Court, while Ostapenko defeated 2014 Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-5, 6-4 on a windy No. 1 Court.

In the last men’s quarterfinal, which was suspended because of darkness after the third set Monday night, 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro defeated Gilles Simon of France 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5) Russ Grimm Jersey , 5-7, 7-6 (5).

LAS VEGAS (AP) – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is certain that changes are coming to the league.

Some are easy, others, not so much.

Speaking after the NBA’s Board of Governors meeting, Silver said he thinks the league is ready to scrap the rule requiring players to be out of high school for a year before becoming eligible to enter the draft. That one should be relatively simple to move forward now, while notions such as how to find more competitive balance are still a puzzler to the league and its commissioner.

Silver said he loves `where the league is right now,’ but believe there cold be a better system. Part of that, he thinks, will be reverting back to the policy that will allow players to go into the league right out of high school – something that should be in place in time for the 2021 NBA Draft, though that timeline has not been formally announced.

Any change to the rule will require that the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement will have to be amended.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Michele Roberts was unanimously re-elected to another four-year term as executive director of the National Basketball Players Association.

Roberts first moved into the role in 2014, about two years before the players and the league agreed on the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. The extension means that Roberts will almost certainly be deeply involved in negotiating whatever the next CBA will look like.

The union was without an executive director for more than a year before Roberts got the job, and she said overcoming the skepticism of players – who were reeling after the way Billy Hunter’s term as director came to a turbulent end – was critical to her success.

Her second term will end in 2022, when both the players and the league can decide to opt out of the current CBA. She said the union is already preparing for what the next CBA will look like.

NEW YORK (AP) – The NFL Players Association filed a grievance with the league challenging its national anthem policy.

The union says that the new policy, which the league imposed without consultation with the NFLPA Zach Miller Jersey , is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement and infringes on players’ rights. The filing met a statute of limitations deadline and will be heard by an independent arbitrator, an NFLPA spokesman said.

In May, the NFL approved its national anthem policy at its owners meetings in Atlanta. The policy allows players to protest during the national anthem by staying in the locker room, but forbids them from sitting or taking a knee if they’re on the field or the sidelines. Teams will be subject to fines if players don’t comply and will have the option of punishing players.

When the league announced the policy, Commissioner Roger Goodell called it a compromise aimed at putting the focus back on football after a tumultuous year in which television ratings dipped nearly 10 percent; some blamed the protests for such a drop. The union said at that time that it would file a grievance against any change in the collective bargaining agreement.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – The Tampa Bay Rays unveiled an elaborate plan for a new domed stadium that would take them across Tampa Bay to the Ybor City section of Tampa at a cost of nearly $900 million.

The 30,842-seat stadium would be the smallest in Major League Baseball and would be covered by a fully enclosed and translucent roof, not a retractable dome.

James Neal has become a source of leadership and inspiration for the Vegas Golden Knights during their improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final.

So , it came as no surprise that the 11-year veteran made a point of seeking out teammate Alex Tuch, a 22-year-old rookie who missed a chance to score the potential tying goal late in Game 2 against the Washington Capitals

”I talked with him a little bit today,” Neal said Friday. ”It’s all good. He’ll get a bigger one for us later in the series. He’s been great for us so far, so no reason to think about that anymore. At the end of the day, it’s a great save and you move forward.”

Braden Holby snuffed the shot with his goalie stick in a 3-2 victory that evened the series heading in Game 3 on Saturday night.

Vegas snagged a winner when they selected Neal from Nashville last June in the expansion draft. They got a skilled forward who scored 20 goals in 10 straight seasons (now 11) and a player who turned out to be perfect for a team that had to mesh immediately to be successful.

”He’s a natural leader,” Golden Knights right wing Ryan Reaves said. ”He likes leading the boys into battle. When he has something to say he’s going to say it, and people are going to listen.”

Neal reached the Stanley Cup Final last year with the Predators, who lost to Pittsburgh. Now here he is again, with another crack at winning it all.

”It’s a special team and a special group of guys,” Neal said. ”I’ve been to the finals before, so just try to give them little tips. I try to lead by example Kyle Fuller Jersey , do the right things on the ice. We’ve got a group that responds well.”

Neal seriously wants to win, but he isn’t always serious. And that’s the way his teammates like it.

”I’m not going to pump his tires too much because I don’t want to hear about it, but he’s definitely one of those guys that keeps it loose,” Reaves said. ”You need guys like that around the team. You can’t be 100 percent business-like all the time. You’ve got to have fun.”

Vegas goaltender Marc Andre-Fleury is the only other player on the club who’s played in the Stanley Cup Final, so he and Neal have been taking turns doling out advice.

”In the locker room he’s a big voice,” Fleury said of Neal. ”He’s been to the finals, so it’s good to have someone else who can share that experience.”

Although Neal is a rarity in that he’s been to consecutive Stanley Cup Finals with two different teams, his most emphatic message is: Don’t take this ride for granted.

”You see how badly he wants to win,” left wing David Perron said. ”To go through that last year and not come out on top, he’s got a huge chip on his shoulder and really wants to get it this time. He’s talking to guys, telling them you never know if you’re going to get another opportunity Rafael Bush Jersey , so you’ve got to find a way to bring your best.”

Toward that end, the 30-year-old Neal has helped carry the team with his stick. He has five goals and five assists in 17 games during the playoffs, including Vegas’ first goal in Game 2 on Wednesday.

Asked whether Neal is more valuable as a player or a leader, Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant replied, ”On the ice is the major thing for me. When he scores goals like he did the last game, he makes our job a lot easier as coaches. James has been outstanding for us. He definitely helps our room with the young players, for sure.”

Most notably, Tuch.

”He’s been a mentor to me. He brought me aside today and told me what I could have done better on that shot but also that I have to move on,” Tuch said. ”Everyone knows how good a hockey player he is. I don’t know if people knew he was that much of a leader. Maybe it was a different vibe in Nashville. But this year he’s been a huge leader for us, one of our (six alternate) captains, and it’s been great.”

More Stanley Cup coverage: The Philadelphia Eagles went from playoff spectators to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy DeShone Kizer Jersey , an impressive one-season turnaround that was far from unprecedented in the modern NFL.

The Eagles were the seventh team in the past 19 seasons to pull off that trick in a sport that always goes through some significant playoff turnover each season.

There have been at least four new playoff teams each year since the NFL went to the 12-team format in 1990, including eight new postseason participants last season when the Eagles won it all.

With new blood coming into the playoffs each year, there are just as many teams heading another way, doomed by injuries, age, bad luck, poor coaching or other reasons.

Here’s a look at three teams that could go from playoff spectators to participants, and three others that could go the opposite direction:

Houston Texans: Deshaun Watson showed flashes of becoming a star quarterback in six starts as a rookie before getting hurt. With the dynamic Watson on offense and a healthy J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus back on defense, the Texans could be in position to get back into the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. The Texans scored at least 33 points in Watson’s final five starts and then went 1-8 after he had a season-ending injury in practice. Keeping Watson healthy will be necessary it the Texans are going to rebound.

Green Bay Packers: Green Bay’s run of eight straight playoff appearances ended last season thanks mostly to a collarbone injury that limited star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to seven games. With Rodgers again healthy, the Packers should be among the contenders in the NFC, as they usually are. Green Bay was much more active this offseason under new GM Brian Gutekunst Tramon Williams Jersey , adding prominent free agents like Jimmy Graham and Muhammad Wilkerson. New defensive coordinator Mike Pettine should bring a more aggressive approach that could help support Rodgers and the offense.

San Francisco 49ers: San Francisco won its final five games last year after making the switch to Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. With Garoppolo signed long term and poised to take his 7-0 career record into his first full season as an NFL starter and coach Kyle Shanahan having much more talent in Year 2 at the helm, the Niners could have the pieces to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. Free-agent running back Jerick McKinnon should spark the offense, and the defense has some key building blocks in DT DeForest Buckner and LB Reuben Foster. Richard Sherman could provide a defensive boost at cornerback if his Achilles tendon injury is healed.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills ended the longest playoff drought in North America’s four major sports leagues when they made the postseason for the first time since 1999. Repeating that in coach Sean McDermott’s second season will be a more difficult trick, especially with the change made at quarterback this offseason. Tyrod Taylor was traded to Cleveland, leaving either career backup A.J. McCarron or raw rookie Josh Allen as the top two options. Making the playoffs with one of those two at the helm would be a long shot, even in the weaker AFC.

Tennessee Titans: The Titans also ended a playoff drought last season, making the postseason for the first time since 2008 under third-year quarterback Marcus Mariota and coach Mike Mularkey. Even winning a postseason game wasn’t enough for Mularkey to keep his job and Tennessee is now retooling under new coach Mike Vrabel. The Titans are in a tough division with Houston and Indianapolis likely taking big steps forward if Watson and Andrew Luck are healthy, and Jacksonville having one of the league’s most talented rosters. That makes a return to the postseason a difficult proposition in Tennessee.

Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons took a step back last year after their Super Bowl collapse the previous season but still made the playoffs as a wild-card team. The offense regressed a bit after losing Shanahan as coordinator. There still is plenty of talent in Atlanta led by quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones, but the NFC is stacked, leaving little margin for error.

Former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. has been charged with raping an unconscious teenager 15 years ago.

Authorities say the 17-year-old girl was assaulted in 2003 in San Diego County.

Other details haven’t been released. Winslow hasn’t entered a plea yet.

The charge was added Thursday as Winslow was ordered to stand trial on charges of kidnapping and raping two women earlier this year in Encinitas , California. The women were in their 50s.

Prosecutors say the attacks were part of a three-month crime spree targeting middle-aged and elderly women.

Winslow has pleaded not guilty to those charges. He could face life in prison if convicted.

Winslow is the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow. From 2004 to 2013, he played for Cleveland, Tampa Bay, New England and the New York Jets.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Throughout its offseason team activities, the Seattle Seahawks appeared to be settled at safety. Bradley McDougald would just continue his role from a year ago stepping in as a full-time starter alongside Earl Thomas.

That was before Thomas decided to take his demands for a new contract to the extreme by holding out , creating an unexpected competition and a bit of chaos in Seattle’s defensive backfield.

With Thomas missing, Seattle’s safeties are a revolving door of combinations trying to find the pairing that makes the most sense ahead of the Sept. 9 opener at Denver. The process of seeing how all those combinations look gets its first true examination next Thursday when the Seahawks open the preseason against Indianapolis.

“These guys, they kind of joined forces in the offseason and kind of as a group, they knew they were up against it and wanted to make sure that they were going to give everything they had and put it all on the line,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. “Bradley McDougald has done a great job of being the leader in that group and it’s a good, tight group and they’re ready to take on the challenge of getting through camp and getting through all of the learning and the experience that’s necessary here is all part of the process , but their attitude is really strong and they’re really determined to do something with this.”

McDougald is almost certain to claim one of the positions. Which one is the question. He filled in as both free and strong safety last year when injuries sidelined Thomas and Kam Chancellor. McDougald was the starting strong safety after Chancellor was lost for the season in early November to a neck injury.

That doesn’t mean McDougald will be the strong safety. Throughout the first week of training camp, Seattle has rotated its safeties in both positions in an attempt to see how interchangeable the players can be.

“They have the opportunity to show themselves and it’s a lot of competition,” defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said. “Great communication, it’s showing up every day. Doing extra work, asking a lot of good questions. But, this is their chance to really step up and show us what they have.”

With McDougald seemingly a cinch to take one of the safety spots Phillip Gaines Jersey , the remaining position appears to be a four-way competition between Tedric Thompson, Delano Hill, Maurice Alexander and Mike Tyson. And it’s Thompson and Hill that appear to be getting the most opportunity early on.

It makes sense Seattle would give Thompson and Hill the most reps. The Seahawks invested major draft capital in the pair a year ago, taking Hill in the third round and Thompson in the fourth round. They were allowed to spend last season learning behind Thomas and Chancellor with the idea they could eventually take over for the veteran Seahawks safeties.

The replacement has arrived sooner than expected, accelerated by Thomas’ holdout.

“Earl is a special, special player. At the same time , the guys that are here are working really hard and competing and they have the opportunity to show what they can do,” Norton said.

From a look standpoint, Thompson fits the mold of a free safety and Hill looks more like a strong safety. But each is working at both positions as Seattle often adjusts its safety alignments based off the offensive formation. Neither has the sideline-to-sideline speed of Thomas, but Norton has said Seattle’s scheme won’t change.

“I view it as competing. First game is a little ways to go. I’ve got a lot to improve on,” Thompson said. “I don’t focus on if I’m starting today or not starting today. We all get the same amount of reps so it’s all about competing.”

HOUSTON -- J. Atletico Madrid Jerseys .J. Watt was back on the field in Houstons 23-14 win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, but not quite back to form after missing the entire preseason following back surgery.Im knocking a little bit of rust off, and I think as we move forward here Ill start to feel fully like myself again, he said. But theres definitely some things I wish I could have done differently today.Coach Bill OBrien wasnt surprised at how Watt looked and thought he improved as the game progressed.I think its hard when you havent practiced in a long time or played in a game in a long time, OBrien said. I thought at the end there, he was really revving. He was going pretty good.Watt said he didnt feel any lingering effects from the surgery he had in July to repair a herniated disk and he played about as much as he normally does. But the man who has won NFLs Defensive Player of the Year the last two seasons and three of the last four wasnt the game-changer he has routinely been in the past.Physically my body feels fine, he said. I just need to get back into fully being myself out there and trusting my body and letting my body take over and do what it knows how to do.While Watt, who led the NFL with 17 + sacks last season, didnt sack Jay Cutler on Sunday, he did register three hits on the quarterback. Watts teammates sacked Cutler five times, with Whitney Mercilus getting two and Jadeveon Clowney, Josh Simon and Andre Hal tallying one each.Watt enjoyed watching his teammates get after Cutler and cant wait to see what Houstons defensive front will be able to do once hes back to full strength. Its a lot of fun out there and its fun when everybody is making plays, he said. You never know where its going to come from ... it could be anybody and thats whats so fun about our defense.Watt had a difficult offseason and had surgery to repair five torn muscles in his core in January before going under the knife again to repair his back problem. Watt wasnt too hard on himself for not playing up to his lofty expectations on Sunday after the months of rehabilitation it took to reach his goal of returning for Week 1.Its been a long road and to be out there with my teammates for a win, it feels great, he said. We overcame a lot. While Watt was still shaking off the effects of his injury, Clowney looked to be completely healthy for the first time since his NFL debut in 2014. Clowney, who was the top overall pick in 2014, has failed to live up to expectations in two injury-filled seasons. But on Sunday the Texans moved him around often and he showed flashes of what convinced them to select him first in the draft. He finished with five tackles, including two for losses and had a career-high three hits on Cutler. My first game ever was shaky, first two seasons were shaky, had a couple of injuries, but Im feeling better and going out there competing and having fun, Clowney said. Were winning games. So thats great. With Watt not at full strength the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Clowney had to deal with some of the double-teams that Watt normally commands on Sunday. It was rough, Clowney said with a laugh. I know what he goes through.Clowneys performance drew rave reviews from coaches, players and even team owner Bob McNair.Hes doing what we thought he would do when he was healthy, McNair said. Hes going to be fun to watch, and J.J. will play himself back into shape. So the defense will do nothing but get better.----Online:AP NFL website: and .C. -- Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. .Y. - Rob Manfred was promoted Monday to Major League Baseballs chief operating officer, which may make him a candidate to succeed Bud Selig as commissioner. . The Indianapolis Colts have bought themselves a chance in the AFC South race. Cordarrelle Patterson Jersey . But are they equipped to take advantage of it Thursday night?Monday nights revelation that quarterback Andrew Luck has entered into the NFLs concussion protocol comes at a really bad time for Indianapolis. Because it is hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night at Lucas Oil Stadium to round out the slate of Thanksgiving games, Luck has three fewer days to make it through protocol.Luck, who was injured in Sundays 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans early in the fourth quarter but still finished the game, seems like a long shot to make it through protocol by 8:30 Thursday night. Of the players who have been placed in protocol this year, just one has passed all the tests required to play in fewer than five days.Given that backdrop -- and some players do recover quicker than others, although most teams arent cavalier when it comes to head injuries -- it appears likely that Scott Tolzien will run the Colts in this critical game.Tolzien, who was Aaron Rodgers backup in Green Bay the last three years, started two games in Rodgers stead during the 2013 season. He threw for 339 yards at the New York Giants, although he also tossed three interceptions in a 27-13 loss, and was less impressive in a game against Minnesota before getting hooked in a game the Packers rallied to tie.Since that game, Tolzien has tossed one pass, completing it last year for four yards. Barring a stunningly quick recovery by Luck, Tolzien will throw many more passes in this one.Weve got a guy that comes to work every single day and prepares like a starter ever since hes been in this building, Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano said. He understands and knows this offense and if thats the case, hell go out and play winning football. At 5-5, the Colts are only a game back of Houston in the division, thanks to the Texans 27-20 loss Monday night to Oakland in Mexico City. A win Thursday night would cut that deficit in half, and Houston must host San Diego, which is coming off its bye, Sunday on a short week and after the rigors of playing in 7,500-foot altitude. So the table is set for Indianapolis, even if it doesnt have all the ingredients it would like. You dont ever want to be without anybody, but we have been down this road before and we have handled it well, Pagano said. Faced a bunch of adversity and obstacles just like everybody else.Pittsburgh (5-5) certainly wont display any sympathy for the Colts. It had to play New England last month without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and predictably lost. That was one of four straight losses that dropped the Steelers under .500.But Pittsburgh snapped its skid Sunday with a 24-9 win at 0-11 Cleveland, enabling it to tie Baltimore for first place in the AFC North as the Ravens lost in Dallas. Its really big when you have a win like this, linebacker Ryan Shazier said. Wed been on a losing streak, so getting a win is really going to help everybody get into a better mood. We just need to get where we want to go and where we need to go.Aside from having about two days of prep time before flying to Indianapolis Wednesday, the Steelers appear to have most of the advantages in this one. Their key players are available and relatively healthy, unlike the Colts, who might also be without second-leading tackler Clayton Geathers (concussion).Pittsburghs point of emphasis for Thursday night might be finishing off drives. The Steelers constructed four drives of at least 11 plays at Cleveland, but settled for field goals on three of them as a spate of mistakes helped stall them out.We have to clean some things up from a detail standpoint when we get into the red zone, running back LeVeon Bell said. We got away with it (against Cleveland) but other games we may not. Well watch the film and see what we have to clean up. The details have to be better.Bell was at his best against the Browns, accounting for 201 total yards from scrimmage and scoring a touchdown on the last play of the first half with a 1-yard run.Indianapolis is playing just its third Thanksgiving game. Its 2-0 on this holiday, winning at Detroit in 2004 and Atlanta in 2007. ... The Atlantic Coast Conference is off to one of its strongest starts in league history.Often maligned as the weakest of the Power Five leagues, the ACC has three teams ranked in the top 10 , tied with the Big Ten for the most. Its 17-5 record in non-conference games is the third-best start in ACC history. The conference, and two of its biggest stars, will take center stage in college football on Saturday at noon when second-ranked Florida State (2-0) and No. 10 Louisville (2-0, 1-0 ACC) meet in Kentucky. Its the first meeting of two top 10 teams from the ACC since Florida State and Miami in 2013.I think its critical, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said of what the showdown means to the ACC. It adds to ... credibility. The game feature Florida State redshirt freshman quarterback Deondre Francois and Louisvilles dual-threat dynamo Lamar Jackson, who has put his name into early Heisman Trophy talk with 13 touchdowns in two record-setting games.Jackson was responsible for eight touchdowns by halftime in the Cardinals season-opening win against Charlotte, and followed that up by running for four scores and passing for another in a 62-28 victory at Syracuse . With 411 passing yards and 199 rushing yards against the Orange, he became just the second 400-150 player in FBS history.Francois, in his first start for the Seminoles, had 478 yards of offense in guiding Florida State to its largest come-from-behind victory in a 45-34 triumph against No. 19 Mississippi. In a league that has been recently viewed as Florida State, Clemson and everyone else, Fisher believes its time for people outside the ACC to take another look and realize other teams in the league can compete with everyone. The Seminoles beat Auburn for the 2013 national championship. Clemson made the title game last season, losing to Alabama, but Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson was a prominent name in early Heisman talk this year as well.It is great, great football in the ACC and Im glad that people are starting to see it, Fisher said. He said some of the perspective of ACC football is based on the leagues reputation that took hold long ago and is difficult to shake.I just think its something that over time has been ingrained and it will taake time to get it out, he said. Chris Hogan Jersey. Seminoles center Alec Eberle grew up in Mechanicsville, Virginia, at a time when Virginia Tech was the leagues marquee program. The Hokies won four championships in their first seven years in the league, from 2004-10, but numerous teams have shown improvement since.Over the last couple years, the ACC has come up so much in the football world, Eberle said. Florida State was up there and Virginia Tech, but now Louisville, UNC is getting real big, Duke has gotten better over the years. Its awesome knowing the ACC is competing at this higher level.Clemson (2011, 2015) and Florida State (2012-14) have combined to win the last five league championships, but in the past four seasons, Georgia Tech has reached the title game twice, Duke and North Carolina once each. Its definitely improving, definitely on the rise, Louisville wide receiver Jamari Staples said. Id say the ACC is one of the strongest. There are so many teams that can just pop out of nowhere. Wake Forest is 2-0. Who knows where theyll be at the end of the season? Its a hard conference to play in. Youve got to work hard to win.The 2-0 start for the Demon Deacons includes a 24-14 victory at Duke last weekend, their first road victory against any of the other three North Carolina schools in the conference since they won at Duke of October 2011.Third-year coach Dave Clawson cautioned against making too much of the victory, but is optimistic.I dont want to make it bigger than it was, he said. It was a big win for our program. ... But in terms of validating what we did, it is still a work in progress. It only means something if we can carry it through and keep improving and win more games.Sounds like a microcosm of the ACCs strong start.---AP sports writers Joe Reedy in Tallahassee, Florida, Gary Graves in Louisville, Kentucky, and Joedy McCreary in Winston-Salem contributed.---Online: The APs college football page: Hank on Twitter: and his work can be found at: Disocunt Football Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys China China NFL Jerseys White Cheap Authentic Jerseys Youth NFL Jerseys Wholesale Camo China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Discount Jerseys China NFL Hoodies Cheap NFL Jerseys Camo Cheap NFL Jerseys Outlet Nike NFL Jerseys China Cheap Stitched Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys 2019 Youth NFL Jerseys China ' ' '

This story appears in ESPN The Magazines July 18 Body Issue. Ryan Allen Jersey . Subscribe today!Advisory: This story contains explicit language.AFTER THE 2002 season, the Red Sox had a list of nine -- count em, nine -- candidates for time at first base and designated hitter. As former Red Sox beat writer Jeff Horrigan says, The expectations were really, really low. That was clear just by the number of people they threw at the position. But Bostons new GM, Theo Epstein, and president/CEO Larry Lucchino -- with an assist from one of the greatest pitchers in team history -- saw a glimmer of something in a washout from the Twins named David Ortiz. This is the story of the months between November 2002 and May 2003, when a player nobody wanted, just one of nine, became a legend a city couldnt do without.THEO EPSTEIN: Heres how I remember it: Going into the offseason, we knew we had a top-heavy offense and wanted to round out our roster with quality hitters to deepen the lineup. We also had to cut about $10 million from the payroll, so we were looking for inexpensive, underrated guys who had a chance to represent real value. We traded for Todd Walker early in the offseason [to play second] and had our eye on Bill Mueller to play third. We had first base and DH open, and we liked the idea of acquiring three good hitters for those two spots to let them battle it out for at-bats, deepen the lineup and improve the bench. We had a meeting shortly after I took over [on Nov. 25] and sorted the available value options into tiers -- the targets and the fallbacks. The potential trade targets were David Ortiz, Kevin Millar, Erubiel Durazo and Jeremy Giambi. The potential free agents were Brad Fullmer and Lee Stevens. Ortiz was a target and high up the list but was just a guy in the mix we liked ... not a guy we felt we absolutely had to have.EPSTEINS FALLBACK LIST included two Red Sox players who had been favored before his arrival: Cliff Floyd, a free agent who had been traded to the Red Sox in 2002 and who was owner John Henrys first choice for DH; and Shea Hillenbrand, who had been an All-Star at third in 2002 but whod walked just 25 times in 676 plate appearances, a death sentence in a new world of on-base percentage.CLIFF FLOYD, RED SOX OUTFIELDER/DH: I receive a call from John Henry, who tells me 2003 is going to be a big year, the Red Sox are ready to win and they need me. He says that I had a week to decide. A couple days later, I guess there were some reports that the Yankees were interested in me, and I get a call from John Henry, who now tells me I had three days. He was not going to get in a bidding war with the Yankees. I was like, Yeah, but I still need to know whats out there. I never heard from the Red Sox again. Offer off the table. Gone. I wound up signing with the Mets.EPSTEIN: My opinion from the beginning was that we should let Cliff sign elsewhere, take the draft picks and use the money to sign several hitters. We had to cut payroll, acquire several bats and strengthen the farm system, so it seemed like the best course.MIKE PORT, INTERIM GENERAL MANAGER: Once Theo was named, he and his team took off at the speed of light, selling guys on what the Boston Red Sox wanted to be all about. ... I just dont feel like Shea Hillenbrand fit into the plan or gravitated into the philosophies Theo wanted to see. Between Shea and that administration, there wasnt good chemistry.WITH FLOYDS OFFER off the table, Epstein began trying to trade Hillenbrand. He also started to consider his free agent options to fill spots at first base and DH. His first choice, Durazo, went to Billy Beanes As in a four-team deal at the winter meetings. Later that day, Epstein made a trade with the Phillies for his second choice: Jeremy Giambi, kid brother of 2000 AL MVP Jason Giambi. The next day, Minnesota nontendered Ortiz.DAVID ORTIZ: The Twins? They never said anything to me. When they released me, it was like, nothing. I heard it from my agent.BILLY BEANE, OAKLAND As GM: The Machiavellian answer would be to say, Yeah, we had an idea the whole time what Ortiz would be. We tried to get him. We went after him hard, but Boston beat us to him. That would be the right answer, right? But thats not true. He wasnt in our plans. He wasnt on our radar.Who did we get? Durazo? Oooh, yay! We got Durazo! Seriously, we knew of Ortiz, but we knew him as a player who may have had some potential but had some injuries, had some trouble getting on the field. I think we trusted the Twins organization. Terry Ryan and his group have always been known as a smart group. They didnt do reckless things. They didnt make big mistakes. If they were letting him go for free, I mean, just for nothing, by our way of thinking, there had to be a reason.KEVIN MILLAR, MARLINS OUTFIELDER: This was the start of Moneyball, and guys were being looked at differently. Different numbers now meant different things. Now they could tell you which f---ing guy hit what with two strikes on the road between the hours of 8 and 9:30. Jeremy Giambi was one of those guys, and he was Jason Giambis brother. The brother of the guy who won an MVP? Yeah, he definitely got a look.NEXT ON EPSTEINS list was Fullmer, a favorite of former GM Dan Duquettes. But he re-signed with the Angels after the winter meetings. Former Indian Stevens signed with the Devil Rays shortly after. By then, though, the Red Sox also had agreed to a deal with Julio Zuleta, a giant, 6-foot-6, 230-pound Panamanian who could hit a baseball into different time zones.ORTIZ: Another f---ing guy everybody thought was better than me.EPSTEIN: Zuleta, that name is a blast from the past! He was not really in the major league mix, just a flier as a minor league free agent who had serious pop.JEFF HORRIGAN, RED SOX BEAT WRITER (BOSTON HERALD): Julio Zuleta! I remember him: big, scary guy. Shaved head. He looked like the guy from Major League. I even remember his stance, kind of a crouch. Huge power.ORTIZ: So now you see all these guys signing, and Ive got nothing. I didnt think I wasnt going to play, but I was preparing to just go to winter ball and hope something came up. So I went to winter ball and had a good winter, but I didnt have anything.FERNANDO CUZA, AGENT TO DAVID ORTIZ: David was calling me five times a day. He was nervous as s---. Ill never forget being in that coffee shop with him at the Sheraton in Santo Domingo [capital of the Dominican Republic]. That face.Every day that went by, you could see it. He was saying, Im young. I have no other skills but to play baseball, but nobody wants me. What am I going to do? How am I going to provide for my family? I told him if you get the chance, youre gonna be a son of a bitch. Youre gonna tear it up. I didnt think his career was over, because he was a great hitter.DESPITE HIS AGENTS words, Ortiz was in a full panic by January. Spring training was six weeks away, and he had no job. There were no offers, no workouts, no invites. The Red Sox now had Jeremy Giambi, Zuleta and Hillenbrand on the roster. Then came an intervention from an unlikely source -- perhaps the greatest Sox pitcher of all time.LARRY LUCCHINO: The biggest priority [of the offseason] was signing Pedro Martinez to a significant extension. We had an open dialogue with Pedro. When David was let go by Minnesota, Pedro called and told us that David was a great guy and he was someone we needed to take a look at. Now, you have to remember, Pedro was our No. 1 offseason priority, and he was asking us the favor of giving David Ortiz a look. It was just an invite to spring training, but if that was going to help us with the negotiations with Pedro, well, we saw that as an easy thing to do. It was a propitious call at a propitious moment. I think the influence of Pedro Martinez in bringing David Ortiz to Boston is one of the most overlooked and under-discussed elements of the whole story.EPSTEIN: [After Ortiz was nontendered] I called Fern Cuza to express interest in David, and Fern and I stayed in touch the next month. We had Dave Jauss work out David at first base in the Dominican to see whether he was an option there or whether we should consider him a DH only. Meanwhile, David was getting antsy. He and Pedro Martinez were close, and Pedro called everyone -- me, Larry Lucchino, Jack McCormick [Red Sox traveling secretary] -- to lobby for David and talk about what a great guy he was.ORTIZ: All I know is that one day right in front of me, Pedro called Larry and told him to sign me. Pedro made it happen.CUZA, WHO WAS ALSO MARTINEZS AGENT: Larry and I were negotiating Pedros extension. Pedro personally called Larry. I remember Larry saying regarding David, We can do that. I dont know what happened behind closed doors, but Theo called me and we worked out a deal. You had the star player, the best player on a team approaching the last year of his contract, asking for a favor. Do the favor and what does that really cost you? There was zero economic risk to the Red Sox. If David doesnt make it, he gets released.ON JAN. 22, 2003, the Red Sox signed David Ortiz to a one-year, $1.25 million deal.ORTIZ: You know how many offers I got? One. From the Red Sox. Thats the truth.EPSTEIN: I was an Ortiz fan from my time with the Padres tracking the Twins farm system. Our numbers guys liked Davids performance, as he had just hit 20 homers in a partial season with the Twins. Our scouts considered him a good hitter who could get better if he could close up a couple holes in and up. We all thought he was a great fit for Fenway, as he demonstrated a real ability to hit the ball the other way. The doubts centered on his health, his defense and why the Twins were making him available.LUCCHINO: There was some disappointment about it, and as I remember, the pushback was coming from Theo. He believed our team was set. I remember him feeling that we already had our DH, and his name was Jeremy Giambi.NOW ORTIZ HAD a spot on the roster, but the Red Sox werent finished. Boston was engaged in side negotiations to acquire outfielder and first baseman Millar from the Marlins, even though Millar had agreed in principle to play in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons.MILLAR: I had spoken to the Chunichi club, and we started to negotiate. They told me they were going to pay me two years, $6 million. Six million? And Im like, Im rich, biiiiitch! Then the Marlins put me through waivers and the Red Sox claim me -- but -- Ive already agreed to play in Japan. So I call my agent. They told me no matter how it played out, I wasnt going to lose money, so hell yeah, I want to play with the Red Sox.But now we have this international incident. Bud Seligs getting involved. The Sox have some juice to make this happen, but now Im getting scared. Im not Barry Bonds. Im not Sammy Sosa. Im this common-ass white boy playing right field. Im hearing Larry Lucchino wants to pull out of the deal, you know, like they dont need the hassle. Im glad they didnt. The only thing left was for me to talk to the rep from Chunichi. He told me he would be dishonoring his country if he didnt bring me back with him. For real! [In the end, Chunichi released its claim and Millar was free to sign with the Red Sox.]BY SPRING TRAINING, the Red Sox had more assets than they could manage. We were four deep at first base taking ground balls, Millar says: Giambi, Hillenbrand, Ortiz and Millar. May the best man win. But by the start of the season, Millar had won the job at first, in part because he was more mobile than Ortiz, and Giambi was the full-time DH. Weeks earlier, Ortiz was worried that he would not have a

We have to play for 48 minutes but I thought we played a great basketball game coming back from a tough loss last night. Guys really competed. We moved the ball. Having Brad out there, we are a different team for the obvious reasons.Having an interior force like Whiteside gives the Heat a different component than most teams.Anytime I see a team that likes to score in the paint, my eyes light up, said Whiteside, who also had 12 points and 17 rebounds.Miamis bench helped fuel the win which came despite trailing 20-6. James Johnson and Tyler Johnson combined for 17 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists.Thats what were supposed to do, James Johnson told the Miami Herald. Thats what the reserves are for -- bring energy, sustain the lead or come back from any deficit. Ed Reed, one of the most prolific ball-hawking safeties the NFL has seen, is in his first year as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Buffalo Bills. . Over time, hes gained a reputation as being the team prankster, and Bills safety Aaron Williams decided to return the favor.Reed is considered by many to be the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T.) at the free safety position. So it was only right for Williams to invite two live goats -- the actual animals -- to Reeds office to pay a visit. The camera crew distracted Reed by pretending to do a ride-along with him on the way to work that morning. Heres a behind-the-scenes look at how it all went down.?While many would have panicked after noticing two goats hanging out in a dark office, Reed kept his cool -- but was noticeably caught off guard.?The Bills are 4-3 and have a huge game looming against the division-leading?New England Patriots?this week. The players can keep the pranks coming, as long as they continue to win football games.-- Josiah Turner . "I wrote 36 on my sheet at the beginning of the game," the Cincinnati coach said, referring the yard line the ball would need to be snapped from. . White came in fourth place in the event. Derek Jeters greatest quality mostly couldnt be seen, only heard. Malik Hooker Jersey . If you were around him enough, you listened to him say many times that youre either playing -- or youre hurt. His message: If you take the field with an injury, youre 100 percent.Jeter never made excuses, which, because he was the New York Yankees captain and one of the greatest players of all time, made it essentially impossible for anyone on the Yankees 25-man roster to offer alibis. His maniacal obsession with winning, combined with a mostly placid outward demeanor, helped create a calm during so many October playoff storms -- and even one quite memorable one in November -- that helped lead to five Yankees championships. He was a product of the dynastic Yankees -- and they were a product of him. Their success is all really chicken-and-egg stuff. Thats why grading Jeter as an individual player can be looked at through so many different lenses. His exceptionalism was wrapped around his teams success. While many times it ended in October glory, it began in the attitude he brought to spring training, arriving early, setting the attitude for his team. From a reporters perspective, he wasnt the most interesting person to talk to -- politely aloof is how Ive often described him to friends. He was very careful when sharing his thoughts, objecting to questions with any negative connotations. It was all about building a confident, positive attitude, which permeated his championship teams. Jeter, of course, needed talent around him, but his leadership was a vital ingredient. So how do you judge something you cant see? If, like Ernie Banks (No. 46 on our list), Jeter played for hapless Cubs teams that never sniffed a title, would he be remembered as a sort of Craig Biggio-type -- a Hall of Fame player based on his 3,000-plus hits, but not much more?If he were on the Baltimore Orioles teams of Cal Ripken Jr. (No. 47 on our list), would the fact that Jeter hit 23 or more homers just twice, while Ripken averaged 23 per 162 games during his career make it impossible to rank Jeter ahead of the Iron Man?There are arguments for why Jeter is just where he belongs -- at No. 51 -- and arguments for why he should be above Banks and Ripken instead. But what should not be held against him is all his magical moments, as if they happened by chance or luck in the context of his teams successes.Yes, he has had more postseason opportunities -- with the expanded playoffs coinciding with his career -- than anyone in baseball history, but he took full advantage of them. So he has The Flip, the Mr. November home run and the Jeffrey Maier game to help build his legend. And he didnt save his flair all for the postseason. He had the bloody catch against the Red Sox, when he ran full-steam into the stands. His 3,000th hit was a home run, on a 5-for-5 day. His final hit at Yankee Stadium was a walk-off single, a trademark one-hopper through the right side.He could be selfish, at times. He could have stood up for Alex Rodriguez at certain points in their tenure as Yankees teammates, but the captain of the franchise chose personal animosity over siding with a valuable and vulnerable teammate, whom the fans were pummeling.Despite his nearly flawless reputation, Jeter could be outlandish. After finishing an almost $200 million contract, he demanded the same rate, though the quality of his play at the end of his career had diminished to the point where there was no free-agent market for him. But, despite some hiccups, he was all about the team. He didnt care all that much about personal accomplishments; his stated goal was to match Yankees legend Yogi Berra for most World Series rings. Berra won 10; Jeter made it halfway there.Jeters attitude separated him from many of his peers, but he could also play. If you believe he never used performance-enhancing drugs, as most presume, you could make a real argument he deserved to be a lot higher up this list because we know many of his competitors -- yes, and teammates -- were juicing. That makes what Jeter did on the field that much more impressive.Jeter never won a regular-season MVP, a batting or home run title. He did collect 3,465 hits, sixth all time -- one tangible in which he beats both Banks and Ripken.I never covered Banks or Ripken, so I cant say first-hand what type of attitude they brought to the park. I witnessed Jeters often. If you were starting an all-time team, you could pick Banks or Ripken or A-Rod as your starting shortstop. Ultimately, I would probably take their superior tangibles over Jeters intangibles. However, you couldnt go wrong if you had the Yankees No. 2 as your No. 1, either. Darius Leonard Jersey . MINNEAPOLIS -- With a roster full of some of the best young talent in the league and a new, playoff-tested coach to lead them, the Minnesota Timberwolves entered this season as a trendy pick to finally end a 12-year postseason drought.Ten games into this still-young season, Tom Thibodeau finally erupted after watching his team give away yet another double-digit lead in a loss to the Charlotte Hornets that dropped them to 3-7.Its not that the Timberwolves are losing games this season that has angered him. Its how they are losing them, with the same mistakes occurring over and over again, particularly during the third quarter of nearly every game.A big part of learning is trial and error. So when you go through something and it doesnt work, you should learn from it, Thibodeau said after a 115-108 loss to the Hornets on Tuesday. The second time around, it shouldnt be the same way. That has to change and it has to change fast. The Timberwolves have been one of the best offensive teams in the league this season, with Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns and Zach LaVine all showing skills that have fans cautiously hopeful that the franchise is finally ready to return to relevancy. But they have been a disaster on defense and atrocious after halftime. They have been outscored by 91 points in their 10 third quarters this season, by far the worst margin in the league. Only one game this season have they outscored their opponent in that period -- a 36-point win over Memphis in which the Grizzlies were resting stars Mike Conley and Marc Gasol. The devastating ball movement that leads to wide open shots disappears, too. Thibodeau said his players start holding and dancing with the ball, which bogs down the flow. Contested jumpers lead to missed shots, which open up transition opportunities for their opponents. The defense at the rim and on the perimeter is nonexistent. Layups, dunks and 3-pointers rain down on their heaads as they scramble to get things under control. LeRaven Clark Jersey. Wash, rinse, repeat. Were playing really well and it just turns and ruins the whole game, LaVine said Wednesday. It ruins all our spirits. Going into the next game, you feel like youve got it figured out. Were up 15, 12 points and were going good and its a nosedive. The results are familiar to fans. Target Center announced just 10,349 fans for the game against the Hornets on Tuesday. Average attendance during the five homes games is just over 13,000 per game in a building that holds close to 20,000, certainly not what the organization expected in the highly anticipated run-up to the season. There are only so many promotions, so many giveaways, so many marketing tools the business side can use to sell tickets and spur interest. With a team that has been bad for this long, the fans are going to make them prove that things are different before they start investing. This is the best team Ive ever been around, said point guard Ricky Rubio, in his sixth season with the Wolves. I get mad thinking that were wasting time. Were not learning. Its time to change. The Wolves do have things to comfort them. They are the best team in the league in point differential in the first quarter, first in 3-point shooting percentage and fourth in offensive efficiency. Thibodeau is considered a defensive mastermind, so it could just be a matter of time before his new charges start to execute his system the way he wants to see it done. But if they do want to make the playoffs and end that interminable drought, they know they have to get going soon. There is no easy way out. Its work, Thibodeau said. Were more than capable of doing it. We just have to get it done.---This story has been corrected to show third quarter combined deficit is 91 points. CHAPECO, Brazil -- Thousands squeezed into Chapecos cathedral and even more packed a stadium to mourn the death of 71 people in a plane crash, 19 of them members of the Chapecoense club who had been on the brink of soccer greatness. To lose (almost) all of them in such a tragic way, totally destroyed our city and each one of us, Carla Vilembrini said late Tuesday, standing outside Santo Antonio Cathedral. She was dressed like so many others -- in the clubs green and white jerseys.Chapecoenses fantasy season ended on a muddy Colombian mountainside late Monday when a chartered aircraft crashed south of Medellin. Only six of the 77 passengers and crew survived, three of them players. The club was having the best season in its 43-year history, heading to the first of two matches in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, the continents No. 2 club tournament.Distraught residents of this southern Brazilian city of 200,000 people, an agribusiness center near the Argentina border, wandered the streets around the stadium -- known as Arena Conda -- in stunned silence. The city is very quiet, businessman Cecilio Hans said. People will only believe once the bodies start to arrive. On social media, haunting last photos showed the smiling players boarding the flight to Colombia for their match with Atletico Nacional. In one photo, the team celebrated a last-minute save by goalkeeper Danilo only a week ago against the Argentine club San Lorenzo. The save guaranteed Chapecoense a spot in the final -- and ultimately cost Danilo his life in the crash.I cant still believe it, Alan Heinz said inside the stadium, his body pressed against the fence that separates fans from the field. This time the field was filled by a religious service and prayers for the dead.I was preparing for the best day of my life, and now I dont know what my life will be after this, he said.As recently as 2009, the club known as Chape was playing in Brazils fourth division, but it won promotion to the top league in 2014 for the first time since the 1970s.Victories over San Lorenzo and Independente -- two of Argentinas fiercest squads -- as well as the Colombian club Junior took the team to the Copa Sudamericana finals, the equivalent of the UEFA Europa League tournament.Few of the players had an international profile, and none had any appearances with Brazils glitzy national team. Most had played all over Brazil and Latin America. Only a few had ever reached Europe, like Cleber Santana, who played for Atletico Madrid in 2007-10.Chape strikers Bruno Rangel and Kempes, both 34, were among the top scorers in the Brazilian league, with 10 and nine goals, respectively. The onlly players to survive were goalkeeper Jakson Follmann, defender Helio Zampier, commonly known as Neto, and defender-midfielder Alan Ruschel. The only thing I can ask is prayers for the companions who were on the flight, he said. Also among the dead were 20 sports journalists, including Mario Sergio Pontes de Paiva, a former player who worked as a commentator for Fox Sports. He played briefly for Brazils national team in the early 1980s and had a long career as a midfielder and coach with many Brazilian clubs. He last coached Brazilian club Internacional in 2009 and Ceara in 2010.This is a very, very sad day for football, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said in a statement. At this difficult time our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.Brazilian President Michel Temer declared three days of official mourning, while soccer great Pele called it a tragic loss. Brazilian champion Palmeiras asked the countrys football confederation for permission to wear Chapecoenses jersey in its last match of the season.Around the world, the sport paused to remember the victims.Barcelona and Real Madrid held a minute of silence before their practice sessions during the day, and Frances top two leagues observed be a minutes silence at Tuesday nights games.Medellin-based Atletico Nacional said it was asking the South American soccer confederation to give the Copa Sudamericana title to Chape as a tribute to the players who died. Some of Brazils top clubs said they wanted to lend players to Chape for the 2017 season. They also said the team should not be relegated to the second division as it recovers from the disaster. The dream is not over. We will fight back when its time, said Chapes acting club president, Gelson Della Costa. Now its time to take care of the families, he said.---Associated Press sports writer Mauricio Savarese reported this story in Chapeco, Brazil, and AP sports writer Stephen Wade reported from Rio de Janeiro. LOUIS -- Theres no telling how these wacky World Series games will end. . -- Matt Ryan needed one of the best games of his career to lead the Falcons and their depleted offence out of their three-game losing streak last week. Lets be clear up front: North Carolinas response to the NCAAs notice of allegations is a little arrogant, a little elitist and, well, a lot right. The school is essentially saying that, yes, the courses in the African-American Studies department were a sham. And yes, a disproportionate number of athletes took those sham courses. But, the school counters, the NCAA shouldnt be able to charge the school with lack of institutional control or failure to monitor for two reasons:Its not the NCAAs businessSitting next to the scores of mens and womens basketball players and football players were everyday students. To the casual reader it is downright laughable. What else does the NCAA have to do other than to maintain academic integrity among its athletes? And since when is the retort, well everyone else was doing it, too a good defense? As ridiculous as the argument sounds, theyve got a point. In what is arguably the biggest case, in both scope and the brand name of the school being investigated, to fall on its enforcement staffs desk in decades, the NCAA may very well have a difficult time landing its two most serious charges. For that, it has no one to blame but itself and a thick rulebook that intentionally glosses over academic integrity. The NCAA membership worked long and hard studying and trying to decide what should and shouldnt be a bylaw, what is and is not within the manual, athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. The quality of the class, we understand and have said for some time didnt meet our normal standards, but that doesnt mean its a violation of a bylaw. There are two issues at play here.First up: What exactly is the NCAAs job? From the organizations own mission statement:Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. The key words are to govern competition. Nowhere does it say that the NCAA has a say so in the governance of or determining the merits of an institutions academic courses. In fact, the same organization that somehow has deemed itself worthy to determine if thousands of high schools meet their standards for initial eligibility is purposefully standoffish when it comes to telling colleges and universities what is and is not up to snuff.Once an athlete is enrolled in school, the NCAA monitors whether he or she is making the proper progress toward graduation -- i.e., taking enough, and passing enough, courses; makingg sure that student athletes are graduating at a proper rate. If not, the NCAA penalizes schools. But it does not -- nor does it want -- to police whether the courses athletes are taking are worth a fig. Its the NCAAs version of a separation of church and state.Weve got sports; you get class. The organization, in fact, hasnt created a by-law regarding academic integrity since 1983.For many, many years we have had presidents on the council and faculty athletic representatives on the council and each and every time when theyve looked at what the role of the NCAA is relative to academics they stay out of it, Cunningham said. They dont want the NCAA in the classroom. ... We work with our accrediting agency for academic issues. The NCAA Is our athletic agency. They each have different jurisdictional responsibilities. The second problem for the NCAA? The number of regular Joes and Janes who took the same courses as the athletes did. The NCAA tried to point to the paper classes as an impermissible benefit, a gift given to athletes to help them along because of their stature as big men and women on campus. Critics naturally and logically argue that if the academic support staff steered athletes to these courses they were, in fact, receiving an extra benefit. But UNC is asking, if everyone on campus was given the same chance to take the courses, no matter how fraudulent they were, how can it be construed as a benefit given only to athletes? The simple answer: It cant. The NCAA knows it cant, which is why in April the organization announced new rules regarding academic misconduct. Schools now must adhere to strict academic integrity policies. A violation of those policies now will equate to an NCAA violation. Heres the kicker from the NCAAs own press release:Additionally the proposal recognizes schools cant predict every type of academic integrity issue that could occur. Therefore, some misconduct committed by staff members or boosters that doesnt violate a schools academic misconduct policies may still violate NCAA rules. In other words, well know it when we see it.Surely under those rules, North Carolina wouldnt have passed the smell test.In adjudicating UNCs case, the rules are too little too late, enacted after the NCAA began its investigation.Instead the school is allowed to make what, by all accounts, is a nervy, illogical and downright laughable defense. And it just might work.
